There are a few rules when it comes to Texas barbecue. The biggest is "Get there early, or leave…read morehungry." I very rarely make that mistake, but when you have over a three-hour drive to get to a spot, balancing an early arrival with meaningful sleep is no easy task. I left before 9 am and through the lengthy drive, I got to B4 Barbecue a little before noon. B4 is a little different. It's not a food truck. It's not your typical brick and mortar. B4 is housed in Mabank Feed, next to plenty of Ariat products and horse food. I expect most places in Austin to have a line, but I didn't expect B4 to wrap around the entire feed store. As I sat there waiting to order, they were selling out fast. By 12:30, they were down to Texas Twinkies and their house sausage. I ordered one of each plus a side of their Mexican Street Corn (Elote to the ball knowers). The house sausage was very solid. It was extremely juicy and firm with great flavor. However, the star of the show was the Texas Twinkie. A jalapeño stuffed with brisket, wrapped in bacon, and smoked to perfection. It wasn't too spicy, but the jalapeño created a solid base while the brisket inside was shockingly creamy and soft like the inside of a Twinkie. The smoked bacon wrap added a final touch of flavor. It was super unique and incredible. I feel honored to even get to try it. As my only side, the Mexican Street Corn rocked and had a ton of flavor throughout. The bread served on the side was Texas toast that was buttery and crispy. A very welcome change from the typical white bread slices I normally have with my barbecue. For the travelers like me, if they have the stock, the $35 sampler will get you 1 slice of everything on their menu plus 1 side. Worth it if you're riding solo and need to try a little bit of this and that. They also sell boba which I wanted to order but completely forgot to ask for while I was there. I want to go back to B4. I need to go back to B4. If this small sample was a sign, this is another heavy hitter in the world of Texas barbecue. You just have to get there before 11 if you want to try it. Driving around Texas eating at places on the Texas Monthly Top 50 BBQ places…read more Doing a 48 hour trip and B4 Barbeque was our first stop on Wednesday. Beware that this BBQ spot is located inside of a country feed store. The sign for the feed is large and visible from the road while the B4 sign is smaller. Parking lots of gravel lot. You enter the feed store walk through all the clothing and look to your left. We arrived at 10:45 and we were first in line. They didn't open till 11:15am as they had computer problems. You order and pay at the counter they prepare the order of food in the back and bring it out to your table. We got the 2 meat plate with 2 sides (1/2) pound of protein and we added a Texas Twinkie, The plate also includes pickles, onions, bread and BBQ sauce. The brisket looked good and tasted ok, it was sliced a bit thinner than what Zi am used to getting. The sausage was very tasty. The Texas Twinkie was a small size Twinkie not worth the price. The street corn looks beautiful and tasted delicious. The potato salad had too much vinegar for my taste. The roll was nice and warm. In my opinion B4 Barbeque is a good place to stop and eat at if you are driving by. Congrats on making the Texas Monthly Top 50 list.
