Extremely frustrating experience. Jeff called just 30 minutes before our scheduled pickup to tell us there were no trucks available. By that point, we had already reserved building elevators and arranged both loading and unloading crews--everything was set. His only suggestion was to call the Budget 800 number. I did, and they said they'd call back within 4 hours if they could find a truck. It's now been over a day, and I've heard nothing. Thankfully, Penske came through at the last minute and we were able to scramble and get the move done--but it was unnecessarily stressful. Of course with crazy gas prices I opted for the pre-fuel, but found a better price and re-fueled myself. They also DID NOT scan my vehicle in when I returned it and I was recieving text messages 3 days later saying I had not returned the car. When they finally updated the system that it was returned on the correct day, they charged me $150 dollars for a the truck that I already refueled!!! I am still going back and forth with them about the charges as of right now! They are telling me to show reciepts but I paid $100 of it with cash and $26 on my card. I HAVE NEVER NEEDED TO SHOW GAS RECEIPTS IN THE 25 YEARS I HAVE BEEN RENTING CARS. They are trying to tell me there is nothing they can do without proof...BS computers do what humans tell them to do. DO NOT RENT FROM HERE. The staff, specifically the older guy at the counter, are unbelievably rude and obnoxious. They have absolutely zero interest in whether you get a truck or not- it isn't their problem as far as they're concerned, it's Budget's problem. And they don't work for Budget, so they could not care less about the quality of their services. So, if anything goes wrong, they will simply give you the budget corporate number and tell you to buzz off. I reserved a truck almost 2 weeks in advance to no avail. No explanation, no suggestions, just a phone number to call. The silver lining of my experience is that I was forced to rent from somewhere else and did not have to deal with these clowns any further. From what I can tell based on these reviews, many of the people who did actually got a truck were scammed. This is not surprising at all. Having just left yet ANOTHER tire shop, I thought it was time to write this review. Where to begin? A few days into our trip we noticed two things. First, the rear driver's side tire had low pressure. No problem! We stopped and got some air thinking that would be the end of it. Second, it began to rain and we discovered that the windshield wipers on both the front and rear windows were old and did little to nothing to help. We had already noticed at certain times a day just how dirty the inside of the windshield was and found an old hair tie hanging from the wiper controls so we were quickly becoming unimpressed with our rental and decided to call and find a solution. We were told by the person on the line to drive to the Flint, MI airport and they would exchange our car. Great, we thought. Just a little detour and we'll be back on the road. After spending about 45 minutes trying to get things sorted at Flint, we were informed that the person at the call center had never opened a ticket about the problem and the Flint, MI airport had no cars to give us. Now we were told to backtrack to the Saginaw, MI airport for the exchange. Next, after backtracking an hour to Saginaw, we were told that they would not have anything larger than a compact for us until after 4:00pm. It was now around 1:00 pm. Furthermore, the employee said that they had told the national phone line person that, but apparently they chose to omit that detail before we wasted more of our day. Not having time to wait, nor being able to fit ourselves and our luggage into a compact, we were forced to continue our journey with a leaky tire and useless windshield wipers. Now we continue to waste vacation time stopping at tire centers for air and rain is predicted for the next two days. We did call the national office once again after our Saginaw experience. At that time "their system was down" and they couldn't do anything to help us find a solution to the problem. Therefore, we stop at least daily to fill up the tire. If it rains hard the next two days, we may be forced to buy wiper blades for our rental car. Did I mention that Budget should check the brakes on this car? This is undoubtedly the worst rental car experience we've ever had. The car wasn't clean and is obviously poorly maintained. Customer service has been nonexistent, and we've lost many hours of precious vacation time trying to solve the problem. I just hope we can end this trip safely. read more

Customer service at the Midway rental car lot is nonexistent!!! I have flown into Midway over a dozen times this year and it never fails; looooong wait times, unprofessional employees, who use their positions to fill spaces. No work ethic, just a hurry up and wait attitude from virtually EVERY EMPLOYEE. I cannot wait for AI to take over these positions. This is just a PSA to NEVER use Budget or the American Airlines discount for a moving truck when you move. I never make posts like this but I am at my wits end. They have committed fraud, and extorted me for my wallet. They gave me a truck in Chicago with a black piece of tape over the check engine light, a stolen catalytic converter replaced with a pipe, and the wheel barring's were shot. After over 4 days of them going back and forth, and then actually losing their own truck that that made ME track down, I got a replacement. The replacement wasnt good either, and the wheel shook the entire drive, but I was so desperate I drove it anyways. I left my wallet in the truck due to being exhausted from having to drive all night to return it in time since the people I had to help me move and clean over the weekend were no longer available on a weekday. (I have a bruised tailbone and a herniated disk) The woman at the return location told me if I didn't bring a card for them to charge over $230 on top of the $570 they already charged me, I could not get my wallet back. Upon threatening to show up with the police I got my wallet. I've spent over a week calling them to no end, received no receipt or any compensation as I was promised, and they won't return my calls. I didn't even get a copy of my new contract or my file as I have requested numerous times. This is the worst customer service I have ever had in my entire life. Please do not use them. They just made my account negative when I'm already living on only workmans comp income at this time. I know there are many negative reviews, but I wanted to leave a positive review (and it made me SO overly stressed before our already stressful move seeing all of the negative ones). We rented a 16 foot truck for our one way move from this location. We called the month and week prior to confirm they had our reservation. We arrived at the time of our reservation and the truck was available. The attendant was very through with our walkthrough of the truck and pointed out existing damage to our truck. We got the truck and furniture pads in a timely manner and we were on our way. While the truck was older (170k miles and crank windows with limited AC), it was very reliable and we had no issues with it and got all of our things to where we needed to go with no problem. The storefront is a bit tucked away (and a bit odd - it's a thrift store??), but worth using in Chicago if needed. I would read the other negative reviews with a grain of salt, as it feels like the people who leave comments had a very bad experience and isn't necessarily reflective of every experience. Rose, Jeff, and the rest of the team were great. I booked directly through Budget and was easily able to modify my reservation to get a bigger truck when it was time to pick up. I called in advance to make sure they had a bigger truck available and there was no hassle about switching the reservation out. Rose and Jeff were both great on the phone. Because I had planned to pick up the truck the day before our load, I was initially worried about where I would park it in my neighborhood. But Rose helped me out immensely by letting me park the truck out on the street in front of the business over the weekend. My experience was nothing like the low rated reviews here. But I understand moving is stressful, and when there's stress, mistakes and miscommunications happen, so maybe that explains other peoples' experiences. Also, folks on the staff (especially Jeff) all have pretty dry senses of humor (which I like) so maybe if you thought they were rude it was because you didn't realize there was a joke in the air. There is more and I wished I had looked at the other reviews before booking. I have to add she seemed to very friendly to non blacks... to the point the original person she was speaking to about us questioning why the truck we reserved isn't available was a non black and she had another customer while we were checking out she was as professional as she could be to her. Truly awful. I reserved a truck two months in advance, confirmed my reservation three days before my move, and got a call 10 hours before pick up saying there is no truck for me. Eventually they told me I could have a 12' (reserved 16'), but two hours after my reserved pick up. I was given a truck with the check engine light on and no gas cap. The check engine light is "no big deal, very minor. Our trucks are checked every 5000 miles". Halfway through our drive the dashboard lights up like a Christmas tree. DO NOT GO HERE. It is worth any price to rent a truck elsewhere. My husband reserved a truck at the Budget on Western, which does not exist any longer. It rerouted him to this location, which he only found out after a 45-minute bus ride and multiple phone calls to the corporate line. Thank god he cabbed it over to Elston because Budget Elston didn't order enough trucks and lost the key to what was meant to be our truck - the last one on the lot. The guy in line behind us was told he had to wait another 6.5 hours for a truck. Our own was over two hours late, which was awesome when we were trying to get on the road for a out-of-state move. They wouldn't give us a discount for this awful service - they could only offer is free lock and dolly rental (items we had already bought for the move because it cost nearly the same as to rent them through Budget). It was in a weird, hard to get to spot, and inside a little glass shop, but I absolutely loved the ladies there. I walked in and they were bickering at each other as if they were family, and the one lady that helped me was SO sweet. But they made me chuckle, and even though it took some time to get going, I enjoyed looking around the shop as I waited. Don't trust this place. I dropped off my rental truck here after a long, costly, and difficult move due to Budget's screw ups on my reservation. I filled up the truck with gas just before coming into the city and left the car at the center after hours with the keys in the box. They are now trying to charge my card a ridiculous amount of money for gas, which is unfounded given I just filled up. Unfortunately I did not take a picture of the gas tank, so I plan to dispute with my credit card agency. This is straight stealing...no other way to put it. read more

No Stars if it was an option. The owner (Dennis) rents me a truck that he says he 'knows like the back of his hand.' Truck breaks down during the move. I wait 4 hours for serviceman to show up, tow the truck and take me back to Budget. Budget customer service tells me that there will be another truck waiting for me when I arrive. No truck. Dennis claims he doesn't know that the truck he gave me broke down. Apparently he's not a hands-on owner of his business or in communication with the corporate office. Then he kicks me out of his shop because he's closing in 2 minutes... It's pouring rain outside and I couldn't finish my move that day. Did I mention that I was quoted a rate of $75/ day and $0.25 cents per mile?- My card is charged over $325 for a cumulative 27 mile move. Liars, thieves and cheats. They charged me $100 extra for cleaning fee after I returned a truck, and when I called them for explanation, they told me it was not about cleaning, but because the truck blocked the entrance. If I could give 0 stars I would but that's not an option. For starters I called to confirm my reservation and was told I needed to pick up my truck a day earlier than planned. When I started to ask a question a man yelled at me over the phone "listen to me when I'm talking to you and hung up on me." I called back to complain and the same man answered the phone pretending it wasn't him and said he was sorry and brushed it off. I switched locations because I refuse to do business with someone who has no customer service skills. When I switched locations they called me back after switching to the Skokie location which said they had 12 ft trucks online when I booked online. I was called and told they only have vans instead of trucks and to either use a van or go back to my original location to pick up a truck and that they would switch my reservation over for me. It was the day before I was supposed to pick up the truck. When I called to confirm my reservation at the correct location they had not done it and had closed for the day leaving me no choice but to drive there get switched over etc. When I told them about the situation they offered no remorse for the mess that had been made nor any compensation for the lack of customer service. AND now that the move is over I had an additional $75 charge for a "no show" in a city I was even in and my truck was returned early. I will never use budget again. Horrible. I'm going to keep this simple. They quoted me a $20 reservation fee and an additional $0.79 a mile (I went 35 miles). I also paid the required $16 insurance and the $10 taxes. I should have only paid $77. They charged me $217. I called Budget corporate and the customer service rep told me the that they charged me a $60 reservation fee as well as some random $100 charge. DO NOT RENT FROM THIS DEALER. To make a long, irritating story short, the truck we rented was an absolutely wreck. In the drawing where they circle pre-existing damage to the vehicle, they literally had just circled the whole truck. To top it off, it was so filthy that we had to put towels down in the cab so our clothes and personal items wouldn't get ruined. But the real kicker is that they didn't mention there is a $1+ per mile fee. We took the truck to Michigan. So instead of spending ~$300, we spent ~$1000. When I called Customer Service to complain, their solution is that they will tattle on the dealer for us to the district manager (whose name they will not share). Maybe he'll reprimand the dealer and maybe he'll contact me to let me know what happened or whether they are willing to offer us something in the interest of customer service. DO NOT USE THE COMPANY/LOCATION!!!!! If only I had looked on yelp prior to reserving a truck through them for my move from Chicago to Michigan... It starts out the same as the other stories, I go to the nonexistent address that is posted online and given to you with your reservation at 9am to pick up my truck, at a non-existent place on Western off Peterson only to call and very rudely be told that is not their address, they do not currently have any trucks and I can pick up a truck across town at their Elston location at 12. Completely exasperated, I call Uhaul to try and set-up a last minute rental, I'm told they have one and all my problems are solved! Well until after waiting an excruciatingly long time in line at this one shop and once again am VERY rudely told there is no truck, despite the confirmation I had received. So I head back to Budget (Moving Chicago) and confirm they will have a truck ready at 12, an hour past my 11am move out deadline, they now tell me the trucks will not be there until 3, apparently the trucks are not housed at this location either and they are waiting for them to be delivered. With no other clear option, I resign to waiting until 3 to pick up my truck. Just to be safe, after 2 unsuccessful attempts, I call again about 30 minutes later to reconfirm and make sure this is a hard confirmation for a truck at 3, the man who answers obviously annoyed with my third call today rudely assures me there will for sure be a truck waiting for me at 3. Mind you, with this third call it is also the third time they have taken my full name on the reservation and confirmed my truck. I arrive to pick up my truck at about 2:40. I'm once again rudely told the trucks are not there yet and they're waiting on an update from their transporter on when the will arrive. Fine, I'm here, trucks are on their way, I try to get everything finalized so I can just leave with my truck when it arrives. Then I'm told I do not have a reservation. I'm dumbfounded, I have called them 3 times each time giving my name and receiving confirmation, then no one admits to talking to me, then the person who confirmed this 3 times with me denies he ever spoke with me, then he decides he did speak with me but looked up my name after and I didn't have a reservation. 3 calls, 3 times I gave my name, 3 times I received a confirmation, now 6 hours after my original reservation time, I apparently do not have a reservation with them and they have no trucks. With an undeserving calmness, I very politely, albeit exasperated to the fullest, try to make sense of this and determine my options, 4 people are behind the counter, no one will make eye contact with and some even turn their backs as if I am no longer there, yet retort clipped responses to anything I say giving me no assistance whatsoever and will not even call Budget or see if another location has an available truck. I left this disaster of a company feeling less than human after the way I had been treated. Despite my Uhaul reservation being made last minute and the day of, the wonderful Uhaul location on Fullerton in Lincoln Park helped me immensely by securing a truck for me. I finally moved out of my apartment and headed on my way to Michigan, only 12 hours after the whole moving truck fiasco began. read more

Wow. This place definitely made my moving day extra complicated. My boyfriend and I were moving in together from our two different apartments. We waited too long to think about the actually moving day, but around two weeks before moving day, we began to search for moving trucks. There were almost none to choose from with available trucks, but finally found this Budget on Elston. There is a reason why they are the only ones with trucks at this time. I am gonna have to bullet point this because it's too long --got there before it opened at 8:25, first one in line, and didn't leave until 45 minutes later --was told I did not have a truck actually, and was called about it yesterday. No one called nor left a voicemail. --was told I could get the truck for the same price as a full day ONLY if i returned it by 2:30 --one employee showed up 20 minutes late and scolded her coworkers for not doing their work right --there are weird handmade posted signs that say things like "have an attitude and expect a higher charge" Just a very unprofessional place that should not still be operating. Lessons learned--definitely give yourself lots of time to look into a moving truck. read more

*** Be aware that this review is based on my experience with this location...I will review Budget the Company at the end of the review. I chose this Budget location for my recent Ikea pickup on living room furniture. The trip was from the location to Schaumburg and back. I have used UHaul in the past for many moves and furniture pickups with no problems. I chose Budget this time because I do occasionally like to try different businesses to compare. I picked up the truck on Elston with my gf. The guy at the counter was helpful. He walked out to the truck with us and marked down damages before we took the truck, as well as explained all of their "policies". This is where the day started to go downhill. We were informed that besides having to refill the gas on the truck to where we received it, we would also have to provide a receipt proving that we refilled the truck. I had never previously had to provide a gas receipt when renting a truck, and it still does not make much sense to me since the gas gauge shows whether you refilled it or not. We shrugged this oddness off and agreed to drop off a receipt with our keys. The truck worked great and we made the 45 mile round trip with no problems. I had received the truck on the F, so after returning to the city, I stopped at a gas station 1 mile from the Budget location. The began to fill the gas tank and the gas pump shut off after only 3 gallons. Thinking this seemed low, I pushed in another gallon, during whcih the pump shut off three times. When I turned the truck back on, the gas gauge was above the F. I then returned the truck, dropped off the keys and receipt and went on my way. This is where this location earned thier 1 star. A few days later I noticed that my credit card had been charged twice what my estimate was for the trip I made. I called up the Budget location and was informed that they had never received a gas receipt from me, so I was being charged a $50 refueling charge. I kindly informed the person on the phone that I had in fact dropped off the receipt. She said she would check their receipts and get right back to me. This was on a Friday. I never heard back from them. I called back on Tuesday. The person on the phone informed that they had found my receipt. Happy, I asked when they would take the fuel surcharge off my credit card. They then informed that they they would not be taking it off because in their words, "I did not put enough gas in the truck". After trying for 15 minutes to explain that when a gas tank is full, you can not add more gas, they informed me off this little policy they never mentioned when I picked up the truck. "Our trucks get 7 miles to the gallon...period. Since you drove 49 miles, you needed to provide a gas receipt with 7 gallons of gas on it, your receipt only had 3.5 gallons, so we will still be charging you the refueling cost." ARE YOU KIDDING ME?? They refused to listen to logic about how 7 gallons of gas can not fit into a tank that only has 3.5 gallons of space. Apparently, basic math skills was not one of the requirements to work here. The location refused to refund me my money, even after proving to them that I had filled the truck past the gas mark I had received it. THE AFTERMATH - I was able to receive part of the incorrect gas charge back from Budget Corporate. They gave me 15% off my truck rental for my troubles, which accounted for about half off what I lost. The Corporate company was very helpful and assisted me in getting some restitution for my troubles with the Chicago location. I would give Budget Corporate 4 stars if I could split up the review. The gentlemen at Corporate also informed me that this is the only Budget he has ever heard of asking for a gas receipt and that it was "Stupid and Pointless" CLOSING - I would NEVER recommend this Budget location to anyone renting a truck. Not only did they refuse to refund me a mistake that they made, they also never returned phone calls, and basically told me that they do not have to explain all of their policies. The one thing you need to know with this place is that YOU WILL WAIT FOR YOUR TRUCK. I don't care if you booked it a week ago, a month ago, even if it was booked at the day of your birth with a confirmation number on your birth cirtificate - your truck will not be ready when you get there. The day I was supposed to pickup the truck, they called and told me it was still in South Dakota. O.K. ...... .... so I waited till the next day. At 8:15AM the next morning I got a call stating that my truck was ready to be picked up. I promptly got in a cab, rushed over, and arrived only to find the doors locked and no one to help me. After wandering around for 10 minutes, I found a worker in the back surrounded by other people who were waiting for their trucks. I asked a guy that looked like an uglier version of "The Dude" from Big Labowski and he said "your truck got a flat tire." "I got a call that said it was ready for pickup" was my reply. To which he told me to go up front and he'd open up the doors for all of us to talk with him. This guy must have been a Shogun ninja assassin in another life because when we all went up front he just VANISHED. No trace of him to be found. All of us (10-12 people) were confused. There was no one there to help us. Finally a Latino woman named Rose showed up, and you knew she meant business when she arrived. She opened the front door and shut it without saying a word to any of us. 15 minutes later she emerges with shields at full and a list with a pen. We are all to put our name on the list, and remain outside - she'll call when our truck gets there. One guy demands to be let inside and she gets MAD. His name was given an asterisk, which I think meant he was blacklisted from rentals that day. 3 hour later I get another call "can you get here in 2 minutes, your truck is ready." I jumped on my bike (already spent $20 cab fare to get there and back) and hauled butt down there. When I get there the door is locked and even more people are waiting outside. Finally I sneak in when someone drops off a form, and am told my truck left 55 minutes ago, and should be here soon unless the driver stopped for McDonald's. Huh? Who lays more priority on a BigMac than a customer who needs to move NOW. Eventually the truck arrives and they waived off $60 in taxes since it came in 2 gallons low. My lesson to you if you do rent here is: 1) Plan to get the truck a day earlier than needed. You cannot count on them to have things ready. 2) Don't get outwardly frustrated. The employees are not the brightest. But they also ignore the sound of an angry voice. By far the worst truck rental experience of my life. The location is sketchy/weird (extreme mildew/mold smell in a dark, filthy consignment shop), the staff was extremely rude (the woman who checked in and out the truck had a nasty attitude for absolutely no reason), and they openly threaten you with charges that are not standard for Budget rental trucks. We only rented a small truck to move some furniture within the city but I would still warn you - DO NOT GO TO THIS LOCATION. I cannot believe they are still in business. My boyfriend and I walked away from the experience in utter shock due to how we were treated. Having had the great misfortune of having to move twice in as many months, I braced myself for another round of the hell that is dealing with a rental truck company. After renting from UHaul on my last go-round, I figured I'd face at least one of the following: (1) Ridiculously long lines (2) Rude employees (3) The wrong size truck or some other part of my order being incorrect (4) Having to wait for my truck and/or (5) No truck at all. Imagine my surprise when the line moved quickly, the employees were helpful and friendly, my order was fulfilled exactly as I had placed it and there was no wait for the truck. On top of that, when I returned the truck and hadn't refilled the gas, they waived the service fee because they acknowledged that I hadn't used that much. Also, the driver before me had left her wallet in the truck, which I returned at the office. Later that same day, Rose called and left me a really nice voicemail thanking me for returning the wallet. I think her making a point to show her appreciation really goes above and beyond typical customer service. Especially since she isn't even the person who was helping me that day. Despite all the terrible reviews, I would definitely go to this location again. I'm just hoping I don't have to move again for a long, long time. read more

Inconveniently cancelled on us last minute (we had made one for 6/29/19) after we made a reservation for a moving van and had the audacity to hang up on us on the phone after canceling on us. Absolutely unprofessional. I would give them zero stars for how they handle their business with customers. read more

DO NOT RENT A TRUCK FROM THIS PLACE. I wish I would have checked Yelp before renting a moving truck from this location, or any Budget location really. Bottom line, our reservations were not honored- we received a 12" truck versus a 16" truck and the staff was beyond rude and very unhelpful. I have never posted on Yelp but I would like to save anyone the trouble we went through. Things I wish I knew: 1- Do not get the insurance if you are already insured - most policies cover rental vehicles. 2- Make sure your truck matches your reservation, we were so distracted by the poor customer service, we did not closely at the truck. 3- Don't fall for any of the extra charges they try to scare you into. I needed a cheap car for a 2-day weekend rental, and the quoted rate of $21 a day plus insurance, taxes, fees totaled $80 after I booked it. Pricey for a poor grad student, but still reasonable. I returned the car 2 hours early, filled it with $20 of gas, and left it very clean. I got my bill and it was $400! Besides a mysterious $200 charge for "Virginia Beach" (??!!?) that ended up being some sort of "hold" that apparently will go away at some point even though I rented the car over a week ago, I got charged insurance in case I was secretly a non-American citizen and got sick while using their car. Great. I have contacted them and not yet heard back, but will update this if I get some money back. To be fair, the lady working at the counter was nice, but now I'm way suspicious that she was just drawing my attention while she ratcheted up the bill. Budget just sucks. read more
