Out of all the car rental services I have used, I like Getaround the best for short trips (less…read morethan 1 day). I've used Turo, traditional car rental companies (Hertz, Enterprise, etc.), and Zipcar. I think Truo and traditional rental companies are built more for longer term rentals and Zipcar is the most comparable. The hourly rates for Getaround are fairly reasonable, much better than Zipcar, plus Getaround doesn't charge a monthly fee. However, there is a reason why Zipcar is so expensive: the cars are owned and maintained by the company instead of ordinary people. With Getaround, you're renting out other people's cars and so the company doesn't have full control over the vehicle. It is possible that you may book a car that looks pretty good in the listing but when you get it, it's kind of dirty or not what you expected because the owner doesn't clean/maintain it. That is not necessarily Getaround's fault. For me, I've accepted that this may happen (and it has before), but for the money I save by not using Zipcar, it's fine by me. I have used Getaround so much that I know which cars in my area are clean and well-maintained and I tend to stick to those. If you're not willing to take the risk that a car might not be in perfect condition, then I'd say you should be willing to pay a premium for that. I've had maybe 2 interactions with customer service and both have been very good. I once got automatically charged a lot for gas because the car is parked on a slope and that affected the fuel level recorded after I dropped the car back. I only drove 5 miles in a 22mpg car, but the fuel level recordings made it seem like I used nearly 10% of the gas. I got my money back after explaining to CS via email. Another time I dropped off the car and then when I got to my apartment 2 blocks away I realized I left something in the car. I was able to call a customer service rep via the app and they waited on the phone as I walked back to the car and helped me unlock the car to get the item and lock it back up. Based on all of my Getaround experiences so far I'd definitely recommend it if you're a fairly flexible person with realistic expectations.

I use Uber a lot! But not always out of town over a long duration. However in Chicago I did use…read moreride share exclusively for a week. Note I also used Lyft and would compare prices. Not one or the other was always more reasonable. However once the price was $12 difference when heading to the airport. In my option ride share is the way to go if in the city of Chicago. There are too many issues with parking and the high price that makes it counterproductive to rent. The app functioned well, better in my opinion than Lyft. I utilized Uber around 10-12 times and found on average the rides arrived in under 10 minutes. Some were within a few, but others were longer. The drivers were almost all foreign, but spoke English. They were professional and mostly knew their way around. Few instances of problems that brings the review down a star and a half I would recommend Uber. 3.5 rounding up. Always tip your driver.

I asked them for my money back and they said I needed to go through the third party I used to make the reservation, which would be Uber. Uber is refusing to refund the money. They kept repeating that the rental company doesn't rent to locals. Ok, fine, I know that now. However, I DID NOT TAKE POSSESSION OF THE CAR OR USE IT. Therefore I am owed my money back for a car I did not pick up or use. There is nothing in the terms and services that stated the money is non refundable. It's a simple concept: I paid for a service that was not rendered therefore I get my money back. Uber did nothing but just tell me "their T&C says they do not rent to locals" and then tell me to have a nice day. I'm not trying to argue to use the car. I'm arguing that Uber doesn't get to keep my money for something that wasn't used. They've been ignoring me since their last "have a nice day" on the 18th. I've been sending emails almost every day since then and all of them have been ignored. They keep your money when they should refund it, and then they think ignoring you will make you drop it. Give me my money back.
