Buffalo Exchange buys your clothes for 25% cash or 50% store credit. Or at least theoretically they do, as I've never had them be interested in anything I've dropped off and I've stopped trying. Their website says they take any style, any season, as long as they're in good condition, but I think it can help to call ahead and ask what they're buying (seasonally and trend-wise). They then sell these clothes secondhand. The racks are packed so tight that it doesn't seem like they turn away anything coming in... and not all of it is in good condition or super stylish. Still, if you're willing to elbow your way between crowds and clothing stands, you may be able to find a gem. It looks like their dressing rooms are open as of summer 2024. read more

They have a great selection of clothes, shoes, and accessories. Service seems to always be fast and efficient. I would say everything is priced fairly and my first selling experience with them was great. They give you either 50% store credit or 25% cash of the value of the item you're selling which I also feel is very fair. Also I think they have such a good selection partially because they are pretty strict on the items they take, I think they're the most strict on jeans and sweaters the most. Items do have to be in season for them to buy also but I find this helpful when going to shop for myself. read more

The buyer went on a smug little tangent about how they're only buying "updated" styles of flannels "with unique patterns" while rejecting a bunch of year old J Crew shirts, then proceeded to buy my 12 year old, ratty, shrunken, threadbare, boring green Uniqlo flannel that I brought with me as an afterthought. Then she offered me $3 for it. I had to stop myself from laughing at how absurd the whole thing was. It's totally arbitrary and the whole selling process is just an exercise in self flagellation. My son came home with a bag of clothes from your shop that were so disgustingly dirty. I am in shock. They smelled so bad I made him throw them away. I have been to this store many times with my daughter because they buy used clothes?!? Supposedly because they have never wanted anything she's brought in even though they are practically new since she has a clothing obsession and only wears an outfit so long.., So if your into vintage clothes this might be your store. The lady who worked there wasn't very friendly she ripped some sunglasses away from my grandson saying those are expensive when my daughter was planning on buying them. Update: they were able to get me a refund. The manager at the store did say that in the future I could have bring it back and talk to them about it. I didn't know there would be a stain so I got rid of the receipt and removed the tags from all the items I purchased that day so I didn't know I would have still been able to go back without the receipt or tags on the item. I just took it as a loss. Regardless I'm thankful they were able to give me a refund. I'll be more careful next time before purchasing clothing from any store. read more

Been a seller and shopper for 20 years. They marked me as a "professional" so I could only sell on Thursdays from 4-6 pm. I haven't sold in years, and asked if I could come back and sell just as a "regular" customer, they gave a hard NO and said that I would have to have a manager present in order to sell. I used to be friendly with the staff and on a first name basis with many of the managers. I even alerted them when their buyers or sellers were cheating (giving me extra credit), or unprofessional. The customer service was great, staff friendly. I would disappointed in the staff who priced my items. I brought them a cashmere scar easily worth 60 bucks that never been One and I told them it was from Dubai. I also bought them a nice leopard scarf, a silk scarf. All the scars were silk or cashmere. I like this store, but I feel like they really rip you off with how much store credit and cash they offer for super nice stuff...makes me sad...also the dressing room lighting is TERRIBLE, also the mirrors are warped. I have been shopping here for years and honestly, i am very disappointed in the quality of merchandise of this store. This use to be the spot where i could find good/unique vintage. Now? Its full of fast fashion garbage: romwe, shein, that kind of garbage. It use to be a mix, brandy melville, zara, h&m etc. but its gotten worse over the years as websites like shein have taken over the thrifting market. Thrift stores are absolutely full of it, and its now reflecting in the consignment market. I brought in things to sell & honestly its a hit and miss sometimes always. I dont expect them to buy everything. HOWEVER: They never failed to purchase any romwe/shein garbage! They will pass on real, genuine 90s vintage but will buy allllll, and i mean ALLLLLL the dropship garbage from china. And the evidence is clear when you go through the racks, its allllll fast fashion garbage. I tend to only buy mens shirts now because theyre actually pickier about that stuff and it ends up being better quality than the womens section. But its rough here. read more

Agreed with the previous reviewer. Reselling is a nightmare. I brought 5 Costco bags of clothes. I used to be able to make $200 at least every time I visit when I bring that many clothes/shoes/accessories. This time in line for 30 minutes only for them to take very few items. my wife and i are visiting portland from st. louis and we saw this unique thrift shop so we decided to stop here and check it out. we walked inside and their was a ton of clothes and shoes everywhere which you would expect from a store like this. they had a lot of variety for different styles of clothing. i barely even found shoes that were my size. most of it was pretty pricey though considering you can find the same stuff at plato's closet for a 1/3 of the costs. we did find some cool shoes for my brother in law which those were a great price. the staff was friendly and one of the cashiers asked how our day was going, that goes a long way. we probably wouldn't shop here again unless they did like a bogo sale. read more

I'm a very loyal customer & have been buying/trading primarily at this Buffalo for 20 years now. I even worked at the downtown location in college as a buyer for a year. I usually make my way out to the Hawthorne location once a month to trade. This is how I get new clothes in my wardrobe primarily. I can't tell you how many customers I have referred; even going through my friends items to help the buyers not have to look through things they would definitely not buy bc of condition. For once I made it twice in a month & was thrown out of both stores just bc Christina put a hold on my account. Last time I saw her she asked me why I had so many dresses, profiling me as a trans person (I am a very obvious trans masculine person). Offended & shocked, I just said the truth at the time -- I used to buy for a tiny vintage boutique in Sellwood. Like I had a small rack that's half of a wall I sometimes add clothes to very part-time. She then told me I can only come in on Thursdays at a specific time window when I'm working. So I came on a Friday again bc that's my day off. I had two (not huge) totes of good, newer items to sell, mostly from my personal wardrobe. Got up to the counter finally & was shamed by Christina saying they couldn't buy from me that day. I explained I actually have left my buying position at the boutique & she still wouldn't help me. When I went to the downtown location after I found she had called them to warn them of me. I pleaded my case, explaining I actually don't buy any longer -- I was still seen the door after one of the managers said they'd "call the regional manager & look into it." Which never happened -- I followed up. They said there was no way to verify I'm not a buyer anymore. So I'm moored to Thursdays when I'm working. I was treated like a criminal so unjustly. This isn't an issue of time as Christina says. If It were, they'd keep track of how many times customers bought instead of this blanket "policy." I do genuinely like this place, but only as a shopper. They have great pieces if you're looking for good clothes and don't mind higher prices. I give it two stars for 2 reasons: 1. Although the clothes are high quality, they're sold at regular prices. Most clothes you could buy new at the original store for the same price, which is disappointing. 2. Reselling is a nightmare. I stood in line for 30 minutes only for them to take none of the items I brought it, even though they sell a similar range of items I brought in. I'm done with this place. Went to sell there and the buyer took a big pile of my items, gave me the total, had it tagged with the prices, and when she was about to close out with me a manager picked through it and told her to reject most of what she already accepted. It was nice stuff too, when I regularly see things for sale there that are straight up stained and nasty. I understand they can't buy everything, it's a hit or miss situation, but to tell me the prices and then go back on it to a fraction of the amount isn't right. Either train your buyers differently, or in this case let them serve the customer and coach them after the fact. read more

I have been shopping and selling clothes at this store for almost 20 years now (wow, I'm old!), mainly because it is one of the few conveniently located consignment shops in Portland. After seeing this place evolve over the years, I will say that the customer service has definitely gotten better. There often used to be an elitist hipster vibe, and now it's more of a friendly hipster vibe, which I appreciate. They also do a better job now of explaining why they didn't buy your items so that at least you don't feel totally rejected. That being said, there are still issues. For example, I wanted to sell some clothes during COVID because I had accumulated a pretty good number of items in good condition and still pretty on trend. This included several of my husband's and my winter coats. I called in advance to set up an appointment, and the phone recording said they were accepting items from all seasons (it's January). I also saw the same thing on their website. It was easy to set up an appointment, as well, so that was all good. They are taking the virus seriously and doing everything they can to be safe--great! I don't come down to Hawthorne very often anymore because I live further away now, I have a newborn, and it's just harder to get over there these days. So, I decided to make a little excursion of it and bring my baby, dog, and husband so that we could walk around the area while waiting for them to look at my stuff. It turned out that out of two big bags full of what I consider to be perfectly sellable items, they took absolutely nothing. The buyer was nice about it, but she said although I had some "great items", they were out of season. She said they weren't taking winter stuff anymore. This was seriously annoying because their phone recording and website said otherwise, and if I had known that, I wouldn't have wasted my time coming. I had to lug back both giant bags to my car, which I had to park several blocks away, because I guess they aren't donating stuff anymore. I get that they have a business to run and don't blame them for not taking stuff they can't sell or don't need, but at least give people accurate information so that they won't waste their time. I've had nothing but good experiences here. For years I've brought in my clothes for consign credit, and then I'll buy things with that credit. It's a beautiful nonstop cycle! Store credit: usually $30-$200 given each batch. Clothing options: there's always something! sometimes too simple in my opinion, but that's not bad if that's what you want. Clothing quality: I think I've only had one item come home with a coffee stain. And every once in a while, a button is half loose, so first thing I do is see it tighter. Staff: super nice and staying sane among the chaos. This place is always busy when I'm there. Consignment season: do keep in mind the season, and the originality of your items. For example, I brought in a non-Levi denim jacket in great condition, and they declined because they needed to prioritize due to their large quantity of items. If this is inconvenient to you, I recommend also bringing your stuff to a Buffalo Exchange in another city like Eugene. I have to travel from Bend, but sometimes I'll need to make a loop to Portland, Seattle, then Eugene; and consign at each one to get credit for 90% of the clothing. Brands they carry: this is not specific to Buffalo, but the amount of fast fashion items from Shein do wind up at the store. When they do, they are usually a better quality and compare to some brands we are familiar with. There is a crazy abundance of Free People at this store location. Size 10 shoes actually have great quality picks most of the time. Pertaining to plus size: I agree there is not much available in these sizes. Dresses and shirts you could find looser fitting items, but body hugging item you probably wouldn't find in a 18+ here unfortunately. Perhaps opportunity to open a plus size specific branch - not to segregate, but so you can have a *true abundance* of sizes and styles! read more

Due to covid you have to make an appointment to have them check out your clothes. My friend and I went and the whole process was quick and painless. Super friendly from start to finish. I've been here a few times and was about to go again today until I started reading the reviews and remembering why I fee like crap after every visit. The last time I went I took bags full of clean gently used clothes from both my husband and my closets. The only thing they bought from me what a pair of black and gray washed rose print pants I got from Walmart!!! Seriously??? I lugged a bunch of clothes, good jeans and in fashion shirts and flannels and they wanted my Walmart pants. It's a lot of work in a busy neighbor hood for that. It makes me wonder if they purposefully only buy petty stuff in hopes that you won't want to haul it all back home and leave it there for donation.. makes sense for them right? I brought my clothes there last weekend. My clothes are in excellent condition and some of them there brand new. All those advertisements on IG made me feel like this should be a really good place to sell my stuff and get some cash. My impressions: * The staff at the counter was extremely slow. * Their choice on clothes selection is wired, they take in clothes which I was thinking have weaker chances. * Those girls are not even looking at the clothes, and they need to chat altogether to tag them which is taking quite a long time. * So, from my two bags of clothes they took 2 pair of jeans and I got $7.50. So many people are leaving bad reviews because Buffalo didn't buy their used clothes they were hoping to sell. Just because *you* think your clothes are great and desirable, doesn't mean they will sell there. Buffalo is not promising that they want to buy all of your clothes that you don't want/simultaneously think are so great, they are offering to possibly give you money for clothes you'd otherwise have to donate or list online and ship out to a buyer, if you were lucky enough to make a sale digitally. I frequent this Buffalo location super often and I've gotten several amazing pieces that I've never seen elsewhere. So many compliments on the clothes I've gotten here! AND so many thrift stores in Portland don't accept returns, so I love that I have 5 days to get store credit here. TLDR: Don't trust these salty reviewers. Definitely go! I've never tried to sell a stitch to B.E., but I witnessed a friend who tried to. They took almost nothing of a her (absurdly Portland-esque) clothing. Stuff I could find the likes of on their rack. I didn't care they didn't take her stuff, but their attitude...oh man, wow. "We deigned to take this one item now praise us" attitude is so obnoxious. Now as someone who has tried to buy things? UGH. This place is laid out like Forever 21 - aka smooshed, squashed and good luck thing finding any sort of clothing. It's horridly organized (shock) and overpriced (less shock). With my to-go Thai food in tow, I thought I'd make a quick pit stop in here to see why there were so many people hitting the shopping scene hard on a Friday night at 9 p.m. Needless to say, I ate my coconut curry cold that night. Buffalo Exchange is a mixture of used and new items and allows customers to even trade. Prices were in the ballpark of what I'm willing to pay for used/vintage high-quality wearables with dresses priced around $15 and like new tweed winter jackets starting as low as $20. With the voice of Mcchounaughey from Dazed and Cofused "Alright, Alright, Alright." Other items you'll find: scarves, shoes, great window displays, a fairly even amount of items in both men's and women's "departments" and plenty of dresses for those of us who are too lazy to put on multiple layers. Next time I'm in Portland, I'll come ready - because not only were the prices friendly, but the state doesn't have sales tax to boot. read more

I have known about Buffalo Exchange since living in Texas. But the closest one was all the way in downtown Dallas and I did not live close, so I really didn't know much about what the place was except that it was a used clothing store. It wasn't a place that I would have gone to because I got the "Goodwill" feeling about the place. I was wrong. I've popped into this location a couple of times and just shoes alone it's worth coming in here. On this peticular visit, I was selling clothes, but I did find a sweet Goorin Bros. hat for only $15, normally over $40-$60. I saw some decent shirts as well. I guess I will have to make my way here more often, gotta find a new style, or upgrade my wardrobe. I need help... : ) Enjoy. read more

This review is in regards to selling your clothes there. They offer 50% in merchandise credit, or 30% cash. I'd suggest calling to see what they need so that way you get more bang for your buck. Also keep in mind that it's up to them to what they'll take. I noticed as well location is key: a sequined top may not sell at Hawthorne, but maybe Downtown will take it. Buffalo is a great place to get used clothing. While it will never replace thrift store shopping for me, it is nice for finding current fashions quickly. [This is a review of my shopping experience, not selling] Out of the three thrift stores I checked out this morning (Buff Ex, Goodwill, and the Crossroads across the street), overall this place offered the nicest stuff, was the most organized, and for the most part had the best prices. Saw mall brands ranging from Zara to Loft to Topshop, some Betsey Johnson, Mountain Hardware, plenty of BR and J Crew too.. Not gonna lie some of the stuff in there looked homemade, but everything was clean and in good shape (unlike at Crossroads where things I otherwise would've tried on had stains or tears). Pleasantly surprised to find a lot of things with tags on. And like I said, organized -- by type of clothing and size. Nice helpful dressing room attendant. They dont give you a bag when you buy something (but do let you donate 5 cents to one of their selected charities), so either bring your own or buy one of their reusables for $2. read more

I've been to better Buffalo Exchanges in the area and other states, and do agree that this one is a little overpriced in comparison to the other ones. It probably has something to do with the district it's located in. Everyone knows that hipsters will give up their first born in order to wear vintage clothing. Supply and demand people! Gotta love that capitalism aspect. I've been here quite a few times, and see them purchasing some seriously horrendous pieces, so I'm not sure why some people here got rejected when they tried to sell their stuff back. Maybe I'm just not cool enough to know what's hot right now, but trust me when I say that some lady sold back what appeared to be macramed hotpants when I was there the last time. I would also say that this place does smell like someone took a pee on top of a dump that sits on top of vomit, but don't all secondhand stores? I kinda like that I appreciate my own personal hygiene when I walk in there, and walking out is like rediscovering your olfactory senses. All in all, this place did have a pretty great selection of stuff. I never see much in the way of shoes, but everything else is great. In relation to what you'd pay in other retail stores, this place is a bargain. I wouldn't travel distances to go to it, but I'd definitely stop by if I was in the area. read more
