Now you've done it. You've either gotten yourself lost or you've found yourself in the middle of BFE. You couldn't stop to ask directions. Don't shout because no one can hear your screams anyway. You might as well have a meal. The service is of the friendly small town variety but makes you wonder if the locals are a little bit "off." The dude that was mopping the floors went around to the kitchen to cook our meal. The food is of the "greasy spoon diner" variety. At least the food is cheap and there's plenty of it. Old time Hollywood pictures adorn the walls, which gives you plenty to look at but leaves you wondering what the connection is. We're nowhere near Hollywood. It's clean and well maintained, but the decor doesn't fit the location. read more

Brownie's was basically the only place open in Brawley on Memorial Day when my friend and I swung through, but it ended up being a great and what I would call pretty local stop! Brownie's is a pretty typical diner but I say above-average for the location! My friend and I had lunch here and I had what I think may have been one of the best grilled chicken sandwiches I've had in a long time. My friend had a taco salad which she though just average, so I say stick to the burgers, sandwiches, etc. and you'll be set. The waitresses were friendly and prompt to refill waters and sodas which we always like. The diner is decorated with a number of retro items and was pretty full on a very quiet, very hot Monday afternoon, so people around here obviously like it. Follow the crowd, as they say! read more

I picked Brownies Restaurant from YELP as I was traveling up to Niland to see Salvation Mountain. I had a Burrito which was tasty but pretty standard fare as measured against other Mexican restaurants. I was alone so it was a very simple order. After my burrito was served, that was the last time I saw my server and at a time when the restaurant was not busy. I had to ask the person cleaning tables for a drink refill and then a few minutes later, I had to ask her if she would please get my check. I recall seeing my absent server at the cash register as I was leaving the diner. I thought Brownies looked clean, the inside was decorated nicely and it was well lit at most eating areas. The staff seemed friendly but I noticed a lack of service at both booths right next to me. One surprise was how low the seat was relative to my booth table. I am 6' 2" and the edge of the table was at about the middle of my chest. Honestly, it was very strange and made it difficult to eat and read a paper. I wonder if a small person has to ask for a phone book. This must have been like this for years. All-in-all, it sure beat a McDonald's or other chain food places and was a nice place to relax for a few minutes. read more

Even though these guys seem to have some connection to the steak-place-that-must-not-be-named in Westmorland where we had a veritable Kitchen Disaster-grade un-dining experience the other evening, I can honestly say Brownie's is the best food option in the Brawley area ... by far. The prices aren't low, and the servings aren't big. But everything we tried was good, and no one got sick afterwards. The service wasn't great either, but it happened eventually. Walking into Brownie's is like stepping into a time warp. There is a very 1950's diner feel to the atmosphere, which extends to the decor. Its very cute and quaint, with old-timey signs and celebrity pictures and various plaques adorning the walls. The food hearkens back to a simpler time as well. Very hearty, down home fare. This is diner food at its best. The menu isn't overly complicated, and what items are on there are sure to satisfy. They specialize in Mexican and American foods. Breakfast is, naturally, the best time to go to Brownie's, but if you feel like something different, they have dinner specials nightly and their burgers can't be beat! As has been mentioned, service is kind of hit or miss. All in all, this is a fantastic little place. You're sure to be satisfied after leaving Brownie's. It always makes me feel a little nostalgic, since the place and the food always reminds me of hanging out with my grandparents. If you're in the Brawley area, you could do a whole lot worse than Brownie's. read more

We hit Brownies perhaps 5 or 6 times a year when we go to Glamis. Most items on the menu seem out of a can then heated. Nothing fresh or scratch cooked any more. No inspiration nor anything on the menu that stands out. Like another Yelper mentioned, have your party's order figured out when your server returns with your drinks, because she'll never come back after that. You'll probably have to chase down your server for the check. Forget coffee or water re-fills, it will never happen. The entire town of Brawley shuts down tight at 8 pm, but comes alive screamin' promptly at 4 AM as are Brownies hours. Tips appreciated., as is your business though they will probably ignore you, or most certainly forget about you. You can count on that, always happens to us but still better than Dennys and on a par with IHOP. read more

I was not from the area. Ultimately this was the closest to a "dinner style breakfast" restaurant we could find. We went here because it had the most reviews in the whole town. I got their corn beef hash and two egg combo with diced potatoes a coffee and a small orange juice. The eggs and corn beef hash portions were small but flavorful. The diced potatoes were flavorless and seemed to take up most of the plate. The coffee was great. The orange juice tasted nothing like orange juice. It tasted very concentrated and almost stung when gulping. Price was affordable. But for the same price. You're better off just driving to the Ihop 15 minutes away in Calexico. read more

How many locals remember this was Kentucky Fried Chicken back in 70's. Any meal is outstanding at this place. Breakfast favorite is Pork Chops and Eggs, Lunch or Dinner favorite is Chicken Fried Steak. All specials are good and the Steaks are of Steakhouse quality. This is not a 5-Star due to the restrooms not being the cleanest at times. Service is great most of the times but there are times a server might be slow or unattentive. Most of the bad servers don't last long, though. The owners are friendly and are great contributors to the community. They treat their customers with great hospitality. read more

The prime rib is my favourite and the peach cobbler. Truly everything we've ever ordered has been delicious. There is always the sweetest waitress who helps us too. Been going here for years. When I go down to visit my parents take me here. My parents love this place, friends love it and visitors do too. It's definitely diner food. This place is not over the top just booths along the windows, and tables set up throughout the place. It's not the cutest place the decorating is a little off and random but hey that's ok because you don't expect anything too much from a family owned small town diner (or at least I don't) The menu doesnt have 100s of different choices it's pretty minimal and that's always a good thing when new customers stop in. Fried chicken hamburger steak roast beef and cheddar machaca plate chicken fried steak ranch dressing! (buttermilk) NY Steak those are some of my recommendations. The service is ok. I think if you stick with a more diner like order your results may be better. The green chili diner was good and the beans were creamy. The bad part was the rice wasn't warm and it was dry. Then the microwave me a side of rice that was warm but qualify unimpressive. The side salad lettuce in their salad mix was kinda browning but still crisp. Good service and I think if I ordered a burger or something it may have been a better experience. I would still come back here just pick better menu items. read more

WOW, a little local place in the middle of the afternoon and it had quite a few customers. Staff were great -- attentive and jovial. I ordered a Chimichanga and I can truly say it was the best I've had in years. Would highly recommend this place especially if you don't know where to eat in Brawley. I just want to thank Juanita (owner) and Tiana (our waitress) for the great service on my mom's 87th birthday party. The private dining area was the perfect size for this family gathering. This place was an absolute horrible experience . My girlfriend and our family came to the area for a birthday and wanted to try a few local bite the inside is dated but absolutely has character. Service was alright but the one star all has to do with quality, taste, and time it took for food to come out. It was quick yes but the quality of everything me and my family ordered was horrible. No one at our table finished thier plates and everything had the taste of either canned or frozen produce. During a recent trip to the Salton Sea, I passed through the small, rough-around-the-edges, desert town of Brawley and had dinner at Brownie's Diner. It seemed to be one of the better places to eat in a town that still retained a bit of that Old West patina, as well as the sort of dining options that go with it. It was cozy and kitschy, with tables and chairs that seemed as if they had been retrieved from the movie set of an old western, and photos of movie stars and other celebrities hung from nearly every wall. And any wall space not covered bu photographs is covered by gewgaws and knick-knacks. It's as if an Old Hollywood museum and your grandmother's favorite sitting room had gotten caught up in a tornado, then dumped within the confines of an old saloon. 5:30 in the evening must be a bit early for them, as they didn't seem to be expecting any guests. I stepped inside the restaurant and was basically ignored by the waitress at the counter and the bartender stationed towards the rear of the dining area. The lack of attention confused me, and made me think that they hadn't quite opened yet, so I asked the bartender where I should sit. "Sit anywhere you'd like," he said cheerfully. Eventually, I parked myself on a stool at the counter near the waitress, as it seemed as if this would get her attention. My strategy worked; eventually, she sashayed over with a menu and placed it before me, as she recited the list of specials for that evening. She then breezed off to the kitchen, and when she returned, I placed my order - the soup of the day, followed by their turkey dinner. The waitress soon brought out a cup of their soup of the day, a fairly simple pinto bean soup. It consisted of three ingredients only: a clear chicken broth that may or may not have been home-made, the pinto beans that may or may not have been canned, and some bacon. As simple as this soup was, it was tasty. Then again, anything with bacon in it was bound to be tasty, and it would have been nice if it had some chopped onions and celery in it, so it didn't seem quite so chuck-wagonish. The turkey dinner came out soon after I had finished the soup. The turkey was served on a thick but otherwise nondescript slice of bread, open-faced sandwich style, with a generous helping of brown gravy ladled over the top of it. The turkey had that savoriness, juiciness, and flavor that can only come from being freshly roasted, and the gravy had the flavor, texture, and consistency that can only come from being freshly prepared from fresh turkey drippings. However, the gravy was just a bit too salty for my taste. Accompanying the turkey were some carrots and broccoli, which had been boiled until they were just cooked through, then more or less dumped onto the plate, as if the chef were slinging hash for some barn animals. Joining these vegetables were some mashed potatoes that was literally about half butter. While I love butter in my mashed potatoes, in this case, it was too much of a good thing. The excess butter made the mashed potatoes really dense and rich and hard to eat. They might as well have given me a stick of butter to eat, and saved themselves the trouble of incorporating a little potato into it. All in all, I felt that my experience at Brownies Diner was a bit uneven, a bit rough-and-tumble, much like the desert town in which it is located. Its ambience had its folksy charm, but its service was a little off at the beginning, and its simple country fare was a bit rough around the edges. If you're into basic comfort food in a kitschy country-western setting, then Brownie's Diner is the perfect spot for you. As this isn't quite my thing, I'm giving Brownie's Diner a 3/5 star rating. read more
