I went there on January 2nd receive a bad customer service. I called the store to pick me up. The guy that answered my phone seems like did not want to work and rude. It was the black guy. The hispanic guy was very good and gave me the compact suv. A week later I called for extension for the rental I think the black guy again who answered the phone. He is very rude either you authorized the charge or return the car. I was authorized him to charge me and he did not. So I got charged 60 for late fees. I just noticed a week later try to do extension again for my car. Your Agent is represent your company how good you treat them. Most likely you did not treat them really good; that is why has a low and cheap customer service like the rental car. They are cheap but the customer service are cheap as well. read more

This was the 2nd time I had to use Hertz on Arnele in El Cajon, I did not choose to. It will definitely be the last. Very slow customer service when checking the car out. 1 customer ahead of me and it took 55 minutes to get my rental car. The same thing the first time I had to get a car at this location. Thought it was a fluke, but I guess not. When the agent drove the car around to me it was COVERED in bird poop and the back passenger window had yellow writing all over it like it had just returned from a tow yard. He said that shows it had an oil change. Strange they draw that on a window, and give to customer like that! All this AFTER he "washed it". I said I am not driving off in this filthy car. His response was, they have to hand wash the vehicles AND that when I return it it will be dirty too. I cannot believe customers are given vehicles so filthy. I asked him to please wash it again or please get me another car. He took it and rewashed it and got the poop and coloring off. Inside was just as dirty and was given to me with barely a 1/4 tank of gas, approx 80 miles on the gauge. I was told by the Hertz customer service agent who set this up through insurance, to call 1 hour prior to pick up to make sure vehicle was available. I tried calling 7 times before calling a main Hertz office. They tried calling and couldn't get anyone to answer either. When I dropped car off today, I got home and realized I left something in car, tried their "lost and found" option. No luck. No one answers and when they did pick up it was immediately hung up. Hope you are not in a hurry to pick up your car from the dealer. Waited in the lobby for 19 minutes before anyone came out to find out if I needed help. Then took him another 17 minutes to check in the rental car. They left 5 customers standing in the lobby as the manager says he needs to pick up a customer?? Like how does a manager just dip out with a lobby full?? After that bs, I had 3 minutes to get to the dealer to pick up my car! Both the manager and the 1 employee are rude and super disrespectful! I have just recently begun regularly renting from Hertz and this is my preferred location. I have now rented a few SUVs from this Hertz and my experiences have been generally positive. It is easy to reserve (tip: never use your digital card to reserve -- only the physical card!), the team is fast and helpful, and the return process is very easy. The SUVs I have rented from Hertz have always been Ford Explorers. Apparently, the company has an agreement with Ford. So no options for something like a Grand Cherokee, Atlas, CX-9 or BMW X5 like a competitor may offer. While I appreciate the consistency and reliability of the Explorer, the vehicles are not always in the best condition. On several occasions, the SUVs were not thoroughly cleaned, with items like bottle tops and a chip bag on different occasions. Additionally, the vehicles tend to have minor interior damages, such as scuffs and scratches on the seats and dashboard. Even when the mileage is extremely low. Once, a window motor began to go out and the only option I had was to go specifically to the San Diego Airport Hertz to ask for an exchange. I've never had an issue with cigarette smoke, however. Despite these issues, the Ford Explorers have performed well on the road. They are spacious, comfortable and have some modern features -- great for long trips. Also, I am still pleased with the overall cost, ability to rent for travel into Mexico, the customer service and reservation experience, which is why I keep returning. read more

I should have read the reviews before making my reservation. I have to get in the road for an appointment and I am getting extremely furious. So---- after waiting 1 hour and only having two people in from of me, the employee never even said anything such as - how can I help you , sorry for the wait - nothing. He was rude from the start / and the. Asked for my credit card, which I dropped onto the counter and be said "don't be rude". I said excuse me? What? I suggest never renting from Hertz - at least at this location. My partner had to be checked into a hospital in LA at a specific time and this company almost made us miss his appt. My husband and I got a rental while our car was being repaired at a nearby auto shop. We received a Tesla thinking this was going to be comparable to our vehicle. Unfortunately, the car was dirty. Food stains everywhere, nail clippings in the center console, and material peeling on the wheel. It's clear that they do not take care of their cars. Additionally, the service was extremely slow. Legitimately the worst car rental experience on the planet. I don't know where to start. I'm only here because stupid Kia - which is fixing something huge on my car that is under warranty - is taking forever and won't give me a loaner car. I would rather walk the streets of El Cajon to get to my destination, even walk the 8 just to get home. The inside is gross. Every rental takes so long you think you are going to die here. Every rental feels like it's the first time the people working here have ever done it. They seem to have to do all of it - like they spend a half an hour looking up an existing reservation, then step away to clean the car themselves, then come back and screw up the transaction part somehow. The whole time this little boom box is playing in the background and if you are lucky one of the employees is also eating a lunch. It's literally hell on earth. I would rather use a Razor scooter to get to work than to rent a car here ever ever again. Honestly. Look for a different option. Would leave negative stars if that was an option. read more

Absolutely the worst experience! I would put zero stars but yelp doesn't allow it. Have been renting here for years but in the last year Ed is no longer the manager and the customer service and operations have gone downhill greatly. I arrived to pick up a car I reserved 2 months ago and was told a price almost $200 more than what I had booked for!! When I presented my confirmation email from booking, I was told 'sorry, the system won't let me change it.' The employee, Eric, did not attempt to fix this and even when I asked him to call customer service to make it right, he would not and told me I had to call. I was told I could file a claim after the rental to try to get refund of the upcharge since I have the original confirmation email showing the rate. Hertz even sent another email after pick up congratulating me on my rental and showing the original rate! Unfortunately, since Ed has left, the quality has suffered greatly. The vehicles are dirty, with this one being the worst. Stains on the seats and center console. Good thing I always have a wipe or two in my purse cause the interior was filthy. Food crumbs and stickiness everywhere. The vehicle looked like someone was living out of it and smelled overwhelmingly of air freshener thinly veiling cigarette smoke. The outside of the car was filthy as well and the trunk obviously had not been vacuumed. I would have exchanged the car but Eric had told me there were only two cars available and while I was on the phone with customer service, he rented the other car (a F150 truck). read more

I had no problems here. Every other place I called sounded as though they didn't wana be bothered. I sorta needed a small rental fast because I was about to take my truck to the auto body shop. No one had small economy cars and I didn't wana come outa pocket ... insurance only allotted me $25 pd. Ed the manager was friendly from the jump. Never made me feel awkward. Put me at ease 'cause I was a little stressed, to be honest ... got me into an itty bitty Nissan Versa. Nice break from my big ol' gas guzzling truck. Anyway - it's right off the freeway. Rented a car from Hertz Dallas Texas Love Field Airport. The car was ok but the wipers did not work and it rained for 2 days while we were there. The return area was not well staffed. After the return my CC was charged for the rent they still have a hold on my CC . Its been 13 days since and my bank won't do anything until Hertz releases the hold. The car would shake when braking, especially downhill on a mountain. I called several times on our journey to get a replacement but they only offered for us to stop and get it repaired. Was rear ended a month ago and other drivers insurance was state farm. The insurance company recommended that I use Hertz since it was in close proximity to auto body shop where my car was being repaired. The whole process with Hertz 'in person' was great at El Cajon office - I was picked up timely, at my check out time I was handled promptly in office, car clean- returned without issues, no additional charges (except a 'hold deposit' until state farm paid bill), sales people were nice (or so I thought- prior to being outright lied to- TWICE!) etc. Big time problems began about two weeks later when the supposed 'hold' on my credit card until state farm paid was no longer a 'hold' but was now an actual charge! I got in touch with state farm and they had paid off Hertz 9 days prior but charge was still lingering like a bad dog fart on my credit card bill. I needed to pay my credit card so I decided to call Hertz rental car billing dept since I needed this resolved ASAP. This is where it all turned to dog $hit. First off the accent is so thick with overseas call center personnel that I had to repeat my story like 5 times. Finally the agent understood and put me on a 15 minute hold. The agent came back and said that my charge was not a 'hold' but was for an additional $25.99 PER DAY extra insurance cost that I supposedly signed up for! It was almost $250.00 total for the amount of time I had the vehicle. I told the billing agent to connect me with the El Cajon office immediately and he did within seconds ( he was probably glad to 'pass the buck'). So I spoke with Spencer at the office and he was just a caught in cross fires dealing with me. Basically he agreed with the billing agent and said that I did want this insurance and agreed to it. Spencer offered a 'courtesy credit' of 50 dollars off my next rental - I said no thanks and please have your manager call me back. That was 8 days ago and I was never called back by the manager of the El Cajon office. The Mexican dude (wish I could remember his name) that processed my car rental at El Cajon office OUTRIGHT lied to me about the way the insurance works for the vehicle. Scouts honor here- the dude literally said it is a 'one time charge' of an additional $25.99 to provide you with extra insurance coverage that will guarantee a 'no hassle process' if anything happens to the vehicle - your fault or not. I would have NEVER, EVER purchased an insurance that cost $25.99 PER DAY - my own auto insurance already protects me! I just thought 'What the heck an extra $25.99 for peace of mind- what could go wrong?' HAHA! A lot obviously.... Ok this is that part that angers me more than anything else - same Mexican dude that checked me in also checked me out - he obviously pulls this additional insurance purchasing scam all the time because he literally warned me, "Don't freak out when you see a large charge on your credit card bill, it is just the hold we are putting on it until State Farm pays - you will only see the charge for $25.99 after that.'" This guy totally knew what was up and that he was pulling a fast one on me - obviously he's done it before and has had a run in or two with irate customers .... I am not sure how it works with Hertz but I highly suspect that the agents in office get some type of bonus or reward for selling this insurance- I can not think of any other reason why such shady, aggressive and deceptive sales tactics are used. It's as clear as a bell to me that whomever manages this El Cajon location gives zero fks because he/she never calls back customers and lying to patrons is a business practice on the regular here. Horrible experience! My car's transmission died so I needed to rent a vehicle for about a week while my car gets repairs. This company left me stranded. I booked it all online and after getting a ride to the rental place, they would not rent me a car because I did not want to put a deposit on my credit card. I only use my debit card which has a Visa logo on it. No where on the website did it explain this, and the rude guys did not tell me this when I first got there. So I wasted my time. I will now be going to enterprise Where they do not care if you pay with a debit, credit, or cash. Horrible customer service. Manager does not know how to speak to customers. The key chain did not show how much gas we had as it was all crossed out in black. They quickly put a new sticker on the key chain and said we did not fill the gas tank all the way. We called and spoke with the manager prior to arriving and filling up the tank to be sure. Then manager could have easily looked up our account to be sure we had the mileage down seeing that it was not in the paper work they handed us & the key chain was marked out in black and not able to read. My frustration with this Hertz location is the Manager. He immediately started telling me he was not giving me free gas, & he works in sales that I the customer will not get over on the company, instead of listening to my frustration or even answering my questions. I did not ask for free gas. Once my fiancé went to fill up the tank it was short 3 gallons! They wanted to charge us $50 for $13 of gas. They knew I had to head to the airport but no type of customer care or appreciation. I've worked many years in sales and service. This was not valuing a customer. Instead the manager continues to sarcastically tell me "oh we appreciate you". As I am sitting there waiting for my fiancé to come back another lady comes in and complains about the car not working correctly, on top of that she sees her total is not what she expected so the manager adjusted her price since she was charged an extra day of insurance. The manager had the nerve to tell me I was trying to get over. A loyal customer every time (2x a year or more) that I come into San Diego I always rent here that i was trying to get over on them. I noticed this Hertz location has a lot of bad reviews. It looks like the reviews are based on dealership rentals or service rentals. I only needed a car for three days to go out of town. I have no complaints. Got a decent car for 1/3 of what it would cost at the airport. If I would have rented at the airport the surcharges would have been another $100 so I don't have any complaints. Plus the place is close by my house and upon returning the car they paid for a free LYFT ride home. Customer service was very good as they had three people working the counter. read more

Caution: Check for expired license plate tags before accepting a vehicle. Pros: the representative was very considerate of my family needs and found a car comparable to the seating size of my Nissan Rogue that was in for service. She was very friendly and got me all setup with a car in a fairly quick time frame. I left there happy. Cons: Upon reaching my home, I noticed the license plate had expired tags. I called the office about how to fix this so I can avoid being pulled over by highway patrol for this problem. The male representative said,"Oh you won't get a ticket. We couldn't rent you a vehicle with expired tags. I'm sure it's fine." Feeling this answer was not helpful at all, I felt stuck. Since I was only keeping the rental a day, I didn't pursue it getting fixed right away. I didn't like taking a chance driving an untagged vehicle like this...making myself a target to be pulled over by highway patrol. Please fix your tags and license plates Hertz of El Cajon. They have no shame what so ever!!!! They wanted to charge us for gas money that was filled by another customer who was returning the SUV that they only had which was bigger than what we were equivaled to get by the insurance. It happened in front of me and my wife when that customer asked us if we mind paying him for the gas that he just filled the SUV before deciding to return it back for whatever his reason was. They gave him a voucher of $50 and they wanted to charge us $80 upon returning that SUV with quarter tank as they stated when we got it. My wife argued with Eric who was the employer who asked her in a very condescending tone "Haven't you ever rented a car before?" and she refused to pay that amount and decided to return the car at another location where the employee was shocked about this act. After all that, they still charged $25 on our security deposit. Be sure not to fall in the same scam that they do. read more
