I brought in a picture of an edgy, fashionable style. What I got was a supervisor who had the student shave my head. I look like an old man. I am embarrassed. I won't even look in the mirror. If I bring in a picture, I expect to look like the picture when I leave. I had plenty of hair to do it. I am looking for a wig to hide it until it grows enough to style fashionably. I've always really enjoyed this salon, which is why I was so disappointed by what happened on 3/18/26. My friend and I both had 5:45 appointments, but when we arrived, only mine was in the system. We were told that because my appointment was made in person and hers was booked online, only mine was actually scheduled. Even though she had a confirmation email, it didn't matter. I understand that mistakes happen, but we drove out of our way to be there, and the way the situation was handled felt less than ideal. Not handled well at all. And believe me, it's rare for me to complain - so that's how disappointed I am in the situation. read more

I've been going to the Mentor Brown Aveda for a year and a half, and never had anything less than an excellent experience. a half an hour to get there, and I was excited as today is my birthday. A student named Leslie was assigned to me. she didn't introduce herself, didn't smile, had attitude from the start, and it only got worse. she tried to pitch me products, but didn't know how the products worked or what was in the products, When I tried to give feedback - it is a school after all - with her instructor present, she was condescending, rude, and interrupted me every time I attempted to speak. there are 1000 hairdressers in Cleveland... And they can all do the same thing... The difference is customer service and that's what keeps people coming back. If she had worked in a salon I would never go to her again. read more

I thoroughly enjoyed this place! I haven't cut my hair for 4 years because I haven't really had time to just give myself a "me day". I came in to see Bethany who was my hair stylist. And she just made me feel so welcomed. She calmed all my nerves that I had about cutting my hair since it's been so long. I also had the mentality that if this student messes up, it is ok because hair grows back and she's here to learn. Before she did anything to my hair, she asked me a couple of questions regarding my hair and what I wanted done. She then talked to one of her instructors about her plan and she confirmed with me if I was ok with the plan. After Bethany did her magic with her talented hands, she had the instructor look at it again before I got off the hot seat. Not only did Bethany make sure I was happy with my final look, but so did the instructor. This made me feel even more confident to come here because the instructors genuinely wants every client to be happy with their final results. Bethany did such an amazing job with my haircut and style! She was so welcoming, easy to talk to, and confident from start to finish. She made me so happy and pleased with her work that I needed to come in again to see her for something spontaneous! I haven't had a professional dye my hair since I was in high school and I just needed something different with my look. Bethany did such an absolutely amazing job with my Balayage that all of my friends were complimenting my hair for weeks! (Even the guys!). Let me be straight forward. I would appreciate it if there was a negative rating I can give on this , but unfortunately 1 is the lowest. How can you improve you ask?, well let me just summarize my experience with this particular institute that has an illusion that they're so elite! My experience holds a cosmology license for many years, so back in 2022 I was interested in expanding my knowledge in the esthetic field. While reviewing my opinions with admissions, I was informed I would need to enroll in the esthetic program, mind you without subtracting any hours seeing I already hold a cos license for many years. Because this institution must teach you the Aveda way! Going forward I enrolled evenings part time seeing I was working full time at my job. However, during the first few days I made it aware to my teachers and staff, I had a disability that I have no control over it. Unfortunately with work and school,, my disability began to get irritated. So, missing classes , caused me to speak with Maggie, and let her know I needed a leave of absence and had to put my loans on hold , plus I was paying partial out of pocket. About 4 months later after I was stable and settled, I reached out to Laura for my Fafsa by email. Over and over and over ignored me . Emailed Maggie, Laura finally answers my email as if I'm emailing her personal email. Extremely arrogant disrespectful, and condescending. So I waited again, for her highness to find time to email me back. To be clear, I'm doing these emails for almost two months then Laura comes back with a different schedule for payment and payment amount. I continue again to email Laura , because remember she's too high class to take calls from the individuals below her. I ask why is this different from before?, she repeatedly continues to be unprofessional, and condescending, and proceeds to tell me to read the schedule she sent. I approach again with a respectful tone in my email addressing the issue, again, the same answer, with that typical Strongsville attitude, like they are superior!!! Strongsville residents, do you realize you're not even on the map!! Get over yourselves!! You're not that important!! Therefore, I know there are policies that are in the handbook where you're not allowed to discriminate against anyone with a disability, and that is how I felt, after my neurologist recommended my leave of absence and disclosed my disability. read more

DO NOT BOOK YOUR WEDDING HAIR HERE!! I scheduled an appointment online for a formal style over a month prior to my wedding (tomorrow June 21). I got a voicemail from Connie at Brown Aveda yesterday, two days before my wedding, saying that the 11 AM spot they offered is not available, as it is lunch hour. Weird... I wonder why would they list that as an option online? I continued to listen and Connie then gave me the option to reschedule at either 9:30 or 12:45 (my wedding is at 5 - can't do my hair super early so 9:30 was a no go). I called back 30 minutes later and left a message saying that I would like the 12:45 appointment, and left my name and number if they needed anything else from me. No big deal, easy fix. I got a text today - the day before my wedding - asking to confirm my appointment at 9:30. I called the number listed in the text to see if we could fix their mistake and talked to Taylor at the front desk (who I don't blame for any of this). She said no, the only appointment available was at 9:30 and there were no other options. I asked to speak to a manager or Connie since she was the one who changed my appointment, and Taylor said the manager doesn't come in until 4 HOURS LATER. How do you run a business with no manager present? I'm usually very understanding and forgiving, but today I am LIVID. Screwing me over and leaving me scrambling to find a hairstylist one day before the biggest event of my life is unprofessional and insulting. Imagine being a bright young and happy person, excited to start your path to being a cosmetologist! A creative, passionate, and wonderful career choice... except that you decide to go to brown aveda institute of cosmetology in strongsville Ohio, not knowing that Rachel Carr and (certain) instructors decide to suck every bit of joy you'll ever feel in an entire crude, tedious, and absolutely passion killing year you'll ever have. The only thing this school could ever do is prepare you for is state board and wanting to d!e. I wake up (to this after graduated day, fully working in a salon now) crying and sweating occasionally after having literal nightmares about being back in the school. The rules changed CONSTANTLY, depending on the mood of the instructor of the day, and Rachel and her minions would constantly treat every student in a meeting (no matter how old, and even if they had kids) like actual stupid little toddlers. Consistently walking around with a pompous attitude and a snarky smirk on her face. I felt constantly anxious as if I would be kicked out for any moment simply for BREATHING wrong around her. Her attitude not only affected students, but clientele as well who would constantly ask me why she was so rude, condescending, and judgmental. Know this: if you are a person of color and wanting to go to this school. Do NOT. Rachel will probably call the police on you if you so much as look at her wrong! She not only called the police on an African American students MOTHER for being upset that we students were not allowed to ever sit down, eat , or take a break (I for one nearly passed out a number of times due to lack of breaks and on going medical issues, that which I brought up to the staff multiple times and was essentially told to get over it. She ALSO called the police on an African American student for sitting down a few minutes past her break because she didn't leave Rachel's school fast enough after being told to leave because she was a few minutes past break.. the twist? Multiple white students were sitting down, past break! In my time there, students were made to clean up drainage backup. At my start, we had access to a break room, with a fridge, a microwave, and a few tables and chairs. If you didn't have money to spend on lunches because you spend 40+ hours a week at school and don't have time for a full time job in this economy, FORGET IT. they turned the fridge entirely around, ripped out the microwave, and took away the chairs and tables. Do you have diabetes? Doesn't matter, good luck having appropriate access to your (refrigerated) medication. If you went here and got sick often, and drank out of the water station (the black one in the back!) well that's why. I (among other students) witnessed the woman herself Rachel Carr fill it up with one of the black pedicure bowls because she couldn't find a pitcher! Multiple queer, and trans, students went here and depending on who she liked, they got called their preferred names or got ignored about them completely (causing multiple students EXTREME distress). One male trans student was told by multiple of the male staff and other students they were ALL comfortable with him using the men's bathroom!! Fantastic! Except Rachel did NOT enjoy this, and repeatedly told him he was not allowed to use it despite the consent of literally every male in the building. My time there was filled with pain, tears, and anxiety attacks, To this day if I am not five minutes or more early for my shift at work I come in sobbing. The anxiety and mental heath issues this school caused me have remained to this day, despite me being over a year graduated. It was an unsafe, uncomfortable, and awful environment to be in. Shawndah, Kate, Ej, Rebecca And Aja were the only instructors who made it worth it... Alina you too occasionally... but sometimes you were very rude and petty towards me when I had genuine questions and I did not feel very supported. I fully believe you need to experience some salon life in order to teach there. They took away being able to dress up for your graduation and salon tours, the only joy in the entire school. The instructors were allowed to sit, work on their school assignments, and each others hair on the floor but students were not permitted to do any of that without getting potentially written up or kicked out. Maggie was the only solace in the entire corrupt system of the upper office management! Maggie you were amazing and the only thing that saved me. read more

I LOVE Brown Aveda Institute in Strongsville, OH. I've been here 4 times already and always leave feeling rejuvenated and happy (hello, FREE hand/scalp and facial massage). They offer tea and water at your arrival too. I've also been a regular Aveda Institute customer - I attended the 2 locations in Columbus, Ohio often and I always get sad when my favourite student graduates. I LOVE the natural shampoos and conditioners. They leave my hair looking healthy and they smell great. Now, the trick is to hopefully find a student that can style your hair well and I was lucky enough to have Hailey wash and style my hair a few times and just yesterday (28 September 2017), Autumn (with the help of Lexi) washed and styled my hair. The girls know how to flat iron thick African hair like mine. For just $13 for a wash and style, you can't go wrong. These are students who are learning so you really need to be patient and work with them. Tell them what you want to get done and discuss the products going into your hair. Communication is key to healthy hair. Am I right or am I right?!?! If you are looking for other services, then they have it such as manicures and pedicures and I believe eyebrow waxing as well. I got a haircut here and the student did very well! Love my haircut! But It took longer than usual because the instructors who check the students progress kept disappearing into the back somewhere. My stylist had to continually run back and find an instructor to check off on her progress. Student cuts are great though, and the instructors make sure everything is good before you go! read more

I cannot recommend this place enough! I am a law student, so I needed someplace I could relax, have a good haircut with safe products, and not break the bank. This met all of this plus more. They did not rush my haircut or eyebrow wax at all. The student took her time and made sure to do a good job. When I asked her to change my eyebrows just a little bit, she was super nice and made sure that I was happy! My haircut turned out amazing. I took off around 4 inches, added layers, and framed by face. For $20, I got my hair washed, cut, styled with layers, blow dried, and flat ironed. I was shocked at the price and even more so how good it turned out. I literally cannot recommend this place enough. I found my new studio, and on top of that, I'm helping students who are about to go to the best of the best salons. Brown Aveda does a great job in training their students, and I am extremely happy with how everything turned out. Also, you cannot tip your stylist since it is a school. My gal Shea was super! I got there on time and was taken right away. Shea greeted me like a pro, like she's been doing it for years. We went over my needs/wants and looked at a pic on her iPad to verify. Her instructor/supervisor greeted me next and discussed plans for my hair. Next I was at the wash sink and opted for the complimentary and quick soothing facial and hand/arm rub. Granted, the cut and style took longer than a haircut in a regular salon, but keep in mind, these are students and Shea demanded perfection. For the price, $20, it was a super deal and next time I'm back in Strongsville I will be making another appt. w/Shea. I tried to tip her but they're not even allowed to take them! review as former student, written anonymously due the nature of how staff acts towards those who disagree with them. it's hard to feel welcomed and encouraged in an environment that is increasingly unwelcoming with rules that are ambiguous and change depending on the mood of the instructor. there were times i didn't want to ask an instructor a question related to a client or what i was working on because i was so used to a condescending or exasperated response. as a former educator myself, i know it is completely possible to treat students with respect while maintaining authority; many of the teachers seem incapable of doing so with the exception of tracy and shawndah, who are wonderful teachers and made my time there palatable. when i started at the school, there was a break room for students with a fridge, microwave, tables, and chairs. this room was intended for students to be able to take their lunch break and their 10-minute breaks during the day. we are there for 11hours including our lunch break. this was taken away from us causing us to not be able to bring our lunches if it needed to be refrigerated or cooked in a microwave. not only does this make us being at school more expensive because we had to then buy lunches if we wanted them to be hot, but for many students it encouraged unhealthy restrictive eating behaviors due to inaccessibility of affordable and fresh lunches. the break room was also the only place we could sit to do our school work such as projects and practice tests on days that were not class days. then, because we were not allowed to sit anywhere, our option was to stand at our station and do our school work at hip level. i also witnessed a lot of insensitivity and situations that were ethically wrong. there were a lot of situations where discipline was inconsistent with the offense being the same with the only difference being the race of the student. we also have a handful of transgender and queer students in all of the class levels who go by chosen names. despite all paperwork and our online scheduling system having the correct names, there have been multiple instances where front desk will call out their deadnames over the loud speaker telling them that they have a guest, which is very triggering to students who no longer associate with that identity. then the student is expected to take the client as if they weren't just publicly disrespected. i could certainly go on for a while, but to summarize, i have never felt so invaluable and afraid to speak than my time at brown aveda. they treat the students like fourth graders though we are mostly in our mid twenties. this was easily the hardest thing i have mentally gone through and i only got through by seeing two therapists regularly and being put on various medications. i will not be recommending that anyone goes here as a student, and if you choose to go here as a client, please be kind to your stylist, they are already going through a lot. read more

I am leaving this review anonymously as I have learned the pettiness of the staff here very closely, and I fear my brutal honesty will be too much for their already scorned egos to handle. I attended and graduated from BAI with my 1,500 Cosmetology hours after what felt like an eternity, but from what I have grown to understand in my time at BAI, nothing i'm going to mention in this review pertains to Esthetician students, as they are put on a pedestal and do not face a single drop of the tyranny that the Cosmetology students endure. I feel as if I could have really enjoyed my time at Brown, if it weren't for Rachel Carr and her minion Kristin, better known as KBall. I'd like to preface that educators at BAI treated me extremely well. Shawndah, Rebecca, Tracy and Alina were the light of my days at BAI, but the administration is extremely corrupt, disregarding Maggie, who is someone to turn to in dark times. Kball is someone who i felt consistently attacked by throughout my time at BAI, through the days where I was made to feel immensely undermined and targeted, she never failed to top it off with her (typically unneeded) two cents from H3ll. Rachel, the big dog director, walks around with a chip on her shoulder and this face that radiates "i think im better than everyone in this building", as if her entire career at BAI isnt based off of the fact that she could not be financially successful in this industry as a stylist, so she turned to the next best thing. Dictatorship over a school of aspiring artists, sucking the motivation and sparkle out of anyone she chooses to torment that day. She was passive aggressive towards the students but ALSO the guests on a regular basis (I received complaints on many, many occasions about her attitude, but feared the repercussions of speaking up and ultimately stayed silent. until now.) Aside from her constant need to walk around with her chest puffed out, literally, she was extremely condescending towards students and guests and was constantly playing this weird fake nice and relatable character (that was as see-through as some of the leggings she wears), but at least she tried to pretend she wasn't an absolutely miserable human being. KBall on the other hand not only made it extremely obvious that she is taking her self induced misery out on the students and staff, but allowed her lack of personal hygiene to taint the air of BAI on a daily basis. This wouldn't be something I would typically comment on, if it weren't to the point where I had not one, but three clients in my time at BAI complain about the unbearable stench trail she left behind as she walked, as well as hearing every single other student speak on it, as well as the other staff. The unprofessionalism behind walking into an establishment that spends so much time preaching to be professional smelling this way is mind blowing, but that isn't my point. The directors of this school make it hard enough through their love of talking down on students and staff, as well as guests, but one thing that really blew my mind here at BAI was the way they constantly made up rules as they felt necessary. I witnessed many, many sets of new rules that made ZERO sense be created out of thin air, all of which conflicted the new rules that were created many times just the week before. I won't go into detail about these rules, there are so many of them, but if you wish to try your luck or the luck of your child in finding out what I mean, be my guest. The directors here choose to bully the minorities who attend school here, which has been talked about for as long as I had been there, therefore I know it wasn't just what I had seen. So, if you aren't a financially blessed cis white straight woman, you're in for a treat. If you or someone you know and love is considering attending school here, please save yourself the year + of depression, borderline abuse, anxiety, self doubt, hatred, misery, unnecessary hyper criticism, lack of reinforcement, bullying, homophobia, and oppression that is bestowed upon students at Strongsville. read more

Don't take your children. Or your mother. I was excited to have my first real haircut since growing it back after chemo. But after arriving the woman working the front desk informed me that I could not bring my 6 year old back with me. Apparently there was a policy put into place that day that would not allow anyone on the floor who was not receiving a service. I say that day because literally 10 days prior I had been in the same salon with my son and my mother. He was the one having a service performed. So both my mother and I were there on the floor. When I asked why a salon would have such a stupid policy the response was dangerous flying scissors. After she made me feel like a stupid idiot and a bad parent I left without a haircut or a happy experience. One star was earned because the salon smells like heaven read more

COVID protocols seem to be nonexistent here. Not only were workers unmasked, I was surprised to learn my stylist wasn't vaccinated. I passed on getting the add-on facial (which I would have gotten) as I didn't want someone potentially breathing the coronavirus inches from my face. She also severely butchered my hair with heavy layers when I simply asked for a healthy trim. read more

If you are wanting to come here just for fun, a typical spa experience, or because you want to save money, I HIGHLY recommend just going to a normal nail or hair salon. At least for a mani/pedi it isn't cheaper than a good salon and the services are not nearly as nice or comfortable as a normal nail salon. So definitely go if you want to support beauty students in training, but I will not be returning just for a spa day or for quality services. Makes sense, it is a school. I've been going to Aveda institutes for a long time, since my college days of living on ramen and going to Aveda to get a haircut was the epitome of luxury. I've gotten haircuts, massages, facials, manicures, pedicures. While I have really enjoyed my time with them, I think it's time I graduate from Aveda institutes. The things I love about Aveda are still there - complimentary hand and scalp massage and mini facial with their $15 haircut, overall great prices on services, students and instructors who are excited to learn and teach. The frustrating things are always bound to happen - waiting anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes for my student to get me to start the service, haircuts taking 2 to 3 hours, delays between instructor check ins, no sense of doing things efficiently​, huge variability in quality of service every time. Recently I had the worst Aveda haircut experience I've ever had in my over 10 years with Aveda institutes. I was offered a complimentary service and the director reached out to me to talk about what happened, which I did appreciate. If you're looking for a relaxing spa experience, this place is not for you. The place is brightly lit with fluorescent lights and the students are chit chatting all around. There is always some slight anxiety as you wonder if your student is a total newbie and is gonna fuck up your shit. I guess my tolerance of the crap has worn out and I'd rather just pay a little more to get the relaxing spa experience with a little more confidence in the service I'm getting. I used to only care about having a good haircut by the end or my nails looking good at the end. If you're ok with that, and don't care about the experience or spending extra time here, then this place is for you. The anxiety is generally alleviated by the end, as the instructors provide great instruction and fix any problems. I've gotten some absolutely amazing haircuts here. So this is my ode to you, Brown Aveda. Thank you for the memories. I leave you with my conflicted 4 star review. I may be back for laughs once in a while, but I'm gonna go look for my very own hairdresser now. I hope we both find happiness, separately. read more

My experience with a student here today was great! She did my nails wonderfully and was great to talk to. The work she did was wonderful and I'm happy with the service. The star was removed because of how I was treated when I walked into the school. I was told to be on time and ready for my services. I got there MINUTES before my appointment (no, I wasn't a walk in), filled out the form and sat down. I waited close to 45 minutes for someone to come get me. At the 30 minute mark, I went up to speak to the receptionist, just as a friendly reminder that I was still here since she didn't really acknowledge me, to begin with. She immediately got defensive when I said that I had been waiting for 30 minutes and I was wondering how much longer (no tone, mind you). "Well, this is a school. We don't promise 'time' because we don't know how long it takes." ... Yeah, I get that it's a school. I've been to this school, as well as other beauty schools, numerous times. I've never waited THIS long and I wasn't sure how much longer I would be waiting so I asked rather than getting upset and leaving. There is no need to be defensive. So I said, "Ok then." and sat back down. I waited another 15 minutes. As I was going to get back up to endure another 2 minutes of the receptionist lecturing me, the student came and grabbed me. NOTHING from the receptionist. Maybe be a little friendlier at the front desk. I showed up on time like I was instructed, you can at least be a little courteous and just let me know there's a wait rather than ignoring the ONLY PERSON waiting. read more

My daughter is at the end of her program there and I couldn't be happier about that! Extremely dissatisfied with their policies and procedures. Paying big money for my daughter to sit and learn/do nothing now that she's at the end. According to my daughter, the good teachers have all left and the current instructors are substandard at best. Several separate cases of Covid here (whether they were customers or students, I don't know) and they only closed to properly sanitize once the first time I believe and not all the other times.
