WOW! They were not kidding when people said that Kansas City has the best barbecue. The burnt ends were like melt in your mouth in the middle and then the perfect crisp on the outside. The ribs were so tender and yummy. The Mac and Cheese was sooooo creamy. The broccoli Cole slaw was the best I've had in my life. And finally.... The star of the show was the NAKED BBQ SAUCE. This sauce is out of this world. A combination of sweet and smoky. Best barbecue I've had in my life. The server was also so attentive and [[HIGHLIGHT]]the ambiance was so so cute, we sat outside and it was so nice outside.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

After spending some of our Sunday afternoon locating some of the sites in Anne Kniggendorf's 'Secret Kansas City' book, we decided we wanted some BBQ and settled on Chat Bar. We haven't been in a while since we don't get out to the Westport area very often, but we've always enjoyed Char Bar and it didn't disappoint today. Ashley G provided just the right level of service. We were taking our time and she knew how to time her appearance. We shared 'The Holy Trinity' meat platter and chose Beans and upgraded to Sweet Potato Fries as our sides. We paired our meal with a Dunkel. We had hoped by sharing that we would leave room for the Warm Peach Bead Pudding, but we were too full. So... we need to get back soon to try it. We are also looking for Char Bar to open in Olathe as we can get there more easily.

Our #1 fave BBQ in KC!! [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's a perfect location in Westport with plenty of indoor & outdoor seating that has active games like corn hole & throwing football.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I think they have the best burnt ends in the world. They're very flavorful full of meat and not too much fat. I decided to branch out & try a different side which was spicy coleslaw. It was not very spicy & was coated w vinaigrette not creamy. My dairy intolerance luved it!! Service is always quick & attentative.

An amazing BBQ spot with excellent food, plenty of options, and reasonable prices! We were recommended this spot by a friend who had been before and had recommended the CBGB burger. While we decided on other options the BBQ did not disappoint. The burnt ends melt in your mouth literally and were so tasty. The fried pickle was surprisingly delicious. The ribs were also good. You really can't go wrong here. The onion rings were also fried perfectly. Service was excellent. Our server was extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and always ready to give us a refill without suffocating us. The ambiance is casual. Great for family seating or a day out with the guys or gals. We highly recommend this place if you're in KC and with other bars just around the corner you can make a full night of it!

What a huge and lively venue! We went on a Thursday evening for Birthday and they were packed with Husker fans. Only downside to that was, they had literally eaten all the brisket and pork! We will have to return to try what we wanted. The burnt ends plate was very good with the smashed potato (wow!) and potato salad. The turkey sandwich was also enjoyed, with the bacon broccoli coleslaw being a highlight. Great service but a little pricey!

My favorite BBQ place in KC. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The vibe is immaculate, as you feel as if you are inside a BBQ.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]It was way too cold to go outside, but the fires and igloos looked cool.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]It also looks like a nice patio in the summer.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I appreciate the free parking garage behind the restaurant too. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich with fries. I appreciated the pork being seasoned prior to the sauce. Both house sauces are excellent too

I tried multiple barbecue places while in Kansas City, and this place was my second favorite, the competition is fierce in Kansas City though So being second place is not a bad thing! The meats all had a perfect amount of smoke flavor, and they were tender but not mushy. The side dishes were delicious as well! Not to mention the fact that the bar has a great selection of beer to choose from. I really liked the outdoor area even though we did not sit there. Would definitely return here if I come back to Kansas City!

Wow! Great BBQ and wonderful service made this a great Father's Day Celebration. I loved my Burnt Ends Eggs Benedict and we all shared a half chicken and the Peach Bread Pudding in addition to each of our entrees.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Great outdoor space![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Promptly seated and in a flash had drinks ordered. Server was very helpful with suggestions. Wings and ribs in play with beans and spicy red slaw. Everything was good tasting and good sized. Never needed sauce .

Came down for a work lunch. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant wasn't very busy for the lunch hour, but that could be due to all the construction/road closures at the moment.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I tried the whole hog tray. The ribs were tender and fell off the bone. The pulled pork was smoky and delicious. The sausage was good but the least favorite of the three. The coleslaw was creamy and still had some bite to it and wasn't overly tangy. The beans I like, but I prefer my baked beans to be on the sweeter side and these were more smoky and savory. I would definitely come back and eat this again.

My wife and I stopped by here today. It's been on our list for a long time. Our niece and nephew love it. I had read a lot of reviews about the chili and how many folks thought it was the best in town. It was pretty salty and lukewarm. The flavor was okay. It got better with a tablespoon of Tabasco. We also ordered the Pick 3 to share. We both enjoyed the brisket and pulled pork. The brisket is thick cut and lovely. Good smoke. A little dry. The pulled pork was perfect. No notes. The sausage was a little too moist, bland and fatty for me, but my wife loved it. She loved the beans, I thought they were just okay. We both loved the creamy Cole slaw. Everything except the cole slaw should have been warmer. Loved both the sauces at Char Bar.

    Cheese Hushpuppies

My husband and I tried Char Bar for the first time tonight. The food was really good. My husband got the 2 meat platter. He chose ribs and burnt ends as his meats. He chose the fries and baked beans as his side. The meat was REALLY good and the fries were very well seasoned. The beans were unique (not in a bad way, but definitely not comparable to anything I've had before). I got the Brisket Cheesesteak. It was really good. For starters, we got the cheesy hushpuppies and for dessert, we got the peach bread pudding. Both of which were amazing. Our server was very kind and helped run us through the menu. We will definitely be back.

Do they have a good happy hour?

I believe they do have a good happy hour.

Is this a family-friendly place to hang out? We're in town w/3 daughters for Chiefs game Jan. 1. Need a fun place to hang out on New Year's Eve. Want a place the 3 of us who are 21+ can have drinks but that allows our 19 & 13 year old. Is this a fit?

When I was there, there were lots of families of all ages. I bet you'll all really enjoy yourselves at Char Bar. Have a great time in KC! :)

Do they have gluten free bbq sauce? Good gluten free options in general?

Our sauces are all-natural, gluten free, vegan and delicious. Our gluten-free menu is pretty…

How kid friendly is the patio area and is there any kid menu options?

We are a family friendly restaurant. However, we do ask that children be monitored at all times as we do not have a child-specific play area. There is a kids menu, just ask for them at the host stand! I hope this helps!

    Is the patio pet friendly?

They have an outdoor area with games and things and yes pets are allowed there! Just has to be on a leash

Do they have bottomless mimosa brunch?? I just got here and they do not have bottemless mimosa brunch

    Yes!

Do you use any peanut oil in the restaurant?

We do have peanut oil in the building. However, it is not in use.

When we arrived, it was a little quiet, so we sat at the bar. The two bartenders working were welcoming. One of them asked if we were there to eat, handed us menus, and then let us know what wasn't in stock. It was a little weird that they were out of chicken quarters, pasta salad (or was it potato?), burgers (maybe that's a testament to their popularity), and bacon... Thankfully, the mac & cheese was available, so the mission wasn't a fail. The plus was that it came with a side of fries, and not just any-- they were seasoned sidewinder fries, for those of you who are fans of thicker potatoes. I had the Italian po-boy, which I really enjoyed. I thought they constructed it well, and the spicy relish wasn't too much heat if you're worried about that. It was definitely the right amount of food, too. I was able to clean the plate and not regret the last bite. At this point, they've been open for 8 months, so I think they've worked out the kinks, but we also showed up on a Wednesday night, so service was great and attentive. It might be different on weekends, but I'd come back to try more things on the food menu.

Felt like I was in a nice hotel restaurant. High ceilings, excellent lighting, Austrian decor strewn about, white tablecloth, all good. Service was pretty casual, though, which is just what I like. Real people having real conversations with you. The food was excellent. I had a special that I can't remember exactly what it was. It was a pork shank served osso bucco, on top of an excellent mashed potato. A wonderful tomato-based sauce was served on top, and this fall-off-the-bone shank was delicious and indulgent and just what I needed on this cold winter night. I also got to try a schnitzel with sides of spaetzle and warm red cabbage. Textbook. Crispy, juicy, delicious schnitzel. Creamy, herby spaetzel. And a pop of acid from the cabbage. This is one of the best meals on planet Earth, and this place did it right. No notes. For dessert, we chose a scrumptious little tartlet from their glass cabinet at the front of the restaurant. It was some sort of berry, and it came with a perfect little quenelle of cream on the side and a mint leaf. Great crust, great filling, just a great little way to end this meal. Overall, if you are interested in the menu at all, you will love it here. And if you're not interested in the menu, you gotta get out of the house more and come here anyway. What a perfect way to end my trip to Kansas City. I hope I get to come back one day.

So we loaded up and showed up one day around Noon. Ambiance was really cool. It's in the middle of some sort of progressive looking shanty-esque suburb. The kind of place that does drag queen bingo. I was right at home. Inside was college sport bar, but with a nice, huge board on the wall of all their beer selection. It Was quite expansive. Service was top notch, too. Nice server took care of us, made sure our glasses were never empty. The food came out at a good clips, and we got an unexpected bonus of free little beignet-like donuts with some delicious dipping sauces. As for food, we started off with a jumbo order of the Truffle Parmesan Hand-Cut Fries for the table. We got to choose two from their extensive list of aioli dipping sauces. Fries were good. Dusted with the perfect amounts of truffle and parmesan. And the sauces were my oh my. I recommend paying the upcharge to just try them all. I mentioned the time earlier, because we had no idea we were stumbling upon their brunch menu. Even more options to choose from! I got the Crispy Waffle Smash Burger (smashed hertzog beef patties, fried egg, smoked bacon, merkt's cheddar, caramelized onion, maple aioli, crispy buttermilk waffle). This thing was really nice. Perfect waffle, not too small, not too big, and no oily or anything obtrusive. A nice bun option. Eggs and bacon sometime get lost against giant burger patties, but with these smash patties, the extra accoutrements really stand out and make this burger really stand out in my mind. I also for the try the Smokestack Burger (smoked burnt ends, smoked gouda, whiskey bbq glaze, pickle relish, chipotle aioli & crispy jalapeño straws). Uhhh, as you can read, this thing was loaded with goodness. Fatty burger, smokey burnt ends, sweet boozy glaze, acidic pickles, and texture from that jalapeno. This was the perfect burger. I insist you order this. Overall, my research did not reveal Beer Kitchen to me, locals recommendation did. Shows that you gotta use your street smarts instead of your book smarts sometimes. The only downside was that they quit serving beer at halftime of the game we were watching. The game that went into extra time and on to penalty kicks. I am still genuinely befuddled at this Friday night dinner experience…read more I came in for a celebratory Hurricane since I'd heard these were great (and we loved their cocktails the last time) and a bite. The place was pretty empty which was unusual; the last time we came in I think was in December and it was slammed! It turns out they aren't serving alcohol right now (apparently an ownership change? I didn't get the full scoop) so that was the first let-down. So fine - I'll just have a bowl of the gumbo. For $29?! And some biscuits. The gumbo comes out in a cracked bowl with a cracked plate underneath and the 3 little crawfish on top are refrigerator cold. Granted, the actual gumbo was pretty solid with the right amount of heft and spice and depth, but even then the rice had some hard pieces in it like it was old. The biscuits aren't anything to write home about and the butter is just meh. I wouldn't spend my carbs there. On top of all that, the waitress literally couldn't be bothered that I existed. I had to pry to get a drink menu (which is when I found out they weren't serving any), I couldn't get any eye contact from her or any kind of friendliness, she asked me if I wanted them to "heat it up" when I told her about the crawfish, and then brought my bill when I hadn't even finished dinner without bothering to ask if I wanted any dessert. And on top of that, there was no mention at all about the dinner issues or any apology whatsoever. I don't need or want a meal comped but for over $40 for a bowl of gumbo and some biscuits (+ tax, tip, etc) I at least expect some acknowledgement or "hey, here's something nice we can do for you". We really enjoyed the last time we were here and this was a genuinely jarring experience compared to that. The place looks pretty rough right now - maybe this is one of those places that has the right vibe in the dark, but nothing felt right about it today, and I'm afraid I can't (won't) recommend it again.
