Brownies is a neighborhood gem. I have a business nearby and we always get the help we need from the friendly, caring staff. Everyone that works here is great. And, they love my dog Rocco. They always offer doggie treats - even if Rocco is too boujie to eat mere dog treats. Running a business on Polk street can be a bit tough at times. Normally I hit up the hardware store near work, but logic states that I should be going someplace near where I live, since it's a hell of a lot easier than trying to pick stuff up around work hours, and then cart it home on a bike. I discovered Brownies Hardware a few months ago and have stopped in a few times for random household "stuff" and whatnot. First off, these guys are super nice. Helpful, friendly, courteous, you couldn't ask for better customer service. Just talking to the employees alone makes this a worthwhile shopping trip. Second, there's lots of stuff in here. General household goods, tools, fixing up stuff, whatever you're looking for, you'll likely find. And if you can't find it? They'll either locate it for you or they'll give you a suggestion of where you can go to find it. I came in here last week to get some keys cut and they didn't have the specific style that I needed so they redirected me to a locksmith shop around the corner. And they did it with a smile. The aisles are kind of narrow, which gives my anti-people attitude a wiggins, but I more or less expect that in hardware stores at this point. I'd rather have the aisles narrow and full of stuff than wider aisles and less stuff. Brownies will likely be the hardware store I go to regularly, partly for the convenience, mostly for the helpful attitude. read more

I frantically ran into Brownie's about a month ago to find a way to attach small cables to a 12v battery for a work event. I don't know *anything* about electronics and I was afraid of electrocuting myself, but the blonde woman behind the counter suggested electrical tape (duh, why didn't I think of that) and basically saved the day. But that's not all! I needed to get the receipt for this transaction today - a month later - since I used a work credit card. Lee answered the phone and was unbelievably patient and helpful. My email address was being weird so it took about 20 minutes to figure everything out, but Lee didn't complain a bit and truly went above and beyond to make sure I had everything I needed. Brownies is a Nob Hill institution. Growing up in Nob Hill, Brownies was the only hardware store in the neighborhood. Everyone in the store is super friendly and helpful. They are willing to give you advice, direct you to products that are a lower price alternative and serve your needs above their own. Recently my bedside lamp had a problem with the switch. I went into Brownies to consult a clerk on what to do. A very nice young man took the time to splay the wiring on my electrical cord, try a replacement switch and use one of their own lightbulbs to test it. An older woman took over and made sure the metal prongs were touching the electrical node. Talk about team work. The lamp worked! And they didn't charge me for the work. This is a family business, albeit maybe a "modern" family of multi-diverse Dads, Moms, uncles or aunts twice removed. Forget the chains that have popped up nearby. Go to a local business where the people are friendly and really nice! read more

This place has a serious attitude problem. Most of the employees are very unhelpful, bordering on hostile. They either seem to assume you're there to shoplift if you don't know exactly what you are looking for, or when you ask them for help or questions they seem very put out. I'm pretty above average in my knowledge of hardware stock but they treat you like you're some kind of idiot or criminal if you don't have a precise idea of what you're looking for. VERY unpleasant experience and i am done cutting them Covid slack since it has happened several times to me there. I go out of the way to not shop there now even though it's just a couple blocks from my apartment. I also know local friends who share my opinion. I'm going to encourage them to write reviews because there is NO WAY they deserve four stars.. read more

As another Yelper below said what is wrong with the customer service at this business? Sunday August 4th 5:50pm I shopped for gold spray paint the blonde Hispanic lady came over with a paranoid vibe and instead of helping me get the lower priced item as I expressly said I wanted when I got up to the register and it was rang up it was the more expensive spray paint. So the young guy with curly hair had to get the African-American male to override the sale as I exchanged for lower-priced gold spray paint. The young guy is promising he needs to have more enthusiasm. Too languid for his youth. The AA guy said unnecessarily "usually we don't do returns on spray paint" -dude, eye-roll because I had not left the store so that policy is moot. He was just being a jerk and was busy flirting & being all sparkly-friendly with another customer anyway. I asked the young guy was the AA guy the manager he said no. I'm tired of giving Brownies the opportunity to give me inconsistent customer service I'll be taking a sabbatical from shopping there. You're not the only hardware store in town you know. I've been going to Brownies long enough to remember when it was on the east side of Polk, with a huge neon sign. The neighborhood was a dump, but Brownies was the place to go for everything---and the few things you couldn't find would be waiting for you at Cliffs Variety. There was a brief period, perhaps a decade ago, when it seemed that Cliffs was scaling back, and Brownies began to get the stuff Cliffs had, so going up to the Castro pretty much meant going to see a movie. And then, about a year or two ago, something began to happen at Brownies. It changed owners or something. Long time employees who might not have had shining social skills but knew where everything was, and how to best utilize what they had, disappeared, replaced by what seems like minimum wage workers. Stuff changed places. Then changed again. And again. And then, for the first time ever, they didn't have this. Or they were out of that. Or they only carried three of something you needed four of... Yesterday the paint machine was broken. Today I called to ask if it was working. "Oh jes, eets working" "The paint machine is working" "Jes eet is working". It wasn't. Went all the way up there on foot, and it wasn't working. There are more infuriating things than people who say yes when they should say "Let me ask someone, please hold" but I don't want to talk about Him anymore; not right now. It's one thing when you go into Corporate Coffee and the service is even slower than it was the last time you went in, months ago, as Corporate Coffee tries to pretend it's a Mom and Pop artisan coffee house, making one coffee at a time. Hardware stores are where you go for projects. You rush in after work to get something so you can start the next morning. You go in early to get something so you'll have the rest of the day to do it. And when you're trying to use yellow paint---and you think you've FINALLY found a shade that is the one you want---to have the paint machine break? I've never had a hardware store where the paint machine was broken, never. No excuses. So Brownies isn't Brownies anymore. The neighborhood is so much nicer, it has an energy it hasn't had since gay bars lined both sides of the street from Post to Broadway---DECADES ago. But there are other hardware stores, on California and further up Polk so it looks like I'll be walking past Brownies in the future. I don't know what is worse, seeing a long time business go bust ( or get forced out by soft story seismic rehab) or to watch an institution lose its way like a senile old friend who can't remember to bathe. read more

What a great hardware store! I had to replace a fuse and I'd heard this particular type of fuse is hard to find, so I called ahead and spoke with Spencer, who assured me they did carry it. Jetted over on my Lyft share (that's another 5 star review) and as soon as I entered the store, Spencer came up to greet me. As soon as he saw Cozy the doggy treats came out, and I thought that was so nice So did Cozy! Spencer walked me over to the fuses and found exactly what I was looking for, well I didn't really know so I bought a bunch which hopefully I will never have to use. But I have them if need be and more important, he answered every question I had about the product. If you've ever been left to find what you needed and figure it out for yourself, you know what a pleasant change this was! I was just lucky in all aspects of this fuse dilemma because when I got home, the very first fuse I tried was the one I needed! But enough about me! I went into Brownies to purchase a 72" window shade.I proceeded downstairs.There was an employee doing inventory 5 feet away.This employee never once offers to assist me.After trying to decipher their price list I grabbed a 72" vinyl eggshell colored window shade($54-/+) and brought it to the counter.The clerk is unable to ring up the shade.So I went back downstairs and looked for an item number.The item number I gave the clerk still didn't ring up.Now the employee downstairs communicates through an earpiece to the clerk that the shade I have is 123.00(wrong).The shade I have is vinyl not the 123.00 cloth.The clerk also asks the very unhelpful guy in the basement the item quantity?I have one window shade that's supposed to be around 54.00.At this point I'm going to give up trying to complete this purchase.I took the shade downstairs and put it back precisely where I pulled it from.Now the unhelpful employee(Lee) in the basement tells me "That's not where that goes."I could not get out of Brownies quick enough..Do not plan on going back.. read more

I always knew cleaning was a worthless task. Things just get messy again, and besides that things break. OK, maybe it's more that I break things, but whatever. And so it went--Brita pitcher, flying through the air; Brita pitcher, lying on the floor; Brita pitcher, working nevermore. "Noooooo," I gasped, "noooo...Curse you cleaning, CURSE YOU!" Dejected over my recent loss, I went to Brownie's for a worthy replacement, and I left that day without buying a single thing. For that, they get *F*I*V*E* fabulous stars! I'll explain: These people are the antithesis of the scummy car salesman. There I was, all set with shiny new Brita in hand, going to checkout. Suddenly, the employee who helped me get it off the shelf (yeah, yeah, I'm short, but it was at the very TOP) called out, "Wait, let me see that." He continued, "I probably shouldn't be telling you this, but you can get one for ten bucks less at the place down the street." I stared at him, blinking for a moment. I didn't understand. Was he helping me save money by directing me to another store? Did I just have a Progressive Insurance moment? Yes folks, I did. And for that, I can say Brownie's is the best pal a gal could ever have: honest, trustworthy, and reliable. There's a reason this place has been in business for over a 100 years. Came in and waited to get keys cut but didn't mind because of the regulations. Got my key cut I brought in a special key used for my car they cut it and it did not fit wasted my time and money on the key and didn't even get a refund for the key I bought I would recommend going across the street to get keys cut to key me locksmith! read more

I didn't learn a damn thing from Tim the Toolman Taylor. I thought my years of watching Home Improvement would've taught me some basics, but after scrounging my mind on some home repair issues, I realized that I basically filled my head with a lot of " Ar Ar ARRRR!" LUCKILY, the 'mom' of Brownies helped me out. (Lets just say her knowledge of home repair was Impressive) I was able to grab some fixtures, bolts and was able to completely remodel my entire apt in a few hours. Yup, just like that. Put down new Nicaraguan wood floors, Italian Granite for my kitchen, and was able to add a nice cedar wrap around deck to my 20 sq foot Bachelor Pad. Exactly. Tim, you suck. I like Brownie's just fine, and I'm there often enough. The staff is really helpful, and they pack a decent selection into a pretty small store. And when I had to return a pack of pigeon spear strips (which I was using for their anti-hobo properties, not their anti-pigeon properties), they did it with no problems at all. My one gripe with Brownie's is that they close early on weekends. Early as in 6 p.m. Brownie's clearly knows that's too early, because during the week they don't close until 7. Any sharp retailer should also know that people do more shopping on weekends, thus it makes no sense whatsoever to close EARLIER on weekends than on weekdays. C'mon, Brownie's, do the right thing: stay open and let me shop here on my way to tasty Indian food a little further down the block. Don't be a hater. read more

Brownie's is the local hardware store that has almost everything from space heaters to vacuum bags to fast passes. If they don't have something, they will suggest another place. Extremely helpful and attentive. You can tell some of the employees have been there forever, which I love. Makes it like the 5 and 10 cent store. They even validate parking. This place gives amazing customer service. Our sink is clogged and I accidentally bought the wrong tool. Refunds or exchanges are not allowed for tools, which is normal, but they immediately offered to exchange it for the right tool to help me get the job done. This is the kind of hardware store that deceptively has everything. Like you expect it shouldn't have something ('cos its small/cozy) but it has 10+ like it to choose from! Initially, I only picked up some small household fixer-upper items when moved into my apt. But recently, I was in here to get lots of rolls of packaging tape and I stumbled across their spray paint cabinet. I was blown away! They have a bigger selection than any of the paint/art stores I've been to (aka House of Color & The Art Store). They even had highly luminescent and camouflage spray paints!! You'd think that being the daughter of a general contractor/all around handy man would mean that I have tools and mad tool-using skillz. Uhhh, no. Unfortunately, I'm one of *those* girls. No tools. Not handy but kids herself that she is. Lucky for me, I have a super handy BF. Even luckier, I have a super handy BF who values the benefits of a good shower -- and despises my crappy, sprays-water-everywhere-but-your-head, janky-ass shower head. So he got me one that feels like heavy rain... and is a little slice of heaven. Unfortunately, the combination of brute strength and no tools equaled a small problem with the installation. A problem in serious need of fixing, pronto! That's when we headed out to Brownie's. I mean, why not? They have lots of tools, right? We'd get a wrench and voila! The problem would be solved and happy showers would ensue! Then I had a sort of potentially hair-brained idea. Why not see if Brownie's would help a fix-it-challenged girl without investing in a tool I'd never use again? I mean, who wouldn't believe my poor at plumbing-damsel-in-distress story? I *am* blonde AND a *girl* after all. Certainly not Brownie's! I mean, from what I remembered Brownie's had the nicest staff in town... and lots of tools at their disposal. It was certainly worth a shot. Sure enough, I was right. The friendly and capable staff came to my rescue, pulled out their tools, and fixed my shower thingy! The most amazing thing of all: They didn't try to sell me one thing. (a fact the BF pointed out to me) Not that I'm at all surprised. Brownie's epitomizes the neighborhood hardware store. Friendly, knowledgeable staff who are prepared to help their customers tackle any job no matter how great or small. Ok, done. I ordered a faucet through acehardware.com and chose the deliver to my store option, which was Brownies. It took over a week to arrive (not Brownie's fault) but by then I didn't need it so I went in and told them to go ahead and return it. What WAS Brownie's fault was that Mr. C went in to try to get another one and they essentially wouldn't sell it to him because he told them we ordered another one online. So, we got a zipcar and went to Lowe's. I get a call a day after I asked them to send it back letting me know they wouldn't be crediting my account, but issuing a store credit. Oh, HELL no. Brownie's doesn't have a dog in this hunt, that transaction was between me and acehardware.com. I called their customer support and asked for the credit to be processed to my credit card. I don't know what is going on over there, but they lost ANOTHER star for me. It seems like every time I go in there they are just trying to be the hardware store equivalent of Whole Foods. I've probably been to Brownie's a little over a handful of times in the past month and every single visit was a success! Brownie's = da bomb. The staff members are extremely friendly and I can't get over it every time I come here. I've come to this neighborhood hardware store for so many things over the past few years - key copies, drain decloggers, cleaning supplies, mason jars (shout-out to how cheap they are here), window screens, and so much more. I am definitely one of those people who doesn't like to ask for help when I go to a store but at Brownie's I feel the complete opposite. Every experience has been awesome and I've even gotten around to chatting with the employees about the neighborhood. I hope so much that people continue to support it. I really wasn't expecting to be wowed but I had such a great experience that I totally get why people love it here. I just needed a fridge bulb. Not hard, right? Well, I'm a terrible shopper and I stood in an aisle looking at the bulb after bulb before going up to the cashier and asking if it mattered what kind of bulb I used. She called someone to assist me and he was there in seconds. I showed him the bulb I had and he walked me over to the appliance bulbs. I felt in good hands as he explained the differences between the three that would work as excellent replacements. Seriously great service for a $3 item. I've since returned for additional items, with that same super friendly and helpful service each time. Love it! read more

Ok, so have you ever gone to use your debit card and then totally blanked on your pin? Well, this happened to me on Sunday. The clerk behind the register was super easy going about it and after two failed attempts to remember it, he reached under the counter and brought out this bucket of hard candy. He suggested I eat the coffee one and that "they say sugar helps with memory." I ate it, still couldn't remember my pin, so we rang it up as credit. Sweet though, right? This small corner Russian Hill Hardware store has little bit of everything, including the "kitchen-sink" (ha-ha). This store also scares the beejeebees out of Matt. Everytime Matt walks down the narrow aisle, fragile merchandises on the shelf rattles and a liable accident is in the wait. This is definitely not the type of place you wanna kill time or meet a friend. Just get your shit and quickly get the heck out of there. Matt needed a Mr. Coffee carafe for his coffee-maker and a couple of odds and ends items from this place. Matt was still in his uniform, and have his bulky equipment attached to his belt. The aisle are so narrow, that Matt's baton knocks merchandises off the shelf, in result, ruining the displays. Luckily none of the items were delicate items. The friendly and experienced staff assisted Matt and got what he needs and got Matt out of there very quickly. read more

I love going into this old hardware store, not only am I surprised every time they have something I need, but it is always in stock. Am I the only one that gets the random stuff that no one ever carries in their store besides Brownies? Never fails, the other day I went in to get a mini halogen light bulb, I couldn't find it even on-line. But yes they had it and the friendly people that work there helped me find it. A quick shout out to the neighborhood hardware store! Cliff's Variety is the KING of San Francisco hardware stores. BUT, if you live near Polk Gulch, you'll see how Brownie's swings well above its weight. How could you ever go to Home Depot after visiting these two joints?! Brownie's secret - which if you read the reviews, is no secret - is its staff. I have never met a more helpful group of people. They seem to be sorted into two categories: 1- the "kids" who work the cash register, but who seem to be learning the basics; and 2- the grizzled "old timers" who have worked here since the store was opened in 1913 (I made that last part up). But the "old timers" are SO helpful and seem to have a solution for everything. Two recent encounters... Last year, mice - cute little ones, not scary - had discovered our apartment building. The landlord was placing traps and poisons, but I wanted to place a couple more. I shared this with one of the employees, and he walked me through the most effective traps, AND which were most humane. Sadly, I had no considered the humane aspect. Nice that he did. And recently, I needed to rewire an old lamp that had been sitting in my storage unit for literally 20 years. I brought the lamp in, looking for the bits I'd need to fix the lamp. Well, the woman working there took the lamp from me, walked around the store finding this wiring, this washer, this switch - then over 10 minutes, she rewires the lamp for me, rings up the bits at the register, and says, "That will be $8." WTF! Thanks, lady! Anyway, this place is small, but if you have basic hardware needs, need cleaning supplies, need some keys made, need some GOOD SERVICE, this is the place for you. read more

So, it's been some time and I got word that things have drastically changed. They are under new management and I must say - she is doing an AWESOME job! The young lady I spoke of in my previous review is the one I'm talking about - they'd be foolish to let her go! The place has done a 180 and all thanks to her! She has gone out of her way to make me feel comfortable shopping there once more which is good, we're back to remodeling our apartment...... Again! Much of the troubled staff is now gone, YAY! and the staff that has replaced them is uber kewl! Chuck is a hoot at the counter, she's super friendly and knowledgeable and it's nice knowing you can speak freely around her. The other gal is super kewl, too though often racing around the store - working I'm sure :-) I'm very happy with the changes that have taken place, if anyone has any issues then talk to Tara and she'll take care of it. read more

Good ol' Brownies. I love the baked goods more, but this store is a good alternative. This is where I buy my Muni pass each month. And I can't be any more grateful for the fact that I can purchase them so close to my apt. I used to have to journey across the city for them, even waiting at the Powell St. station once or twice in more desperate times. I'm so ashamed. And I'm also so curious as to why so many people wait in line there when they can get on those cable cars two or three blocks up the street, without the line. But back to Brownies, where my passes are purchased from the very nice clerks. Service. Service. Service. Service. When you move into a new place in the city, you are constantly buying little things here and there on a daily basis for a while. My roommate and I went in here in search of a few random things for our apt and walked out happy customers. The two men that helped us were SO friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable. They offered advice on how to improve our old showerhead and how to fix my roomie's ugly bedroom lighting situation (lets just say the light was stuck in the 1980's). Awesome customer service! From the guys stocking to the cashiers to the floor help, everyone is great here! The last time I was here, I wandered in looking to paint my ceiling, I know absolutely nothing about home improvement. I was going to get the paint that had already been used on it (a semi-gloss) but the staff member suggested that I use a flat paint as it really helped to hide imperfections. I got the paint, he threw in a paint can opener and stirrer and I was on my way after being helped by the friendly cashier. He was SO RIGHT. My ceiling looks so much better in flat versus the semi-gloss, all of the many imperfections were hidden! Well stocked store that makes keys, has paint and anything and everything you could ever need from pots and pans to lighting. If you're used to the crappy service you get at home improvement stores, prepare to be pleasantly shocked by the terrific and helpful customer service here! read more

As a hardware store junkie (don't let the high heels fool you) I've been a bit let down here in San Francisco. I used to live near an enormous Lowe's, and could spend hours wandering the aisles, surrounded by the friendly twinkle of steel, the warm smell of freshly cut lumber. There is no such wonderland within easy reach of my SF apartment. Brownie's is almost as good. Hands down, the best place to buy electrical wiring and light bulbs in San Francisco. Here's why: When I first moved into my new apartment, I went out to explore the nearby shops. Upon entering Brownie's, I was asked by an older gentleman if I needed help. When I told him I'd just moved in, he gave me a tour of the store. Honest. A tour. Who does that? That's how helpful and kind the employees here are. You can also rent tools here, which I have promised myself I will do soon. I just have to figure out what to build. read more

Wow, the service here is everything you could want in a hardware store--friendly, knowledgeable, cost-effective and efficient. I came in here to make a copy of my key after a particularly disastrous lockout, and it took less than five minutes to get in line, get my keys cut and pay for them. For less than $10, I bought a new key copy, a lanyard and an ID tag for my key. (Yes, I am super paranoid now after losing my keys.) As the cherry on top, my zipper tag fell off of my backpack while I was setting up my keys, and one of the kindly gentlemen at the store proactively noticed me, offered to help and fixed the tag in 10 seconds. Man, I love this place! I may even go here just for fun to cheer up my day. read more

One thing that big box shops like Home Depot have an impossible time emulating is that neighborhood corner store/ family run/ all smiles destination. This place embodies that one thing. The people who work here are extremely friendly. People walk down the aisles asking if there's anything they can help you with. There are always two people at the front counter waiting to check you out. The employee to customer ratio is seemingly very low. They will take the time to answer your question. They will offer up additional information that may impact your experience there. Case in point - This morning we go get some keys made. We like the shiny cute keys in the front, you know the ones that have patterns etc. We end up choosing an Oakland A's key and a SF 49ers key. One of my friends mentioned Brownie's to me, and said that it was very "neighborhoody." I was a little perplexed, but nonetheless I made my way over to the hardware store to buy a few basic things (hammer, screwdriver, etc). After my visit, I don't think he could have used a better made-up adjective to describe the place. A lot of the staff are very friendly and helpful. One cashier in particular has always been a happy-go-lucky guy in an endearing way. However, some of the prices are a little outrageous for me. Even though I can understand why they would mark-up items a little bit more, it wasn't really worthwhile to me to buy a microwave there ($1 for every 1 watt? Really?) Other than that little price gripe, I highly recommend the place for all hardware and random do-it-yourself job needs. read more

This hardware store rocks. I've been here at least 3 times since I've moved into my new apartment. Paint, extension cords, tarps, painting supplies--they've had everything I need. Plus power drill rentals at $5/day. Awesomeness! I have officially found my hardware store. read more
