WOW! They were not kidding when people said that Kansas City has the best barbecue. The burnt ends were like melt in your mouth in the middle and then the perfect crisp on the outside. The ribs were so tender and yummy. The Mac and Cheese was sooooo creamy. The broccoli Cole slaw was the best I've had in my life. And finally.... The star of the show was the NAKED BBQ SAUCE. This sauce is out of this world. A combination of sweet and smoky. Best barbecue I've had in my life. The server was also so attentive and the ambiance was so so cute, we sat outside and it was so nice outside.

After spending some of our Sunday afternoon locating some of the sites in Anne Kniggendorf's 'Secret Kansas City' book, we decided we wanted some BBQ and settled on Chat Bar. We haven't been in a while since we don't get out to the Westport area very often, but we've always enjoyed Char Bar and it didn't disappoint today. Ashley G provided just the right level of service. We were taking our time and she knew how to time her appearance. We shared 'The Holy Trinity' meat platter and chose Beans and upgraded to Sweet Potato Fries as our sides. We paired our meal with a Dunkel. We had hoped by sharing that we would leave room for the Warm Peach Bead Pudding, but we were too full. So... we need to get back soon to try it. We are also looking for Char Bar to open in Olathe as we can get there more easily.

Our #1 fave BBQ in KC!! It's a perfect location in Westport with plenty of indoor & outdoor seating that has active games like corn hole & throwing football. I think they have the best burnt ends in the world. They're very flavorful full of meat and not too much fat. I decided to branch out & try a different side which was spicy coleslaw. It was not very spicy & was coated w vinaigrette not creamy. My dairy intolerance luved it!! Service is always quick & attentative.

An amazing BBQ spot with excellent food, plenty of options, and reasonable prices! We were recommended this spot by a friend who had been before and had recommended the CBGB burger. While we decided on other options the BBQ did not disappoint. The burnt ends melt in your mouth literally and were so tasty. The fried pickle was surprisingly delicious. The ribs were also good. You really can't go wrong here. The onion rings were also fried perfectly. Service was excellent. Our server was extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and always ready to give us a refill without suffocating us. The ambiance is casual. Great for family seating or a day out with the guys or gals. We highly recommend this place if you're in KC and with other bars just around the corner you can make a full night of it!

What a huge and lively venue! We went on a Thursday evening for Birthday and they were packed with Husker fans. Only downside to that was, they had literally eaten all the brisket and pork! We will have to return to try what we wanted. The burnt ends plate was very good with the smashed potato (wow!) and potato salad. The turkey sandwich was also enjoyed, with the bacon broccoli coleslaw being a highlight. Great service but a little pricey!

Great atmosphere and service! Very dog friendly too! Our server Mike was exceptional. Must try the burnt ends and Mac and cheese. But honestly we tried most of the meats and they were all excellent. Great beer selection too. Highly recommend.

My favorite BBQ place in KC. The vibe is immaculate, as you feel as if you are inside a BBQ. It was way too cold to go outside, but the fires and igloos looked cool. It also looks like a nice patio in the summer. I appreciate the free parking garage behind the restaurant too. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich with fries. I appreciated the pork being seasoned prior to the sauce. Both house sauces are excellent too

I tried multiple barbecue places while in Kansas City, and this place was my second favorite, the competition is fierce in Kansas City though So being second place is not a bad thing! The meats all had a perfect amount of smoke flavor, and they were tender but not mushy. The side dishes were delicious as well! Not to mention the fact that the bar has a great selection of beer to choose from. I really liked the outdoor area even though we did not sit there. Would definitely return here if I come back to Kansas City!

Amazing BBQ with a great outdoor patio area. Live music, draft beer, yummy food. This is cool hangout spot for big gatherings or even date nights. Friendly staff and good service. Some of the best BBQ in Kansas City.

Great outdoor space! Promptly seated and in a flash had drinks ordered. Server was very helpful with suggestions. Wings and ribs in play with beans and spicy red slaw. Everything was good tasting and good sized. Never needed sauce .

Came down for a work lunch. The restaurant wasn't very busy for the lunch hour, but that could be due to all the construction/road closures at the moment. I tried the whole hog tray. The ribs were tender and fell off the bone. The pulled pork was smoky and delicious. The sausage was good but the least favorite of the three. The coleslaw was creamy and still had some bite to it and wasn't overly tangy. The beans I like, but I prefer my baked beans to be on the sweeter side and these were more smoky and savory. I would definitely come back and eat this again.

My wife and I stopped by here today. It's been on our list for a long time. Our niece and nephew love it. I had read a lot of reviews about the chili and how many folks thought it was the best in town. It was pretty salty and lukewarm. The flavor was okay. It got better with a tablespoon of Tabasco. We also ordered the Pick 3 to share. We both enjoyed the brisket and pulled pork. The brisket is thick cut and lovely. Good smoke. A little dry. The pulled pork was perfect. No notes. The sausage was a little too moist, bland and fatty for me, but my wife loved it. She loved the beans, I thought they were just okay. We both loved the creamy Cole slaw. Everything except the cole slaw should have been warmer. Loved both the sauces at Char Bar.

My band, RELAAY, was recently on tour and had a stop in Kansas City. A friend recommended Char Bar. We sat outside and loved the vibe of the lights and fire pit. The Whomp! Platter says it serves two to three people, so we ordered it, an additional side, and a small salad for the four of us to share. We were able to eat the leftovers for two days! There was so much food, and it was so good! If you are with a group, I highly recommend splitting this platter. It's a ton of food for a great price.

Do they have a good happy hour?

I believe they do have a good happy hour.

Is this a family-friendly place to hang out? We're in town w/3 daughters for Chiefs game Jan. 1. Need a fun place to hang out on New Year's Eve. Want a place the 3 of us who are 21+ can have drinks but that allows our 19 & 13 year old. Is this a fit?

When I was there, there were lots of families of all ages. I bet you'll all really enjoy yourselves at Char Bar. Have a great time in KC! :)

Do they have gluten free bbq sauce? Good gluten free options in general?

Our sauces are all-natural, gluten free, vegan and delicious. Our gluten-free menu is pretty…

How kid friendly is the patio area and is there any kid menu options?

We are a family friendly restaurant. However, we do ask that children be monitored at all times as we do not have a child-specific play area. There is a kids menu, just ask for them at the host stand! I hope this helps!

    Is the patio pet friendly?

They have an outdoor area with games and things and yes pets are allowed there! Just has to be on a leash

Do they have bottomless mimosa brunch?? I just got here and they do not have bottemless mimosa brunch

    Yes!

Do you use any peanut oil in the restaurant?

We do have peanut oil in the building. However, it is not in use.

Joe's Kansas City Bar-B-Que -- The Rocket Pig Was Worth the Trip!…read more My oh my, Joe's lived up to the hype! This place was your typical BBQ stop, classic interior, simple and the smells whoa! After settling into our Airbnb, my wife and I needed dinner. We arrived around 8:15 PM and there were STILL 15-20 people ahead of us. At that hour, seeing a line told me we were probably in the right place. I planned to keep things simple: Just get a pulled pork sandwich. Then I saw the Rocket Pig. Pulled pork, BBQ glaze, bacon, pepper jack cheese, BBQ mayo and fried jalapeños. I at least showed some restraint and ordered the regular instead of the jumbo. Rocket Pig -- 10/10! This thing was outstanding. Smoky, cheesy, a little spicy, messy and loaded with flavor. My taste buds were tingling! While standing in line, we struck up a conversation with two guys from Chicago who told us people come to Joe's for the meat and the sides generally take a back seat. Since I'm definitely a "side guy," I had to find out for myself. The BBQ beans were a disappointment -- 4/10 for me. They simply didn't match the quality of everything else. My wife went with the regular pulled pork sandwich and, after getting a recommendation from one of the employees, ordered the cornbread. Winner! 10/10. Then came the banana pudding. We were told, "Don't pass on it." Melissa, who took our order, said there were only three left. DONE. Give us one! Banana pudding -- 10/10. It may honestly be some of the best banana pudding I've ever tasted. Creamy, rich and topped with crushed Heath Bar. I seriously considered getting back in line and buying the other two for later. In hindsight, I probably should have! We were also told that during the World Cup the line stretched outside and wrapped around the building, with people waiting more than two hours. After eating here, I understand why. Fortunately, our wait was only about 20 minutes, and it was absolutely worth it. Would I return? Without hesitation. But this is Kansas City, and there are still more BBQ joints I need to try! If you're visiting KC, Joe's belongs on your list. And if you like a loaded BBQ sandwich, GET THE ROCKET PIG! Food: Rocket Pig: 10/10 Cornbread: 10/10 Banana Pudding: 10/10 BBQ Beans: 4/10 Overall:

I have heard this place normally has a long line so try and go on off times. I ordered the Burnt End Dinner for $25.99 and it comes with two sides. I chose the baked beans and the street corn based on recommendation. The Burnt End Dinner isn't always available so if you see it order it. Trust me. This is my first time here and I was super excited. I read all the reviews and I knew exactly what I was going to order. When I got the burnt ends they looked heavenly. They were so incredibly tender yet still had texture. The fat had completely melted throughout the meat and kept everything moist. The seasoning was on point. Not too much but still added this great smoke and depth of flavor. Absolutely phenomenal. As for the baked beans, 100% recommend. They had chunks of meat in them and were both sweet and had a nice kick. So good. As for the street corn it was nice and salty, creamy, and sweet. The corn still had texture and was addictive. The whole meal came with three slices of bread and a couple of pickles to cleanse the palate. They also provided their hot barbecue sauce and their original. Both were amazing but the spicy is chef's kiss. So good!

The casual, counter-service setup has a true neighborhood BBQ joint feel, and it's easy to see why both locals and visitors recommend it. The restaurant is especially known for its ribs and burnt ends, and it's common for popular items to sell out later in the day, so arriving early is a smart idea. The barbecue was outstanding. The meat was tender, smoky, and packed with flavor, with the perfect balance of bark and juiciness. Every bite tasted like it had spent hours in the smoker, and the house barbecue sauce complemented the meat without masking its natural flavor. Portions were generous, making it an excellent value for the quality you receive. The sides were just as enjoyable and rounded out the meal nicely. Everything was served hot and fresh, and the fast-moving counter service kept the line moving efficiently even when the restaurant was busy. Overall, Slap's BBQ delivers exactly what people hope to find when they come to Kansas City for barbecue--authentic smoked meats, generous portions, and a laid-back atmosphere. Whether you're a local or visiting for the first time, this is a barbecue destination that's well worth experiencing.

So I have had Slap's BBQ once before at a catered event, but I had never been to the restaurant…read moremyself. The catered event was a couple of years back. First thing I'll say is that even though they do have designated parking, it can be rather hectic getting a parking spot and/or parking on the street because it's a rather busy street and they have a lot of traffic. I came in on a Sunday evening around 5:00, and there was still a line out the door and to the end of the parking lot. It was about 93 degrees outside and probably felt even hotter. I'll say that the inside of the restaurant, where you can order, is air-conditioned. The line, considering how long it was, moved pretty quickly. I'll also say that the menu had a couple of different things that were blacked out, so it was a little hard to decipher what wasn't available. I did look online previously and had a reasonable idea of what I wanted, but you have enough time while standing in line to make a decision on what to order. I will say that the staff was great. They got our order to us pretty quickly, including what they had to bring out to us. They were nice and courteous. Everything you need can be found outside. We sat in the screening area. The biggest issue is that it's ridiculously hot outside in the summer. Even though it is screened in and covered, the fans just don't do enough. They have some overhead heaters that look like they're quality for when it's cooler outside. It would be great if they had a spot that was cooler than that. There are a lot of other barbecue places around. They provide air conditioning. I know every place is different, but this place charges similar prices to other places. Even when I left a little bit after 6:00, there was still a line. As a matter of fact, it was longer than when I got there. A lot of people are in from out of town for events. I'd have to say, as someone who's lived here for decades and decades, there are better places to go that will give you the experience that this place has been known for, but they're not offering it, at least when I went. I went ahead and ordered the three rib burnt-in combo, getting hush puppies and cheese curds as my sides. I would have to say that I would have to give that a three out of five. The cheese curds were cooked a little too long. They had good flavor in the middle, but weren't as moist as I would like in the center, and were a little too crunchy on the outside. The cheese curds tasted like the last of the grease. The cheese didn't have a good flavor to it. It just looked like it absorbed the worst of the grease. They were made fresh. They actually brought them out to the table. I sat in a screening area. There was no air conditioning. There was a breeze from outside, and the fans were on. I'll say with that seating situation, we were sitting at the table sweating, even when it was time to leave. All the air conditioning from the ordering inside had worn off at that point. The ribs were nice and tender, not stringy at all, but the only flavor that I was able to notice was whatever seasoning the guy put on top after he cut them before he presented them to me. The sauces were either sweet or spicy. The sweet tasted like syrup. The spicy had a little bit of a kick to it, but had undertones of the sweet. That's not my preference, but overall, my food was bland. I've had them in the past, and they did have more flavor. I will say texture-wise it was on point, but from a flavor standpoint, it wasn't it. We did get bread and pickles that came with the combo. The pickles were good. I didn't try the bread. I opted for water as my preference. It was nice and cold, clean, free water. Tastes pretty good. My son ended up coming with me. Actually, he brought me as a Father's Day gesture, so we came the week after Father's Day. He ended up getting the burnt end with the jalapeño brat, and he liked it. He said it had good flavor, but the burnt ends were more fat than meat, and that the sauce really carried the burnt ends, from his perspective. He said to me that his mac and cheese was just okay. He said it was piping hot, as it came from the bottom of the pan. I don't know what that means. I'm not a mac and cheese person. He also stated that the baked beans had meat in them. They were okay, was his sentiment. That will be another three out of five. I would love to have more smoke and flavor in the meat, as well as more seasoning/soul in the sides.

Some background: I've been a few times now, but never under good circumstances. The first time I was at their food truck right when they opened and they were short on a few items. When I got home the sides weren't great, but I kind of chalked it up to them not being fully ready for me. The second time I went, in contrast I was probably their last diner in their newly opened space. I had a friend with me who had just come off the plane and needed a late dinner. The food was good, but again they were out of a bunch of things we wanted to try and I wasn't blown away. Now, my husband and I made the trip over to their location in Columbus Park about a month ago during regular dining hours and had an absolutely incredible bbq dinner from start to finish. The server was amazing, the food was insanely tender and delicious, and we left so so so full in the best way possible. This was what I had heard from others and what I was expecting and I was so happy to be able to report that they do live up to the hype, and if you catch them on an off day, give some grace and try again as this local spot is worth it. Oh, and get the cheese dip with bbq in it - I forget what kind of meat that features but holy hell was that great.

The pulled pork was amazing. Everything was tender and tasty. The Burton stole the show. This law was OK. But who has room for slow when you have burnt ends and brisket? Treat yourself and get the three meat plate! You know you wanna do it. I was able to finish it. Inside was packed so it was quite loud. My niece said she was overstimulated but she got over it with the pulled pork sandwich and fries.

Good BBQ, Great Service -- Just Didn't Wow Us…read more When you're in Kansas City, you have to eat BBQ! After an incredible meal at Joe's KC, we decided to give Jack Stack Barbecue a try. First impressions were excellent. The restaurant is beautiful and definitely has a more upscale atmosphere than your typical BBQ joint. I ordered the brisket and burnt ends with fries. Both meats were good -- tender, flavorful and well prepared -- but neither really left me wanting more. There was nothing wrong with them; they just didn't have that memorable factor I was hoping for from Kansas City BBQ. My wife ordered the loaded baked potato with burnt ends. Her opinion was similar: good, but probably not something she would order again. Our server, Adam, was excellent. He was friendly, attentive and offered several recommendations. He suggested the cheesy corn bake, which sounded fantastic. Unfortunately, that one missed the mark for us. It reminded me more of mac & cheese with corn mixed into it than the creamy corn casserole I had imagined. Overall, this was a good meal with excellent service in a beautiful restaurant. I can understand why Jack Stack has such a following, but for us it just didn't have that "I can't wait to come back" factor. I'm glad we tried it, but next time we're in Kansas City, I think we'll continue exploring some of the other BBQ legends. In hindsight...maybe we should've tried Gates! ‍

As far as bar stops go when you're at P&L, County Road Ice House probably isn't the first one on…read morethe list. No, this is more of a sit-yourself-down kind of place, instead of being a make-your-way-to-the-bar-for-yet-another-drink kind of place. But they serve up some Joe's Kansas City BBQ, so you know they've got a reason to pull you in. Nothing says Kansas City quite like smoked meats & fabulous sauces, so get comfy & sample a Z-Man. There is plenty else on the menu, but if you're vegan or vegan-ish, then good luck or maybe have a cheat day. The BBQ is fantastic and Ice House has added their own bar & grille twists, so you have options beyond smoked meats. Seating is pretty good, and with both a wraparound bar and table service, there are plenty of options. As is the norm these days, there are screens in all directions, so you just don't miss a single moment of sportsball if that's your jam. P&L is a jammed up place when events are happening, so if you can find yourself a spot to sit and enjoy, then that's a win. County Road offers that and more, and it's only real knock is the service levels, which can be slow at busy times. But hey, if you have a seat and maybe a drink, then wait just a few extra minutes for servers to plow their way through the bar crowd. Definitely worth it for the BBQ alone.
