There's a reason why I stopped going to Brug bakeries on island. I was craving some Asian bakery goods and couldn't get myself to Boulangerie or Don Quijote. Decided to stop by the Brug's at Kahala (it's in the little plaza area of businesses where McDonald's is at Kahala). The store itself is small but immaculate and true to the franchise image - sleek and chic which kind of lures customers into buying into these overpriced tiny breads (typically $3 a pop for their pastries). I was pretty impressed by their sanitation and covid measures. The breads looked shiny with all their white egg glaze and dark toasted colors. Went on a little tasting frenzy and bought their jumbo anpan breads (can never go wrong with anpan), a blueberry cream cheese Danish, their ube mochi bread, and nori cheese breads (Brug's take on pao de qeuijo). I'm glad I didn't go ham on buying more of these pastries because I was sorely disappointed. You typically can't go wrong with pastries - and I am a dessert fanatic here, so standards are pretty low lol. I was so very sad by the taste of everything. I had to scarf down the danish and nori cheese breads for lunch as I was driving for work on the westside yesterday. The cream cheese was NOT cream cheese but some sweet custard cream. I despise custard. I was trying my hardest to taste anything cheese-like inside it. The blueberries were fresh and not preserved which was a nice touch. The bread was more dense and chewy than I prefer. I then tried Brug's version of the pao de qeuijo (Brazilian cheese breads made of yuca root which is gluten free and chewy - love this stuff from Nosh). For a nice twist, I opted for the version with nori. Such a horrible horrible call. Have you ever tried spirulina? It's a superfood supplement I take for my health and it's algae. Not the sweet, savory taste of nori but more like muddy pond water seaweed taste. I don't know if it was because of the cheese combined with their nori flavoring but it tasted like I was eating pieces of spirulina bread. But it wasn't healthy bread because they made it out of mochi rice (not yuca) and it had cheese in it. It was perhaps the most unpalatable food I've eaten in years. I was tempted to throw it out but I was hungry and reluctant to waste food. It wasn't the best experience. I dropped off the anpans and ube mochi breads for my parents and managed to get a quick taste of each. The jumbo anpan had a good amount of sweet anko (smooth red bean) paste inside but the paste was overtly sweet and the bread itself was not worth the money. I can think of half a dozen places that have better anpan off the top of my head and does not cost me nearly $3 a piece. The ube mochi bread tasted like red yams (candied yams)..I mean red yam is close to ube...but it wasn't the best flavoring, and their mochi breads are a bit greasy flavored and not as soft or chewy. Maybe you have to heat it up? Overall, I haven't given out low stars in a long time. Don't believe in rating a place this low on average but as a franchise with 5 or 6 locations on Oahu alone, I kind of expect better. Maybe I'll stick to the curry croquettes and normal loaf breads that are tried and true. read more

Delicious raisin bread. Place an order ahead of time to reserve your loaf since they always sell out. With Covid concerns order 2 or 3 loaves at a time. Eat one and freeze up the rest. From the freezer or refrigerator just zap a slice in the microwave for 10 seconds and it's warm, soft and delicious. You can do that with all of their breads like their Toast bread (sliced white bread) perfect for higher end gourmet sandwiches. Convenient location next to McDonald's Kahala mall and plenty of free parking. Check out Brug on your next visit. read more

Stopped by Brug Kamala this morning. There are no bakeries in Hawaii Kai. They are open and enforcing Covid19 restrictions, Requiring masks, only 5 allowed in the store at one time. All Ala Carte pastry is individually wrapped and you must use gloves and tongs to pick what you like. Wonderful assortment starting with savory options and the progressing to sweet. Selected the Ham & Cheese, and a truffle & sea salt buns. Mango pastry, mochi doughnuts (chocolate, black sesame). All were very good. The black sesame mochi doughnut was remarkable, amazing unique flavor. The best surprise was in their fresh baked breads, I noticed the had French Baguettes for $3.50. The staff will get all the bread for you. The loaf was still warm. I tried it when I got home, it was fantastic. Crisp crust with a soft chewy center. Amazing flavor and light years better than the Whole Foods $6 loaf. I will be back for more. Give this place a try if you are in Kahuli. I noticed Brug Bakery originated at Ala Moana and expanded here in cozy Kahala Mall, next to the L&L Hawaiian Barbecue and Jersey Mike's Subs. I've always thought that Brug Bakery was a brand that was inspired by Saint Germain, the place we got awesome loaves of bread from Shirokiya Ala Moana in the 1990's and in the 2000's. With that said, I came here to Brug Bakery Kahala mall in search of dinner options that was something other than the usual fare that's presented at Kahala Mall. Over the years living on this side of the island, I love coming to Kahala mall, as it was the closest mall to home. With the arrival of Brug Bakery, it has expanded my options here in the last 2 years, especially with the renovations of McDonald's Kahala and the former Waialae Bowl, which has been torn down for the new strip mall of restaurants. On one of my few visits to this bakery here, it was basically a nice experience that was filled with typical fanfare that was nice and casual. The bakery was filled with assorted pastries and baked goods from Japan or inspired by Japanese cuisine. Either they make it here fresh or they're flown in frozen, which I don't know exactly. I should check sometime. Flying in frozen stuff sounds like supermarkets and not bakeries, but you never know! With that said, my most recent visit came on a Friday evening in March 2020. It was a quiet causal evening and it was nice. Everything looked relatively good. I picked out a few things after deciding on what was pretty good and decidedly not pricey. A lot of items are buidget friendly, especially when you just want something to quell your stomach for the night. The overall experience here at at Brug Bakery here at Kahala Mall was fun, festive, while being quiet and casual too. The customer service here was good. I was greeted with a warm hello and a nice smile. Wish there was more of that in today's digital society, but it is what it is. Brug Bakery, unlike most bakeries out there, it's self service for the most part. You can select your own delights and present it to the cashier to ring you up for your purchase. Most bakeries have their baked goods behind the counter and you tell them what you want. Not Brug! It's a twist on what was traditional and made it more modern, where the customer is in control of their own selections and purchasing power. I really enjoyed that! The store itself is relatively spotless and very much brand new, especially when it opened its doors at Kahala mall nearly a year or so ago. The decor is nice and is similar to the ambiance that the Ala Moana location provides and excels at its flagship store. Still, Brug's Kahala is unique in its own way, even when it's a bakery and it provides its own take on pastries and delights made for the working professional and kids alike. It's a bakery that knows what people like and it shows with their offerings. While donuts are a dime a dozen, you can find interesting options here for your stomach and your family and friends may find their hidden gems here as well. If you are in the area, consider coming to the Brug Bakery at Kahala Mall. If you are a pastry fan or want an alternative to traditional ice cream and other stuff, give Brug's a try! Brug's just may be the next best thing to your sugar craving fix! Brug's Kahala is located in the Kahala Mall, McDonald's wing of the shopping center. They accept major credit cards, as well as cash. If you are like me, the bus routes 1, 1L, 14, 22, 23, and 24 come through the Kahala Mall cooridor and stop off at various points around the Kahala mall complex. For the most part though, my time here at the Brug Bakery was nice and typical. It was nice to be able to pick and choose your items like a do it yourself candy store instead of having them do it for you. The customer service was nice and friendly. There was just one other person when I was there. I seemed to have an indecisive problem when it comes to so much deliciousness, but I settled on some good pastries that I resembled pizza rolls and other decadence when I went to a bakery in Irvine a couple of years ago. Most Asian bakeries nowadays have interesting creations now, versus the traditional donut shops. Consider coming to Brug Bakery Kahala mall, where inspiration and desserts mold and mesh into one. You can find your next favorite meal or guilty pleasure here. If you're in the area, head over to Brug Bakery and sample the next best thing since the donut. Always a favorite of mines when going to work, it's right next door to my dental office (convenient) , last time I went here , I've bought a mochi donut and a chocolate mochi donut for my coworker's birthday... the lady working there was kind to bring me the chocolate donuts as they weren't out on the shelf yet... they are great at keeping us safe and individually bagging their baked goodies . So nice to have a bakery treat without worries in an office setting. Transaction was quick and easy! I love the mochi donuts but I'd also highly recommend their sausage hot dog and their croquette . (Covid-19 Review) I've always been a fan of Brug Bakery ever since they first opened up in Ala Moana over five years ago. Because I was lucky enough to spend my childhood summers in Japan, I've grown up with authentic Japanese bakery shops and breads right around the corner and I definitely get the same feeling whenever I walk into Brug. What I Get: Loaf of Bread Recently Brug has become my new go to for my loaf of bread needs. I love how fresh and yummy their shokupans (white bread loafs) smell and when I'm really lucky and stop by right after they've just come out of the oven, the fresh bread fills my car ride home with an amazing smell of a freshly made hot loaf of bread. Car rides really cannot get any better than that! Also, when some of their breads don't sell out the day before, they resell their loafs the next day for 20% off. I'm no hater against day old bread so I always try to support them and myself by buying those first. Quality: 5/5 Their loafs of bread are so soft and tasty. This is the kind of bread that brings me back to Japan! I'm not surprised because their flour is directly imported from Hokkaido, Japan. I'm so happy that a place like this exists so I don't need to always fly back to Japan to get this. Price: 4/5 I wouldn't say their breads are cheap per say, but for what you get and the quality you get the price makes sense. Yesterday we bought 2 loafs of 9 count, day old bread which would have came out to around $16 in total but with the 20% each discount, it was a little more than $13. Not a steal, but I wouldn't consider this overpriced because the quality is that good. Parking: 5/5 This shop shares it's parking space with Jersey Mikes, ShareTea, and McDonalds (plus a few other shops). I never really struggled to find parking in this area! Covid-19 Info: Currently with Covid-19, they only allow 5 customers in the store at a time at the Kahala location. The Manoa location is even smaller so I think they only allow 2 customers at a time. oh man, Brug Bakery has the BEST PASTRIES and BREAD I've ever had!!! Reminds me so much of the bakeries I've been to in Japan. There wasn't one item that I didn't like. Everything is so fresh and so delicious. My #1 is the pastrami sandwich on the croissant (best when freshly made), and a close second is the mochi donuts (yum!!!). I love that you can just grab a tray and tongs, and pick and choose what you want.... I always hated when someone has to be behind the counter and you tell them what you want... I always felt rushed but you don't have to worry about that at Brug Bakery. Pastries come out hot and fresh throughout the day... when something new comes out, they usually yell out what is newly placed on their shelves. The only downside to the Kahala location is that they don't open before my work hours... I think they open at 8am daily... but its understandable... the people making the pastries already have to come in super early to bake, and to come in even earlier to open earlier is crazy! lol. I went to this location the other day to get my bread fix i got what i wanted and got in line to pay. It wasn't too crowded so not that long of a wait. At the registers they have this ipad for you to enter your phone number for their rewards program...so i entered my number as the girl rang up my items. Then i reached in my purse for a gift card i have i am not sure if i swiped it or if she did then she tells me because i paid with a gift card i will not get any reward points. Really? Why? I was waiting for this location to open for the longest time! Living in Kaimuki, this store is a quick drive compared to the other locations. It's located in the new complex next to L&L and Jersey Mike's. The food was amazing as usual and the soups were available next to the entrance. The store itself was very neat and cozy. The pastries were delicious and fresh! The staff was very enthusiastic and welcoming. When I was ready to check out, the woman saw I was waiting and helped me out instantly on an open register. I love everything about the Brug bakery since they first came to Hawaii in old Shirokiya building. Only one thing I don't get satisfied is store hours! Yes, it's a part of Kahala mall area, but it's a bakery, why they don't open earlier??? Opens at 8am that's too late for the residential area. This place is always awesome, but today, had a gentleman by the name of Collin who killed it! Had multiple changes in my sandwhich and didn't hesitate to get me from walking in the door, to my food in about 3 minutes. I really hope the management looks at these, because that guy deserves a raise and promotion immediately. If I could give zero stars, I would. Ordered an azuki taiyaki for two bucks.They said it would take 5 min but in reality, it took 15 min because they can only make one at a time. When I received it, it was the saddest looking Taiyaki I've ever seen. Compared to the one I bought in Japan for a buck, what an embarrassment and a rip off. To make things even worse, when I opened it up, there were THREE AZUKI BEANS. LITERALLY (see attached picture). I went back and got my refund. This rating is based on only one visit. I have been going to the two Ala Moana locations and the Manoa location for their products. I really like the bread and pastries, but I am usually displeased with the service (employees are generally indifferent at Ala Moana and outright rude at Manoa). I was very impressed that as soon as I walked in I was greeted by an employee. The same cashier answered several of my questions very clearly without taking too much time to complete my transaction. It also seems like there is more space in this location so they might not sell out of things as early as the Ala Moana stores. read more

This is now my new favorite bakery! I'm always craving pastries and bread, now I'm glad that there's a bakery close to home. The pastries and breads are not to sweet. I mostly came for the sweeter ones hehe. I came around 2 to 3ish pm and there was still a nice array of breads. Unlike other bakeries, where majority of the breads would be gone after 12. Since, this was my first time here, I tried to get one of each. I thought it was a pretty reasonable cost compared to the amount I bought. I bought about 12 pastries and the cost came out to $30~. Five stars for taste, quality, and for the service while taking precautions during COVID-19. They were definitely taking things very seriously. First, you need a mask to get in. After walking in, you use hand sanitizer. Before you can start picking out breads, you have to put on disposable gloves and also use tongs to get breads that you so desire. Beware: be early or you won't get what you want because things sell out fast each day! In other words, breads are placed fresh daily, so if it's sold out, you have to wait until they make more and set them out the next day. Parking here is plentiful but can be sparse during peak hours at lunch since the multiple venues in the plaza can get a lot of patrons too and they all share parking. There is additional parking nearby the Macy's that could be used as a last resort. Definitely a great place if you want breads and pastries you're used to enjoying in Japan, Korea, or Taiwan. We are hooked! We were so happy when Brug opened in Kahala! So many delicious savory or sweet things to choose from. Our favorites: monkey bread, fried musubi, pizzas. I've tried many different things and I can honestly say I've never been disappointed. Popular items sell out quickly so it's best to go early for the best selection. Selecting your "pastries" is self serve. All items are individually bagged. At the entrance there are trays to put your items on and tongs or gloves for grabbing. There is also a variety of breads. Great place for picking up a quick lunch or something for dessert. The parking lot is shared with McDonald's and other businesses. I've found that parking at the McDonald's end and walking is best. Parking is narrow and the driving area is tight at the Brug end of the lot. Staff is primarily there to cashier and stock items into the displays but they are helpful if you have questions.
