Is there such a thing as a mom and pop liquor store? The owners are super cool, nonjudgemental, and haven't reported me to the gambling anonymous. Neither one of the owners looks like a 'Bud'. It's my good luck lottery store. I go here because one day when I win the lottery and the store gets a check for selling the winning lottery ticket, I would want Bud's Liquor to have it. I've never bought liquor here, only my lottery tickets and Sunday papers. If you have a wall of liquor, you must be doing something right. read more

Bad experience there just now. I pulled into the parking lot, walked in and bought some beer and a Gatorade. $10-11 purchase. I'm putting it into my trunk and start to walk across the street to El Zarape to quickly pick up my take out order. The owner is following me asking me where I'm going. When I explain the situation, he implies that it's not ok. I have to repark my car whilst the deliciousness that is El Zarape is getting cold. I understand he wants his customers to be able to park, but If I spend $10 at his store, he should have been a little bit more lax about me running across the street for a moment. The parking lot wasn't even full. I won't be back. 2 stars just because I'm bitching unnecessarily right now. There are worse things in life. read more

I so miss Mark & Emily The best customer service, the only store I purchased my items from when I lived in the same neighborhood since 1986. The son's & daughter Awesome as well. Mark & Emily always made my family feel welcome as they witness my children grow up. Unfortunately I had to move to another area of town 2 years ago. It's so not the same Bud's Liquor mention in a book I'm featured in. Luvs ya'll much **Side Note** Parking is TIGHT many folks want to park and walk someone else NO!!!! there are other customers who need to park to make a purchase. I used to drive around the block several times to park, cause there are inconsiderate folks who think it is okay to park and walk some where else. There are four "mom and pop" convenience stores within a two block area in University Heights so there is a lot of competition. It must be rough for the folks who run these shops because there can't be enough business to support all four. Bud's Liquor is one of the smaller two ships, but it is consistently well stocked unlike some of the others. So it has that going for it. However the guy that works there seems generally inattentive to me and the other customers. He just looks tired and sort of puts up with me buying stuff. I'm pretty sure his name isn't Bud, too. Sometimes my card won't read in his crappy credit card machine and he makes me walk to the credit union a block down the street to use the ATM to get cash to bring back to him. Every time that this happens he looks at me like I'm some sort of credit card scammer. I don't know why he can't just type in the card number manually when his machine can't read a card. All in all, it is a completely non-memorable place to buy a coke. I've got no real complaints with it. Just make sure you have cash. read more

Remember when the power went out and people were scrambling for ice? And remember how you probably had to check a couple of places to see if they had ice? Well, guess who got the last 2 bags! MEEEE! You did me a solid, Bud's Liquor, so Im gonna do you a solid and give you a good review! They have a good selection of beer and wine and booze, for decent prices. I like how this place is a small business, mom and pop shop, and the older lady who works there is so nice!! I went to buy ice cream there a couple of times and she was very helpful and didnt call me a fatty for getting ice cream when we both knew I shouldnt have. And one of th times I got a limited edition flavor that no other place had. Its wasnt memorable enough to remember what it was at this moment, but it was cool, I was told it was the last one. I live equidistant between 2 liquor stores: Bud's & Sunshine, but I can count the number of times I've been in Sunshine on one hand. Bud's is my 'go to' place for wine when I run out (the horror! the horror!) and also quite a few of those last minute canned good type things that I'm always running out of. Minus one star, though, for not having coconut milk when I desperately needed some and forcing me to go all the way to Henry's in the rain. Plus the first half-dozen times I was in here, they ID'd me. A bit of an ego boost with my liquor? Why yes, thank you, I don't mind if I do! Now, though, they remember who I am and have been known to shout hello to me as I walk past. This may be an indication of a larger problem, but they say the first step to getting better is admitting you have a problem. I'm not quite ready to take that step yet. *burps* read more

University Heights is great. With 4 Convenience Stores/Liquor Stores walkable from my place, how can it be anything but awesome. Bud's is my goto place, though. The others will do in a pinch, and if I am walking down that side of the street, but Bud's is the place I march to when I am on a mission. Ma and Pa opperated, and just plain great. The Good: The shop is quaint and pleasant enough. They have a great liquor selection. The owners can be very nice. The Bad: Their "convenience" items are insanely overpriced. ($7.71 for 24 Advil or $4 for a small naked orange juice). To be fair if you need Limes they tend to have some on the counter which can be nice. read more

I have been to Bud's on many occasions looking for Big Sticks...and finding them. Big Sticks...you know, the frozen, juicy air conditioning for your insides...ah! Damn I love this place. It is such a breathe of fresh air to walk into a convenience store that is actually clean, well stocked and has friendly service. It is a mom and pop shop after all. Mom and pop place. "Mom" has spotted me a buck-fifty when I didn't bring enough cash with me and always recognizes me and my brother, confusing one for the other. "Dad" charges 50 cents to use the credit card machine, but is otherwise fine. read more

It's a nice little corner store, in a neighborhood a block from two other corner stores. They have a bit of craft beer, not as large as Park Deli down the block or Summer which is catty-corner to Bud's, but the smaller selection means that the beer turns over pretty regularly which can happen at other convenience stores with larger selections. Bud's is half a block from my front door so I tend to visit "Bud" and his wife quite often. I think they recognize me when I come in, and I do a good job pretending we're friends, but I know they think I'm crazy. Oh well. I'm either getting Coke Zero, 40's, Chips, or a pepperoni stick. Or all of them at the same time. It all leads to my healthy lifestyle. Oh yeah, I get orange juice sometimes when I am in the mood for a brass monkey. It makes the 40 that much more healthier. Family and I have been regulars for years and these folks always treat us right. From Papa to Mama to the little Sis, they have grown to know us and "spot us" here and there. Usually pick up snacks for watching the game, drinks, or smokes for us all. They never judge us, but only love us. If we moved across the county, we will still make the effort to see these lovely folks. read more

Best local market/liquor store in University Heights. They always have what we need including groceries we would pay more for at large grocery stores. At the holidays they even order eggnog just for us. My partner and All our neighbors agree this is our personal family grocery store. DON'T SHOP HERE!!! After being told in the parking lot that I couldn't park in their lot I went in the store to buy lottery tickets (office pool), first mistake! Then I went to cash in my previous tickets which I had checked for $6 and the guy behind the counter only gives me $2. After a short argument he gives me the tickets and when I go to a 7-11 the tickets register as "cashed" so I was ripped off for $4. Again, DON'T SHOP HERE!!! read more

It seems funny to be reviewing a little corner liquor store, but that's Yelp for you. Whoever Bud was sold the place long ago to Mark and his lovely wife. They're complete workaholics -- one of them is here 365 days a year (Christmas included) 12 hours or more a day. They're very friendly, recognize folks from the hood and keep themselves well stocked. They have a pretty nice selection of wine from complete crap to some fairly good stuff. The prices are very reasonable for this type of store. read more

Horrible customer service. Store has a surcharge policy for credit card purchases under $10. After reluctantly agreeing, I was told to take my business elsewhere if the surcharge made me unhappy, and was handed the card back. Will never shop here again read more
