Inspired by the stellar reviews, I took a bridesmaid dress to Brunhilde to be hemmed. On my first visit she was quirky and pleasant. I was shocked though when she handed me the bill: $55 to shorten a $70 dress! She'd mentioned wanting to mess with the zipper a bit, so I figured I was getting a more comprehensive alteration and hoped for the best. Not sure if she was in a bad mood when I went in the next week to pick it up or what, but the encounter was bizarre. After initially telling me she didn't have my dress (wtf?!), then asking if I'm colorblind it was clear she just wanted to get my money and get me out. I asked to try on the dress and she let me slip it on in her bathroom. The hem looks pretty good, but she didn't do anything with the zipper at all. I feel like I got ripped off. read more

Summary: Brunhilde is a funny, charming woman who does seriously amazing work. Ask her about ballroom dancing and she'll dazzle you with stories while taking your measurements. Longer story: First time taking anything to a tailor (29 yr. old male...I know, should've done this sooner.) Definitely call beforehand to let her know you're coming -- she needs to let you in to her building and then you'll ride the tiny elevator up (don't let that deter you!) My fiance had 8 shirts, 2 suit jackets and 3 pants while I had a winter jacket. While she sizes you tell her how you want it to fit (tight on the sides, "I don't want it billowing out the back like a parachute" etc.) Recognize that things like zippers, drawstrings, buttons and the like can hamper alterations so be prepared to make a few decisions (for instance, I had to remove the drawstring around the waist of my winter jacket -- the string that keeps it snug -- but I was okay with that.) She's also pretty honest and will tell you if she can't magic your clothing problems away -- the suit jackets we brought in had fabric cut out of it originally to fit and so she couldn't let anything out. We picked up our stuff a month later, but it was ready within 1 week. Prices are reasonable and comparable to other tailors. read more

Brunhilde altered my wedding dress as well as another dress that had been gathering dust in my closet because of its bad fit. The wedding dress alterations were really high quality, she even hand-sewed 100 buttons onto the back of the dress. Her pricing is really reasonable, and I was very pleased with everything she did! Let me start by saying Brunhilde is a GEM! I needed a dress hemmed for an event in a week and a half. I called some places in the area and they all told me the dress could be altered in 2 weeks, but that could be negotiated depending on what I needed. Then, I called Brunhilde and she told me she could get it done in that timeframe, no problem. I went to see her on Thursday. When I walked in, she started with "So you want to be gorgeous?". Her personable demeanor made me feel so comfortable. She has many stories to tell and her sense of humor is such a catch that I wanted to stay even longer! After we decided how short I wanted the dress (she really knew her stuff and even gave me a few tips on how to walk while wearing it), we decided on a pick up date. I said I could come to get the dress next Saturday, but she said "How about this Saturday?". I was shocked that the alterations would only take 2 days because that is so rare to find that in this area! Her prices are also extremely reasonable. I came to pick up the dress this morning. I tried it on, and it felt even better than I had expected. I can now feel confident at my event and not be worried about falling or stepping on my dress! Overall, I am EXTREMELY pleased with Brunhilde. I would definitely bring your attire as early as you can just to be safe because I'm not sure what her typical caseload is like, but I was so happy to have my dress back within two days of bringing it to her. Brunhilde's professionalism and charming personality is unmatched. I feel so lucky to have found this business, and I will absolutely be back in the future. Brunhilde is amazing. I went to her a couple years ago to get my wedding dress hemmed and altered, and she did masterful work. My dress was a little complicated to hem because of a lot of lace, and she figured out a way to do it somehow, while still charging me WAY less than other quotes I got from tailors in downtown Boston. We did several fittings and she was very helpful with sizing and taking my opinions into account. I would trust her with anything! She also does pants for my husband now, and I'll be taking my sister's bridesmaid dress to her for alterations -- she just does awesome work, is so easy to get a hold of, and really knows her stuff. She does great work and is the best at keeping the same hem on jeans for only $15. I particularly enjoy her crazy commentary. She has no problem telling it like it is. I have also gone to her to fit me for bridesmaid dresses, suits, skirts, and pants and have never had a problem they've always fit perfectly. I went to Brunhilde because of the great reviews but after getting my dress back, the quality of work is not great. I agree with Mariah that Brunhilde's work seems okay on the outside but is unfinished and sloppy on the inside. I left my dress there for over 3 months and was very patient. I had plenty of time and didn't want to rush her. Travel there for many many fittings and a couple of times she said she would take this in but then when I come back for a fitting, it wasn't done or she doesn't remember to do it. I have alot of bead work on my dress and some of them are starting to fall out because the ends never got close properly. I also had to fix a few part myself since after taking a closer look at home, some parts near the bust area was not even and had a few buldges. My photographer thought I didn't get it altered yet until I told her I did and she said I need to go back to get it fix. She said if it was done right, it would be smooth on the side and front. The fabric should not be crinkle together like that at all. I don't even want to bother going back there to ask her to fix it again. It is too much of an inconvenience to go there. read more

Okay PEOPLE!!! If you are still unsure whether to take your jeans, coats, dress..... LOOK NO FURTHER! I took two dresses and my wedding gown to Brunhilde. Her skills are second to none, and she actually THINKS about how to do her best for you. I went for fit in for my wedding dress 3 times and every time, she made little more adjustments so that it would fit be beautifully --AND made everything reversible so that I could sell it in its original condition!!! Moreover, compared to what Kleinfelds quoted me, she did the job at a fraction of the cost. I mean really, if you go to Lapels or Kleinfields, or other large companies, they have a SET FEE for these alterations... how does that make any sense? Maybe you don't want a bustle, maybe you're 5'', maybe you're skinny, or maybe you're plump... different amt of work goes into tailoring the dress for each person!!! Brunhilde is fair-priced, super talented, AND also a joy to work with! As long as I live in Boson, I will take all my tailoring job to her! :) Highest recommendation! read more

Living in the Fenway area and tried to find a great tailor service. Turned out the amazing reviews are probably fake or just lucky. It's in a residence and it's unclear which unit she is in. I called to find out the details and got yelled (cuz I don't understand her accent at first) Then, when I got to the fifth floor, and tried to confirm the unit number again, I heard a woman in her unit saying, "oh my god, how stupid can she be."it doesn't matter how "good" she can possibly be, it was really a bad or even the worst experience. I'm not sure what happened to her today. It's just demeaning, racist and a SHAME. ITS NOT OKAY TO TREAT A CUSTOMER OR EVEN A STRANGER LIKE THIS. I was being nice and just asked questions... I took my wedding dress here thinking it didn't need much done as it fit rather well. Brunhilde took the fit from pretty good to spectacular in three visits and also created a beautiful bustle. She's pleasant, flexible, and her prices are extremely reasonable. Two years ago, I found myself in a downward spiral of worry about an upcoming kidney donation surgery, so I started frantically cleaning my apartment as a distraction. I found an old bag of clothes that needed to be tailored, shoved in the corner of my closet. I opened Yelp to find someone nearby. Enter Brunhilde. As soon as I walked in her door and started pulling out clothes to explain what needed to be done, she cut me off. "Honey, what's wrong?" Thus began a long and wonderful conversation wherein Brunhilde, an absolute stranger, offered me the comfort and reassurance I so desperately needed. I have since visited Brunhilde for several projects, not only because she's a sartorial genius but because her special brand of no-nonsense humor always makes my day. (If you're not ready to talk about how "your girls" look in a low-cut dress, she's not for you--and maybe you're not for anybody, ha.) I simply cannot recommend this woman enough. I took it to a dressmaker in Brookline and a bridal shop in Medford and both places nearly imploded with the amount of work that would have to be done to make it look right....and even then, it wouldn't look right. All this for the crazy insane price of $150!! Yeah. Right. So as I quietly start to freak out, I saw a review for Brunhilde on Yelp, thanks to Marcell S. and gave her a ring. She told me to come over to her apartment in the Fenway. When Brunhilde saw the dress on me, and heard my crazy tales of woe from the other seamstresses I went to, she laughed....and lauged....and laughed. "What are they, stupid??" she said. Ah, this was going to be good. Long story short, she made my dress look amazing on me and charged only $55!! She is truely a hidden gem. Also, don't be alarmed when she has you chage in her living room, while she waits in the kitchen. She used to own a store in the Fenway, but now just does work in her apartment. Unfortunately, I really wish that I had taken my wedding dress elsewhere. I found it VERY difficult to work with Brunhilde. She was a week later then she promised with my dress alterations and very inflexible with when I could pick my dress up after she finally finished. When I picked up my dress, it turns out that she had left all sorts of seams open on the inside of the dress and had done a sloppy job with the hem. I had to take it back to have her finish the job. In the end, the alterations were more expensive than the quality of the job and the dress fit poorly after all of that. I didn't have her work on anything else b/c I just didn't trust her work. Plus, some of the things that she said to me when I dropped my dress off were very off color (such as reminding me that most marriages end in divorce - totally out of the blue and why would you say that to someone who is about to get married?!). She has gotten many other good reviews which is why I selected her, but I can't add my support to the group. Sorry folks! read more

Her work is precise and meticulous. Above all, the price was extremely low considering the amount of work she did. Beware, you change in her family room, which is separate from her work area, and non-invasive, but equally peculiar. I had no trouble changing there, but someone else may.
