Flan ( ordered the special, but the server delivered the regular, without ice cream )

I love that happy hour is every evening from 4-6pm, the seafood is fresh, and the rolls are original and creative. It's a small restaurant and the service can be a bit rocky. Sal ( Salvador ) is the chef owner and has a menu featuring both Sashimi, Rolls, Entrees, Noodles, and Hot Pot. When we arrived, it was open seating for parties of 2 and 4. The tables are close though and there is a chef's counter and open kitchen. I think there was just one server and one food runner. We started by ordinary a couple things from the happy hour menu and and the regular menu. The chef sends out a welcoming crab salad ( amuse-bouche ) after you've had a chance to look over the menu. The Pork Gyoza arrives crispy and delicious. We followed that with Vivian Roll which was flavorful and a little spicy. We asked the server if it had shrimp ( it didn't ) and she didn't know. Instead of stepping away, she called out to the chef from our table to find out. When the salad course was served, only one fork was delivered and when the Udon Noodles arrived there was one spoon. I would have loved to have requested additional silverware, but the server was stretched trying to keep up with all the tables. When my friend's water was empty, I swapped it with mine, and I finally was able to request more drinks along with 2 more appetizers to enjoy as my entree. The soft shell crab arrived, the dynamite flambe style never did. We discussed dessert and I ordered the Flan Special and it arrived without ice cream along with a check with the missing appetizer on the check... The server offered to see about the appetizer, but I asked that it be removed. Sal crafted a wonderful menu and it's delicious. Next time I might do better bringing some extra utensils and asking for the check if it gets busy.

Service was lovely, but the food was just so-so. We were greeted with a sample of the spicy crab salad, I did not try, but my friends both really enjoyed it. Ordered the edamame, rainbow roll, and ikura nigiri. If you need gf soy sauce, just ask and they will bring you a small bowl of it. The sushi rolls were a little smaller than what I am used to, rice was a little harder as well. The ikura (fish roe) nigiri was brought out at the very end after the meal was finished. Unfortunately, I wasn't highly impressed with my meal. It seems like a consistent place for sushi, and would come back if I were in the area. Our server was super attentive and checked on us throughout. While he made it known that he hasn't tried all of the menu items, he still tried his best to make recommendations and was happy to bring more ginger, water, drinks.

TIP: Be sure to check out their daily specials on Instagram. We were able to find parking out front and were able to be seated easily, it's a small restaurant with seating at the bar as well as at small tables. The sushi was all delicious as was the soup and edamame. We had a few different rolls. Since we came early there weren't a ton of people so we got our food quickly. The service was friendly. I plan on coming back.

So I just had to update tonight I had an order to go as I needed a great meal to keep me going for a long work night. I got the daikon roll for the first time because it doesn't have rice it was pleasantly surprised with the combo of different fish very tasty just smooth and silky like I like the fish too taste. BUT I got fried gyozo as I often do anywhere Asian I order these were simply cooked to perfection tonight I mean perfection crispy crunchy not at all oily or greasy - yum!!!

Salvy continues to produce the best sushi in the area. The quality and freshness is the high watermark. It's not overly drowned in sauces. The pieces don't require you to unhinge your jaw either. You get the full flavor of all the ingredients in each bite or mouthful. It's a smaller, clean shop that's not teaming with staff and they get many phone orders for carry out. So you may wait a bit longer than you're used to. But, that being said, it's well worth the wait. Expect a smile, wave and thank you from Salvy on your way out.

I've been to many sushi restaurants in the KC area but this place has definitely left an imprint on me. I don't remember what the roll was called, but the components in the roll were exceptionally well-balanced. If you're looking for fresh and delicious sushi it's time you try this place.

I love sushi and I was so excited when I heard of the new sushi place coming to Brookside. Located in the old location of Brookside Poultry, Brookside sushi is serving up fresh and delicious sushi. One thing I loved about it was the menu isn't pages long where the rolls all end up looking the same. There are of course plenty of options but not an overwhelming amount. Also the beef udon was so flavorful and filling! I had plenty to take home for left overs. While there is no outdoor seating, when i went, the tables are a good distance from each other so I felt safe eating inside. I look forward to trying their food for take out as well!

I am still genuinely befuddled at this Friday night dinner experience…read more I came in for a celebratory Hurricane since I'd heard these were great (and we loved their cocktails the last time) and a bite. The place was pretty empty which was unusual; the last time we came in I think was in December and it was slammed! It turns out they aren't serving alcohol right now (apparently an ownership change? I didn't get the full scoop) so that was the first let-down. So fine - I'll just have a bowl of the gumbo. For $29?! And some biscuits. The gumbo comes out in a cracked bowl with a cracked plate underneath and the 3 little crawfish on top are refrigerator cold. Granted, the actual gumbo was pretty solid with the right amount of heft and spice and depth, but even then the rice had some hard pieces in it like it was old. The biscuits aren't anything to write home about and the butter is just meh. I wouldn't spend my carbs there. On top of all that, the waitress literally couldn't be bothered that I existed. I had to pry to get a drink menu (which is when I found out they weren't serving any), I couldn't get any eye contact from her or any kind of friendliness, she asked me if I wanted them to "heat it up" when I told her about the crawfish, and then brought my bill when I hadn't even finished dinner without bothering to ask if I wanted any dessert. And on top of that, there was no mention at all about the dinner issues or any apology whatsoever. I don't need or want a meal comped but for over $40 for a bowl of gumbo and some biscuits (+ tax, tip, etc) I at least expect some acknowledgement or "hey, here's something nice we can do for you". We really enjoyed the last time we were here and this was a genuinely jarring experience compared to that. The place looks pretty rough right now - maybe this is one of those places that has the right vibe in the dark, but nothing felt right about it today, and I'm afraid I can't (won't) recommend it again.

It was a lowkey vibe around 12:30 on a Monday and we chose to sit outside in the lovely weather. Our family of five decided on cheesy hush puppies, and the Whomp! Platter. The favorites were: the ribs, the Mac and cheese and the beans. The ham was also exceptional, not overly smoked or dry! We loved both sauce options as well. Our waitress was kind, and knowledgeable about the menu, personable and swift with refills, napkins and clearing out used dishes. This is without a doubt the best BBQ spot we've found so far. We cast our culinary lines into the waters of this Olathe staple tonight…read more It's been a decade or more since I last graced these shores, so I was eager to see if it still held onto that rustic charm. Stepping inside is like stepping straight into 1990--clean, nostalgic, and completely frozen in time. We kicked off with the traditional, complimentary family-style spread: ham and beans, hush puppies, and coleslaw. I'm not a big beans-and-slaw guy, but they nailed the traditional flavor profile for anyone who is. The hush puppies, however, were a total Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Dry--half of them were perfectly moist with a crisp shell, while the rest felt ready to turn to dust in the wind. I went non-traditional and reeled in the Hunter's Special: rotisserie duck (leg and thigh), fried quail, and a jumbo frog leg with mashed potatoes and gravy. The taters and gravy were easily the most comforting part of the meal. All the meats delivered good flavor, though It was like biting into you an oil slick. The fried quail was the standout catch of the day for me--I'm one of those people who eats the bones, so aside from the heavy grease, I was in crunch heaven. One highlight of the plate was trying the Gunslinger hot sauce, which delivered the fiery flame I was looking for. Service was the biggest snag of the night. My friend mentioned the staff is usually exceptionally friendly, but our server gave off pure robot energy--strictly matter-of-fact with zero charisma. The ultimate cringe moment was watching her grab our drink glasses from the top like an arcade claw machine, completely crushing my friend's straw in the process. The food made it to the table, but human warmth was entirely off the menu. Come for the rustic nostalgia, the crunchy quail, and the Gunslinger sauce--just hope for a server with a bit more soul.
