If you've never been to the Buc-ee's in Temple, it's hard to describe just how massive and impressive this place is. It's not a gas station; it's a full-blown destination. First off, the bathrooms are legendary for a reason--hands down the cleanest, most private, and most abundant stalls and urinals you will ever find on the highway. Outside, the sheer number of gas pumps means you never have to wait, and they even have a great car wash on-site. Inside, it feels like walking into a massive, one-stop-shop mall. If you need it--or if you forgot to pack it--they have it. They're selling everything from outdoor gear, deer stands, and lawn chairs to high-end Ray-Ban sunglasses and beautiful home decor. Then there's the food. You can smell the roasted pecans and smoked meats the second you walk in. The chopped brisket sandwiches are amazing, and the snack selection is endless--wall-to-wall jerky, fudge, and every road trip snack you could ever long for. Nasty Nuggets!! We typically LOVE Buc-ee's... we have "donated" a LOT of $$ over the years... from BBQ & Chips to Candy & Fudge... oh... and all the GAS! lol And recommended people give them a try... This weekend, we thought that after all these years, we would try their "Nuggets"... they were completely Styrofoam!! So bad! Heading back home, we wanted to return them... we weren't sure if they were really Styrofoam... or simply stale; either way, they were nasty! We didn't want a refund, but an exchange for one of the many OTHER Buc-ee's products we love! They said, "No Refunds; we can only give you the same product!" I said that's ridiculous... they're nasty/stale... after a little back-and-forth, they (Ryan) agreed to a merchandise exchange... I waited for my husband to gather items, got back in line... and started over (with Carson) ... I pointed to Ryan and said HE already agreed to the exchange... so HE called a Manager... HE came over, started the convo all over again... then he said, "Let me get someone" (Mind you, it's a $7 BAG OF NUGGETS)... ANOTHER "MANAGER" came over ... "Can I help you?" I said, "What do you mean... Can you help me? I'm sure you have already been given the information... Do you really want me to start over?", She then said, "Okay, we don't give refunds; Corporate won't let us... bla bla bla." This was the busiest Buc-ee's I have ever been to. I seriously am like most Texan's who build a stop at Buc-ee's into my travel road stops, so I have been to several, but I have NEVER seen one where finding a parking spot or a pump available was an issue, until this visit. It was unbelievable and my three other travel companions all thought the same thing! Nonetheless, the place was well-stocked and the bathrooms were spotless. It's a destination! Walmart meets Cracker Barrel with barbecue and jerky and a thousand gas pumps. You have to try it. Wow! I don't know why I was in Temple but I will sure go back, just to get a chopped brisket sandwich from Buc-ee's. It was my first time there and WOW THE BATHROOMS WERE SO CLEAN, it even has toilet sanitizer. I'm still not sitting on a public toilet but I was still amazed with the toilet sanitizer. "Willy Wonka Walmart" is how I describe this energetic, bright, and well-organized superstore full of inexpensive junk you think you need, all because its masterful marketing linked it to a rodent. Plus everyone, including the workers, are happy to be there and there's no long lines. Lots of merch and food. I got a foam baseball, a flashlight key chain, a cooler bag, my $1.19 XL Diet Dr. Pepper, and Beaver Nuggets for the neighbors, while the wife nabbed Mini Waffle Cones and Butter Toffee Pecans, which I highly recommend. This being my third time at a Buc-ee's, I was smart enough to go hungry and got a brisket sandwich from the busy busy foodworkers. Once second largest at 60,000 square feet, this particular Buc-ee's, the relief point between Dallas and Austin, ranks 11th in size out of 54. The first and only gas station/convenience store I have EVER been to that makes their customers pay for water. An employee actually followed my wife into the parking lot to try to get her to come back in and pay FOUNTAIN DRINK PRICES for putting WATER in her OWN CONTAINER. She dumped it out right in front of him and I'm proud of her for doing it. I only wish I could return the tank of gas we bought from them. Everybody else can make this work, why not Buc-ee's? They make money hand over fist, so their pettiness speaks volumes about how little they actually value their customers, so we are DONE with them. We saw a Buc-ee's on our way back into Austin and absolutely had to stop! Others told us that this is actually a smaller size one but since it was the only one I've been to, it seemed big to me. Think gas station market, combined with a souvenir store and to-go barbecue joint plus toys and clothing. They probably have more than you'd ever need at a gas station stop! The salted caramel crunchy puff snacks were definitely one of our top finds. The mascot himself was walking around, so our kids loved that! Now I have to hand it to these guys, as the inside is essentially hot food, soda fountains, sweets, you name it for quick bites, that makes up about 30% of the store. Then you've got just insane amounts of Buc-ee's tourist itemsz. Pretty much almost anything you can think of they've got. We picked up a stuffed animal for my kid, some snacks, & some hot food that wasn't half bad. Pulled pork sandwich was pretty good as was the Mac n cheese. What a place!! We first visited 2 years ago on a visit to TX driving to Houston and this time, we were visiting Austin. My nephew loves this place. There is something about this Beaver that kids just love, lol. It's overwhelming because it's just huge and soo many people. The bathrooms always have a line so be prepared depending on when you visit. Clean. Take time to walk around because there is soo much stuff!! Our favorite really are the fresh made potato chips. They have a great crunch and makes an easy snack while driving. Nephew also enjoys the brisket. We always get some jerky since they have so many different flavors and you can sample! I do wish they had more samples of their stuff. If I can sample, I'm more likely to buy. Our last trip, I feel like they had more items for sample. So this may vary depending on when you go. Every time I walk in, I end up meeting some of the coolest people -- folks who will straight-up spark a conversation with you about how awesome this place is, like we're all part of the same little roadside cult. The place is spotless, like they hired an entire military unit whose only mission is to keep the floors shining. The staff is friendly, welcoming, and honestly feels like family the way they greet you with that "we got you" energy. The place was so packed I had to wonder what the fire inspector would say about the maximum capacity of the building. Ha ha! Overall: 4.4/5 Great service & rest stop! We were on a long late-night drive and stopped by Buc-ee's to grab some food and use the restroom. Buc-ee's is always clean, and I love their red/green light system that lets you know if a stall is available. My husband and I shared the Big Buckin' Brisket Sandwich ($13.99). They gave us small containers of onions, pickles, and a 10 oz BBQ sauce for free, which usually cost $0.25 each. I didn't think the onions and pickles were enough; there should definitely be double the amount for a sandwich this size. The BBQ sauce portion was sufficient though. First time seeing a Buc-ee's! It's enormous! They have many many flavors of soda but only a couple of sugar-free options. Was hoping they might have a sugar-free slurpee, but they did not. Then I thought, well I'm in Texas, I should get iced tea but then they did not have sliced lemons. I saw a number of people getting the iced coffee so I went with that but upon the first sip, it really wasn't very good so I wasn't able to take it my usual black and had to add creamer. They do have a ton of creamer, syrups and other flavors which seems to be the Buc-ee's way to make up for the bad coffee. The bathroom was just okay, not as good as Maverick. It was interesting that it's also a shopping destination. I'd never seen carts at a gas station before. There's a large gift shop akin to what you'd find at Cracker Barrel. The roasted nuts were pretty tempting. They were also assembling pulled pork sandwiches in the middle of the store but as a vegetarian, they certainly weren't catering to me. Around the pumps and in the parking lot is really disorganized. Needs stop signs, lanes, and/or crosswalks. Too much just open pavement, not clear who has right of way. Interesting novelty but I wouldn't go out of my way to go to another one. I also don't understand the no-truckers thing, why make a stand on this? Buc-ees has gone from really good to very inconsistent. One of the few places to have Dr Pepper Zero on their fountains (one of four at least), it's only actually in stock half the time. Nobody can seem to figure out it repeatedly sells out and order and stock enough to keep it flowing. CHICKEN WRAP BROKE MY TOOTH! I have always had good experiences with Buccees, but the last time I stopped, I went and grabbed a chicken wrap. Something from the cold section, because I wasn't feeling BBQ and I was in between Austin and Dallas. I get in my truck and I start my travel and unwrap my wrap when I take a bite. It's pretty good. I take another bite. Still pretty good, a little dry, probably won't get again, but I'm hungry. I take a third bite and BAM I bite into something super hard, I don't know if it was bone, gristle, or something different in the wrap, but it hurt the side of my mouth. I was instantly grossed out and set the wrap down to keep my eyes on the road. On the top left side of my mouth ift felt like I may have gotten some cabbage or some of the chicken stuck in my teeth, so I start to fish it out with my tongue, that's when I realize the and ENTIRE QUARTER OF MY TOOTH IS NOW MISSING! I'm shocked, but I keep driving, and suddenly I'm missing a chunk of my tooth. The mystery hard chunk in my wrap broke my tooth and since it broke so deep, I may have to get a whole root canal. My final and 2nd Buc-ee's stop at Temple, Texas. If I could go to all the Buc-ee's, I would as each one may be bigger or smaller and inventory differences. They have a Penny machine in the back of the kids section that I had a hard time using, but an employee helped me out. So I didn't lose the money I put inside. Makes a nice souvenir! It was still too early and I never had a chance to eat a pulled pork brisket sandwich here. So sad. all the hot food looks good and better than those yuckie truck stops you see out in the road. Apparently there is a bad time to stop at Buc-ee's. When the whole family has just had a large BBQ lunch nearby. So no one is thirsty, hungry, or needs to use the bathroom.
