One of the very few times I did not read customer ratings before doing business. I received a call on the morning that I was supposed to pick up my truck from Santee. Telling me that the only truck available was in Marietta. Over an hours drive away from my location. Much longer in traffic. There was absolutely no other choice. No offer of a discount. I wonder if they would have charged me for the extra 150-200 miles added to pickup that truck. I don't understand why they didn't have someone deliver the truck to Santee. That's what other businesses would've done. I rated this a MAYBE because the gentleman who called from Marietta apologetic and sounded regretful. He had no choice in any of this mess. And was understandable, allowing me time to locate a truck from a competitor. I should have received a call from the Santee location, apologizing. Now in days behind on my move. Just like the reviewers before me, when we showed up to this Budget Truck Rental with a reservation from Costco, we were told that "the van you booked... I don't have one of those. Did you book this last night?" The reservation was made days prior and while we were offered another option (that didn't suit our needs) there was little done to help except a call to the Miramar location that did have what we wanted. Seriously, this guy couldn't even muster up an apology. Upon asking for the address to the other location we were given not a street name or number but rather a mouthful of jumbled directions that made no sense. So it seems if you book through Costco, if there is a one-way trip that takes priority, or a higher paying customer, you're out of luck. read more

This was my 2nd time renting from this location. I had reserved a 12' truck and when I got there there was only one 12' and it was driving away with someone. They offered a cargo van that "might be back by 5" or a 26' truck. I said a 26' for the same price? He reluctantly said yes. keep in mind my reservation was at 11:30am, we showed up at 11:33am. I asked him...you gave away our truck cause we're 3 min late?! He said the website let us double book ‍ but after reading the reviews here it seems to be a common occurrence. The worker didn't seem to be bothered that we were sort of upset (rightfully) his attitude was cavalier with a tone of it is what it is...sorry about your bad luck. Ultimately we didn't rent from them because the 26' offered was way too big for what we needed and the cargo van had no real ETA because as the worker stated "nobody returns when they are supposed to" We went to happy car wash in El Cajon. Got a truck no problem, same day, no reservation and overall cheaper. I work in the automotive industry...we have a rental fleet...if we did customers the way they did us we wouldn't have any customers. I won't rent from this location again. I wouldn't recommend to rent here if you have any moving to be done on any sort of time schedule, or if you want to get what you reserved for the time frame you reserved it. read more

I made a reservation for a moving truck through the Costco Travel website at Budget Truck Rental back on May 3rd for our move onMay 30th. I selected to pick the truck up at the Santee location and all was confirmed. This morning, May 26th, I received a phone call from John, the owner of the Budget Truck Rental in Santee, who told me that they didn't have any 26 foot trucks available for my reservation because a higher paying customer took it. He suggested I make a reservation somewhere else. Needless to say, I was upset because I made the reservation almost a month ago and I thought it to be unfair to give away my reservation to someone because they are to pay more money. John insisted that he was giving me good customer service by notifying me, and said, "I could have just not called you and had you find out we had no trucks when you got here." DO NOT RENT FROM THESE PEOPLE - I don't know how they have high ratings on here but only 2 stars on other platforms. We rented a 12-foot box and when we showed up the man working on Sat tried to convince my sister to take a van in a condescending and sexist way telling her that they are the same size and it's all psychological and the smaller van is the same size as the 12-foot truck, then he says "why didn't you call and confirm"? These people are useless, why would I need to call you if your website allowed the rental. After several minutes he decided to give us "an upgrade to a 16 footer instead. That's the good part of the review. We loaded the truck up in Santee, get on the 52, and as we go up the hill the power steering blows out in the middle lane and the truck just dies on the spot in the middle lane, Highway portal shut the lanes down and we managed to roll the truck in the left shoulder. We call the rental place and the guy tells me "That's odd, we have not had a truck broke down in the last 5 years, and to call the roadside assistance number on the contract. Mind you at the location during the walkthrough he tells me that he has not inspected this truck yet "Oklahoma plates" on it. We call roadside assistance, and nearly 15 minutes later the lady understand that the truck is broken down and needs to be towed, she asks how many in the truck and I told her 3 and when the tow truck showed up there was not enough room for everyone so we called for someone to pick us up from the side of the freeway. Road one towing guy was super cool, helpful, and towed to the house, we unloaded while the guy waited, towed to their yard under the direction of Budget. The next day budget calls me saying "Are you going to return the rental? I explain to this person it was towed Blah blah. We called for a refund on this and everyone pushes you around from the Santee location to customer care, after the 4th call and 45 minutes of them telling me "we can't refund because Santee people have not checked the truck in" they manage to issue the refund it. My sister called John Copeland and explained the lack of service provided and how she treated and he could care less saying "Ok". At the end of the day if you want to a cheap truck, crappy service, potentially breaking down, sitting on the freeway for 2 hours, and the worst customer service rent here, otherwise use any U-Haul or Penske rental place. read more

Wish I could give it a 0 star. We scheduled a rental pickup a week ago to get a cargo van at noon. We called a little before hand to see if we could get it early, the guy told us he rented out the van already. And we asked if it was going to be ready by noon, our scheduled pick up time, and he said it should be. We called again, and he said it still wasn't returned and he hopes it gets returned by 2. So now we are stuck scrambling around to try to find a van rental before our storage place closes. Maybe don't try to double dip on the rentals. You should hold the cars for people that have reservations already. Bad, bad customer service. read more

I called there 800 number and she asked if I could change the date of my reservation....For a move?! That's your response. This was my first time trying instead of U-Haul. Wish I read the reviews before booking a truck at this location. We showed up a few minutes before 8am (our reservation time). We were told that they did not have our truck. WHAT?!!! Supposedly the truck was not returned the night before and there was no way to get a hold of the renter. Okay, even if that's the case, shouldn't you give us a courtesy call to let us know so we can figure out an alternative? At least they "tried" to fix the situation. The girl helping us said she called the fleet manager and they found us a truck at another location. She even said she spoke to the new location to confirm. We show up at location #2 and they said they had no clue we were coming. No phone calls or any electronic notices from location #1. Awesome. Not only that, they were sold out. If you would like to book with an ahole front desk agent who has terrible customer service and then not even get the truck you reserved then this is the place for you! Booked online for 19.99 a day, they didn't mention all the add on fees for insurance, etc. I get those costs are needed but wish it had been more upfront instead of advertising for "ONLY" $19.99. Reserved a certain size then when I went to pick up the owner/front desk agent came in and asks if I got this phone call. I had no call from him and even checked spam and blocked numbers and nothing so pretty sure he was just lying. Informs me he doesn't have that truck so I have to take a smaller size. Doesn't sound apologetic in any way, almost says it in a way as if it was my problem I even wanted to rent a truck. Alright, whatever, I'll make it work even though it no longer could fit my bed so I had to deconstruct my whole bed. I drove a total of 5 miles altogether so the tank was still full when I returned it. He asks if I filled the tank and I said it's on F for full. I totally understand I should have topped it off but he then proceeds to look at me rudely, scoffs, makes a comment under his breath about me and walks away without saying a word. He checks the gas says nothing and goes back inside, hands me my receipt and goes back to his office without saying anything. I try not to think badly of people and suspect things like sexism, etc. but this guy treated me so poorly that it crossed my mind that he might think he could treat me like that because I was a 20 something female. I did and they said that I would get a call back in two hours. I never got a call back. in 8 hours I never got a call. I called the manager back. Worst truck rental service in town. They have so many hidden fees to start. We ordered a smaller truck for the weekend, when we arrived they said "the window was broken" so we had to get a larger truck. Then, we were told they were only there from 7am-10am, so we needed to get the truck back before 10 and filled with gas, or we would be charged extra. Which we didn't pick up the truck until 8:30. So less than 2 hours to move, get gas, and return? Quite ridiculous!!! Cost us near $200 for a few hours!!! Come to find out the owner also owns the antique shop next door. So not only are you paying for a truck, but the money goes to help their run down antique shop! What a scam, I do not recommend this place to anyone and will never go through them again. read more

Very helpful in providing me with my options and advising on how to handle the transfer of reservation, matched the price, were flexible when I needed to change my timing for delivery, and very friendly upon return. I booked online for a truck for one day, from 10am to 10am the next day. Got a confirmation, everything set. When I get there on the day to pick up the truck, not only is the reservation not fully in their system but I end up having to pay a bunch of other add on costs that weren't reflected in my online reservation. The add ons like blankets and a hand truck that I had reserved were not in their system either. They require a $150 deposit and if you pay with a card you won't get your money back for 2 weeks. The biggest problem was that I had reserved the truck from 10 to 10 and the guy at the counter tells me that they already had the next day booked and that I either have to return the truck before 8am or don't get the truck at all. If there was a problem with my 10-10 reservation don't you think they would have called me in all the days they had prior to the day of pickup to tell me this? They were nice enough to give me a truck with a lift gate and they waived the late night drop fee ($10) but all the other costs that were not shown in my online reservation and the reservation issues once we got there were annoyances I would have rather not dealt wiith. read more

We rented a truck from the Santee California location on 3/26/2015. When I picked up the truck, the truck was dirty, oil on the front seat. The agent just let me quickly examine the outside of this "truck". The following is a list of items that were wrong with the truck: 1. Inside of truck was dirty, motor oil on the seat got on my clothing before I noticed it 2. The truck had a severe lack of power even empty 3. Because of the amount of items being moved, it took us 36 hours to load. The ramp was jammed and my laborers had to spend an hour unjamming it so it could be used. We tried to call the Santee office but got voicemail and no response to date. 4. On day 1 we were pulled over by CHP for a brake light beig out and 3 clearance lights being out. He let us off with a warning and followed us off the 8E in Yuma AZ where we stayed until morning. I called the Budget in Santee and again, got voicemail. I had all of my tools in a machanics roller box so I picked up the bulbs and installed them myself. 5. The truck leaked oil onto the exhaust so bad I had to open the window to breath at each stop or in traffic. At that point I called Budget roadside. I spoke to Roberto and he said it may "take 2-3 days to fix", and that Budget wasn't responsible for our lodging while we waited for the truck to be repaired. He said we could also go to another Budget and get a new truck, but we'd have to unload and load by ourselves, not Budgets responsibility. I had no help other than my fiancé and it would have been impossible for us to pull off the latter. 6. We didn't "refuse" assistance as was noted by Budget after we called to complain. We had a deadline for work, and for live tropical fish we were transporting. We had auxiliary power enough to last 5 days, the fish would have all died. We didn't expect all of these vehicle maintenance issues to happen on day one, who does??? We kept digging out of desperation. 7. The truck had no power and would also cut out going down the freeway. This happened the entire trip, forcing us to drive in the slow right lane so as not to impede traffic. 8. When we stopped for fuel, sometimes we had to wait for 10-15 minutes before the truck would start. 9. There were all kinds of alert lights blinking as we drove. 10. When it rained we had to pull over because the windshield wiper was torn and didn't work, we had to park in a rest area for 6 hours until it stopped. 11. The AC stopped working on day 2. We were driving with animals in 92-98 degree heat. 12. The steering wheel was offset by 10-20 degrees, not straight. 13. There was significant play in the steering, hard to relax and drive 14. The radio worked intermittently 15. The brakes became spongy on our last driving day in traffic, had to pump them constantly. 16. After we unloaded the truck we pulled it out of our driveway and discovered oil all over the driveway. This was undoubtably the absolute worst rental experience I ever had. I've rented from Penske dozens of times, no problems. I rent cars from Budget on my monthly business trips, no problem. I thought I'd save $500 over Penske using Budget, and instead: 1. Less than 3 mpg instead of 8mpg with Penske (2,300 mile trip) costing $1,000 additional in fuel 2. It took us 6 days to get here instead of three, costing me $98 and $79 additional for hotels 3. We were stressed out the entire trip, convinced we wouldn't make it 4. The only options from Budget cost us more money. This Budget location rented us an unsafe, dangerous truck, and the Santee agent knew that was the case. We have been treated poory by customer service, insulted by Roberto at Roadside Assistance, and told by "Nathan in Washington State" that their were no notes at all related to our rental, proven to be a lie when we followed up with another Budget agent "John in Guadalajara". read more

Super friendly and workable; our 16' truck was fantastic and in proper working order. Never again Budget! May be cheaper but the trucks have no ramp, a dolly is $17 to rent, $12 charge to allow someone else to drive, $10 charge to return a truck during closed hours, and about a 20 minute speech on insurance that is really none of their business. Have to fill out a questionnaire form that they insist you send to your insurance company... because none of them cover the trucks (mine did and my other driver's did). Was not a seamless transaction. Took about an hour just to get the keys. Very annoying. read more

We reserved a 24' truck for last weekend & showed up right on time only to find two very hostile men. One was super grumpy & seemed bothered by customers & the other, Roberto, was extremely unpleasant throughout the entire process. We felt like we were dealing with a car salesman trying every tactic to up-sell us on literally everything he could. He gave us the worst feeling about doing business with this company. He tried to rip us off in every way. I wanted to purchase 5 extra large boxes as well & at first he said they didn't have any (when they're clearly visible right behind us in the lobby). After showing him that they do in fact have the extra large boxes, he tried to grab us 5 large boxes. We told him that he was grabbing the wrong size and he played dumb. He had to grab some scissors to cut packaging wrapped around some extra large boxes and after he put the scissors away he grabbed 5 MEDIUM sized boxes while we were sighing paperwork! We caught him & said something of course. Unbelievable. Total scum bag. There was another couple next to us who came to pick up a truck they reserved only to find out that they didn't even have a truck for them! Their mistake! All they had to offer them was "knocking off SOME miles" and giving them a much smaller van.. which unfortunately for the couple wouldn't work because they needed a truck specially for their fridge which as you know can't be laid on it's side. We were called this afternoon by the Budget Santee office to say they don't have a truck for us and that they don't do the online reservations. I don't understand why we were given the option to book on line received a confirmation # and thought that we were all set for this coming weekend. I have reserved a 24' truck with trailer 10 days in advance. At the pick-up time they did not have the truck. They did have an awfully beat up, dirty, very damaged old truck 2 1/2 hours later. When I dared to complain to John (is he the owner?) he wanted to refuse service and throw me out. Of course at that point good luck to me to find an other truck of that size to make a 1000 mile move. If you have moved, you know how stressful it is. Any delay, let alone a 2 1/2 hour delay will make the move even more difficult. Not to mention the amazingly unprofessional behavior of John. Went to check our bank statement to verify final charges after returning the rental truck after hours. Not only were the charges inflated, but saw we were also charged a $50 "No-Show" fee for a truck in Tulsa, Oklahoma on the SAME DAY. Obviously we never reserved this and it has become a huge hassle to have this charge reversed. Not to mention an enormous security issue. Avoid, avoid, avoid. read more

They will take your reservation money online and send you to a Budget Dealer who has no trucks and won't have trucks for days out. Then they will give you a window of time to remedy the issue of finding you a truck after they knew there were no trucks but the window of time will be beyond 5pm so that way the customer service department can close before they get back to you and of course you cant get back to them until you've lost valuable company dollars being dik'd around. Called Wednesday - Do you have a truck available - They said yes, but you have to reserve it before we can set it aside for you. I reserved it on the website and they called me back and said "we have your truck see you on Saturday". I called back Friday and said "you have my truck, what time do you open". They said "We have your truck cya tomorrow at 9am". I show up Saturday at 9am. No truck. "That truck that just pulled out was the last one we had, we are OVERBOOKED". What the hell??!?!?!?!? If you have somebodys money, you DONT OVERBOOK!!!!!!!! We had a bunch of people lined up to help us move THAT DAY. They were unable to help us find a truck at any other budgets around town, called 800# they were going to have a supervisor call us back. 5 hours later a supervisor called us back, but all they could do was say sorry. By then we had found a truck at Penske. It was a couple dollars more but they were way more professional. I have had a couple of questionable experiences with Budget in the past (The truck isn't there, and we have to goto another location. The guy that is manning the counter takes 30 minutes to get back to the counter to help us) prior to this experience. After this I would not recommend budget to anybody unless the price was *WAY* cheaper and they were willing to deal with poor service. read more

The owner of this Budget Truck Rental is a psycho. DO NOT RENT FROM HIM. I would give this company a minus 5 rating if it was an option. The person claiming to be the owner of this franchise is John Bessone II. I have never met a man as rude as this person. I returned a one-way truck rental to this Santee location. I fillled the gas tank just 4 miles from the location. He told me that I had to go to a gas station and top it off. I told him that the gauge was above the full mark. When stopped at his location it was just below the full mark. I got in the truck and headed for the gas station. The gauge registered full again. I went back and told him what happened. Again he told me I had to top off the gas tank. I told him that something must be wrong with the gauge and asked him to ride with me to the gas station. Instead, he ordered me out of the truck and took it himself to the gas station where he added 5 gallons. Obviously, the gas gauge was not working properly. Not only, did he charge me for the gas, he also charged me an addition $30 for not bringing the truck back with a full tank of gas. I called Budget's customer service to complain and report how rude he was. They told me there was nothing they could do. Their response was that "sometimes you run into people like that". DO NOT GO TO BUDGET TRUCK RENTALS -- if: you expect a company to uphold their end of a deal...OR you are on a schedule.. Budget Rental Trucks - absolutely one of most trying experiences in a very long time. A week ago reserved with a credit card a truck and car hauler to be picked up Friday morning at 8 AM. The truck was available but no car hauler. Budget found one in Palm Desert (3 hours away) and said they would have the car hauler at Santee for pick up on Friday afternoon. Truck fully loaded, my cat sedated and ready to go but still no car hauler by 5 PM. I called Budget Headquarters only to be told that only the price is guaranteed not the inventory and there's nobody higher up than the call manager to speak with. Today - Saturday at 2:13 -- still no car hauler. My stuff is packed for the long drive across the states but no car hauler. Budget has been remiss in fulfilling their part of the agreement for more than 30 hours -- and there's not a dang thing I can do but write letters to better business and WAIT. I am so frustrated, angered, and quite honestly -- powerless. Surely there's some place to turn where one can turn to report companies like BUDGET TRUNK RENTALS. I even tried the TV stations hoping they would find this story enough to take on the air. Not juicy enough -- heck it's only a citizen being boned by big business. Why would that be news worthy? It's business as usual. Budget Customer Service -- doesn't exist. My hope is that when I make my case to the government that they will take this on board and not endorse Budget Rental Truck for future government employees conducting a 'self-move'. read more

I have had many exceptional experiences with this store. All three individuals who assisted me expressed excellent customer service, really knew their products, took time to make certain I was comfortable with all the features of the truck and provided the supplies I needed at a very reasonable price. John, Kathy, and Robert should receive awards for their patience with people who, while often not used to driving a truck (or moving for that matter), may arrive in a stressed out manner.
