Excellent savoury sandwiches: the curried chicken was especially tasty. Sweets are good, but not exceptional. Scones were not as buttery and crumbly as one might hope. The blanc de blancs 100% Chardonnay vintage Champagne was light, crisp, and refreshing, and served at the perfect temperature. Live piano music was a pleasant touch, if a wee bit loud for the somewhat confined space of the tea room. Service was friendly and unobtrusive, but slow and a bit lacking in attention (our request for a new pot of tea was repeated twice before it was fulfilled). You needn't dress up too much, but respect for the occasion and establishment is reflected in the attire; jeans would be out of place here. read more

Came for afternoon tea. Service was strange and our table (for 4) was really small so they couldn't leave teapots so we had to continually ask for refills on tea. Also, you don't get an individual serving, they bring out one tray for the entire party and then you can get refills of anything upon request. I'd rather have them bring out individual tea pots and sandwiches per person (like most others do). it was strange. Normally, we do tea at the Ritz in the US and definitely wouldn't come back here. Hard to understand the accents of the servers (not British) and the tea/food overall was average and wasn't worth the price. Scones are really small and not what we expected. read more

It's always a toss-up between The Ritz and Brown's for tea, but I think when it comes to the subtle elegance that only dark wood and a fireplace can give, Brown's wins hands-down. So keep in mind, if you want to a more grandiose experience (which I admit, I sometimes do), then The Ritz will be more suited for you (if you can only do just one). Otherwise, the hominess of Brown's is perfectly tasteful and charming, as it should be. From the décor to the staff, nothing is missed. I arrived early from Paris on the Eurostar and gunned it to Brown's for afternoon tea. It is something not to be missed...great tea, amazing food (some of the best scones and clotted cream that I've had, as well as some miniature-desserts that are all so amazingly good). My boyfriend ordered the healthier version of afternoon tea, so we had two trays out at the same time which was nice. Did I forget to mention it's all replenished numerous times? The prices aren't very expensive to begin with, and with the constant refills on the tea and food, you'll leave not wanting to eat for the rest of the day. I personally recommend a walk to Picadilly Circus afterwards to walk off everything you've just eaten. read more

I have been here a few times once for tea in the English Tea Room which is fantastic and a couple times to the bar which is a bit stuffy but in a good way. The Guest rooms are clean and spacious. We asked for an upgrade and moved into our room with a small surcharge....Staff is very polite and professional. The only thing I was surprised about is the lack of WIFI...they have internet but you have to plug your laptop in, however we complained and they set up a wireless router in the room and it was all good... TERRIBLE!! I was SORELY disappointed, as I went this week based on these and Chowhound's recommendations. It was very disappointing! The service was crap, the servers were running around like chickens with their heads cut off, we had to ask for water (cold and hot) refills repeatedly, they left dirty dishes and glasses for a long time before we had to request moving them, it took them 25 minutes to get us a check, after we asked 3 different people. The food: the egg salad bland and flavorless, the curry chicken was gross, the cucumbers in the cucumber sandwiches were rubbery, not fresh. The only redeeming thing to eat was the scones, with clotted cream and jam, so basically we paid 40 pounds ($75) for 3 scones with cream and jam. The atmosphere was lovely, the piano player amazing, but is it too much to ask to have at least ONE British person serving the traditional British tea for this non-local? VERY DISAPPOINTING. Coming to London with a kid - this is the place to be in terms of great service. Coming for business or as a couple, I would highly recommend this hotel. Service and staff are very good - rooms are spacious - much more spacious than most London hotels. The sandwiches, scones, cakes, tea and champagne were all superb but it was the service that was unsurpassed. Only the most intensive training can inculcate such service. This is a 5 star hotel and feels like one too. The service is excellent, the staff are all very polite, well spoken and efficient. The place is spotless with nice little touches like brand new soaps in the bar bathrooms etc. There are also nice little perks for kids- the staff leave out presents on the beds if they know children are staying. Fabulous location for afternoon tea! The afternoon tea offered here is one of the less well-known ones, but that just makes it easier to get a table. Comfy sofas in a beautifully decorated room, the murmu of conversation and a beautifully laid out afternoon tea - mmm The regulation sandwiches (ask for the veggie selection if you don't want salmon) are delicious and impeccably made; the scones are warm, crunchy on the outside, soft and cloudy on the inside; and the vast selection of cakes is to die for! The problem comes in choosing which to go for, and in which order, oh decisions, decisions. Make sure you don't eat lunch before you come here, and you probably won't want dinner until very late either! Sadly, Brown's Afternoon Tea did not live up to the hype today. I have been in the process of trying all of the 'famous' afternoon tea places in London and of the fancy locations, I would place this one towards the bottom. To be clear there is no fault with the actual tea and food itself. It was excellent quality. However, as examples the Wolseley is just as tasty and not as expensive while the Lanesborough has truly outstanding teas and impeccable service. The problem was the service was terrible - and really what you are paying for when spending £45 is service. Our server was surly. She seemed irritated that she had to serve us and was in a rush to get things moving, serving us food but waiting 10 mins to bring us our tea. While they were very generous with bringing us sandwiches, they would not bring us any more scones or pastries. The entire time was very rushed. They did not offer to bring us anything else - extra water for the tea, clotted cream (there was one cup shared amongst 4 people), etc. And then suddenly they just placed the bill on the table, which is fine in a place like the US but not in the UK. We actually wanted to order more but felt like the message was clear - give us your money and get out. I would like to add though that the piano music was really lovely. So, food and live piano music were excellent. To be fair, the entire experience seemed very odd. I do not understand how the place gets such lovely reviews, and then when we went, it was just really bad service. Maybe it was an off day? I would never go back to this place though. While the atmosphere and service are wonderful (especially the pianist), we were extremely disappointed by the gluten free pastries that were part of the fully gluten free tea. When friends come to town and want the tradition of Afternoon Tea, there is no better place then the Brown's Hotel tea room. I know there is lots of hype of tea at the Ritz or Claridge's, but really, for a true traditional afternoon tea experience there is no place more relaxing and more delicious then the Brown's Hotel. You are served in what feels like a country house's living room, very comfortable and served by an impeccable staff. Choose from a large selection of teas, and begin to much on the freshly made sandwiches. Then there is the matter of the scones, which I have never had any as light as the one's here. Finish off with a delightful plate of petit pastries, and if you still have room there are more cakes from the trolley. Finally, linger and relax. read more

As Americans, we are not as knowledgeable about tea as we are about coffee, so we were in for a nice surprise. Yonka, our server, was so helpful. And her enthusiasm for everything from the restaurant, to the food, to the tea was incomparable. She replenished our food with our favorites and made tea suggestions based on our preferences. I came here for tea to make a change from Claridges and whilst it was really delicious but just not as special an experience. There are a series of smallish interconnected rooms where people sit on sofas at low tables as waiters bring endless amounts of food until you beg them to stop. There is a pianist playing gentle muzak, pleasant if you're sitting at a safe distance, hellish if not. It's all very nice, smooth running and tasty, it just lacks the extra air of glamour to justify the high price. read more

Amazing tea selection and they catered specially to our vegetarian needs with all of the sandwiches. I wish we could get clotted cream in the US because it is so sinfully amazing. Oh my heavens!!! This place is the cats meow. They upgraded up because we used our Amex to an incredible suite with a library full of English classics. The bed was like sleeping in a cloud. The whites were crispy and fluffy. Then there was the tub which had a bath pillow, tv and heated towel rack. I took a bath a day just because the tub was so lovely. The complimentary toiletries were much better than what you'd expect even at a fine hotel. Turn down service came with house made chocolates and fancy eye cream on my pillow. We had a snack in the bar and ate breakfast there each morning. It was all delightful. They have house made jams and marmalades and the most welcoming and hospitable staff to boot. The hotel was classically charming and refined without being stuffy or pretentious. The door man wear a top hat and tails and made me feel like I was a queen. The location was walking distance to great restaurants and the train station and a Starbucks too!! It would be a pleasure to stay here again. read more

I've only been to Browns Hotel a handful of times for lunch and then a few more times in the afternoon in a mad dash to get out of typical English down pour while shopping in the area. On the whole I've been impressed though there was an undercooked fish dish incident once while dining with my Godmother please note it was all taken in very good humour and very quickly and efficiently rectified plus offer of more drinks on the house (which we declined) and I have never felt in the slightest way disappointment by the other occasion. The main dining room is really lovely. It feels open and grand without any fussiness of clutter. Service is quick and efficient with all waiting staff able to explain or advice on menu choices confidently. Even when the room has been busy we have felt in no rush to leave and they obviously allow for leisurely lunches in their booking times. I do usually book but have also just walked in and been seated with friends immediately (this may have just been luck). The menu has good options for light eaters as well as hearty, filling choices. I have often ended up in the bar after an afternoon in the West End, it seems no matter what cocktail I choose my friends always choose one I want more or maybe that just says something about the what you can't have you want argument! I think my favourite to date has been a Black Pearl (I'm pretty certain it was called that a delicious berry mixture of dark syrupy alcohol!)Be warned they are very generous with the bar nibbles and you can come away eating a weeks' worth of calories in assorted nuts and delicious savoury bites without even noticing until it's time for dinner and you realise you have no appetite! The bar has a cool, calm feel to it without feeling cold and the bar staff never let your glass remain empty or the snacks dry up! Between my friend and I we now have several umbrellas from the hotel as when finding out we did not need shelter from a storm to the nearest cab but rather to walk home they gave us them it's a very nice, old fashioned touch and much appreciated. Ive never seen the rooms so can't comment but assume from the rest of the hotel they are very good. If you are wheat or dairy intolerant note that I think I heard them say they can provide a cream tea without either which many places still don't do. Also a few of us got there before noon. We all checked in and sat in the bar until everything was set. When it was time to seat us they only came to get one group. Expensive, though very high class. Only really for the very rich, famous and nobility. Amazing quality though with some of the world's finest chef's. One of Rocco Forte's hotels. Rocco, the son of hotelier Charles Forte, spent time in all different roles at THF hotels in the 1970s and 1980s before reaching the top position as CEO. In 1996 Forte was taken over by Granada and asset stripped. Rocco bought it back in 2003. In 2013 Brown's celebrated its 175th Anniversary in Albemarle Street. read more
