Buck is a treasure! Over the years I've been in there for all kinds of needs for the wood stoves we have. He always seems to have what is needed in his bag of tricks! We just took a door in with cracked glass and he did a great job replacing both glass and the gasket. Then when one of the hinge pins went missing on the way home he was able to come up with a replacement! He's an old school guy who does old school quality business. read more

So far, lousy customer service. Took in to have wood stove door gasket replaced and got a damaged door back that didn't work properly. Took 2 weeks for the gasket to get replaced. Wasn't ready when they said it would be ready and they didn't call to let me know about the delay. Had to take off work to finally have someone talk to me. It wasn't ready. So far I've had to take off early 3 times from work. Came back a week later only to discover the door's working latch was replaced with an old wooden handle that didn't match. Still don't know why it got replaced and I didn't ask for it to be done nor did I say anything about it not working right. Had to take the door back because it didn't latch correctly and my fires were getting to much air. Took it back to get the door fixed. Buck keeps saying he's working on it but still haven't gotten my door back after 7 days. Now he's not answering my calls or calling me to let me know what is going on. My home is heated by this wood stove that I can't use now and it is getting cold. I just want my stove door fixed and returned. Will update with changes and hoping for the best as he does seem to have a positive reputation. Finally got a hold of Buck and I may get my door back tonight. Crossing fingers!! Let me show you my hand straight off. I've bought two stoves from Buck's Stove Palace, and the final result both times was nothing short of a beautiful, and totally functional installation. As a matter of fact, it's thirty-seven degrees outside and I'm writing this review sitting in front of my lovely soapstone wood stove I bought from Buck. But buying a stove from Buck is like getting your teeth pulled - by the Godfather. I dread calling Buck, like I dread calling the dentist; but there is never any doubt that when the subject is stoves, Buck is the guy I'm going to call. He hires help, but won't delegate authority. His many, many customers must wait to speak to the big man, while his hired help stands around looking sheepish. Once you arrive in Buck's clutter of and office, he will treat you to anecdotes while others wait. He will send you out to consider a few final details and then put you back at the end of the cue. If he really likes you, he might send you out to his warehouse to take a look at something, and you will find yourself groping your way through rubble resembling 1945 Berlin - one man's junk is another man's treasure. Once you have gone though the decision merry-go-round and arrive at a solid understanding with Buck, you might need to renegotiate half of it because he won't remember, or something else came up and it suits him not to remember. When you get angry with him; and you will get angry, he will be truly hurt and you will feel like a schmuck. I trust Buck. I trust him to treat me like a valued customer, to screw up my order, and ultimately give me more than we agreed on. We did a lot of shopping around for a wood burning stove and a gas stove and we decided to go with Buck's Stove Palace. Buck was extremely helpful in helping us picking out what we wanted/needed and we could not be happier. Buck takes an interest in every one of his customers and follows up with a phone call to make sure they are happy with their purchase. He is extremely knowledgeable and answered all our questions. It's not a fancy showplace by any means, but he has a large variety to choose from; we received the latest gas stove from Buck that we could not find in other stores. Drove down, waited while he talked with some guy he knows about NOTHING TO DO WITH HIS BUSINESS....and helper bees running all over. I waited. And waited. And waited. I don't know what I expected to find when my husband dragged me out in the rain a couple of weeks ago to go see a used pellet stove he had found. We have been trying to find something to make use of the huge basement fireplace and we thought a pellet stove might do the trick. Buck's Stove Palace. A palace it ain't, but you might just find some trinket or other that was ever so gently lifted out of a palace at one time. This place is filled wall to wall with items from all kinds of homes. I had fun just imagining where the crown molding may have come from, or the chandelier hanging so out of place in the middle of this cram-packed hodgepodge of a store, or how about the king size throne of a chair that was seated just slightly off center from the Christmas tree that had been erected on top of a hearth? And Buck? Oh, he's real. He's so very real. He has been in this business for longer than I've been alive and he doesn't mind telling you about it. I heard more stories about this customer of that century and that customer of this decade, but what I found so amusing was that Buck would frequently stop in the middle of this stories to tell you how busy he is and he won't be able to help you quite yet until he's done with this other customer. He did seem to have a helper that came in and out of the room several times. The helper tried to do what I think he was hired to do-- "help" but every time he did, Buck would tell him not to and that only Buck could do that work. Wow. The good news is that Buck is EXTREMELY knowledgeable. He knows every kind of stove and why it will work better than that and he'll even come check out your home and tell you if it will work. His housecalls are a hefty $1. I'm not going to recount what a character Buck is - other reviewers have pointed this out. You're not dealing with a corporation here - you're dealing with a quirky individual. An individual whose business practices may seem eccentric, frustrating, time-consuming, and occasionally rude. That said, Buck knows stoves. He really knows stoves. What's more, he cares that you get the right stove - he insists on visiting your home to see where you want to install it to make sure it's going to work before he will sell you one. These were provided the following day and I've been ghosted ever since. Buck and his crew offer great service, they delivered our stove and went way beyond our expectations helping us install it. They are very knowledgeable about stoves, installation and state and local building codes. Buck wrote the code for the State of Oregon EPA, which was later adopted by the State of Washington and then the federal government. We shopped around Portland and received various misinformation about what kind of stove we could not put in our alcove. Buck showed us what we could legally do and we got a beautiful stove. When I was looking for a new fire place I looked and a few stores shopping and getting a feel of what I may have wanted. At the time I was looking for a new insert. Bucks was my last stop for the day. Staff at Bucks we're very professional and asked what I had and what I was looking for and showed me exactly what I was looking for. At the end of my store visit the staff member had me speak with the owner (Buck) and set up a home visit. When buck showed up he explained what the most effective stove I needed after looking at my old fire place. Needless to say I ended up doing a remodel in the basement and bought a jotoI wood stove. Buck explained everything to me on the installation and I was surprised on how easy it was to install by myself. I bought a direct vent gas stove someplace else (oh no!) and needed help with the installation. A friend told me to go to Bucks and I am so glad I did! Not only did Buck and the crew know more than any of the other places I called, and not only were they nicer and more helpful than any of the other places - Buck got me all my information, helped me with details, gave me a tour of all the incredible antiques he has at the Palace, and wouldn't take a dime from me. If I could give Buck's stove palace 10 stars I would! They had a good selection in store and Buck guided us with expert knowledge in choosing the right one. The stove was delivered same day. I was replacing an uncertified stove using an existing flu. The first place I went to insisted on replacing perfectly good flu and charging me over $2K to do it bundling everything into the cost of the stove. I drove 4+ hours to buy my stove from this store. I knew, from my interaction on the phone, that Buck was going to be fair and his knowledge of wood stoves couldn't be beat. I showed up on a Sunday, having made an appointment due to COVID, and Buck answered all of my questions (through a mask!), plus some. If you're in a hurry- don't be. The experience of interacting with Buck is one you will not quickly forget. The days of this kind of service are sadly a thing of the past. Buck took time to understand the space I was trying to heat and how best to get a long-lasting burn that wouldn't cook me out of the room. Knowing that I lived a long distance from a hardware store, he made sure that I had EVERY screw and tube of calking that I would need for the job before I left his shop. Two weeks later, he actually called to check in, to make sure installation had gone smoothly. They don't make 'em like that anymore. I'm about to apply for the installation permit but, barring any unexpected difficulties re: codes, etc., (see Wendy S.'s review 6/14/15), my experience with Buck's Stove Palace was incredibly positive. A unique experience from beginning to end (see Douglas C.'s review 11/21/10), Buck and his staff went far out of their way to ensure I'm "one happy camper," and they now have another loyal customer for life. Buck grilled me like a sargent to drill down to what was best for my needs and then had it delivered all the way to the coast. Mike, Manager of Buck's, personally brought the stove and any backup parts they thought might be needed to ensure the installation was safe and completely legal. So, I tip my hat to everyone there and, keep in mind that, even if you're not in the market for a stove it's a great place to check out if you're in the neighborhood. Thumbs Up! read more

Walking into Buck's is taking a step back in time from the historic neighborhood building to the many antique stoves and accoutrements. They were very helpful in outlining venting for a DV stove I picked up on Craigslist and provided an assortment of parts to cover some unknown dimensions. At end of job they took back the extras and provided a refund. As noted in other reviews, a trip to the Palace is a unique experience. So relax and take it in. read more

Well we just spent a great Christmas enjoying the warmth of our new Hearthstone Tribute Woodstove, courtesy of Buck and all of the good folks at Buck's Woodstove Palace. Thank you all ! We had already done a bit of research and had pretty much decided we wanted a sopstone stove and that Buck's was who we wanted to do business with. We had visited the shop around Thanksgiving time and met Kirk, who was very helpful with ideas and felt that we were on the right track. We made an appointment to have Buck come visit us and confirm the details of our installation and to make sure we got the appropriate stove for our situation. True to form, Buck came out on a Friday evening and for the whopping sum of a glass of fresh squeezed orange juice confirmed our choice of a stove, made notes on the installation, prepared our bill of materials and finalyzed our estimate. This was, of course, in between Buck's stories of his days's as a teacher and other adventures, which were entertaing to say the least ! Before we knew it, a couple of hours had passed, and we shook hands on our woodstove deal. Buck's instincts were spot on as he described a hearth pad that he felt would work well with both our stove and our living room, and indeed this is the pad we ended up going with. The next day, Saturday, we went down and Buck had the two Hearthstone Tribute stoves he had in stock placed side by side so we could pick out the one we wanted, and then he pulled out the hearth pad he talked about the night before (from among dozens), and it was perfect. No need to look any further. We cut a check, and that afternoon the hearth pad and woodstove were delivered - Buck wanted us to have a chance to see things actually in the house before the install - a nice touch. Carson, our installer, was great. While in the midst of several other installations, and while trying to prepare for a road trip home to visit his family for Christmas, he managed to get our permit pulled and our work scheduled for later that week. Had it not been for the relentless rain he would have finished in a single day. As it was, he returned to finish during the first break in the weather. The installation came out beautiful - he is a first rate craftsman. We are very pleased with our woodstove and our experience with Buck and the rest of the folks at the Stove Palace. We value the experience that they all brought to our installation and we feel good about supporting a long-standing local business and it's employees and families. Thank you ! read more

I have to say, I'm glad I found my way to Buck's Stove Palace. My husband and I purchased a Waterford wood stove off of Craigslist and planned to install it ourselves (with the help of YouTube). Thankfully, we stopped by Buck's first and he offered to come by our house to check it out. He quickly noticed that the legs to our stove had been sawed too short to meet code and that our (Craigslist) stove pipe had likely been left out in the rain a bit too long. We decided to head down to his shop to find some replacements. As others have noted, making the trip to Buck's is an experience. I would recommend setting aside at least a few hours. Fortunately, we were more than happy to spend some time wandering around, checking out the (amazing!) basement and treasure trove of old stoves. And Buck hooked us up. We eventually got all the pipe and supplies we needed for our self-install, up to and including replacement legs for our stove (which may or may not have been won in a coin toss). Buck is definitely the guy to see if you're looking for a wood stove in the Portland area. He may get a bit distracted buying a door online or talking with his coworkers about mobility scooters while you're in his shop, but he won't let you leave his care without having everything you need for a great stove setup. read more

Where do I even began to rate Buck and his stove palace. After a house call to check out our existing fireplace Buck pointed us towards the Jotul Nordic 100 for a proper hearthmount. Buck has checked in several times to ensure a proper install and has made sure we are burning hot and happy. We bought this stove during the rainy season and had some trouble finding dry hardwood and guess who showed up with a 1/3 cord ready for purchase? How about 2 weeks later with a load of kindling? Buck himself has taken care of me on a few occasions. If you like business done the old fashioned way, where a handshake means something, buck is your guy. He went out of his way to get me the best prices on what I wanted. He gave me the information I needed to make everything work correctly. On another project, I found out I'd purchased an incorrect part online, couldn't return it, and as part of our deal, buck bought that part from me for the price I'd paid! His guys are just as knowledgeable, full of useful information. They have bent over backwards to make me happy, trusted me at my word, and done things right. If you're looking to rip Buck off, going to do installations incorrectly, or not listen to what the most knowledgeable woodstove guy in the region is telling you, perhaps your review will not be as glowing as mine. I have been doing business with Buck's for more than 20 years. I recently needed a stove and did not want to drive all the way to there store, so I went to a local stove shop... mistake on my part. When I came to my senses I went to Buck's. The customer service, knowledge, family feel was still alive and well :) I had him price out what the other shops had told me I needed (he was lower) but he told me it was not what I wanted with the information I had given him and he was correct. with the height of my home the others were rated for 13' and I needed 24'. he was still lower on cost and parts to install. Make sure you check your codes. We were told a stove was code and just insert. WRONG. Then we decided to do something else, back for more parts, WRONG parts, wrong color we needed to spray paint. Only had 3' pipe, needed 4' so we purchased a different brand, was told it would work, WRONG. We have had to go back 5-6 times and it still not installed. Do yourself a favor, purchase a new one, by the time you buy everything you need, and don't need, it adds up the same. We will NEVER purchase here again read more
