After pickle ball we were hungry and decided to get some bbq. The pork bbq was nice and tender, and I also enjoyed their Cole slaw right on top in my sandwich. The mac and cheese was very tasty and cheesy. I do wish they had fresh cut fries, but I do enjoy their seasoning on their crinkle cut fries. I asked for a refund. When the food finally came out, I declined it. I'd already lost confidence in how this place operates. Cute little bbq spot in Suffolk. The line is always long so I had to see what the hype was about. The line moves fast but expect a little wait. This is cafeteria/counter style fast casual BBQ. I liked being able to see all the food options available. My husband and I shared the meat sweat sampler. We subbed the pork bbq for extra chicken bbq and had collards and fries as our sides. We also had two bbq sauces suggested by the workers: the mustard one and a classic red. The brisket was absolutely amazing although could have benefited from a little more salt. The best option of everything we had. Second best was the sausage. The chicken was average and the rib was chewy. Maybe we got a bad one. The fries were great and the collards were different. I probably wouldn't order collards again. I hear the Mac and cheese is good and will give that a try. I personally felt everything lacked salt but was easy to adjust based on preference. This place is always crazy crowded, lines out the door and wrapped around the side. Perhaps that was why I was expecting something outstanding. I wound up slightly disappointed. The food is average leaning towards good. The spouse and son loved it. I wasn't all that impressed. I suspect it was the price and my high expectations. The meat is tasty but super fatty. I'm not a fan of that type of cut and feel like they're skimping and giving me subpar meat (probably just me). The seasoning they use is good but nothing that will make me crave it later. I was just left feeling underwhelmed. Small portions, they carefully weigh every ounce out. Gotta be sure to not give you any extra at those high prices. Overpriced and terrible ordering system. For example, the menu says order a platter with 1 meat and two sides. So I have my order ready to go. Except you have to tell the meat people what you want, then farther down the line, you have to tell the sides people what you want. Why can't I just give you my whole order then collect it at the end like a normal place? Plus I have no idea if I was even charged correctly. $200 including tax and tip! Omfg. Restaurant is new and clean, the service is slow, expect to stand in line for at least an hour as you stand inside the door. I have had the pork and chicken that was great from the previous visit. The beef rib need major improvement. I got 3 ribs, as you get them the ribs look great with nice smoke bark on the exterior of the meat as you get to the center the half of it was tallow. And the rest was bone weight. Disappointing since each pound of ribs is $28 plus. The fixings are great. I hope you guys take this as constructive criticism. As a fellow smoker of meats I always remove the excess tallow(grease) from the bone. Would like to hear back and see where this goes. read more

Which is weird because the meat is pulled out a warmer unless we I came to close to closing and they shut the warmer off. I have always enjoyed the corn pudding, but today it was sold out . Even the french fries. Nevertheless, I opted for the beans which were good and piping hot . I wish they keep the meat piping hot like they do the sides. Trash was over flowing and it was weird that the guy didn't dump it. He took a tray and push the trash down. Another observation was employees touched everything with the same gloves. I saw a guy make coleslaw. He never changed gloves and scooped the slaw out with his hands . Then touched everything else even his shirt a few times. Redwood started out as an amazing food truck. Then a very good brick and mortar in Norfolk. The VB location wasn't nearly as good as the original but was still a decent place to grab lunch. The Suffolk location is terrible. I don't know how you make bland pulled pork but someone at this location can obviously tell me. The rest of the food is also bland and the BBQ sauces are as well. Good luck getting collards. They clearly don't make enough. When it opened the line was around the building but it has already faded to a short line inside. Q Daddy's in Smithfield is way better and better priced. I'd rather a mission BBQ had opened and I always try to support local. read more

We decided to have an impromptu dinner, and I wasn't aware that it wasn't a sit down restaurant until we arrived. We shared the meat sweats platter with baked beans, fries, and banana-misu. I litterley watched a girl spend 5 minutes to figure out how to close a box. I got the lunch special pulled pork. He put a small handful of meat on a bun. I also got broccoli salad and drink. My bill was $15 after tax. The sandwich was gone in 4 bites. Broccoli salad tasted like only vinegar on it. The sauces are watery and tasted very vinegary. We won't be back. Horrible food. I got rung up wrong so they had to fix my order and which took a little long. However it wasn't a problem for me things happen and the customer service was great so it was fine. However for the mistake and wait the manager/owner refunded me part of the order and threw in free banana pudding. The customer service alone is enough to make me go back. The brisket was juicy and the right char and fat combo was amazing. I liked the greens and slaw. I wasn't a huge fan of the pulled chicken but I would give it a try again. I ordered brisket because, visiting relatives in Texas has changed my whole perspective on barbecue in general. Texas brisket is my absolute favorite. But this is the worse brisket I have ever been served, even outside of Texas. It was supposed to be chopped but came out closer to shredded, which I hate. I ordered beans and potato salad for my sides. They were out of beans so I decided on corn pudding (good, old fashioned spoon bread) and they were out of that too. I wasn't in the mood for broccoli salad so I ordered Mac and cheese. That made it 2 carbs but, what the heck, I decided to go for it. They were both terrible. The potato salad just tasted like celery seed. Yuck! The Mac and cheese didn't have any taste. So now I know to stay away from Redwood Smoke Shack.
