My dinner at Buck's Fishing and Camping was the best I have had in a long time....by a long shot. This is one of the few restaurants in the area where I can truly feel that the kitchen cares about food. And what a joy that is. Although it has been around for decades, Buck's has adapted deftly to our current inflationary environment. Perhaps a luxurious dish like steak au poivre is not longer affordable? Well then, how about Burger Au Poivre? With top quality toppings creatively prepared: grilled oyster mushrooms, gruyere and white cheddar cheese, and grilled vincotta marinated onions. Oh my word. All of it was beautifully plated on a bed of cracked peppercorn sauce. Of course the meat itself was of excellent quality, perfectly cooked to order at medium rare. At $31 it is not cheap, but I think a bargain for a meal that sends you over the moon. An equivalent quality steak would have been exorbitant. We paired it with asparagus tempura (also excellent), a nice bottle of Montepulciano de Abruzzo, and for dessert, apple crisp. I also truly appreciate that the portions are generous. I can't believe I reviewed Buck's 14 years ago (!), so it's time for an update. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Over the years, I've dined there a couple times a year, and it remains a cozy, elevated spot for a date night or dinner with friends.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I almost always order the same thing: their famous lightly battered onion rings with spicy sauce and the "Big Steak" (option to get a simple salad instead of fries) cooked to medium rare perfection. My husband tried some new-to-him dishes: the fried jalapeños (he loved) and the duck pot pie (pleasantly surprised by the beautiful presentation). Service is welcoming and attentive, as always. Went for a friend's birthday and couldn't love it more. So beautiful, great service, and delicious food. For starters we got the fried green tomatoes, focaccia, and onion rings. I got the burger special which was 10/10 (the gravy sauce put it over the edge). Others at the table got the shrimp and grits, pesto pasta, and the typical menu burger. I also loved the mocktail! The appetizers for were quite tasty and well prepared. The fried oysters were a better alternative to calamari which is often served at restaurants. The onion rings had a tempura batter, light, and crispy. The pita with carrot spread was light and flavorful. The salad was very nice and would serve well as its own side dish. The basil focaccia bread was very good especially paired with the basil spread. Off to the main dishes the pork chop was very flavorful and tender. I did not mind the grill marks as they tend to overcook the outer layer when done improperly. The Cole slaw was the perfect compliment. The fish and chips with fries were light, crispy, and seasoned just right. GM Kortney provided excellent service and recommendations throughout the evening. She was very attentive and welcoming while showing immense pride in her work. I do feel Kortney helped the experience quality improve. The servers were average, everyone seated did not initially have menus to review options. The bartending speed was average; however, they did make tasty cocktails. 3.5 stars. Buck's is a very solid upscale American restaurant, with the menu on the above average price scale, expect to spend at least $100 for a couple. Our final bill was over $200 after tax and tip. The reservations were booked up online for the earlier time slots, but we tried our luck by walking in at 5:30pm, and they were able to seat us at a table. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I love the interior décor- very rustic.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We ordered one drink, one appetizer and two entrees and two desserts. Our server was attentive and had a welcoming demeanor. For the appetizer to share, I chose the carrot dip, since I didn't want any of the other fried items. The carrot dip was OK. We ordered the big steak and the soft shell crab (seasonal menu item). They were decent, but not extraordinary dishes. I feel different sides would have elevated the dishes. For dessert-we ate cherry galette ($18) and carrot cake (I was not expecting a tiny square for $16). My husband and I decided tonight was the perfect night to stay in and order delivery. We both got burgers, he had bacon on his, and I had pickled jalapeños on mine (though he stole a jalapeño slice or two and added it to his as well). The burgers were delicious. They were cooked well, any more pink I probably wouldn't have been thrilled, but I was happy with this amount. The bread bun was soft and fresh, and the cheese was nicely melted on top. The fries were also delicious. Perfectly seasoned and not too salty, with a crunch on the outside and soft on the inside. I would definitely order the burger again. The wedge salad was okay. If I'm being honest, I wouldn't order that again. I wasn't crazy about the dressing. In fact, I'm not really sure what the dressing was, but it had a little too much horseradish for me for a salad dressing. Because we didn't dine in, I can't really comment on the service or the ambience of the restaurant; however, I think we'll add this to our list for a night we are looking to go out. read more

I'm shocked there's so many bad reviews. Bucks is my one of my FAVORITE place to enjoy a dinner with good friends or on a date. I typically ask for a gin gimlet which is always great. I got the fried green tomato appetizer earlier this summer, and i do have to agree with others that it was an overpriced let down. But so many other appetizers are fantastic!! The burger gets a lot of hype but is just okay. Some days it's great and some days I'm like 'this needs a lot of condiments' The buttery quinoa dish, delicious. I love when there is halibut on the menu! Their fish and chips are also fantastic. Friends who eat meat have really enjoy the schnitzel. A party of four women had dinner there the night of March 10, 2026. They seated us, we did not ask for a specific table. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant had many empty tables. There were still empty tables when we paid the bill[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. As we talked, the manager came over and asked us to leave as there was a request for our table. There were still other empty tables for four immediately around us. The food was ok but there are lots of other options in the area which we'll explore in the future. I had a wonderful dinner earlier this week. It was a special occasion, and the waitress offered complimentary bubbles to kick off the meal, which was lovely. Then, the food. We had a seasonal tomato and burrata appetizer, the tomatoes were fresh and the vinaigrette was delish, and who can ever complain about burrata? We also had the roasted shishito peppers-a generous plate we had a hard time finishing. Blackened perfectly, the peppers made an excellent appetizer to share, and the smoky sauce was perfect. I had the trout, which was excellent. The cornmeal breading was light, crispy, seasoned well but not over seasoned. The sauce was amazing. I could eat anything with that mustard sauce. The fish didn't really need it, but I dipped anyways. My husband had a burger which he said was excellent-from what I could see it was a perfect medium rare cook. My cocktail-the campfire something or other-was smoky perfection, a perfect fall drink. I love a good bitter, smoky drink, and this didn't disappoint. Frankly, my only disappointment is that I was too full to try dessert. That's on me, though, you really don't need two appetizers here-the servings are generous. Overall, I've always had great meals here, especially when I choose from the seasonal or specials menu-it's always fresh. But it's the vibe and service which makes it excellent. Love going to Buck's on Connecticut Avenue right by Politics and Prose. The food is fantastic - much more upscale than what the "Fishing and Camping" implies. Definitely try the Carrot Dip that comes with grilled pita. Our Scallops were delicious and you get a lot with the Fish & Chips. Buck's is a great local spot and their food is delicious. Their prices are a little insane and I wish that they would correct that part of it but I realize that probably won't happen. I recently tried their special that was a duck confit and it was great. If you see that on their specials menu you must give it a try. I'll keep it simple. I'm a native Washingtonian and I frequent this beautiful neighborhood often particularly when visiting Politics & Prose. After stopping by an author appearance this week, I entered Buck's to order a couple delicious appetizers to bring home: An iceberg lettuce wedge salad, plus an order of fried green tomatoes. Total cost with tax and tip was $40 for these two appetizers. The portions were indescribably tiny. The salad was simply a quarter wedge of iceberg with bacon in the take-home package, and a small dollop of salad dressing in a container. Worse, there were only two tomato slices prepared as fried green tomatoes. Each fried green tomato was priced at $8, since the appetizer was $16. Seriously? I don't recall a more embarrassing, absurd and over-priced offering at any other Washington restaurant in my experience. read more

However, the very polite waiters tend to return to the table too frequently to ask if you are ready to order. The meal feels a bit rushed even when empty tables abound. And one "seasoned" waiter seems not to have any understanding of what items on menu are gluten free. Tip: corn is gluten free, wheat is not. Younger staff seems to have better understanding. And this a restaurant that asks in the reservation process about allergies! But it is still one of my favorite restaurants in a city of many choices. read more

We live near Buck's fishing and camping. For the first year we lived here we thought it was a store that sold outdoor items; then we realized it was a restaurant! I've been looking forward to trying it, and decided that we would finally order in (even though they have a cute patio). We ordered the fried chicken family meal. It came with 6 pieces fried chicken, mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, three flat biscuits, coleslaw, pickles, and chocolate cake. I am so sad to share that we were extremely disappointed- everything looked amazing but wasn't. The chicken, pickles, coleslaw, biscuits and mac and cheese were borderline flavorless. The mashed potatoes were okay (but they didn't come with gravy, which was weird). The only thing I would order again is the chocolate cake. Unfortunately, we don't recommend this restaurant. Walked up on this place four minutes before they opened. They requested that we wait outside for a while. Perhaps to finish pre-shift. Fine. Everything was fairly tasty. The cornmeal fried oysters were a hit with my cousin and I. The wedge salad had a tart/citrus but savory taste to it. Topped with yummy thick cut bacon. Entrees were sort of bland. I enjoyed the cauliflower purée and sprouts. However, the scallops had a rough texture to them. I'm not exactly sure why they tasted rough/dry. Usually scallops have a soft, buttery taste to them. My cousin did enjoy the lemon caper sauce. I'd say the sauce was enjoyable. We also ordered the crab cakes, please order with caution. They aren't lump crab, if you're a local. No pic because the dish did not look appetizing. Reason I'm rating this place a two is because I go to restaurants for more than ambiance. I go for food and service. The server was nice and knowledgeable. He neglected to inform me that he charged me twice after we requested a split check. My cousin paid and tipped in cash. After calling the manager tonight when I noticed, she said she couldn't find the check. I told her I can email everything to her. I asked for email address and she told me it was on the website. Second inconvenience. I went to website and there's no email address. There's nothing about this place that would make me return after the manager on duty's communication with me. For a special night out, this is a lovely spot with a terrific menu. Nice neighborhood vibe but food is tippity top. Entrees run in the $25 range so probably better to leave the kids at home. Everything I've eaten there has always been good so you're in for a treat. On a recent evening, I brought my buddy for a bachelor party of two. We sipped Manhattans while meandering down memory lane. The fish and chips are always fresh and tasty. But I'd probably say it's the wood-grilled pork chop, as I've never had a better one anywhere. The Manhattan cocktails are also very well made. When we lived down the street, we went to Buck's every Friday, but even after we moved across town we still try to visit at least once a month. I would have asked for a replacement, but no one came to the table to ask how our food was, and servers buzzed by, so couldn't get their attention for this or other requests. I went home hungry, and expected a bit thicker chop, cooked medium rare and juicy, like I get at other restaurants. I didn't want to make a fuss in front of the other people, but would not go back here. They shouldn't have this on the menu if they can't cook it properly, especially at a $25+ price point. read more

Fill up the water when it's low like everyone else. We asked for malt vinegar for the fish and chips and it turns out there was only one for the whole restaurant.
