Each time I've come here so far, I've loved it. The staff is so very helpful when it comes to picking plants and how to care for them. I love that they don't pretend to know when they don't and just point you in the right direction to someone that does. They were even helpful when it came to finding outside sources for bulk soil and such. My plants I got for my garden are doing great and I'm excited that I know about them now. Honestly the first time i came here i was so excited and loved it. The bee mural in the back, the greenhouse but also lots of selection for soils, planters, plants most of all. It was amazing and even though they are pretty pricey i found stuff i was comfortable purchasing. Back in November/December i got a few plants. It was a busy couple of weeks so i hadnt paid much attention to my plants and when i did finally look they were covered in spider mites. Luckily they were mostly quarantined, still not without one taking down a few of my other plants. It's a big disappointment to have them charge as much as they do and kill your other plants in the process. I decided to give them another chance a couple weeks ago and bought the single most expensive plant I've ever bought (25$ but still a lot for one plant for me) after a few days i noticed tiny yellow spots and started watching for spider mites. Sure enough this plant had them too. I realize once could be an isolate incident but twice and this many months apart is an issue. I am not planning on buying from them again but i sure as heck wouldn't buy their bug spray if this is how it works. Otherwise how hard is it to pick up your own bug spray and make sure you're not selling a diseased plant. This was just the last straw as I've been pulling away for months after the first spider mites incident and then seeing how their employee handled herself online. Not only did she try to slight another local mom and pop nursery but then she lied and said she doesn't know how they keep the prices low when she buys the lowest. The same plant i bought here i saw at another nursery 5 minutes away for 15$, they wouldn't sell a plant without making profit and if they can make it at 15$ Buchanan's is gouging at 25$. I dont mind people running their business their way but don't lie and say another nursery can not be making a profit because they're underselling you (keep in mind this was unprovoked on a post praising the mom and pop nursery for being cheap and having a large selection). At the end of the day, their prices are their business, i was responsible for choosing to buy however i bought a healthy plant and that is not what i was sold. I would recommend you check your plants thoroughly before deciding to buy from here. read more

I just really don't know what there isn't to like about this lovely little nursery nestled in the Heights. Though on a slightly smaller scale, it conjures up so many wonderful memories of The Natural Gardener in Austin: nice and knowledgeable staff, a passion for native organic plants, a wide selection, and natural gardening products. I enjoyed their attention to detail as you can see with my attached pic- for most every plant it seemed, they offered tips on growing and harvesting. In the veggie section they made a handy Texas chart applicable to our area on when is best to plant each type of veggie. The prices are very reasonable I'd say when it comes to plants-- about $2 per veggie seedling more or less. And! I don't know if it's because of the great amount of care they put into the plants before I bought them or that I just nurture them more because this place left me with so many warm gardening fuzzies, but my plants are still alive for the first time ever! read more

Going to Buchanan's is like stepping into a zen garden. It's a big lot with both inside and outside areas. This is the only place we could find vegetable seeds. Every single employee was so helpful and gave these gardening newbies their expert advice. They also give you free water and a Popsicle on your way out. I won't lie - I found this price to be pretentious and overpriced the first times I went there, but I have come to greatly appreciate this place and also realized that much of their offerings are priced similarly or even less than Houston Garden Centers. Regardless of the price, they carry so many uniques and natives with a ton of knowledgeable staff ready to help you at every turn. For any special project or problematic area, they will help you figure out good options. Today, for example, I was so impressed when they offered me a variety of options for this indoor area I am working on that has very little lighting but I wanted something that draped downwards. Rather than selling me just anything close to what I needed, they were honest and said that the best option for my project was something that they didn't have in stock at the moment. They offered to order it for me but understood if I didn't want to wait. They could have easily sold me the other option that was likely to not thrive in my house and it would have likely led to well over $150 worth of plants dead within a few months. That, my friends, is how to keep customers for life - honesty, even at the short-term loss of a sale, knowing that I have been and will continue to be a regular patron of theirs. This nursery is very well-stocked and has very knowledgeable sales staff. We were greeted promptly when we entered the property on a very hot day and were shown into the shaded areas where the different types of plants are located. We received all the help we wanted and were left alone when we want to be left alone as well. They have a lovely indoor gift shop with all kinds of household decorating goods and of course plenty of planters and pots. Be sure to support this little gem in the Heights for all your gardening needs! Forget HGC and Walmart. I went this morning and received exceptional customer service. The young woman helped me select exactly what I needed to start my herb garden, explaining the different types of thyme, sage, etc. After checking out, staff carried items to my car, including 40 lb. bag of potting soil. Because of COVID-19, all staff members were following CDC recommendations with facial coverings, sanitizer, and making hand sanitizer available to customers. Carts, counters, and cc machine wiped down between customers. Tape on ground marked where to stand in line to ensure proper distancing while checking out, and they did not allow hoards of people in. I will definitely return as my garden grows read more

Each plant looks well taken care of and there are so many to choose from. I come mainly for the succulents, I've gone to other nurseries in the area but Buchanan's has the most variety. Unfortunately after being repeat customers we were abruptly asked to leave because we didn't have masks. Now that there is no mask mandate in Texas we no longer carry masks around and most normal stores are back to normal. Luckily we had time to find that there is no longer a decent selection of organic herbs and garden plants so no need to press the issue. Looks like we'll be making the trek to Arbor Gate up in Tomball from now on. read more

This place was so cute and had all the plants I would ever want! This is no fancy, boutique nursery with plants that are overpriced (though you can get fancy here too!). They have rows and rows of super cute plants. What I appreciate most is how explicit they are in explaining and showing what would be best for the plants. While some other nurseries will include an informational little tag, Buchanan's often has large signs that explain clearly what kind of environment would be best for the plants. I can't imagine not having a huge smile on your face when you walk into this garden of your dreams. The variety of different plants is huge. Many of what they sell are native to Houston. They will set you up for gardening success! Highly recommend this place if you are in the neighborhood! read more

My flowers are my best friends (next to my dogs). And my favorite part of buying my plants at Buchahan's is that THEY STAY ALIVE! Buchanan's has unique and cool plants, but most importantly, they have healthy plants. I tried "saving money" shopping at less expensive retail places, but I realized that in the long run, you save money by buying quality plants. *Because you don't have to buy them twice!!! When I first moved to Houston from Atlanta, I wanted to have a beautiful flower garden but I didn't know how. My grandmother always had beautiful flowers and it was something I cherished about her. However, I didn't know how or what to grow here. The first few times I went to Buchanan's, I was shy about getting started ... I didn't want to appear ignorant around the plant experts. (And everyone who was holding a plant was an expert in my mind!) I wanted and needed to learn about gardening, but didn't know how to ask for help. I learned that the employees at Buchanan's were there to help people like me. They know all the complicated garden questions, but they also take time to help beginners. They helped my love for gardening take root here in Texas and now it feels a bit like "being home" when I go there to buy my plants and mulch. I know my grandmother would be proud of the progress I have made with my yard. My yard is beautiful like hers once was. Went today & didn't appreciate being harassed about wearing a mask when the Governor has lifted the mandate. It is now their "Company Policy". It's outside, why would you require masks?
