We'd been customers for over 12 years with several cars, the service used to be fantastic and fairly priced. Something has gone terribly, terribly wrong. This last experience has been horrific - please find somewhere else to go. We don't drive much and had a car worth only $5-6k. They destroyed the engine, then charged us 4k for a new one, and then the new one seized within 100 miles of driving. They then promised to "make it right" while our car sat there for months. They never did. They still owe us at least $609 (while we should have sued them for $6-8k, and still might, we got all of $700 for scrap metal for that car) and they've ignored numerous requests for payment that they'd promised me many months ago. This place is a nightmare, seriously find somewhere, anywhere, else to go. read more

Stopped into Chicago on a Friday on a road trip and wanted to hit up a couple old favorite spots, but as we were about 4 miles from the North Ave exit, the brakes in my Sequoia suddenly felt soft / spongey, and eventually my VSC / TRAC and Brake lights came on. Limped into wicker park / Bucktown, got a sandwich at Sultan's, and started calling around shops to try to find someone who could take a look ASAP as we were supposed to be in Champagne later that evening. First few shops I called said too busy, could look leave it for Monday, Could look at it Saturday, two just said 'nope can't do it'. Bucktown Auto Repair was my 5th call, and I'm so glad I tried them. Told me to come right over and he'd take a look. After sitting a bit and turning truck back on, the lights cleared and the brakes felt normal. We drove over, I introduced myself and my wife and kids sat outside eating lunch. The owner hoped in and took a quick test drive with me, then we got back to the shop and he said "let me finish up this oil change and I'll throw it on the lift and take a Quick Look" After a quick inspection we found my rear brake caliper was sticking, and he thought it was throwing an ABS code as a result. Also needed new front brake pads. He suggested I should be able to finish out the short road trip and resolve the sticking caliper when we got home. Very grateful he took the time to look my truck over and give me peace of mind to be able to finish our trip and get the repairs done when we got home instead of have to leave the truck and get a rental, or be stuck in Chicago longer than we'd planned. Do NOT book a U-Haul through this location. I had a mobile pickup submitted, confirmed with a U-Haul representative, and had confirmation in the app. I showed up to pick up the truck at the reservation time, no truck, the place was closed. Had to sit on the phone with U-Haul for an hour and the shop simply did nothing they were supposed to do to be ready for the reservation. read more

I dropped off my infiniti for headlight and fog light installation, (provided bulbs) after several days and multiple visits, they "accidentally scratched my car" and had the nerve to mention "what happened to here?". Also, come to find out from a dealer visit later, they damaged the housing of the headlight upon installation which required a completely new headlight console. I wouldn't take any car for even the smallest of repairs or installations here. Avoid! read more

Moved to Chicago in December. Being new to the city, I needed to find a mechanic to service my 2004 Forester. I turned to Yelp. My criteria included reputation, price, and proximity to my neighborhood. Service needed was a standard oil change. I called two days before bringing it in to see if I needed an appointment. I was told, since my car only needed an oil change, that an appointment wasn't necessary. I took my car in on a Monday morning, right as they opened. The employee working in the office was quite kind. He said it might be a bit of a wait because his staff wasn't in yet. He then sat before me a bowl of bracelets, as if giving a peace offering for my wait. I obliged. I immediately felt magical and cool, like I could high-five angels. I walked across the street to the coffee shop on the corner. Excellent. After 1.5 hours, I made my way back to my car. My car was ready. A different employee talked to me this time, and he had a laundry list of things, totaling $1,000, that needed to be done to my car. I said thanks, but no thanks. Paid $40 for the oil change and left with my new bracelet giving me a new source of strength. The customer service was just okay. My car is running fine a week after getting the oil change which is a good sign. Go for the bracelet. read more

I live right up the street from this location and they were super helpful when my car battery died. They came to jump my car which helped get it over to their shop to get my battery replaced. Since I used them for my battery, the jump ended up being free (otherwise I think its $35 if your battery ends up being okay). Since then, I've gotten my brake pads replaced here and have had a good experience. They seem to be priced fairly and overall the staff is pleasant to work with. They seem to have a lot of business as cars are constantly turning over in their parking lot, but there aren't a lot of people in the waiting room. They're near a lot of cute coffee shops and they work pretty quickly. They're also close to the damen blue line and the ashland and north ave busses. This is the place I think I'll be bringing my car anytime I have issues. read more

I finally got my car fixed at another mechanic. They told me that the rotors were not changed when the brake pads were changed. It cost me another $900 but the brakes are fixed now. I live close this shop and today SUNDAY was the first time I've gone there. I went in because one of my wipers was not working, turned out it was a screw that was loose and Wow the guys not sure of their names but they were very nice and within 5 minutes they fixed it. As I'm getting my money to pay they said don't worry it was a simple fix and no need to pay. At that point i felt I should break something else so that can charge me because i felt bad and they were really nice. Well I found a auto repair shop for life. Loyalty is hard to find especially with auto shops but this 2 gentleman have my respect for being honest and I will be going back whenever I need something fixed. After already spending a painful three hours at the DMV changing my license plate and ID to Illinois, I discovered that the back screws to remove my old plates and replace with new ones were severely rusted. I had to get my breaks repaired because they sounded squeaky. I was very concerned that my car would not make it another week, so I rushed over to Budget Auto Repair. They were the only service near me that was open late (until 7:00 P.M.) I walked in with a skeptical face thinking it's just another auto repair shop, but I was fantastically surprised by the quality of the professionals here who told me they would stay late to fix my car. They offered me a quote for the brake pads, stating that their parts were better than the junk parts you get for cheap and break down easily. I eventually decided to trust their workmanship; I was very happy after the brake repair was done because the squeakiness vanished, and they fixed the job in the time-frame they promised; indeed, they are men of their word. I also appreciate that they're funny and nice. Basically, if you're looking for high-quality workmanship along with nice people who keep their word, then I say go here! Please beware. Had car in for brake job. Had to return once for bad squeak. Was told they pads were incorrectly greased and person that had worked on my car "had been fired" because he didn't know what he was doing. Got car back after being "fixed" and the. Brakes were rattling. Couldn't trust shop again so took it to a different shop. Told there that the caliper retaining clip was never put back on and that "whoever did brake job did a bad job" Called shop to ask for labor refund. Was argued with and told "need to ask boss" Never called back. Not going to bother pursuing over $180 but will never come back and warn others. Saw a similar post on Bucktown forum about a botched brake job in which it caused a major safety issue. Destroyed the engine of my car. My car should have ran another year or two but due to their lack of expertise and bad repairs the car stopped running. One "supposed" fix we drove the vehicle away and within a few blocks lost all power steering after a hose in the wrong place was melted. This caused fluid to explode everyone in the engine as well. They did not clean it up thoroughly. A few days after that my battery was drained by part of this poor repair job and it took 2 hours to get them to come out give me a jump and them try to blame it on me. This place is understaffed and does not know what they are doing. They make it appear they are trying to make it right but are not actually doing that. Also, they park your car on the side streets illegally and our car was ticketed. No one informed us this happened until we went into our glove box and found the ticket hiding there. We had to go back to the manager and he gave us money for the ticket. read more

I own a Toyota Prius. This establishment advertised that it can fix hybrid issues. I took it in at the beginning of January and took the bus to work, thinking it would be fixed when I got it back. Instead, I called every few days to check up on it, only to be told that "their hybrid guy" did not arrive. This went on for a month, and the reason I didn't pick up my car sooner was because I was hospitalized after getting sick using the CTA so often to get to work 20 miles away. I showed up only to find that my brake system wasn't fixed, they left my car sitting with a block of snow on it in the corner of their parking lot, and could not put back a piece of my rear air ventilation where they were doing their work. instead they replaced the small battery, and charged me $300. I cannot speak for non-hybrid vehicles, but the organizational character displayed from my situation informs me never to go here again. I highly insist that you, the reader, do the same. Don't be fooled if the owner tries to respond to this review, they're terrible, and I only went to them out of desperation. Never again. read more

I ABSOLUTELY, UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES would take my car here for anything other than routine maintenance. I took my 2006 Acura RSX here after having it inspected at the dealership. The dealership found it needed a new timing chain and water pump, along with a valve adjustment. I contemplated selling the car but decided it was worth repairing. The dealership estimated labor at $1,300. Bucktown Auto inspected the car and came to the same conclusion. I was surprised when they would not budge on price, offering to perform the work along with replacing break pads for $1,100 (not including any parts, which I purchased directly from the dealership.) When trying to understand the estimate, I asked for a breakdown of the labor hours and rate I was being charged. No details were provided. Instead, the man on the phone insisted that I was getting a fair price. Seeing all the fabulous yelp reviews, I decided to go for it. BOY WAS THIS A MISTAKE. They had my car for almost two weeks after stating it only required 8 hours of work. In that time, they had been completely uncommunicative. Every time I called to ask about the status of the car, nobody would know. They would consistently say they would call me back. I was never called a single time from this mechanic shop. Instead, I kept calling every day to receive regular non-updates. I started to wonder if they even had my car in their possession since everyone was so confused every time I called. Finally, I called and miraculously the car was "ready for pickup". When I arrived, I was asked to pay and given my keys. I started my car and immediately noticed a sound coming from the engine. A tech checked it out and agreed there was an irregular sound. The older man whom I had unfortunately just paid came out and treated me like an idiot because I am a petite, young female. What could I possibly know about cars? He stated he would drive it around the block to see if the noise would go away. He drove my car, mind you with me in it, very aggressively disregarding all the rules of the road, barely avoiding several collisions. Then he attempted to tell me the noise was gone when it absolutely wasn't (was just being slightly muffled by car traffic). Finally, he agreed the noise was there and said they would take another look. He offered for one of the mechanics to drive me home. Since I had wasted almost an hour there and had a hungry pup at home, I reluctantly accepted the offer. During the drive home, the mechanic told me he was the one who had worked on my car. He assured me there was no noise from the engine the last two days--that's nice since there clearly is today. Then he told me he thinks the repair he made was stupid and that I should have replaced the entire engine. He also told me that car repairs are always a risk and that you never actually know what is wrong with the car. He told me, "you could have returned the Acura parts, but now you can't since we've already used them." Gee, thanks--that's extremely helpful. Finally, he suggested that "maybe [I] should sell the car." I was enraged while also trapped in this man's car. I told him I would have sold it had I known I would be paying $2,000 for it to not be fixed. After having my car for TWO MORE WEEKS, I picked it up and still was not confident with the repair. I took it back to the Acura dealership-- they inspected the work and found that Bucktown Auto had not properly performed the valve adjustment and also had left corroded parts in performing their "repair." I paid another $1,200 at the dealership but at least now I didn't feel like my car was going to break down every time I got in it. To make matters even worse. when I paid at Bucktown Auto, they could not print me a receipt or invoice because the printer was supposedly broken. I have emailed and called countless times and still am unable have them perform this basic task. I find this place to be entirely unprofessional and incompetent when it comes to major repairs. I stop here to change the motor oil of my car and my car was the next to motor oil change, the first car owner wait around 45 minutes to take his car for the same change motor oil and in my car was a little more of 40 minute. I thought I had received good service here, but it appears I was deceived. About a month ago, I came to Bucktown Auto as a first-time customer for an oil change ($25) and a windshield wiper replacement ($15). I took special care to verbally confirm with the mechanic that all the fluid levels had been checked/topped off and left feeling satisfied. One month later, I had a family friend who is an auto mechanic take a look under the hood at an unrelated problem. He checked all the fluid levels for me and, strangely enough, the windshield wiper fluid, engine oil, and coolant were all low. It was at this point that I took a closer look at my $15 one-month-old replacement windshield wiper and noticed that it was already falling apart. It looked like someone had used it to fend off a velociraptor (I'm not saying this didn't happen, but I have not seen any velociraptors in Wicker Park in the past month). Needless to say, I'm disappointed in the service I received here and will not be returning. Thankfully, there is no shortage of auto repair places in this neighborhood. Very friendly and hardworking! Brought in my Honda CRX to get some work done (A/C hose leak and rear suspension). Took about 5 days for everything to get done, but when I picked up the car the rear suspension sounded even worse. I called and told them about this, they had me bring it back and apparently something else broke when they were fixing it. They had me leave the car there another 2 days (needed to order parts) to fix the issue at no charge! One small complaint is that they don't ever call to let you know the status of when your car is ready, so you have to make sure to call and check-in. Not a major problem, it seems like they are really busy all the time, but a call would be nice. Overall I think they are fairly priced, honest, and very polite! read more

My daughter recently had to switch license plates, and, while she is a very capable young adult, she called me to ask me what to do because, one of the screws was too rusty to remove with a screwdriver alone. It was completely stripped. I hastily said, IDK... maybe a gas station can help. She drove to Bucktown Auto works, and the guys came out and helped her right away, completely free of charge!! Knowing that there are such helpful mechanics makes a mom feel comfy. I know she will go back for any minor problems in the future. I was absolutely floored by the service I received when I discovered this gem. It all started when my muffler fell from my car so to hold it up until I could take it to a proper mechanic, I ghetto-fabulously used a hanger to sustain it long enough to reach Bucktown Auto Works. I went here because my mom told me they were good people and that back in the day my dad used to do their taxes. Anyhow I digress. They lifted the car and noted the muffler wasn't damage, but just needed a bolt to lock it In place so minutes later my car was ready to go. When I asked how much? Alex said no charge! I was no doubt surprised by the kind gesture. A week later I started have issues with the belt of my car and basically had I pull over and park the car in lincoln square. When I called Alex, he said not to worry and he had the car towed to his shop, and when he called me he gave me the low-down on what was going on and prices, which were reasonable! I'm in grad school and live pretty simply so any money that goes to my car mean less to groceries, but this needed to be done because I'm in nursing school and need a car to drive to clinicals etc... two days later, my car was ready to go and when I got there, turned out he fixed the inner door handles of my car!! He said, he wouldn't let his daughter drive in a car with broken indoor handles and that it wasn't safe. So it was his gift to me. Talk about an angel from heaven taking care of me. I'll be back here for everything under the sun and will definitely recommend this place to my friends. After many trips to random mechanics, i have officially found a place I can trust, with people who have my best interest and who aren't all about taking advantage of the mechanically challenged. read more

They operate a small store on the corner of Paulina/North Ave. If you're looking for mechanics, you want to choose someone that's trustworthy. In terms of their price, I think they are super fair. I haven't shopped around various mechanics so I can't really compare their price. However, I would rather choose a mechanic that's trustworthy than go to a mechanic that's the cheapest, b/c in the long run, a cheap mechanic is gonna mess up your car even more which = more repairs in the future. read more
