First time was at least 7 years ago with my mum and I remember how pleased she was with our meal that I decided to give this place ago again with my husband and friends. It was delicious, but I must say how UNPLEASED i was with our server. She was so dismissive of our vegetarian friends and scoffed at our request to see if there was anything they could eat. All we could get them were fries. We were planning on treating our friends, but the server didn't even try to be friendly or accommodating. We visited Brophy Bros on a chilly overcast Saturday afternoon in the Santa Barbara Marina. Craving New England Clam Chowder, we headed upstairs to get a table in the dining room. This is a very popular restaurant and a table for two was going to take 45 minutes. However, the hostess suggested that we try to grab an open seating table downstairs in their Oyster Bar, which we did. They have an abbreviated menu, but we just wanted some chowder and oysters, something light. We sat outside for a great view of the marina, bundled up in our jackets. There's no service outside, so boyfriend placed our order at the bar. A server came out and gave us ice water with lemon, small plates, napkins and silverware. The New England Clam Chowder ($10.50 for a bowl) was thick, but good. Nice, warm and filling. We also ordered the Oysters Rockefeller ($19.95 for six oysters), which were also good. Honestly, I love this place. I always bring visiting friends and family here because they have really good food. The fish and chips is great and a friend favorite. Their seafood pasta is also really good but can sometimes be hit or miss because occasionally they'll add too much lemon and it just tastes sour. My vegetarian friend liked their cauliflower sandwich, if any of your friends need veggie options. Price is also decent for Santa Barbara. I personally think this place has the best clam chowder in SB (better than the places on the wharf) but sadly they don't serve them in bread bowls. They do give bread on the side, which is also very delicious, but I wish they had bread bowls cause sometimes a girl wants a clam chowder bread bowl like they had as a kid at Disneyland. The place itself can feel pretty crowded and small and service can get a touch slower during busy hours but that's to be expected for such a popular place. Parking is a little difficult to find as it is a tourist destination. It was confusing for a minute the restaurant is on the second floor and didn't know where the stairs were. Once we found our way upstairs the entire place was bustling and looked full. I was surprised we got a table right away inside on the middle of the floor. If you want quiet, this is not the place for you. All the tables are elbows away from each other so be careful walking inside. There are tons of service walking around constantly so if you want more water or bread just look up and can ask someone. They give complimentary sourdough bread. The bread is good and fresh. Had the fish and chips, fried scallops, and calamari. Everything was fresh and well fried. Even the fries were fresh. There are no bathrooms specifically associated with the restaurant. You have to go outside and around the corner of the shared building. Maybe I would go back but not during rush hour. Total headache from the constant loud noise. Steamed Mussels with Broth (5/5!!): The best thing on their menu I must say. For only $20 they give massive amounts of large mussels in a white wine, garlic, butter, pepper, parsley, and olive oil broth! I just came back from Italy and this dish tasted exactly like the one I had there which was divine. The mussels inside were huge and meaty while the sauce was bursting with flavor. We dipped the bread they gave us in the leftover broth and our table enjoyed every last drop of it. Seafood Pasta (4/5): this came with the large portions of shrimp and sea scallops sautéed with garlic, lemon, white wine, tomato, basil, and derived over linguini with Parmesan cheese. This dish was light but still flavorful. They did not skimp on the seafood here! We poured some of our mussels broth over the linguini and it soaked up all the garlicky flavor. Clam Chowder (5/5): So rich and deep in flavor with lots of clams in the chowder. This warms your soul if you're looking for something hearty. One of the best!
