Pricing is a bit confusing as Many plants aren't marked. Ends up there's an occasional color chart showing paper spikes in the pots to indicate pricing. It really wasn't clear for this first time visitor. You can easily drop a few hundred in a brief visit. Buchanan's, a nursery located in The Heights, offers a lot for your gardening needs (even for newbs like myself). Flowers, succulents, bushes, grasses, vegetable plants, trees, pots, garden decor, soils. The staff is sprinkled about the nursery offering help, and if they can't answer your question, there's likely someone else who does. Do your research and price comparison beforehand, because there are better deals out there for some items. I enjoy going to Buchanan's (2nd visit here) when I'm in the heights area. Today I wanted to stop by to get two new plant babies cuz #SELFCARE I was unsure what to get and one of the workers there was so helpful to me by asking me to kinda see what plants I'm drawn to. I think her genuine energy and wanted to help me help myself, educating me about the air purifying properties of ALL plants and the toxic ones to pets. I will definitely be coming back to get more plant babies and terra cotta pots because I also learned about their good draining water properties for the specific plants that I got. I was recommended this place by a friend that is in the know with all things plants. If you drive past this place, you can miss it (I sure did). The parking can be a bit tricky, if you're coming from the main road, it might be easier to drive towards the rear to part, otherwise, plenty of street parking. Staff was pleasant, and seemed super helpful. HUGE selection, but a bit on the marked up side. I found things to be 20-30% more expensive than I was expecting. BUT everyone has to make a profit. I found some of the smaller selections to be more inline with what I was expecting to spend. Will be back for sure! read more

This nursery was very well organized and the staff extremely helpful. I was so happy to see so many native plants and especially excited about the host plant area. I drove a ways to get to this nursery for the caterpillar/moth/butterfly host plants and it did not disappoint. They also had a LOT of really cool pots, water features and succulents. This is what plant lovers dreams are made of. This place is huge! Such a huge selection of things and just overall amazing! Everything is labeled great with descriptions on what it is and how to properly take care of it. They always have free popsicles for customers which is a nice touch on a hot day outside. The last time we were there they even had free beer, waters, soda & cute Buchanan's koozies. The staff there is also amazing! This will always be the highlight of my day when I get to go here. I absolutely adore succulents. And so when I was in search of succulents to decorate my new office, thanks to other Yelp reviewers, I knew Buchanan's was the place to go! They had plenty of succulents to choose from in their greenhouse. I was so excited, it was unreal. As much as I adore them, you'd think I'd know how to pot and arrange them. Negative, I don't have a green thumb. But thankfully, they do! I brought in my own terrariums and pots and so with their expertise, we were able to pick out ones that I liked along with ones that would fit and go well together. Prices range from 2" succulents at $2.99 each to bigger ones at $7.99 and $8.99 each. They also have prearranged ones at $9.99. So I got a little bit of everything and relied on them to pot and arrange for me. The labor potting fee was minimal! The fee is not fixed and depends on the amount of resources they have to use along with the amount of labor. I had two terrariums and three pots and the labor potting fee was only $15! There's really not much to dislike about any plant nursery, especially when they literally have everything I needed for my gardening project today. I came in looking for succulents, a nice lady pointed me in their general direction and man was I surprised to see thy carried lithops! I've been wanting a lithop for awhile now and picked out a cute trio. While the normal small succulents are priced at $3, this lithop was $5. Not too bad honestly. I browsed a few of the flowering plants and I was very amazed at the huge variety they had as well as how knowledgable their employees are. This place seems to have an employee for every section of the nursery including dirt and fertilizer! The man with the tattoos in charge of the dirt section helped me pick out a cost effective soil that drained well for my succulents and was extremely knowledgable on the different ingredients and substrates found in each bag of potting soil. This review is specifically for my experience purchase of a gift card online, not the shop itself. I live in CA and wanted to send a friend in Houston a housewarming gift card. I purchased online using PayPal, and though PayPal showed I paid, the shop's website showed it did not complete the order. I had to call to confirm the order went thru and waited about 5 minutes for them to find and confirm that a gift card had in fact been mailed out. I asked if the recipient would know who it's from and it sounded like they would not, so I had to text my friend a head's up which kind of ruins the surprise. Came one day months ago as it started raining pretty badly. It's a bit of a trip for me so I went anyways. I was pretty much the only person there buying plants. Well, I guess I don't look like a usual customer who would be in to houseplants but instead of the workers trying to help me they had a girl follow me around acting like she was looking at all the plants near the ones I was looking at to make sure I wasn't stealing anything. She followed me around for a good 20 minutes. I thought maybe I was being paranoid at first so I went to different parts to see if she would follow, and there she was every step of the way. She was very obvious. I don't know if shoplifting and plant shops is common but it was a terrible feeling and I will never go here again. I even had one of their cardboard trays they give out full of plants to indicate I was indeed buying something and not stealing, and they still continued to follow me throughout my shopping experience. I don't know if it was a racially motivated but it was a terrible way to treat a customer who has spent hundreds here in the past. read more

Customer service was incredible! I walked into Buchanan's a bit overwhelmed but on the lookout for a taller plant for my new apartment. I approached a woman named Shanon who helped me find tall, indoor plants. Sharon went out of her way to pull out several varieties of fiddle-leaf figs, explain the different types, and educate me on the care regimen. From there, she left to grab me a cart, helped me pick out the perfect pot, and walked me to the front of the store to check out. I kept telling her she was welcome to check on other customers, but she continued to help me. We checked out, and then she helped carry my purchases around the block to my car. Good selection but extremely over priced. They have very few repeaters and the lines on the weekend are so busy there at leave 30 people in line. The lines will wrap around the store and cars will park in crazy lines along the street. I'll only go if it's early in the morning. They need more registers and maybe make the prices more reasonable. It's my pleasure to write this positive review. From start to finish my experience with Buchanan's has been excellent. Remi took the time to explain to me which tree would best fit in the very difficult area I have. I went back home, showed my husband the pictures of three trees she told me about and we made our choice. I called Remi back who took my order over the phone. Not fighting traffic to get there was a bonus! We then made arrangements for the tree to be delivered and planted. All this took 5 days from start to finish. A great local plant shop in the Heights, on the corner of 11th and Oxford. They carry a wide variety of native plants, which is of course what you should be planting around here for sustainability reasons. I love just strolling through the place. I feel like I'm walking through someone's garden. So much more relaxing and botanically inspiring than pushing a cart down the aisles at a big box home improvement store. They have plenty of other stuff that I have trouble finding elsewhere like a wide selection of attractive planters, for example. There's a lot of things you can use to throw a garden party on the inside--plates, candles, and other cool kitschy stuff. A small bookstore as well. Though sometimes linking it to gardening is a stretch. It's all fun, though, and gives the non-gardeners/kids in your group something to do. They aren't cheap. But then again, they don't sell a ton of cheap stuff. There are plenty of other places that do. read more

Buchanan's stocks an impressive collection of both native plants and non-native plants that are well suited to Houston's climate. Their plants are healthy and everything I have purchased here has grown well after being transplanted to my garden. Most of the plants have been successfully cut and transplanted multiple times. The staff is usually very helpful and well informed. But always do your own homework. The staff recommended an invasive species that should never be planted outside without a good root barrier as an ornamental ground cover for an urban backyard. The plant collection is fantastic and well priced. The inventory of potting and gardening tools is limited and overpriced. read more

Ever since Teas Nursery closed down where do I go to look at plants and flowers? Well the new spot for me is Buchanan's. So why do you ask was I even here? Well they actually house a many food trucks throughout the weekend. So I came for the food truck and stayed for the greenery. I have yet to start planting my garden, but that is because I have about 1 sq foot of actually land. But a guy can dream! I plan on having a house with a decent yard where I can grow all kinds of herbs, vegetables, and flowers! When that time comes I'll know where to go to get whatever I need! This place is awesome if you are looking for anything gardening related. They even have "exotic" plants like venus flytraps and sell awesome little critters like bags of lady bugs (I honestly didn't know they sold this stuff). Bf and I came here as we wanted to buy our first herb! I really don't know much about gardening... sadly only good about eating my food not how it was grown. However Larry was really knowledgeable and super friendly to help us out! Larry showed us all the different types of herbs to choose from, explaining the difference between perennials and annuals, how some need more water/sun, and how to care for them... We finally decided to welcome BASIL to the family and Larry helped us pick out the appropriate vessel/vase and even potted basil for us and set us up with a box in case anything spills. IF you frequent this place you can join their club for discounts and deals and if you bring back the cardboard box I think you can save some money on your future purchases. The BEST part about this place is the complimentary Popsicle, a great way to cool down with this Houston heat. OH, and they also offer treats for pets, this place is GREAT! read more

This is still one of the best nurseries and plant places in the Houston area. If you are looking for a special plant that the big box stores don't carry or have no idea what you need and professional help is needed or aren't sure what kind of soil, compost or fertilizer you should use on your garden...this is the place to go. Everyone there seems to know everything about all things you grow. Need one of a kind pottery or some cool conversational piece or a birdhouse or some wind chimes or spinners or fountains or...if it goes in your special garden, they likely have it. The seminars for each seasonal plantings are super helpful. Grab a handful of gift cards for birthdays and Christmas. I buy catnip here every summer to keep the mosquitoes at bay, succulents like crazy and every so often I go a little wild and buy something I don't know about but will grow in the place I need a new plant. Just tell them what kind of sun and soil you have and they'll find you something. Parking can get tricky on the weekend. Dog friendly! read more

Each time I've come here so far, I've loved it. The staff is so very helpful when it comes to picking plants and how to care for them. I love that they don't pretend to know when they don't and just point you in the right direction to someone that does. They were even helpful when it came to finding outside sources for bulk soil and such. My plants I got for my garden are doing great and I'm excited that I know about them now. Like a lot of people, I've gotten into the houseplant game since COVID hit and have been mostly buying plants online, which can be iffy- with shipping delays and hot weather it's always a gamble on if you're getting alive plants of cooked ones. So when non-essential businesses started reopening my first order of business was to find a local nursery that stocked the kind of plants I wanted, preferably with a great shopping environment, reasonable prices and wide selection. Buchanan's hits all of these requirements! First of all, the place is much larger than I would have thought possible in the heights. There are numerous areas, including a large 'atrium' where they stock their succulents and shade plants (AKA houseplants), full sun areas, a bungalow which stocks home-related and plant themed items (super cute clothing, pillows, throws, decorative items and more that you can browse in the AC), and while I haven't used it I've seen they have a plant clinic where you can bring in your plant that needs some help and they can diagnose it and help you save it. Everything is laid out in a visually pleasing way, with cute pebble paths and water fountains displayed about, plants set up and grouped on different tables and stands, and I love that it doesn't have the 'commercial' feel of some of the other large local spots (Houston Garden Centers for example). Wandering around is a treat, there's so many options and everything looks super healthy and well-cared for. Prices are pretty reasonable, but like most nurseries some times they have lower prices and sometimes higher than other spot,' I wouldn't say they're always the lowest priced or highest priced provider. I haven't been upset with the quality or variety offered, and the prices are reasonable for my expectations. I don't have the time to spend hours hopping from nursery to nursery searching for the right plant at the best price, and the environment is so nice I can bring my 3 year old and we both have a nice time buying plants. If you have the ability to shop around, you can probably find plants cheaper else where. If time is important to you Buchanans has the variety and quality all in one spot. read more
