Brown Bag always provides me a consistent lunch when I'm in a hurry! I was craving a soup and sandwich on a rainy afternoon before my 1PM meeting and popped into Brown Bag. It was very busy, but their staff ensured they were getting through each order as fast as they could. With it being so hectic on a workday, the staff was very kind and accommodated everyone's orders efficiently. I got the Roma Sandwich (toasted bread, pesto, tomato, and mozzarella) and the Creamy Tomato Soup. I absolutely loved this flavorful combo and appreciated the high quality ingredients! The store is a kiosk in L'enfant Plaza that has no seating. However, there are plenty of seats right next to the restaurant. Additionally, you can use their touchscreen to order and pay when you get up to the register. In addition, I really liked how the soups are self-serve on the side of their establishment. This helped cut down on time as I waited for my sandwich along with 15 other people ahead of me. $7.65 for a box of "Thai" noodles that didn't even include a meat choice or tofu? Oh, because that's between $2 to $3.50 EXTRA pre-tax. And that excuse for a "sauce" that seems like it came out of a limited-edition Kraft Macaroni box?! What?! I ordered the Bangkok rice noodles - no drink, no side, no meat. Just peppers, tiny carrot slices, and the most watered-down "curry sauce" I've ever had in my life. Gave two stars just because the noodles were at least cooked right; service was quick and courteous; and they also offer a variety of salads, sandwiches, and soups I unfortunately don't think I'm interested in ever trying after this lackluster experience. With so many good food truck choices and much better chains in the vicinity (by 500 12th St. and the food truck lineup in front of one of the exits of LEnfant metro stop, by the Wells Fargo), I would *never* come back here. I legit felt robbed - my mediocre 'meal' couldn't have costed more than a dollar to make. I can't help but wonder... HOW do they make this terrible, barely-spiced *water* concoction they dare call red Thai curry sauce?! Out of powder? I went here for lunch Thursday and ordered a custom salad. It was really good (large and filling) and I thought an overall decent value for the price, however, my order was incorrect. I felt bougey and ordered avocado, but my spinach salad was missing the avocado and I didn't realize this until I was already back in my hotel room. Could I have gone back? Sure as I was staying next door, but I'm pregnant and lazy. So I would advise you to double check your order before you leave L'Enfant Plaza. However, the salad was so good that I decided to go back for lunch the next day and get another spinach salad with oil and vinegar dressing, chicken, feta, olives, quinoa, and grapes (yum!), but this time I wasn't going to pay extra for avocado. While paying for my salad I mentioned to the cashier that I had come the day before and ordered avocado on my salad, but didn't receive it. He kind of just nodded and I thought, well he didn't give a beep. I was wrong. I didn't even see him slip to the back to tell the gentleman preparing my salad to add avocado, but next thing I know my beautiful, big salad was ready and it was topped with the avocado I didn't get the day before. So thank you! Customer service goes a long way and I wish I had a Brown Bag near me where I live. Located in the L'Enfant Metro food court, this counter service place doesn't have a giant line all the time so I would recommend it if you want a salad, sandwich, soup, or pasta but don't want to wait elsewhere. I had the Fall Harvest Chicken Salad, which ended up being $12 after tax. I paid for extra blue cheese, but I definitely didn't get it. I really like the flavor and dressing (warning they use a lot of dressing) Salads are a big portion, so it makes for a filling lunch & I really liked my salad. It is unreal how bad the customer service was here the past two visits I made here. I frequent brown bag for their roasted chicken salad, which tastes pretty good. That being said, definitely NOT WORTH dealing with the rudeness. I ordered for pick up, requesting that my dressing be mixed into the order. When I picked my orders up they were not. That wouldn't really be a big deal, but when I requested that it was mixed it the cashier rudely told me I had to go wait in line. The attitude was ridiculous. I would have let it go BUT when I opened my order, I realized they had forgotten my $2 avocado addition. I called brown bag back and tried to explain the situation but the same cashier hung up on me as I was speaking..... that was the last straw. Interesting ordering style. There's 3 little kiosks near the entrance where you enter your order digitally and receive an order slip. You take your order to the cashier, who doesn't say a word and just holds his hand out for your order slip and card. Then you just loiter around the pretty cramped area getting in everyone's way until your number gets called at the counter. Got the Remember the Alamo salad. Taste was decent, nothing special. This place charges for every little add-on/topping for your salad and has literally 3 screens of just optional add-ons. Opted for just an egg on top of my salad, and paid in total around $12 for a salad that I probably won't do again. read more

I LOVE the Brown Bag! The establishment is clean and the service is usually fast. Initially I had trouble figuring out the computer ordering system but the cashier was more than helpful. Today I built my own salad with romaine lettuce, carrots, cucumbers, grapes, shrimp and balsamic vinaigrette dressing. Usually I order the Harvest salad. The chocolate chip cookies are soft and fresh too! The best thing for me is how clean the serving area is kept and seeing the workers practice proper hygiene. Clean gloves and a neat work area. Just perpetually unimpressed. This is my third and last meal from Brown Bag. Pad Thai is like pizza. Even when it is meh, it is still pretty damn good. Not at Brown Bag. The sauce is too heavy in vinegar and lacks the flavor complexity of even an average Pad Thai sauce. I just paid $11ish for a huge bucket of noodles with not much by way of the promised eggs, cilantro, vegetables or peanuts (+$.50) and insipid tofu. I dug out all of the tofu (+$2.00) and threw away 2/3 of the bucket of noodles. Go to their website - the picture they show is *nothing* like what they give you. I don't even remember what I ordered from them the last two times, but I'm pretty much done. There are more interesting places to eat at L'Enfant Plaza. Visit one of them. read more

Sorry, not a fan. Brown Bag is one of the newer restaurants to join the other L'Enfant Plaza eateries. It carries, soups, salads, sandwiches and noodle bowls. Before entering into the restaurant, you have to stand in a line to use a touch screen computer to place your order. Not sure about anyone else, but this can be a bit tricky, especially if it's the first time you've come here or if you don't really know the menu. Not to mention, senior citizens (or older clientele) could have a difficult time maneuvering through the ordering process. Not everyone is computer savvy. I, for one, am tired of doing all the work for these companies. I normally am forced to ring myself up at the self serve registers at the grocery store and now this. At BB someone should be there taking my order for me, so I don't have to fumble around trying to figure out how I should order. Not to mention, this isn't a cheap place to eat, so the fact that I have to do all the work and still pay darn near $10 for a salad is pretty ridiculous. After you place your order with the computer, the computer prints out your receipt and you step around to pay for your meal. Your order number is called and you pick up your food and go. I ordered the BBQ Chicken Salad and it was pretty horrible. The chicken was extremely bland and was the furthest thing from BBQ as possible. The salad as a whole lacked the flavor I think of when I think, "BBQ Chicken!" The only bright side to this salad was the fried onion pieces that were in the salad. Those were pretty tasty. It's almost like they gave me the wrong salad because the dressing nor the other ingredients matched up to an actual BBQ Chicken Salad. I can't really comment on how the staff was because you really don't interact with them. Other than the person collecting your money for your order and the person yelling your order number out, you don't interact with the staff at all. The two stars are for how fast my order came out and the fried onions...the only two positives I can think of. Needless to say, I won't be back here anymore. If I do, I'll have to try something else, but since I think the prices are too expensive for what you get, I may not even come back to try anything else. Great place. So far, I've had the breakfast huevos wrap, the chili, the chicken & corn chowder, the Bangkok noodles, and a couple of salads. Loved EVERYTHING except the Thai salad (the dressing doesn't seem to have a lot of flavor, but the other salad ingredients were great together) and the Huevos wrap (the flavor of the oil seemed to overpower the ingredients inside the wrap, which I was really looking forward to - eggs, cheese, black beans, corn, bell pepper and a little lime juice). Brown Bag offers soups, salads, noodles, and sandwiches. This review is just for their Bangkok noodle bowl with blackened chicken. You can choose from several flavor bases for your noodles (there's a red curry option that I got called Bangkok, and several iterations of Greek, Cajun, Italian, etc.), as well as what actual noodles you would like (eg. quinoa, penne, rice noodles) The Bangkok noodle bowl was the most flavorless, overpriced, and overcooked thing I've had in a long time. There wasn't a speck of anything that looked remotely blackened, although it did have some chicken that tasted steamed and the sauce didn't lend any flavor. The noodles were also overcooked and falling apart. I was half tempted to put soy sauce on the whole thing and call it a day. PRICING I added broccoli for $.50 and got two whole tiny florets for it. Adding chicken was an additional $2, so after tax I got out of there with an $10.40 noodle bowl that I really didn't like. The ordering system is nice (you use a touch screen to put in your order, grab your food, then pay as you exit) but it's not clear if you're supposed to pay first or grab your food first or exercise either option. I don't get it. This place suffers from the placement of the menus. You order while outside at kiosks which is cool, but you can't see the menus well enough to have an idea what you want unless you are a regular. I ate there today and what I ordered was gross. I thought the Greek noodle dish sounded good. I added grilled steak, my biggest mistake. The guy making it seemed a bit lost. He had finished my noodles then remembered the steak so heated it in a pan by itself and added the pasta dish back to have them all the same temperature. Maybe that is how they always do it. I could barely eat it. The sauce was too thick and heavy. It is my intention to give it another try. Next time I will try to not be as hungry. I was impatient which made menu placement and the line cook's ability seem possibly worse than they should have. I will get close enough to the menu to know better what I am ordering. If the food was made as it should have been and the cook was not a fairly new hire, I don't see any reason to get anything here again. Other choices are less complicated and give better value for the cost. Before trying it today I asked a friend another time we were in the food court if she had eaten there. She said she had and she was also unimpressed. She felt it was expensive for the quality of food. The quantity in my case was too much. This lunch spot has a great concept - order yourself via a touchscreen, pay, and pick up when it's ready - however it is executed so poorly that I hadn't even my finished my sandwich before I decided to log on and write a review on Yelp. Now, let me say I have never rated anyone below 5 stars on Yelp - perhaps I really enjoy the restaurant and food industry and am compassionate with the servers because I used to be on the other side - but when I pay $10 for a NY Reuben panini I expect there to be all the ingredients. And I expect it to be hot off the panini press (heck, I'll even take lukewarm). My sandwich was none of these things. The rueben was missing the dressing, one of only 4 ingredients, and was so soggy the bread was sticking to the inside of the aluminum foil and falling apart in my hands. The meat was stuck in a small circle in the center of the bread so it didn't cover the whole sandwich (although this did allow me to pull off a lot of the extra, soggy bread) and was ice cold. I ended up ditching the sandwich halfway through and eating a yogurt I had in the fridge at work. Needless to say, I will not be ordering from here again. read more

I come to this place only when craving a salad or pasta dish with ingredients I can't get at the other restaurants around here. Overall for the price it isn't THAT great. Also, whenever I come to this location my order gets messed up. Most recently today, I got a shrimp salad, watched him make it with NO shrimp and asked him if he put shrimp in it he says yes, I tell him I don't see any in there and he says "it's in there".. of course I step to the side to check and voila, no shrimp. And I'm also missing other ingredients that I added on as well which wouldn't be so bad if certain ingredients didn't hike up the price. I've had good experiences with Brown Bag in the past, only to be sorely disappointed with my recent order. I ordered online a custom salad (essentially a Greek salad with quinoa without red onions) and found the half of the lettuce to be very wilted, and all the ingredients tasted like they were old and lacked flavor. First time trying this place. I browsed the menu but ended up just creating my own sandwich. I chose ciabatta bread (obvs) and roasted turkey (which as it turns out is hand carved, ftw). I added all of my own toppings/condiments, paid for my sandwich, and left with it in less than 5 mins. Sandwich tastes delicious. Touch screen ordering system is very convenient. Only complaint: it's a little pricey. I got a sandwich...that's it - $11. A sandwich, chips, and drink @ subway or potbelly would've easily been under $10. Likely to be one of the pricier options in this food court depending on what you order, but I like that you can get something that is relatively healthy but still substantial. Ordering is done through a touchscreen panel at the front of the shop and then you wait for the semi-open kitchen to prepare your food. I got a Bangkok-style (read: spiced sweet and sour) quinoa bowl with chicken and shrimp. Box of food contained about 2 cups of prepared quinoa, plenty of diced white meat chicken, and two shrimp. The shrimp were pretty large, but I was not impressed that I only got two. That being said, the chicken was well-cooked and there was a goodly amount of it throughout the well-sauced quinoa. My company used Brown Bag back in July for a large catered lunch and Bob at the L'Enfant location was super helpful and all the food arrived looking amazing and delicious. I have been to Brown Bag a few times and I can honestly say I have never received my complete order. In addition, the people making your food have the rudest and unprofessional comments to each other and the guest! I took my supervisor there because I wanted a salad. The touch screen does not allow you to modify anything so you have to tell them directly in the kitchen. It kinda defeats the purpose of doing it manually because their software is limited. That particular day I walked up to the salad section and gave my modifications. The person making my salad just looked at me and turned his head. My supervisor looks at me with this crazy expression and says, "Did he hear you?" I said yes as I am now used to the rude attitudes by the evening staff. This time I checked my salad since they always forget something. I mentioned that he didn't put the craisins in it. He snatched it back with a deep sigh and added them. As we walked away my supervisor was stunned that the service was so terrible. We both work in Quick Service Restaurants and were amazed that they behaved in that manner in front of their general manager! Now that particular day the GM gave us one salad for free so I can only be but so disapointed. So about these salads: they do have more salad options than the other restaurants in the facility. So I just go to another establishment to buy meat and dressing for my salad. As the other customers have complained, their food is very bland with no favor. It appears as if they dilute their dressings with water to make it last and save money. (Add 1 gallon of water to 1 gallon of ranch = 2 gallons of soupy flavorless ranch dressing). Their chicken is super dry and again, it may not even make it inside of your salad due to the careless preparations. The first salad I purchased came to $15 and I had to use a heap of salt as it had no flavor. Now I just get the basics and purchase my meats/dressing elsewhere. Now even though the food is overpriced, the service alone would make anybody not want to go back. Don't go in the evening. There is a young lady (who often wears a hat and gigantic faux lashes), and a talk young man with glasses (hat usually backwards). They argue with each other, they talk about guest in front of guest, they act like they hat their jobs, and don't want to speak to people. Ratchetness at it's finest! I really like this place, great healthy breakfast and lunch items. My personal favorites are the San Fran panini (breakfast sandwich with egg whites, Swiss cheese, avocado, and tomato on fresh bread) and for lunch I really like their build your own salad option, which offers healthy proteins like avocado, tofu, baked falafel, nuts, etc. The base price for the salad is fairly cheap so you can add extras and still have a relatively well priced lunch. read more

Today, however, when I stopped by late in the afternoon as I sometimes do, I was disappointed to find that they had closed early due to lack of traffic. The staff was busy cleaning the store and noticed I was standing outside. So, rather then looking the other way, they offered to open the store and take my order anyway!!! Wow!! I LOVE This place. The food is always fresh and delicious and I can build my own salads and sandwiches. They have the only gluten-free sandwich bread which, while not great bread, is more edible than any other gluten-free bread--it tastes like bread and cardboard or sponge. I'm eating sandwiches again after a four-year hiatus. The people who work there are wonderful. I'm a 75 year old woman who can't stand still for more than 30 seconds because it gives me severe pain in my hip.. I order my lunch on line and it's almost always perfect. The few times it hasn't been ready when I got there, I was able to sit down and they brought my lunch to me, including a cup of water. When I walk in, the meal makers recognize me and get my salad or sandwich immediately, The cashier (Dominique) hands me my receipt and water cup and the Manager (Bob) and Assistant Manger (Chris) always see to it that I'm taken care of. Most of the time they all together leave out the avocado that you pay an extra $1 for or if they do add it they've reduced the portion from half an avocado to a single skinny slice.....totally not worth it.
