I've been in desperate need of a hair cut for quite some time and was also looking for a new place or person to do it for me. Thanks to a sheer act of spontaneity I finally made it happen and Penzone made the cut. I just happened to be scrolling through my Yelp app looking for salons nearby and Penzone jumped out at me because this location has been there forever. I've also had my hair cut at one of their other locations forever ago and when I looked at their availability, they had an appointment the very next day at 5pm. I didn't even care who the stylist was, I just needed it done. I arrived right on time, checked in, and grabbed a beverage while I waited. It wasn't long before I was greeted by my stylist, Sage. She was easy to talk to, listened to what I wanted, and gave good advice and direction when I was tempted to do something I wasn't planning on doing. I knew exactly what I wanted, as I was looking to get the same cut I did last summer. Your basic long bob, about collar bone length. We did the washing and cutting and drying and cutting again and I was out of there in about an hour and a half. I'm really pleased with it and enjoyed Sage's approach so I made an appointment to come back in a few months. The price point was cheaper than the place I used to go to and I was way more satisfied. read more

If you have any respect for your hair or yourself - don't book here or see Lainey. First, being late is normal - not acknowledging your late is rude. I booked a full highlight and cut and realized as she was almost done foiling that the entire bottom row of my hair wasn't foiled in the back. I asked her if I booked a full or partial and she said full. So I inquired about this full row of hair not being weaved - her response? "I can just charge you for a partial." Okay, I'm not concerned about prices but would just like what I asked for. She then rudely and unprofessionally told me that she was going to be cutting most of the back anyways and you won't be able to see that part of my hair AND if wanted those parts foiled that was a different service and would take her longer and finished off my telling me that if I was dissatisfied once she was done we would "go from there." My hair doesn't even touch my shoulders. I declined to let her cut it due to her vibe and that she couldn't handle a round brush to even give me a good blow out. She maybe said two things to me while I was there, not inviting or kind but had no problem chatting it up with coworkers. Clearly Lainey didn't want to be at work too late or find new clients with her attitude. I've had my hair this length for 3 years and have been getting fulls and partials the entire time and have never had someone completely not do underneath for a full - if it is truly a different service would have been happy to pay, but truly just felt like I was treated poorly and trying to get money out of me. Oh, and whoever runs the front desk could not have been less interested or concerned when I told her this was the worst experience I've had in a salon. Waste of my time and money. read more

They only have one individual who does massages, one nail technician that does pedicures, one expert who does facials.... And so on. So, with that being said, I was told I could call another location and try to schedule our services with them if we wanted to have things done together. I booked my mom a highlight and cut with Jazmine, and I had a massage with Camille as well as a pedicure with Jillian. While my mom was getting her hair foiled, I started off my time with an awesome massage. Camille went above and beyond to take care of me, getting me water upon finishing my service and checking on me throughout. I took advantage of the complimentary coffee service, the orange infused water, and the bar throughout my time at Penzone. I had a sparkling wine while I enjoyed my pedicure which was great. Camille is absolutely the best massage therapist I've ever had, and I've been to multiple spas in the area, I'll absolutely be back to book with her! They offer complimentary choice of aromatherapy or hot stones for your massage service - go with the hot stones, they were awesome! I would have given 5 stars except for what happened with my sister. The person doing my hair, Grace, was amazing, she was really nice, and did my hair amazing. My sister had Deserae, my mother had made us both appointments under her name so maybe she thought it was a mistake or something. But when she called my sister in she was being really rude and bossy. And my sister told her and literally showed her what she wanted and she did it horribly. My sister asked for no more than an inch cut off on the bottom (she has short hair and wants to grow it out) and long kinda wispy bangs, reminder she literally showed her pictures. She chopped off 3-4 inches of her hair on the bottom and the bangs are so bad, they don't even cover her entire forehead they're so short. Its especially bad because her hair takes forever to grow. read more

Visited this salon for the first time on New Year's Eve, and I will definitely go back. It's conveniently located in the Short North. It has a chic vibe and it's cute and modern inside and has a BAR where you can order alcoholic beverages from! I will definitely go in early next time to take advantage of that! lol My stylist, Joey, was absolutely amazing. He was fun and knowledgeable and gave me a fantastic cut. I've had great experiences with Penzone in the past but the quality's gone downhill and the stylists are rude and unprofessional. I was booked with my preferred stylist today. The salon called me a half hour before my appointment told me my stylist couldn't see me because she got backed up with other clients. This was already unprofessional but I agreed to reschedule my appointment for a half hour later with another stylist. I get to the salon for my appointment and wait a while. The manager comes by a couple times and says my stylist will come out soon. My stylist finally comes out after 20 minutes and she does not apologize for being late. I was there for a bang trim and after we sit down the stylist tries to hand me a flat iron and tells my I need to straighten my own bangs before she cuts my hair. I told her I didn't want to do this myself and would prefer she flatirons my hair. The stylist rolled her eyes and refused to flat iron my bangs, and she said she'd have to cut it my bangs without straightening them. I felt uncomfortable with the stylist and I did not proceed with the haircut. The manager of the salon rebooked my appointment and offered me 10% off, but I cancelled the appointment because I do not feel right going back to a salon where the stylists are so disrespectful. read more

Is my hair is too dark to have natural blonde color? It really shouldn't be. I asked for natural blonde so it was lifted to get lighter from my last visit and remove any brassiness. Now the blonde is all gone and it looks like it did before I even came in. What is the point?? The back side of my head has random strong streaks of orange blonde while the front is completely gone. I went to penzone salon for the first time. My experience could have been better. I wanted a little bit of volume in my hair but was unsure which style would suit me. I asked the stylist to cut it according to her, supposing she had a better idea, but she just cut it blunt and a few layers on the front side of my hair. My hair is very thin, and after the haircut, it looks more thinner. I didn't enjoy my first visit. I wanted some new style but ended up with the same straight cut. My regular nail salon had moved and I was looking for a place for a manicure. Penzone is convenient. The technician was delightful. The rest of customer service was less than adequate. After checking in electronically, I was sitting for 15 minutes past my appointment time before anyone showed up at the front desk. I was getting up to leave by the time someone acknowledged that I had an appointment. Even the nail tech was embarrassed by the lack of communication. Checking out and paying involved the same lack of customer service -- I had to ask to get someone to come to the front desk so I could pay. I would have said the gel manicure was fine until it began to peel off within about 10 days. Given that Penzone charges about double what I'm used to paying for a manicure, this is the first and last time I will use this salon. read more

Very poor to no communication from this salon. My friend bought me a gift certificate and I wanted to use it before a trip to California. I called them a few days in advance before an appointment - they don't answer their phone - I tried calling them multiple times - they leave you on hold forever and the line goes dead. They also say you can text them, which I did. I finally got a text response with an apology for the late reply, asking me if I had anything on my nails, I replied right away saying I did not. No further communication from them that day or the next. I texted them again asking about an appointment time the following day. Crickets. Super disappointing. It's unfortunate that I won't have my nails done before my trip and I feel bad that my friend's generous gift is going to waste. read more

She offered me a free service, if I would be her model for a new process that will be coming out soon. Of course, I said yes. She always does a great job. The problem: Georgia, the technician sitting next to her booth, was watching us and made me very uncomfortable. She pulled out her phone and pretended to be looking at something when I noticed that she took my picture. I find this disturbing! Very unprofessional! I had been going to the "Max the Salon" aka the old Penzone Short North for a few years since it was right down the street from where I live. I mostly go in once a month for my brows, but did get my haircut there once before as well. I was disappointed when they moved further down the street because it's not quite walking distance anymore (especially in the winter!). However, I've had luck scoring street parking at all hours of the day. I have still been going here for my monthly brow appointments. However, I had a less-than-stellar experience which is why I'm rating them a 3. I find the front desk service to be inconsistent. The incident that frustrated me was when I scheduled an appointment with someone I hadn't seen before (I just needed first available). I got put at the "Brow Bar" which is essentially a seat that leans back RIGHT in front of the window on High St. I really didn't like it and it was not an enjoyable experience at all. It's awkward because it was an evening so you feel like you are some zoo animal with all these people walking right by the big windows. Also, the seating and positioning is just awkward. So awkward that my brow specialist couldn't really reach over me and ended up spilling wax on my forehead, going into my hair. She profusely apologized and tried to clean it up. However, I was kind of over it and my meter was going to run out, so I told her I had to go. I went to the front desk and complained and both girls couldn't have cared less. Their advice? "Make sure you don't schedule at the brow bar next time." I honestly contemplated even going back. I also shared with them that I do not feel that an appt at the Brow Bar should cost the same price as one in a secluded room because they are not at all the same experience. However, after a month or so, I got over it and now am sure to take their advice and book with either Marnie or Catalina in an actual room. Also, I do have to note that the last two times I've been in there, the front desk service is extremely pleasant. I went in there on a Thursday morning and I arrived pretty early so I chatted with an associate named Kiersten and she was super friendly. I also went in today and a girl with brunette hair was so smiley and sweet as well. So all in all, my best advice is to skip the "Brow Bar" if you're getting your brows done. Ensure you get scheduled in an actual room. Also, seems they have upgraded the front desk staff, so there is a chance my review will go up after future visits. read more

After trying out several salons in the Columbus area, I decided to try Penzone. I am pretty picky about where I get my hair done and it took some trial and error after I moved to the city. I've now had my hair dyed and cut twice there with Andy and I absolutely love it! The new location is really nice with lots of natural light coming through the windows, and a beverage bar with coffee and cocktails!! So I just moved here a couple of months ago and I was a little disappointed to find so few places that do Brazilian bikini waxes in a city of this size. What is a lady to do with her Downtown in this neck of the woods? I know that getting a Brazilian is not everyone's cup of tea. And that's fine. But I get it done semi regularly and it's important to find an esthetician who knows her way around a bikini area. Thank goodness I found Jade P. at Max. She was professional, talented, fast, and easygoing. Obviously, having wax spread on your junk and hair ripped out is not the comfiest thing in the world, but Jade makes it as easy as it can be. I have avoided getting a Brazilian wax in Columbus since I moved here almost two years ago, because let's be real, that's some personal business, and I was attached to my girl back home. But, alas, with vacation looming, it was time. I sought out Jade at the suggestion of another Yelp reviewer, and I am SO glad I did. She was super quick - the whole thing lasted maybe 10 to 15 minutes tops - and very professional. Is it comfortable and painless? OF COURSE NOT, as hair is being ripped off your lady parts, but again, Jade does everything so fast that you barely have time to register the pain, and she does try to make you feel at ease without engaging in inane chatter. I found the salon pretty comfortable too. The styling floor seemed laid back, and the receptionist was pleasant. Parking isn't great, but it's the Short North, so that's expected. I walked in wanting a little change without something crazy different. The atmosphere is modern and welcoming and the stylist was pleasant without being too intrusive/chatty (which I like). She blow-dryed (blew-dry?) and styled my hair for no charge, and I walked out feeling HOT! Although I'll admit I've only been there once, I have only needed to go once this year! Ok so i'm a guy who doesn't really need a complicated haircut. my hair is pretty short, thick and straight. I've been to this salon twice, because of reviews here. The first time i went there i said that don't cut it too short because my cheeks are round and big, and if you cut it short, especially the sides, i will look so much fatter. However the stylist doesn't seem to hear what i'm saying and cut it by her way. My hair ended up going so short, as short as 1 cm on the sides, that .4 inches (i actually used a marker because i was really pissed). The second time around, i tried booking the appointment with another stylist. I SPECIFICALLY said that i did not want to see the stylist that had previously cut my hair. after arriving at the salon, guess who shows up? as you can imagine she cut my hair super short again. and i will definitely not going to go back there. It was a steamy Spring afternoon. I had been running errands like a manwoman. Sweating up a storm. In very private and uncomfortable places. My hair was a hot mess and a half. And I was going out in just 2 short hours, with more errands yet to run. I mean, hello, First World Problems! Fortunately, Max the Salon had an opening for a blowout with Tony within 15 minutes of my panicked call. Sign. Me. Up. Unfortunately, my elation was short-lived. Upon arriving, I was informed that Tony was running "just a few minutes behind." Fine. No biggie. However, a few minutes = 16 minutes in Max the Salon time. WTH?! Can't they already witness my frenzied, frizzy state? Did I not impress upon them the importance of moving with a sense of urgency today? Le sigh. Eventually, Tony came to fetch me and I have to say, he eased my anxiety almost immediately. He was very friendly, receptive to what I wanted and my current concerns with my cut. Whilst shampooing me, he gave me a scalp massage that can only be described as heavenly (save for the riotous Furby story he shared with me during the 'poo). Overall, I was very happy with the way my hair looked and felt when I left. Tony could have worked just a bit faster, but I accept responsibility for that, as I didn't reiterate my time crunch when I sat down in his chair. As I don't have a regular stylist, and since Tony and I hit it off, I'd definitely come back... when I am not pressed for time. read more

3.5 stars I ended up at MAX The Salon because it's a short walk from the Crowne Plaza (where I was staying). I liked that I could book my appointment online, and I was able to get a same day appointment. I had the petite pedicure (30 mins) which seemed a bit pricey ($35) for a basic pedicure compared to ones I've had in Los Angeles. But everything was very clean, and Jade was friendly and did a good job. They didn't have dryers though, so I sat around for 30 minutes after my appointment waiting for my nails to dry (my wimpy Southern California cold tolerance made it unimaginable for me to wear flip flops or sandals out of the salon on a cold mid-November day). I most likely won't be back as I don't live in Columbus. read more

After a not so great haircut from the dublin salon which felt like a sanctuary for soccer moms i tried the hipper short north spot. You can choose from stylists or designers depending on how much you want to spend on a cut. I chose a stylist and I have been seeing the same one for the last year and a half.
