I've been going to another auto shop for many years, but when I recently started having some electrical issues with my car, they were unable to fix it after looking at it on two separate occasions. I then took it to another shop, and they told me they also couldn't fix it, and directed me to Reliable Auto Repair Center. I was impressed when I called Reliable and the man I spoke with was confident he could fix it. The first time I brought my car in I had to leave immediately and bring it back the following day, because I was told they wouldn't be able to look at it until then (there were a ton of cars outside and they don't take appointments: first come, first served). I dropped it off the next morning and by early afternoon I had a diagnostic report and estimate. They also found a few other issues with the car and fixed everything for me by the next day. Communication was great, every person I interacted with was professional and kind, the cost was reasonable, and best of all my car finally works properly again. I have been going here for years and they used to be exactly what their name said "Reliable". The last few years I would come in for a simple repair, get quoted a reasonable price. Then after a number of phone calls, my price would almost always quadruple and the problem would never be fixed. The last time I paid almost $4k for some suspension work and it was never repaired. After bringing back 4x's I thought it might be the tires. After paying over $1k for new tires it still wasn't fixed. I finally just took it to a Midas shop and after 15 minutes and $50 my car ran good as new. I'm not sure if these people are crooks or just completely incompetent but don't bring your car here! read more

Was loyal to here for many years but had a bad experience. Took the car in for brake pads and other standard repairs. They had my car several days and claimed all was finished after a high price tag. Turned out that they never replaced the brake pads. A simple repair ended up being a week without my car and hundreds in ubers to compensate. I can't recommend this place high enough. I had the pleasure of working with the owner, Andy. He's just gained a life long customer. I have a "new" Porsche 2020 Cayenne. I bought it knowing it needed the major service interval, as well as $4k of other work the dealership said needed done. I called Reliable Auto and explained what I needed done. The person who answered told me to wait a moment. Andy, the owner, took the call. He told me how the dealership was trying to upsell me and the car absolutely didn't need a number of their recommendations. I took the car in the next morning. He ran diagnostics, examined the car, and confirmed what he had told me. A lot of the service was absolutely not necessary at this time. He identified work that will need to be done in the future, but at no point pushed me to do it immediately if I didn't want to. He even pushed me against doing it now, given it wouldn't be cost effective given the lack of immediate need. Even better, for the work that did need done immediately, he searched for an aftermarket part that would cut my cost with no impact on performance. I usually despise getting my cars' serviced. I don't know cars well & have had no choice but to take the mechanics word when I'm told something needs to be done. I tend to leave feeling like I was probably ripped off, but am not knowledge enough to be certain. For the first time, I leave having my car serviced feeling like I had a real advocate working with me. Andy seemed to truly care about me, about saving me money, fixing my car in a cost effective manner, and while identifying things that will need work in the near future (brake pads & spark plugs, for instance), at no point did he try to push me to do it now. I have now moved to a south west neighborhood and continue to make the trek to them. This past week my car had major issues and they were incredible. I can't say enough good things about Reliable Auto Center, where I had to bring my car relatively recently. I had to get my car towed and several other places in the area were very full and said they couldn't see my car for a few days. One of them referred me to this business, which ended up being a complete blessing. When I called them, they said I could bring the car in that day and they would see it tomorrow. By the time my car got towed, it was very close to the store's closing time. Traffic set us back a bit past closing time so I called them to let them know. They offered to stay slightly later so someone could be there when my car arrived, which was really kind and considerate of them. The next day, they called me by mid-afternoon (as they promised) to tell me what work was needed, the price, and when I could pick the car up. I was so impressed that they were able to check the car out so soon, their rates were very reasonable and fair, and that I could pick up my car just a few hours later. Car issues are a huge pain and a major headache, but Reliable Auto made the experience less awful and the business is true to its name. They are certainly reliable and very fair. Hopefully I won't have many other car issues, but I will absolutely bring my car back here if it needs anything. read more

These guys are crooks! Ii came to Reliable Auto to fix the squeaky brakes on my Audi. They charge me $780 to replace the brakes and rotors. 2 weeks later they were squeaking again. They told me it was an issue with the model and they couldn't help, then charged me for the visit. 6 months later the brakes were still squeaking and I took them to another auto shop. They told me (and showed me) that Reliable had put on used brakes and rotors. I had to pay another $800 for new ones. Horrible experience. Will never go again. read more

Frustrating update. In my original review, I mentioned the necessity of asking for Bob. In the time since, many of the original, old-school mechanics have left Reliable. In their wake are a younger crew who, to my estimation, do not share the work ethic and skill of their older counterparts. Or, just the ethics. I stopped in to get a part so that my windshield wipers would work. I also asked to get my fluids changed and my tires checked before heading on the road. In a couple of days, I received a call that my car was ready. My invoice noted labor, cost of the part and tax. Fine. A couple of days later, I'm driving to the south side when a big rain storm pops up. 'No worry," I think, "I'll just use my windshield wipers." They don't work. As I am driving down LSD S, in a rainstorm, my wipers THAT I JUST PAID PARTS, LABOR AND TAX for don't work. Grace of God, I don't die or kill anyone else. I call Reliable, livid. My response, "Oh, we jimmied the part. If you want it to work right, bring it back in and we'll work on it for free." Wait. Seriously, wait. Did you just tell me that despite charging me for a part, labor and tax you actually did the kind of work on my car that I could have done? And you charged me for a part you never included? Is that what you just told me??? I kept it together, knowing that I needed to get the work done without retribution. Two attempts at picking up my car at the designed time later, I had my vehicle -- without charge. But, the damage was done. They handed my car over with zero apologies. If you don't care, why should I? If you are going to admit to swindling me, why would I ever come back or tell others to come back? If being a long-time customer means nothing, why would I ever patronize your garage? But, it gets better. Within two weeks (and, admittedly, to the surprise of no one at this point), those fluids I had checked? Yeah, didn't happen. I had to add oil and antifreeze to my car. And, the rough & rugged husband of my one my best friends added air to all four of my tires, since it hadn't been done. Glad they charged me for it. read more

It doesn't get much more frustrating than getting a flat tire on your way to work in sub zero temperatures. Pulled into the closest auto body shop - Reliable, with a bad attitude and was quickly put at ease. Andy showed me the tire, explained what happened and gave me some options to replace the tire, including buying some cheap used tires to get me through the rest of winter, to avoid damaging brand new tires with the awful city potholes. This option saved me about $200 in tires, though he was happy to sell me new tires if I wanted them. I spent an hour and a half there (busy morning) and was charged only $70 for replacing of 2 tires with good quality used tires. I got lucky when I didn't have a choice of where to go, and would recommend Reliable when you do have a choice. read more

Reliable gave me an estimate of $805 to replace the rear control arms on my Honda Element including an alignment. I've been happy with their work in the past but they must be used to dealing with yuppies who pay to have their groceries delivered. What they claimed was a difficult, full day job took me 2 hrs to do in my garage with hand tools. The parts cost $120 and would've cost as low as $65 if I hadn't bought top of the line parts. The guys over at Tuffy recommended Reliable Auto. My back brakes were completely shot. The rear right brake pad had completely worn out and it was scratching metal on metal making a horrible noise while I drove. They got me in at 7am when they opened, diagnosed the problem immediately and called me with the next steps. My car was done by 1pm. They could not have been nicer or more efficient. They're a great local shop. I've brought my car in a couple times. First for an oil leak, which they were able to fix quickly. I brought the car in the morning and it was ready after noon. The second time was when I replaced my car battery. I ended up shearing off the head of a bolt for the battery hold down. I tried drilling a starter hole and had a screw extractor, but didn't have much luck. I brought the car in and they fixed it up; brought it in the morning, fixed after noon! This happened during COVID-19 and they were following every precaution as well!! I'm happy to have this shop in the neighborhood! read more

I came here recently after seeing great reviews on yelp and it didn't hurt that it was close to my house. I needed a new side view mirror because a car side swiped my car when it was parked on the street. I called them and they ordered it and had it within 2 days and I waited 35 minutes to have it installed. I called nearby shops for a quote for the part and they were at least $50 cheaper. Most auto shops would take awhile and ask you to come back but this place really wants to fix it and make sure you aren't waiting long. I hope I don't have any more issues with my car but if I do, I know I have a go to place. read more

This place was so helpful!! I had a flat tire on a very cold day in Chicago. After contacting roadside service I was told there were very long wait times for assistance. I was with a friend and we decided to drive (I know, not the best idea) 4 blocks on a very flat tire. I was having car troubles last month and this place was actually recommended by the guys at Tuffy's on Diversy because they were too backed up with work. I had a coolant leak and the engine was smoking as I pulled in. The building looks like it's seen better days, but the business and the staff are straightforward and helpful. They told me they would call with an estimate once they checked it out. I got the call within an hour, and they told me exactly what was wrong with it and broke down how they came up with the estimate. I've now taken my car here twice, in a week, and both times had a problem the first time I drove it after picking it up. I initially dropped it off because I was having problems starting it randomly and had to jump it already once or twice. The battery was less than a year old, so I had my doubts that was the problem. I picked it up the next day after they "tightened" the connections on the underbody. I was a little suspicious that was the problem. I was right. The first time I drove it, the car proceeded to stop accelerating while driving on Belmont and completely turned off. (At least I wasn't on Lakeshore???). The car wouldn't start the first few tries and once it finally started I drove back to Reliable. Mostly because I had been on my way to the airport and the car had died about 2 blocks from the shop. This time, they figured out I needed a new fuel injector. Great. Just great. Well now I have a new fuel injector but the car overheated the first time I drove it. The radiator is less than 2 months old as I replaced it over the summer. I'm sorry but I can't trust people who have twiced worked on my car with problems resulting immediately after pick-up. Oh they also did not give me credit for the $45 worth of labor they did on the first drop off for tightening the "connections". Will probably be reporting to the BBB and just be happy I haven't wrecked the car completely as a result of their inattentiveness. EDIT: So my car continues to have problems starting. A new mechanic told me there's absolutely no reason why this problem would be caused by the fuel injector because it would start anyway and just run shakily on less of the fuel injector. read more

My car had been making a weird noise for a few months and I had been putting off getting it checked out for far too long. Procrastination is a serious fault of mine. Of course, after driving it anyway for months and at the climax of a particularly weird and uncalled for argument with a passenger, the check engine light comes on. When it rains, it pours. He was very kind to me as it was obvious that I had been crying--he must have thought I was upset about the car--and reassured me that it was probably nothing serious and not to worry. I called this afternoon to get the diagnosis and Andy gave me the rundown. I dont know what car repairs should cost but the price seemed fair--I had expected to have to pay more. Andy had the car ready for me by the end of the day! I was impressed with how quickly it was finished. I cant say if I got screwed or not, but I feel like I was treated well and I dont feel like I paid too much. I drive a Mercedes with ton-o-miles on it. It used to be that I would nearly cry from the cost of any repairs. I was told to go to reliable. The cost of my repairs have been cheaper than what I would have expected from anywhere. They are the most honest people I have ever dealt with in auto repair. I walked in and mimicked a noise the car was making and Andy knew right off the bat what it was. I neglected the "check engine" light for almost a year because 3 other places told me $1200 to replace the WHOLE sensor. Andy told me he could replace it, but it's only a $100 casing that needs to be fixed. I would have never known if he told me the same thing. I have been taking my cars here for synthetic oil changes for years, but no longer. I always blow off how unfriendly they are, I overlook the fact they only list 5000 miles on the sticker until the next synthetic oil change (should be 10k min between changes), but today they charged me $18 for extra oil on top of the $68 oil change cost. Hmm, why the extra charge? "We haven't been charging for the cost of oil as much as we should have, but with oil going up we need to start accounting for that." Ahh I see, so all of a sudden I need to pay almost 30% more without a heads up? I dropped off a 2015 Lexus...any chance you figured I'd just sign the bill and not care? The guy made comments at drop off and pick up about how nice a car it is. Look out y'all, I don't know if their $18 extra fee is just for me or now the norm for everybody, but either way the price has become so high I can no longer tolerate the experience.
