We're still pretty new to KC, and as such we are trying to find all the best kept bbq secrets and this feels like that kind of place! It was a lowkey vibe around 12:30 on a Monday and we chose to sit outside in the lovely weather. Our family of five decided on cheesy hush puppies, and the Whomp! Platter. Everyone at the table agreed they could eat five hush puppies by themselves! Everything came out hot, and in portion sizes fit for many more than the 3-4 the menu says it should feed. The favorites were: the ribs, the Mac and cheese and the beans. The ham was also exceptional, not overly smoked or dry! We loved both sauce options as well. Our waitress was kind, and knowledgeable about the menu, personable and swift with refills, napkins and clearing out used dishes. This is without a doubt the best BBQ spot we've found so far. The afternoon couldn't have been more perfect. Had no idea that Char Bar had this outdoor space that could be reserved if needed for a company event, celebration etc !! WOW! They were not kidding when people said that Kansas City has the best barbecue. The burnt ends were like melt in your mouth in the middle and then the perfect crisp on the outside. The ribs were so tender and yummy. The Mac and Cheese was sooooo creamy. The broccoli Cole slaw was the best I've had in my life. And finally.... The star of the show was the NAKED BBQ SAUCE. After spending some of our Sunday afternoon locating some of the sites in Anne Kniggendorf's 'Secret Kansas City' book, we decided we wanted some BBQ and settled on Chat Bar. We haven't been in a while since we don't get out to the Westport area very often, but we've always enjoyed Char Bar and it didn't disappoint today. Ashley G provided just the right level of service. We were taking our time and she knew how to time her appearance. We shared 'The Holy Trinity' meat platter and chose Beans and upgraded to Sweet Potato Fries as our sides. We paired our meal with a Dunkel. We had hoped by sharing that we would leave room for the Warm Peach Bead Pudding, but we were too full. So... we need to get back soon to try it. Our #1 fave BBQ in KC!! It's a perfect location in Westport with plenty of indoor & outdoor seating that has active games like corn hole & throwing football. The food was tasty and the service was excellent. The only thing I will say is that it is a noisy place. Too many hard surfaces amplify everyone's boisterous good time (but it's good they're all having such a good time). An amazing BBQ spot with excellent food, plenty of options, and reasonable prices! We were recommended this spot by a friend who had been before and had recommended the CBGB burger. While we decided on other options the BBQ did not disappoint. The burnt ends melt in your mouth literally and were so tasty. The fried pickle was surprisingly delicious. The ribs were also good. You really can't go wrong here. The onion rings were also fried perfectly. Service was excellent. Our server was extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and always ready to give us a refill without suffocating us. The ambiance is casual. Great for family seating or a day out with the guys or gals. What a huge and lively venue! We went on a Thursday evening for Birthday and they were packed with Husker fans. Only downside to that was, they had literally eaten all the brisket and pork! We will have to return to try what we wanted. The burnt ends plate was very good with the smashed potato (wow!) and potato salad. Decided to spend Valentine's Day at Char Bar for a late lunch. We've done brunch before and spent time in the patio for apps and sandwiches but decided to do a platter today! Of course we started with the cheesy hush puppies which are a must! Also liked the cornbread muffins but would've loved a little more salt in the batter, but the chive butter made up for it! My husband and I got the Holy Trinity platters either different sides and wow, the ribs and burnt ends might be our favorite in ALL of KC! Both very tender and juicy! Also loved the cheesy jalapeño corn and the servings were so generous that we'll have several meals on leftovers. Our server was excellent, friendly and very attentive. My favorite BBQ place in KC. The vibe is immaculate, as you feel as if you are inside a BBQ. It was way too cold to go outside, but the fires and igloos looked cool. It also looks like a nice patio in the summer. I appreciate the free parking garage behind the restaurant too. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich with fries. I tried multiple barbecue places while in Kansas City, and this place was my second favorite, the competition is fierce in Kansas City though So being second place is not a bad thing! The coleslaw was creamy and still had some bite to it and wasn't overly tangy. The beans I like, but I prefer my baked beans to be on the sweeter side and these were more smoky and savory. I had read a lot of reviews about the chili and how many folks thought it was the best in town. It was pretty salty and lukewarm. The flavor was okay. It got better with a tablespoon of Tabasco. We also ordered the Pick 3 to share. We both enjoyed the brisket and pulled pork. The brisket is thick cut and lovely. Good smoke. A little dry. The pulled pork was perfect. No notes. The sausage was a little too moist, bland and fatty for me, but my wife loved it. She loved the beans, I thought they were just okay. We both loved the creamy Cole slaw. My band, RELAAY, was recently on tour and had a stop in Kansas City. A friend recommended Char Bar. We sat outside and loved the vibe of the lights and fire pit. The Whomp! Platter says it serves two to three people, so we ordered it, an additional side, and a small salad for the four of us to share. We were able to eat the leftovers for two days! There was so much food, and it was so good! If you are with a group, I highly recommend splitting this platter. It's a ton of food for a great price. read more

Absolutely blown away by the service at my last visit to Char Bar! We stopped in on a rainy Tuesday as a large group without a reservation. To our surprise, there were already multiple large groups and entire sections of the restaurant were booked. The manager came over to talk to us and was able to find a space on the covered patio. Our server Sawyer was incredible. She took care of everything so quickly with multiple people ordering food and drinks on different tickets. Everything came quick and delicious, especially the cheesy hushpuppies and fried pickles. Crunchy, potato flavor throughout each bite and yet you can also taste the seasoning and the texture really brought it home. 10/10 by a longshot. The burnt ends were my favorite here, even better than Joe's, which is the place everyone in town raves about. 10/10 The fries were overly salty and sort of soggy not our favorite but not bad enough to dock a point. 4/10 The Mac and cheese was pretty good too. I would say like a 7/10. The chicken nuggets and the assortment of sauces... oh my god! My husband and I tried Char Bar for the first time tonight. The food was really good. My husband got the 2 meat platter. He chose ribs and burnt ends as his meats. He chose the fries and baked beans as his side. The meat was REALLY good and the fries were very well seasoned. The beans were unique (not in a bad way, but definitely not comparable to anything I've had before). I got the Brisket Cheesesteak. It was really good. We ordered Door Dash, because honestly we're both exhausted from moving our daughter to a new apartment. Dh ordered the brisket cheesesteak, and I had the CBGB burger. We also had a side of sweet potato fries. I admit that take out/carryout is never the same experience as dine in, however based on this singular experience, I'd never order again. The cheesesteak required au jus, as it was simply too dry. The same can be said for the CBGB burger. I understand that it was house ground smoked brisket, but we both added ketchup (a crime on brisket) and dunked in au jus just to be able to swallow it. We were just really disappointed. I'm not a big review person, but there is information that needs to be shared. So we went here based off of a google search for gluten free options for my wife. Charbar popped up as a gluten free option, so naturally we had to check it out. Never mind the fact it took an hour to get cold food, which for people that don't know almost all barbecue places have the food already cooked it just needs to be reheated. However my biggest issue is the food they brought out that is supposed to be gluten free, was clearly not. I get it, no one cares because it doesn't affect them; however, to someone with celiacs disease it is a big deal. The example that we'll use is the jalapeño cheesy corn bake. It came with bread crumbs on top.....what do you think bread crumbs are made of??? And it's something that's listed in their gluten free options.... On a positive note they do offer 2 gluten free beer options. I appreciate the waiter not charging us for the things that were supposed to be gluten free but it doesn't fix the problem. If you are going to advertise gluten free then follow through with it. read more

We had such a great experience at Char Bar! I ordered the Whole Hog and the ribs were absolutely stellar - I'm talkin' fall-off-the-bone tender. Everything we tried was incredible and clearly made with care. As non-drinkers, my husband and I really appreciated the mocktail and NA options. We also thought it was nice that they had so many gluten-free options available for those with dietary needs. It's the little things like that that make a place stand out! The outdoor space was perfect for our daughter, with games like bags, washers, giant Jenga, Tetris, and more. It created such a great environment for our family fun night. Good food and service in a really cool part of town. We had a variety of things between us and it was all good. I thought the sausage was the best of what we tried. It would have been five stars except that it was pretty pricey. We spent around $100 bucks despite drinking water and 2 of our party of 4 splitting a platter. Stopped by Char Bar after walking over from the AC Hotel in Westport with my pug, Mojo. They had outdoor seating with a great vibe--loved the little string lights outside. I definitely want to come back at night to enjoy it even more. I had the CBGB Burger and a Mango Cart pint. She had the Campfire Salmon and a peach lemonade. We also split a Caramelized Banana Parfait and liked it enough to grab another one to go. They brought Mojo a bowl of ice water right away, which I appreciated.
