I've been meaning to try Brookside Sushi for quite a while. I was in the neighborhood and decided on take out. I called in the order and received it about 20 minutes later. The inside was cozy and cute. I'd like to try to dine in sometime. I was impressed with the flavors in the spicy yellowtail roll the tuna nigiri hit the spot. Just getting a taste is definitely going to bring me back. I can't wait to try more of their interesting rolls! read more

I love that happy hour is every evening from 4-6pm, the seafood is fresh, and the rolls are original and creative. It's a small restaurant and the service can be a bit rocky. Sal ( Salvador ) is the chef owner and has a menu featuring both Sashimi, Rolls, Entrees, Noodles, and Hot Pot. When we arrived, it was open seating for parties of 2 and 4. The tables are close though and there is a chef's counter and open kitchen. I think there was just one server and one food runner. We started by ordinary a couple things from the happy hour menu and and the regular menu. The chef sends out a welcoming crab salad ( amuse-bouche ) after you've had a chance to look over the menu. The Pork Gyoza arrives crispy and delicious. We followed that with Vivian Roll which was flavorful and a little spicy. We asked the server if it had shrimp ( it didn't ) and she didn't know. Instead of stepping away, she called out to the chef from our table to find out. When the salad course was served, only one fork was delivered and when the Udon Noodles arrived there was one spoon. I would have loved to have requested additional silverware, but the server was stretched trying to keep up with all the tables. When my friend's water was empty, I swapped it with mine, and I finally was able to request more drinks along with 2 more appetizers to enjoy as my entree. The soft shell crab arrived, the dynamite flambe style never did. We discussed dessert and I ordered the Flan Special and it arrived without ice cream along with a check with the missing appetizer on the check... The server offered to see about the appetizer, but I asked that it be removed. Sal crafted a wonderful menu and it's delicious. Next time I might do better bringing some extra utensils and asking for the check if it gets busy. read more

I really wanted to like this place, but I suspect the fish used for the nigiri and maki was not fresh. It had a dull color and an almost soapy taste. It also looked like the same knife was used on all the fish as I saw marks of cross-contamination. On the other hand, the miso soup was very tasty and had large tofu chunks in it. My wife liked her hot pot. The chicken teriyaki and mixed tempura were both decent. Unfortunately, the bad sushi killed most of my appetite. I hope others have better luck. read more

Service was lovely, but the food was just so-so. We were greeted with a sample of the spicy crab salad, I did not try, but my friends both really enjoyed it. Ordered the edamame, rainbow roll, and ikura nigiri. If you need gf soy sauce, just ask and they will bring you a small bowl of it. The sushi rolls were a little smaller than what I am used to, rice was a little harder as well. The ikura (fish roe) nigiri was brought out at the very end after the meal was finished. Unfortunately, I wasn't highly impressed with my meal. It seems like a consistent place for sushi, and would come back if I were in the area. Our server was super attentive and checked on us throughout. While he made it known that he hasn't tried all of the menu items, he still tried his best to make recommendations and was happy to bring more ginger, water, drinks. read more

TIP: Be sure to check out their daily specials on Instagram. We were able to find parking out front and were able to be seated easily, it's a small restaurant with seating at the bar as well as at small tables. The sushi was all delicious as was the soup and edamame. We had a few different rolls. Since we came early there weren't a ton of people so we got our food quickly. The service was friendly. we were hopeful given the 4.4 rating BUT we left unimpressed. The sushi was fine. just fine. The cocktail wasn't great but they did try to make it right. The calamari for $18 had about 10 pieces and was peppery and VERY chewy. The sushi was meh. I wanted to love it . I was astonished by the experience I had here. We showed up for our reservation at 6:30 and were promptly seated. Food and drink orders were "taken" around 15 in. Not bad so far. 15 minutes go by and one of the four of us gets their food. It's at least 30 minutes before the rest of us do. We places drink orders which we waited over 30 minutes for. We had to ask 3 times to finally get all of our drinks. About an hour in, I finally get my food. One of our party is still missing their food though. 15 minutes go by and she comes back. We tell her we are missing food. Turns out she never turned in the order, after over 75 minutes of us sitting without our food. Finally around 7:55 our food has all arrived. We spend the next 40 minutes waiting to get a check, apparently nobody in the restaurant knew how to split a check down the middle. Only once during our two hour stay were we told something vague about a "kitchen delay". In reality our orders were simply not put in on time. Nobody around the restaurant, not even the manager, cared to check in on us, which is odd because at least 10 other tables were served and left while we were stuck miserably waiting. I'm amazed that this happened. This is genuinely the worst service I have ever received in my life. This was a terrible first impression and I will be telling friends of my about the experience. I can only hope management cares enough to reach out and at least apologize. What a truly disappointing and frustrating experience. read more

So I just had to update tonight I had an order to go as I needed a great meal to keep me going for a long work night. I got the daikon roll for the first time because it doesn't have rice it was pleasantly surprised with the combo of different fish very tasty just smooth and silky like I like the fish too taste. Best sushi in KC and I highly recommend it! Salvy is a master sushi chef with lots of experience and creates amazing rolls.

Salvy continues to produce the best sushi in the area. The quality and freshness is the high watermark. It's not overly drowned in sauces. The pieces don't require you to unhinge your jaw either. You get the full flavor of all the ingredients in each bite or mouthful. It's a smaller, clean shop that's not teaming with staff and they get many phone orders for carry out. So you may wait a bit longer than you're used to. But, that being said, it's well worth the wait. Expect a smile, wave and thank you from Salvy on your way out. read more

I love sushi and I was so excited when I heard of the new sushi place coming to Brookside. Located in the old location of Brookside Poultry, Brookside sushi is serving up fresh and delicious sushi. One thing I loved about it was the menu isn't pages long where the rolls all end up looking the same. There are of course plenty of options but not an overwhelming amount. Also the beef udon was so flavorful and filling! I had plenty to take home for left overs. While there is no outdoor seating, when i went, the tables are a good distance from each other so I felt safe eating inside. I look forward to trying their food for take out as well! read more

I went there with my family on a random Saturday because my wife was craving sushi. We thought lets try somewhere new. That was a mistake. The sushi here is okay at best. My wife's shrimp killer roll had a spoiled seafood taste. Needless to say, we didn't finish that. I had the Red Dragon roll. It was just okay. I would not go back or recommend this place based on the experience my family had. However, The service was good. The food is lacking. read more

I've eaten a lot of sushi - like an embarrassingly large amount of sushi. This is hands down the best in KC. Eat here a few times a month and it's always great. The Vivian Roll and Brookside Roll are crowd pleasers, but you really can't go wrong. Also love their udon. Make sure to tip well these folks are hustling in the midst of the pandemic, and probably doing as many carryout orders as dine-in. read more

This review is premised on service. The food was painfully slow in coming out. Plus, it came out at a very uneven pace. Our server was more intent on carry-out orders than on our table. Oh, we got some free chopsticks for our trouble. They had a wine's name on them and I assume they were free to the restaurant. A server has to be extremely unconcerned when she walks by your table and chooses not to respond to waving hands. I then saw the table next to us attempt to flag down the waitress. She finally acknowledged them. Two of three diners at the table got their food and finished it while the third diner still didn't have her food. If you don't want dine-in customers, don't put out tables. Bad experience. read more

Dinner of Red Dragon and Pork Katsu-don (on recommendation) followed by mochi for desserts. Highly recommend. Great little sushi spot in Brookside! I have ordered takeout 3 times and have really enjoyed everything I've ordered. I'm intrigued to see how the location will transform when they're done sharing the space with Brookside Poultry. One improvement is that they could add appetizers and a few more rolls (menu isn't small nor big) with more variety, some rolls have similar ingredients. But I'm sure that will come with the transition to take out to when they can fully open! read more

We came in on a Sunday and they had quite a few to go orders so we didn't receive our food until 30-45 minutes after arriving. Which was definitely quite a long time in my opinion. The rainbow roll was mediocre to be honest. The waiter and waitress were both welcoming and accommodating. However, we didn't get our waters refilled and I feel that is a basic thing you should be aware of as a server. read more

Super cute and bright restaurant, it was perfect for a quick afternoon bite. I was greeted by super friendly staff and the service was excellent. I sat at the sushi bar and ended up speaking to the owner who was incredibly sweet and obviously very passionate about his restaurant. Finally got to dine in last night. We had the Yellowtail Cheek, Dynamite (baked scallop), spicy ling-en-pop (spicy tuna over crispy rice), Vivian roll, Brookside Dragon roll, yellowtail handroll and ikura nigiri. The fish is so fresh here. I especially loved the Vivian roll. I got the plum wine spritzer which was very subtle and refreshing, but I loved my partner's milk punch even more (even though we don't think any milk was actually in it). Service was fantastic.
