Tuna nigiri and spicy hamachi roll
    Lily L.

I've been meaning to try Brookside Sushi for quite a while. I was in the neighborhood and decided on take out. I called in the order and received it about 20 minutes later. The inside was cozy and cute. I'd like to try to dine in sometime. I was impressed with the flavors in the spicy yellowtail roll the tuna nigiri hit the spot. Just getting a taste is definitely going to bring me back. I can't wait to try more of their interesting rolls!

I love that happy hour is every evening from 4-6pm, the seafood is fresh, and the rolls are original and creative. It's a small restaurant and the service can be a bit rocky. Sal ( Salvador ) is the chef owner and has a menu featuring both Sashimi, Rolls, Entrees, Noodles, and Hot Pot. When we arrived, it was open seating for parties of 2 and 4. The tables are close though and there is a chef's counter and open kitchen. I think there was just one server and one food runner. We started by ordinary a couple things from the happy hour menu and and the regular menu. The chef sends out a welcoming crab salad ( amuse-bouche ) after you've had a chance to look over the menu. The Pork Gyoza arrives crispy and delicious. We followed that with Vivian Roll which was flavorful and a little spicy. We asked the server if it had shrimp ( it didn't ) and she didn't know. Instead of stepping away, she called out to the chef from our table to find out. When the salad course was served, only one fork was delivered and when the Udon Noodles arrived there was one spoon. I would have loved to have requested additional silverware, but the server was stretched trying to keep up with all the tables. When my friend's water was empty, I swapped it with mine, and I finally was able to request more drinks along with 2 more appetizers to enjoy as my entree. The soft shell crab arrived, the dynamite flambe style never did. We discussed dessert and I ordered the Flan Special and it arrived without ice cream along with a check with the missing appetizer on the check... The server offered to see about the appetizer, but I asked that it be removed. Sal crafted a wonderful menu and it's delicious. Next time I might do better bringing some extra utensils and asking for the check if it gets busy.

Service was lovely, but the food was just so-so. We were greeted with a sample of the spicy crab salad, I did not try, but my friends both really enjoyed it. Ordered the edamame, rainbow roll, and ikura nigiri. If you need gf soy sauce, just ask and they will bring you a small bowl of it. The sushi rolls were a little smaller than what I am used to, rice was a little harder as well. The ikura (fish roe) nigiri was brought out at the very end after the meal was finished. Unfortunately, I wasn't highly impressed with my meal. It seems like a consistent place for sushi, and would come back if I were in the area. Our server was super attentive and checked on us throughout. While he made it known that he hasn't tried all of the menu items, he still tried his best to make recommendations and was happy to bring more ginger, water, drinks.

TIP: Be sure to check out their daily specials on Instagram. We were able to find parking out front and were able to be seated easily, it's a small restaurant with seating at the bar as well as at small tables. The sushi was all delicious as was the soup and edamame. We had a few different rolls. Since we came early there weren't a ton of people so we got our food quickly. The service was friendly. I plan on coming back.

So I just had to update tonight I had an order to go as I needed a great meal to keep me going for a long work night. I got the daikon roll for the first time because it doesn't have rice it was pleasantly surprised with the combo of different fish very tasty just smooth and silky like I like the fish too taste. BUT I got fried gyozo as I often do anywhere Asian I order these were simply cooked to perfection tonight I mean perfection crispy crunchy not at all oily or greasy - yum!!!

Salvy continues to produce the best sushi in the area. The quality and freshness is the high watermark. It's not overly drowned in sauces. The pieces don't require you to unhinge your jaw either. You get the full flavor of all the ingredients in each bite or mouthful. It's a smaller, clean shop that's not teaming with staff and they get many phone orders for carry out. So you may wait a bit longer than you're used to. But, that being said, it's well worth the wait. Expect a smile, wave and thank you from Salvy on your way out.

I've been to many sushi restaurants in the KC area but this place has definitely left an imprint on me. I don't remember what the roll was called, but the components in the roll were exceptionally well-balanced. If you're looking for fresh and delicious sushi it's time you try this place.

I love sushi and I was so excited when I heard of the new sushi place coming to Brookside. Located in the old location of Brookside Poultry, Brookside sushi is serving up fresh and delicious sushi. One thing I loved about it was the menu isn't pages long where the rolls all end up looking the same. There are of course plenty of options but not an overwhelming amount. Also the beef udon was so flavorful and filling! I had plenty to take home for left overs. While there is no outdoor seating, when i went, the tables are a good distance from each other so I felt safe eating inside. I look forward to trying their food for take out as well!

Normally a second stop on such short timeline is a non-option, but that Steak Chimi had me asking questions... Is she really like that? Knocking my socks off with ease and leaving my cuticles filled with buttery remember-me's. I had to see her again. Had to! On the second time of asking, I wanted to see if she danced a different tune just as well. Putting on a Chicken Cobb for size proved ill-fitting, at least stood beside THAT sandwich. Nothing to make me crawl back with a humbling desperation. Inflation makes your lunch $10-15 already, so may as well make it twenty, order the right thing, and the Russell becomes worth frequenting. Just make sure she's wearing her shooting boots - we don't have room to thirst for Cobbs y'all.

You can tell a lot of thought went into creating the space. What really sets this place apart is the wood-fired cooking. Everything is prepared over Missouri hickory and oak, and you can truly taste the difference. The food has this incredible smoky depth that makes every bite feel elevated and intentional. I also love that they source ingredients from local farmers, which really comes through in how fresh and vibrant everything tastes. The menu feels seasonal, thoughtful, and well-executed. The food itself is not only beautifully presented, but packed with flavor. Every dish I tried was cooked perfectly and left a lasting impression. They're open for lunch, and they also offer catering from casual office lunches to full events. I've heard amazing things about their charcuterie boards as well. When we told her it was our first visit to the restaurant, she took the time to carefully go over the menus with us (regular, happy hour, and drinks), providing her recommendations when we asked. Her guidance was spot-on-target! For drinks, I had a Mindful Chai and my friend had the 3-Beverage Flight (Golden Hour, Heart Says Thanks, and Tres Raices). My chai was the BEST I have ever tasted (and I order chai every chance I get!), and my friend loved her 3 drinks (she said Tres Raices was her favorite). For our food, we split an order of the Not Queso Dip and the Avocado Tostadas. We were both very impressed by how fresh the ingredients were, and the blend of flavors in each dish that created a unique and yummy taste. The Kitchen has an open, airy layout that inspires deep breathing, while the arrangement and spacing of tables still provides for intimacy of conversation and minimal ambient noise. Sofhia checked back with us several times during our meal to ensure we had everything we needed and were thoroughly enjoying our food and drink (we were!). Okay Modern Market, I see you…read more I was on the hunt for a healthy-ish spot for lunch (I mean, hello it is January), when I came upon Modern Market Eatery on Yelp. Upon doing some research I learned it's a scratch kitchen specializing in clean eats, and that it's a chain. A win for the health options, a ding for the chain, but not all chains are bad, an we are living in a time where there are some winners. So, I packed myself up and headed down the road to Prairie Village. It's still fairly new, and it has that squeaky clean feeling to it when you arrive. Inside it's counter service and you seat yourself (they will bring the food to you). It kind of reminded me of how Noodles and Company felt when they first became a thing way back in the early 2000s. I ordered a thai salad that came in at under 400 calories so I was honestly skeptical at how big or flavorful it would really be when it arrived, and holy cow was it good. The chicken was cold, but still held some flavor, the dressing was great, there were fresh veggies, pickled onions. It was one of the best 400 calorie meals I've had in a long time. My dad ordered the salmon curry and he also enjoyed his though I didn't try it so jury's out on my opinion! I left full and happy to have discovered this spot. I'll be back soon!

You may wish to ask for her because she is just a fantastic person and competent and capable server. We started out with appetizers. My friends ordered the calamari. My wife loves that, but I don't so she was happy to have some. I ordered half a dozen blue point oysters on the half shelf. They were very good. I tried a piece of a calamari and to my surprise, enjoyed it. It was not overcooked or over breaded like most I have had in the Midwest. My wife got the Taos salad with chicken she enjoyed very much! I was fortunate enough to snag a bite or two from her and it was truly excellent. My buddy shared a bite of the Osso Bucco and it was superb!! I ordered the meatloaf with goat cheese mashed potatoes, and green beans. The meatloaf also had a nice pan gravy and French onions. Truly a delight. We got a nice bottle of sparkling rosé for the table, which was delicious. The only snag of the whole evening was waiting for them to chill the wine. I'm not sure why they would offer sparkling wines and not have them chilled prior. A minor and annoyance, but not enough to deduct a star from this fabulous establishment. The prices were fair, the atmosphere was outstanding, and we will be returning many times in the future! We will ask for Chloe.
