When I walked in I was super surprised to be greeted by a virtual assistant through a monitor. It was something straight out of the Jetsons. After they asked me a few questions they happened to have an opening an hour later so I swiped that one up and came back after a bit. I was randomly assigned a hairstylist, Minnie, and it was like the stars in the universe aligned because we clicked right away. She asked me all about my hair and what I was looking for. I'm a wing it type of person but I did have some things in mind. I ended up getting a trim with some wisby longish bangs and she was able to keep my length which was awesome. At the end she mentioned the different products she used in my hair and sent me home with a "care card" with recommendations on when to return and who else to see if she wasn't in. I just happened to be scrolling through my Yelp app looking for salons nearby and Penzone jumped out at me because this location has been there forever. I've also had my hair cut at one of their other locations forever ago and when I looked at their availability, they had an appointment the very next day at 5pm. I didn't even care who the stylist was, I just needed it done. I arrived right on time, checked in, and grabbed a beverage while I waited. It wasn't long before I was greeted by my stylist, Sage. She was easy to talk to, listened to what I wanted, and gave good advice and direction when I was tempted to do something I wasn't planning on doing. I knew exactly what I wanted, as I was looking to get the same cut I did last summer. Your basic long bob, about collar bone length. We did the washing and cutting and drying and cutting again and I was out of there in about an hour and a half. I'm really pleased with it and enjoyed Sage's approach so I made an appointment to come back in a few months. The price point was cheaper than the place I used to go to and I was way more satisfied.

When I went back recently, it wasn't as great of an experience. The girl who cut my hair was friendly but my haircut was uneven. I caught that some of it was uneven in the back and she fixed it but then when I got home and curled my own hair (because it wasn't styled there) I realized that the two sides were uneven and the back too. With the uneven hair, I tried to call the salon before I had to leave to go out of time but calls went straight to a voicemail and they weren't very timely in calling me back. Update: They responded to my comment on their booking site and said the manager would be reaching out, but there has been no contact. If I didn't handle getting my hair fixed elsewhere, I would be even more disappointed.

She gave me the best shampoo/condition of my life. Her hands are absolute magic. I have a Drybar membership and get blow outs regularly and I have never had such a magical scalp massage. I used to only trust one person to cut my hair for 14 years. Now that haircuts cost an arm and a leg where I live, I'm always in search for a reasonably priced haircut when I'm traveling. Gretchen, should charge more!!! I'm not sure if it's the premium products this salon uses or Gretchen's magic but I've never had a blow out last this long! This was absolutely ideal for me because my blowout looked fresh for the three days of the conference. Last, Gretchen is the absolute sweetest person and so easy to chat with. Please move to San Francisco, Gretchen! I would surely come to get a trim and blowout once a month if I was local.

As a result, I've had appointments with many of the women here and they all have done a fantastic job. The usual visit goes: I do a terrible job explaining what I want exactly (usually accompanied by a picture or two), they somehow decipher it and make their own suggestions, and I walk out loving my new color (and cut but I usually just trim a couple inches so nothing special there). Everyone's super nice and they're good at reading whether or not I want to chat or just have an hour or two of relative silence/escape from my hectic life. They also always suggest cheaper ways of doing what I want and I'm grateful for that (and it always looks amazing). They also always take into account my infrequency of visits and suggest things that will take less upkeep which is also appreciated. Picture is just the most recent haircut and color; sorry it's just half my hair but it might give you an idea! The only problem is that parking is a nightmare in the area. There are usually some free meters in the area (try a street down from the salon, next to the UDF) but if you're getting something that might take more than two hours, those two hour meters aren't super helpful.
