Extremely Disappointing Experience What happened to Buena Vet? This practice has changed dramatically. It has become extremely difficult to reach anyone, and the hours of operation seem inconsistent. We are also deeply disappointed by how the hospital manager, Mary, was reportedly treated and terminated. From our experience, Mary was the glue that held the practice together. She kept things organized, ensured the hospital ran smoothly, and genuinely cared about the clients and their pets. Her absence is very noticeable. We are still waiting for our pets' medical records to be emailed so that we can establish care elsewhere. Unfortunately, the current lack of communication and service has completely eroded our trust. How a hospital treats its employees says a lot about its leadership and how the practice is being managed. At this point, I no longer feel comfortable entrusting my pets' care to Buena Vet. Our pets deserve a veterinary hospital where communication, professionalism, stability, and patient care are clearly priorities. Had to take my cat ozzy here last minute for a major rash. I was terrified and a crying mess because this was his first emergency trip. We have been taking our two cats (male and a feral female) here for 5-6 years. There are routinely issues. There is a separate 1-star review regarding our female cat's recent appalling experience at Buena Vet where they, amongst a litany of other things, sedated her and did none of the things they were supposed to do. Prescriptions are a problem all the time. Our male cat with terminal gastric lymphoma needed steroids and nausea meds at the end of his life for comfort. He ran out of his steroid. Despite being a patient for years and on his deathbed, they wouldn't give a refill because "it is a different vet that has not seen him before." Laughable because I don't think he had ever seen any vet there more than twice there. They wanted me to bring my dying cat who hated going to the vet and had been seen recently, in for a damn refill. My poor dude suffered unnecessarily for days while I frantically tried to convince them of their mistake and the torment they were putting him through. I was getting ready to go to the emergency vet because of Buena's incompetence before they finally gave it to him. It still makes me mad to think about how he suffered because of this shameful ridiculousness. Our feral cat's methimazole needs to be a non-coated, crushable tab to mix with churu. It's the only way she'll take it. Requested a refill. It went as a coated tab that can't be crushed. Another time, it went to the wrong pharmacy. Other times, there have been issues with transmission of the prescriptions. One time a pharmacist gave me a big eye roll saying they always have problems with Buena Vet. Communication is a problem. The person who answers the phone tries to answer questions that aren't appropriate for them. On numerous occasions over the years, they have attempted to give medical advice that they are not qualified to give only to be contradicted by an appropriate professional later. Once they told me my cat's medication that I requested a refill on that was previously prescribed from this same office didn't exist. I had to have the pharmacist from CVS call them to explain that this medication does in fact continue to exist. Another time they gave incorrect advice about how a medication worked. I wish I could remember more specifics. Due to the vet shortage, you'll rarely see the same vet, but changing vets isn't even the issue. The issue is them doing a bad job transitioning between vets. Over visits spanning 2-3 years now, they never got the dosage for methimazole right on the prescription. There was one mistake years ago, and despite explaining it to 3 different vets, it never gets fixed (the dose we are supposed to give is not the dose prescribed). Another example is not remembering that my feral cat will need sedation every single time. It was as if there was no record keeping at all because I had to explain this every time I had a new vet. They always want to torment her trying without it first. One time a vet promised me a very particular sedation plan with details laid out. Next visit comes, different vet, and they had no idea what I was talking about. Buena Vet needs to address the root causes of these problems, not blame things inappropriately on the vet shortage. In actuality, most of the problems here stem from front desk issues, communication problems, and process issues. The answer to these problems isn't to finger-point and deflect blame. The doctor and staff at Buena Vet are beyond exceptional. Thoughtful, compassionate, and extremely understanding. They care about pets and it really shows. The remainder of this review explains why we switched to Buena Vet... Among other concerns, our previous vet was reluctant to change one of our cat's medications. It was working, but it was also making her ill. So we called several other vets, and found Dr. Sun, at Buena Vet. He changed her meds, on her initial visit, and the previous side effects were quickly remedied. Our cat's condition was one of two possibilities. One would likely respond to conservative care, while the other was an end of life scenario. Knowing this, our goal was to avoid putting her through the series of tests the other vet outlined. I'm so glad we found a caring facility to give a conservative approach a try. Sadly, her condition turned out to be the terminal one, but by not putting her through a series of invasive procedures, she lived the last few weeks of her life active and being herself. We greatly appreciated the care she received at Buena Vet, and we greatly miss her. She was family. I also wanted to mention our former vet charged $140 for an opioid pain reliever in a very tiny bottle. We had to get 2 to 3 drops into a spoon to transfer the drops into an oral (non-needle) plastic syringe. That was a bit difficult. In contrast, the Buena Vet pharmacist provided a better absorbed compound, which she placed into measured syringes. Oh, and the cost, in comparison, was just $45. While what our former vet did might be considered as standard in some regards, what Buena Vet did was exceptional in all regards. I was referred to Dr. Jeff Ohm at Buena Animal Hospital when my dog was extremely sick yesterday and I was facing the heartbreaking possibility of putting her down. Thankfully, Furry Funding and Cathy stepped in durning my time in need and generously covered the cost of the visit. Dr. Jeff was absolutel incredible. He got my dog eating again and on the road to recovery. I drove an hour to see him, and it was well worth the trip. He's not only compassionate but extremely knowledgeable clearly a vet who truly cares. I'm beyond grateful to both Furry Funding/Cathy and Dr. Jeff for saving my dog's life. I have been a customer here for several years. I should've known it was time to find a new vet when our beloved doctor of over 4 years decided to leave along with another doctor for some strange reason. But I decided to stick with them. Here's why this was a MISTAKE. HUGE!!! These people are incompetent. Mary told me today that they don't have permanent doctors anymore. You never know who you'll get. It's nice being able to establish a relationship with your vet and not having to explain your pets special needs on every visit. This front end is loud and comes off looking totally chaotic. They are full of excuses for not treating your pet in a timely manner. And seemingly not responsible for anything that they fall short of. In fact I was charged for a blood and urine panel and I did not get the urine panel. I only found out today after an impersonal email and phone call with their so-called manager Mary that I was charged on Friday but services weren't rendered. The assistant that I first spoke to today told me that I could be refunded or scheduled to come in at another time for the urine sample. Mary said that she wouldn't refund me. And then she basically told me to F' off. That she'll send my pets records wherever I want. And DON'T COME BACK. After our 2 hour visit last Friday you would have thought that they could have told me, called me or refunded me for the panel I didn't receive. I spent almost $300. Instead I'm yelled at and accused of being in a hurry after 2 HOURS of waiting. Really??? MARY HUNG UP ON ME TODAY. I ASSUME EMBARRASSED OF THE LACK OF CARE, KNOWLEDGE AND SITUATION THAT SHE HAS NO ACCOUNTABILITY FOR. IM NOT SURE IF ILL BE REFUNDED BUT IT AIN'T OVER YET. On another note the back end care seems to be adequate. There was a nice woman I think her name was Sonja that helped us out. But there is a lack of communication with patients. They will sacrifice your pet for someone else's. In fact that's what they told me on the phone. How would you like it if your cat was in an emergency?" That was 1 of their excuses for not giving my pet the care and attention he deserved but I was charged for. I hear OHANA is very good as well as the Cat Doctor. Or go to SP where doctor Sama went to work. I overheard the vet tech while i was on the phone today in the background saying that they couldn't get the urine on Friday so they didn't. Crucial for getting an analysis. Nobody told me this. Instead I was accused of rushing and being in a hurry after TWO HOURS. They didn't tell me anything but they charged me. When the help is standing around gossiping loudly talking while you're waiting for your pet and talking about going out to dinner in front of customers for two hours it's NOT OK. If your someone that has camera access PLEASE LOOK AT THE CAMERAS! YOU'LL SEE WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT. Not cool. Sneaky antics, unprofessional attitude,lazy and loud front end does not make a good veterinary. I apologize for any run on sentences or not making clear sense. But it's tough when you're trying to get quality care for your pet from a business you trusted and instead you're shunned and yelled at for just asking for your cat back and blamed for the care not given. We have had a few problems with this office and wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt, but after today will no longer be going here. I will say that aside from the lack of a consistent veterinarian I have not had a problem with the doctors themselves, but rather the office and their poor communication. Last year we lost our cat to gastric lymphoma and he had received his work up and care here. Towards the end of his life we needed a refill on the steroid we were giving to treat him and the vet who had formally seen him was not in for several days. The front desk refused a refill or to let us speak with the vet there that day. For several days in a row we requested to personally speak with the vet that was on and eventually he did return our call and provided a refill. This seemed unnecessary as our cat was an established patient of the practice and was already suffering in his last days. I understand there is a veterinary shortage, but this clinic is staffed by many different vets who cover multiple other locations and are only there sporadically. This leads to a lack of continuity of care and the unwillingness to provide a refill for an established cancer patient who was dying seemed unnecessarily cruel. Today, our other cat had an appointment for sedation, vaccinations, and labs for a longstanding thyroid problem. I dropped her off at 815 and no one asked about when she last received her thyroid meds. I got a call at 1145 (after they had already started her sedation) asking this question. They then informed me she may not be able to have the labs because she had not had her AM dose. I requested to speak with the vet who they said would return my call. In the meantime, I confirmed with a pubmed article and a friend who is a veterinarian that her timeline should be okay for labs. At 1245 I got a call that she was awake from her sedation and ready to be picked up. I inquired about the labs and they told me they had not drawn the labs. I asked why I was not called to discuss while she was already sedated when I had requested to speak with the vet and they said he was now in an emergency. I said I would like a call later in the day when he was out. I went to pick her up and the clinic manager happened to be at the front desk. I explained the situation. She did apologize and got the vet to speak with me. Long story short, there was a breakdown in communication at multiple points from the office that lead to her being partially sedated and then woken up without her labs drawn or vaccinations that were due given. This could have all been avoided if they had inquired about her meds when I dropped her off at 815 or called me to discuss. This was an unnecessary sedation and traumatic experience for our elderly cat with no benefit. After discussion with the vet it seems the estimate they provided was also inaccurate and never run by him (which was a drop in the bucket, but further shows the lack of organization here). I would not recommend this office and we will be transferring our cat to a different clinic in town. read more

I found Buena Vet based on a recommendation from a co-worker and I am beyond satisfied with the care provided. The ease and friendliness of making an appointment was my first hint that this place was going to be a winner. Our tech was Ana, and she was as sweet as they come. You can tell the love and care she puts in her initial assessment. Dr. Heikes saw us and spent over an hour listening to all my questions/concerns. I do not recommend this vet facility to anyone. Before you pass judgment on this negative review, ask yourself why are most of the doctors leaving this facility. I currently know of 4 within the last few months that have left this facility in a hurry. Very telling in my opinion. This vet charged my daughter for services they didn't perform and charged her for. After she discovered this and notified front end staff and manager Mary, Mary told her never to come back and dropped her cat and my cat Monte too! I guess Mary can't except her mistakes and doesn't like having them pointed out to her. Both of our cats are seniors and require daily life saving medications and require a doctor's perscription. the actions by Mary especially is unacceptable. She should not be in charge of any facility. Besides this dispicable behavior she doesn't know how to run a front end. You walk into this facility on most days with loud talking, gossiping and disregard for customers and their pets. Blame the management, right? This morning (Friday, October 16th 2020) I had the most disappointing and unfortunate visit I've ever had at Buena Vet. And quite frankly rude, insensitive and lacking all empathy (Thanks Sherri) for my situation. Back in early June, my parents dog "Lady" developed a couple of bumps on her left leg. Clearly unusual, I took her to the family vet for well over 13 years, Buena Vet (When we first started going there, they had great doctors as well as great office management but as the years went on, the doctors changed as well as the front desk people. Medical Director BRANDON HEIKES told me he was concerned about one of the bumps so he wanted to do a biopsy. I trusted he knew what he was talking about and even in her advanced age (11) I assumed it was what needed to be done. We learned that Lady had a mass cell tumor (cancer). One day I was in LA and I learn from my sister that Lady's lump is bleeding badly! She had to be rushed to the hospital. It was there my sister learned that the original prognosis was detrimental to Lady's situation. She should've received comfort care because of her age. Not at all what Heikes had told me. They wanted to know why she didn't get an x-ray which would've been far less intrusive. But now it was too late. She had an open wound on her leg that was never going to heal. So after countless trips to the hospital, bandage changes, pills 3 times a day (28 pills) that I have to administer (I mentioned I live in Los Angeles)The costs are well over 5k. It's been beyond frustrating and inconvenient. But Lady is happy. She eats well, walks. She's pretty much herself sans this massive exposed tumor that never should've been biopsied. That leads me to TODAY. For the past 2 weeks I've been taking Lady back to Buena Vet for her bandage changes at $35 each. The hospital was charging me $71 so it was a considerable savings and I could do two changes a week instead of one. Instead of the tech coming out with Lady as they usually do, "Sherri" walks up to my car window (Hey Sherri, we're kinda in a world pandemic maybe next time you call the customer like everyone else does). She was too close to my car window, so I got out of the car. She proceeds to tell me that by orders or Dr. Heikes (The guy who put us in this situation to begin with) it was now going to cost $100 for her bandage changes! I was SHOCKED! I explained to her that the emergency hospital charges $71. She didn't care. She just kept saying OK. There was no room for negotiation. I was more shocked by how rude she was being to me. Like more rude than I had ever been treated by anyone in customer service. There was absolutely no empathy whatsoever. I asked to speak to Heikes but she said he was busy in meetings, surgery etc. I said well after all that please have him call me. At this point, I'm so frustrated I start to cry. I can't tell you the last time I've cried. I continue to voice my displeasure and she tells me to find a new vet! After all these years! I call her a jerk and an ahole (And even now I don't regret that. That's how rude she was!) I asked to speak to the owner and she said no. She also said Heikes was NOT going to call me back. Thank GOD there were other people waiting for their dogs who witnessed this unfold. They were equally appalled by Sherri's treatment of me! I told them the whole story as I'm about to leave. Sherri comes marching back and tells me to leave the premises before she calls the police! THE POLICE?! She didn't like the fact that I was telling the other customers my story. An unfortunate story that NEVER should've happened. So Lady doesn't have much time left. We've accepted that. But today, Sherri really added insult to injury. My heat is broken for Lady. She's so happy and completely normal except for this thing on her leg that never would've become infected had we not gone to Buena Vet. Had I gone straight to the hospital, she would be fine! Yes she'd still have cancer, but who knows how much more time she would've had. Her age was a tremendously huge factor Heikes did not take into account. Her brother Baron has a lump on his chest but now we know to just leave it alone. The point of all this is when caring for your animals or choosing veterinary care, ASK QUESTIONS! Weigh the repercussions of your decisions. Find out if there are any alternatives and my personal regret, take your pets age into consideration when making those decisions. I trusted Heikes to make that decision and he made a poor one. Buena Vet, specifically Heikes AND Sherri owe my family an apology. No scratch that. They owe Lady an apology. This horrible experience will be with me for the rest of life and most certainly for the rest of Lady's life. read more

I had been trying to schedule a wellness check appointment for my pups for months at Buena Vet. They had been short-staffed and weren't taking in new patients for a while, but I was adamant in trying to get an appointment as soon as it was available because of how friendly they had been on the phone with me during the times I had called. I called last year when one of my mom's dogs got sick. They were very kind and provided me with info on multiple emergency vets. The fact that they made the effort to direct me to a location who could help spoke volumes of their office. I have since been able to bring in one of my pups for a check up and they were absolutely wonderful. I called several vets in the area and they were all booked and didn't seem to care much. I called Buena Vet Madison answered and was so kind. She put me at ease and seemed to genuinely care. They had no availability as this was a Saturday morning and Marilyn was a new patient but she assured me she'd call me with any cancellations. They were still going to see her Monday which was better then any other place where the first available was March 23rd! I got a call maybe 15 mins later to bring her in that morning. I brought her in the staff was very kind and welcoming. What a disappointment. My mom & step dad took their dog Kandy here a few weeks ago. The doctor advised them Kandy didn't have much longer, but they decided to proceed with the surgery to make her more comfortable. They removed the tumor(s) & this past week she wasn't doing well. On Friday, my mom called them 3 times in the morning out of concern for her dog. It took the 3rd call for the receptionist to finally relay a message from the doctor. She basically advised since she wasn't eating or drinking to take her to the ER and euthanize her. The doctor was 'heading out'. This type of customer service is unacceptable. Doesn't matter if it's a Friday & you want to start your weekend. The Doctor or her staff, could have taken 2 min to call & lend a compassionate ear. My step dad put his faith in the doctor and team and knew the surgery would not keep Kandy alive for much longer, but never thought this is how he would be treated when it came to the end of her life. Out of concern for your patient wouldn't you ask your client to bring them in? Without even looking at them, just 'put her down' ? Neither me or my family will ever go back to Buena Vet. The doctor did call & apologize later & assured my mom that they would have seen her before putting her down, but by then, other arrangements had been made at another Vet where Kandy was treated with dignity & love. Customer service leaves a lasting impression! It's important to treat everyone with compassion & kindness. I worked at a vet for quite awhile & I know how it is to have clients waiting in line, dogs barking & phones ringing. You treat the person you are speaking to like they are the most important people in the world. You leave a note for the Dr or better yet, interrupt them! You never know how much the animal on the other end means to the person you are speaking to. This experience is something we will never forget. read more

I couldn't take my dog to the vet today because I'm battling cancer and had chemotherapy so I had to send my 80yo dad up there and these people Took advantage of my father and charged him $75 to put solution in my dogs ears. The last time we were in there for a check up, I bought solution to do it myself. These people take advantage of elderly people, and people with cancer. She tried to claim they bent over backwards for us when they didn't stitch up my dogs leg properly and should've put staples in it The first time. We had to take my dogs back in to get staples because stitches ripped the minute he bent his leg. Like I said, these people lie and try to justify their actions to make themselves look good but we know what's really going on. I had to give them one star they don't even deserve that. I am so grateful to Dr. Martinez and the Buena Vet staff. They are friendly, kind, and would go out of their way to get my pup into the office for last minute appointments if anything urgent arose. They always diligently checked in on my dog the day following our appointment which I thought was very professional and responsible. They were so patient and gentle with my dog who had extreme anxiety at the vet. When we had to put our dog down suddenly, Dr. Martinez and the staff were immensely compassionate and supportive as we made this very difficult decision. I am so grateful for the assistance they gave in making sure our dog left this earth peacefully and surrounded by those who loved her the most. So the energy and the look of the office is fun and lovely. The vets are kind as well, but like all vets unfortunately this place are completely criminal and honestly all of the paperwork and invoices we have received include multiple important mistakes, financial mistakes and dangerous mistakes that have lead to double vaccination of my puppy while leaving out a necessary vaccination. I've had to catch and correct these things on my own. They try to keep you coming back and charge crazy amounts for the minimum. I get that everyone's trying to make money but the compassion and care of this place is more an illusion and even with pet insurance my bills for puppies have been ridiculous. Just really sad they don't encourage natural or at home remedies but rather promote things only they can administer and I'm talking 80 for EACH exam 75 for a ear cleaning 70 for a microscope look and answer 80 for medicine and it goes on and on.- and that's after me saying don't do it and being told the dr was already doing it. Smh I hate it it's awful. A simple over-the-counter cleaning solution would've worked just fine and saved me $385. Smh I'm so disappointed in Buena Vet and wish karma on everyone there whatever it may be. read more

I can not even emphasize in words how amazing this team is. Years ago, and I mean like 20 years ago, my German Shepherd had been hit by a car, she was a disaster in the back of my suburban, flipping out and spraying blood everywhere, and I had three children; nine months, four and five years old watching their dog suffer while no vet or hospital in Ventura would take her. Buena vet DID. Ultimately she was put down but the care I got there and compassion was just amazing. 20 years later here I am again with a brand new puppy, two days old and Parvo symptoms Again, all over Ventura begging people to take this three month old Chihuahua in and treat her as she depletes right in front of me. Not only did they take me in, they revived her and she's an extremely happy and loving pup now. We switched from a local neighborhood vet with whom we had a 20 year/multi-dog relationship. They sold the practice to a national brand pet hospital owned by a big box pet store. The new practice had removed all sense of compassion, connection, and cooperation from the relationship. And we came to feel like burden to them just getting routine services. When we had a critical care issue pop up, the best they offered their long time customer was a drop off appointment a month out. They advised us to find an emergency clinic but said they were probably all at capacity. Before I could finish asking what we should do, I heard "thank you for calling have a nice day" click....bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Thank the Google Gods we found Buena Vet. Our first visit was this same urgent care need and Buena made room for us early next day. The staff was professional and organized, and they have integrated a human-friendly approach to pandemic safety that preserves owner and staff safety with an intentional degree of dignity. The veterinarian was thorough and took as much time as needed, but no more. While the price for our visit was pretty typical, we came away with a sense that we, and Pippa (our two year old pug), got what we paid for. Not many of these businesses left. I wanted to respond to the Buena vet office regarding my review that they didn't like and chose to respond negatively against me, not surprising after the behavior I got from her. My review was 100 percent honest and she is trying to put the blame on me after spending 1300.00 in the office with less than subpar service. Again I'll say the office was a good one until all the vets left at once overnight. They have since made excuses to why. I never put my hands etc in anyone's fast as she's accused me in her response to my review. She was the inappropriate office manager that's supposed to calmly handle these issues. I think she got rude load and crazy because others were in the front office hearing of the over charging and lack of service that she didn't like it. I was also told come in to get a refund just during the card in and when I got there I was refused the refund per her excuse the doctors are busy. How er I paid for overnight results of 220.00 and didn't get that. This is straight lies she responded with in attempt to cover her actions. I have not gone back and would never go back. the office manager was the worst customer experience I have ever experienced in my life. They charged me for service I didn't receive and hope that's still not going on for other customers. I would say to find another office to avoid problems and get your pet the care they deserve. read more

Grateful for the staff at Buena Vet. My little chihuahua had an anaphylactic reaction to her vaccination. I was a mess. Uncontrollably crying, they comforted me not with one staff but many staff.
