What a pleasant surprise! We very virtually "stranded" at Catalina Canyon Resort outside of Avalon on a Wednesday night when the hotel's restaurant is closed. Pizza was appealing to us and Buffalo Nickel came thru for us. A small pepperoni, mushroom & black olive pizza plus a house salad with Italian was delivered up the hill to our room in 30 minutes. Total $16. We tipped our driver $5 and enjoyed our yummy pizza and salad (+ red wine from our hotel) and Buffalo Nickel saved the evening! They seem to specialize in Mexican food & Pizza. I've eaten at the Buffalo Nickel several times and have enjoyed my dining experience every time. I first visited the Buffalo Nickel based on the recommendation of several friends who live on the Island. They eat here all the time. It's not located in the main touristy area, it's about a mile away. The restaurant has a shuttle that will pick you up and drop you off in the main tourist area of Avalon. The decor is rustic and comfortable. They have indoor and outdoor seating. The staff have always been fantastic. The menu has a good variety of Mexican food, salads, seafood, BBQ, steaks, and a full-bar. The portion size is very generous and the quality if very good. Every meal I've eaten here has tasted great. The prices are reasonable, especially when considering the portion size and quality. The drinks at the bar at good, a little pricey, but no more than all of the other bars in this tourist town. I will definitely eat here again during my next visit to Catalina Island. read more

Take the complimentary shuttle to this location (tips graciously accepted). You seat yourself inside or outside. Monday is Pasta Night! For $12 a plate you choose a pasta, meat/seafood, and sauce then it's cooked right in front of you outside. I don't know if it was all you can eat because one serving is pretty filling in itself. Great food and it's fresh. If you are there any other day than Monday, the service gets slow. We waited about 15 minutes for our drinks and to order food. There was virtually no one else in this restaurant so there was no excuse for the wait. By the time we got our food it was lukewarm. I would only suggest going for their pasta night. Going any other day is a bit of a disappointment. read more

Very lucky for us, somebody had called for the shuttle earlier and had waited 45 mins already by the time we got there... We only had a 3 min wait. Some of my girlfriends and I went to Catalina a couple of days ago to celebrate my birthday. When the time came to choose a restaurant, I looked at the tourist trap restaurants, with menus that did not impress me and with astronomical prices. My friends and I were chatting with a local and we asked him where the best place to eat was. He immediately called someone, spoke to them in a combination of English and Spanish and within a minute, a shuttle van was there to whisk us to the Buffalo Nickel, which was 10 minutes away right next to the heliport. Being that it was such a beautiful day (and off season), we opted to seat outside. Three of us ordered buffalo burgers and one ordered the fish and chips. All of us were pleased with our meal, the service and the prices. Apparently, this is a favorite among the locals. The same guy shuttled us back to the main drag. I would recommend somewhere else unless you need a place that is close to the heliport. Chicken fajitas: $20.99 for two people (they give you two plates of rice and beans and serve the fajitas on a dope sizzling plate rice and beans: pretty standard, what you'd find at any Mexican restaurant (beans are a little oily with the cheese though) carnitas: pretty meh. We came to try out the free birthday meal offer. It takes them a while to send out a shuttle because it is also a delivery van. I was a little irritated by the wait for the shuttle but the driver was friendly and it was a very short drive. There was almost no one there because it was a drizzling a little. We had such a good time celebrating a birthday over Mother's Day weekend. We made reservations for 8 people and they were so friendly and attentive, the brother's who own it were amazing. The food was very good and they made a big deal of singing happy birthday to us. They have a free shuttle that comes and gets you and takes you about a mile and a half down the road on the ocean. I just got to give them 5 starts because the service was amazing! The food was ok - nothing special but good! They brought the drinks and food as well as the bill super fast - nothing to complain there! I was there in low season and it was a quiet night. The thing that did it for me was the shuttle service! I was by myself and when the shuttle showed up, he advised that he has to run two deliveries and that he'd be back soon. Instead I asked if I could come - no problem - the driver and I had a great time delivering food and I got so see more of the island that way. On the way back - I was the last person to leave - the driver had yet another delivery and since I had nothing better to do, I asked if I could come along again - he drove me all the way to the top so I got to take pictures of the lit up harbor BONUS! I would have given this restaurant 4 stars but they shorted me on my change. Our bill was $54.64 and I gave them a $100 bill. If you do the math, I should have gotten $45.36 back. For as long as we waited I would have thought they'd offer us a water. Then the lady was still having an attitude towards us just by sitting inside at the bar. To make matters worse, the shuttle to bring us back to town disappeared and we had to spend 15 dollars for a taxi. Cell service for verizon and tmobile didnt work here. I love the idea that you get a free Birthday meal here if it's your birthday! They have a separate birthday meal menu to order from. I got the beef nachos because I wanted something light because I was spending the whole day at Catalina. Somehow, they forgot the beef on my nachos. I told them, they put beef on top of cheese and another layer of cheese on top of that again. It was too cheesy for me. We also ordered the fish and chip, which also wasn't a very good idea. I do like the idea that they give out a free meal for your birthday, and also since the location of the restaurant is a bit further they do provide a shuttle.
