Saddened by my recent experience to Buffett's Candies. They were completely out of Pinon rolls (which I understand there were crop issues with the most recent harvest, so that wasn't a big deal, just disappointing), but then I chose to make my own half pound assortment and was told there is now an additional $2 up-charge for choosing my own mix. When I asked why, I was told that See's Candies is now charging extra as well as other stores. The employee then proceeded to tell me about Buffett's expansion plans for the west side, AZ, and TX and how they were now streamlining the packages (only red wrap is now used), the uniforms, etc. It really doesn't matter to me what See's or the competitors are doing/charging. If there was a true financial need for the charge (like recovering from COVID, I wouldn't mind supporting my favorite local candy shop to get them through a tough time... but to turn around and then tell me about their huge expansion plans just felt plain greedy and corporate. The hometown feeling and exceptional customer service just disappeared and I was so sad when I left. read more

This is the best candy store in the state. Buffett's is a landmark in Albuquerque. They offer pinon candy you can't find anywhere else. The pinons' they use are local.. very fresh/full of flavor. True story: I almost died once because of Buffett's candies. See, ever since I was old enough to talk, every time we'd drive by this place I would scream at the top of my lungs "GIANT CANDY CANE!!!!" My dad taught me this. He used to do the same thing with his brothers when they were little. If I was lucky enough, we'd get to stop for some treats. Anyway, when I was in college I was riding in a car with a group of friends when we passed Buffetts, and out of pure habit I screamed my mantra -- thus scaring the wits out of the driver and we almost careened directing into said giant candy cane. It was worth it. Every single Easter of my life I've been given a chocolate bunny from Buffetts. A REAL CHOCOLATE BUNNY. Not that hollow waxy stuff you get at the drug store. All of the chocolate is amazing, I'm partial to anything with pinon or caramel. They also have a pretty decent selection of sugar free chocolates for those who've found themselves with the diabetus. Hands down, though, the best thing about Buffetts is the staff and the atmosphere. They are friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable, and dare I say it, grandmothery. I love this place and as soon as my kid can talk I'm going to teach him to yell "GIANT CANDY CANE" and I'll make sure the Easter bunny knows where to get his treats each year. read more

Have you ever fantasized about going back in time? Does your mind drift as you visualize yourself sitting in H. G. Wells time machine? Or driving the De Lorean in Back to the Future? Do you have a deep yearning of going back to the "good ole days" and experiencing first hand or again what it was like 60 years ago? Well look no further New Mexico. The desert. Where time stands still. You can park a car on the street and it would be there 50 years later. The paint and upholstery would be faded, the rubber cracked, but the car structure would as sturdy as ever. Not rusted. Not rotted. And in some cases so are the people and the businesses they run. As you turn the corner on 4th Street, you notice something very out of place. A very long, very white building, no features as you first see the back of the building. Then you suddenly see this 50 foot hand painted, curved Christmas candy cane leaning against the building, like someone had hit a telephone pole that landed on the building. You quickly round the next corner to face the front of the building. Again.....very stark. The only visible coloring is a very white freshly painted building with red lettering and accents. To the right is a small hole on the side of the building adjacent to a small window display. That must be the front door. Entering the building you suddenly feel like Marty McFly exiting the DeLorean. The interior is 1950's stark. Nothing fancy inside. Nothing non essential taking away from the main business at hand....selling candy. A few award plaques adorn the walls with a display case of custom candies that are made there. George Buffett started making candy and opened the business in 1957. He still runs the place today. This place feels like it is family owned and run. I am greeted by both an elderly lady and a very young lady. You can sense the changing of the generation guard is wanting to happen but won't happen until it is in good hands. I am patiently attended as I try to absorb all that is around me and make my selection. Buying one of everything wasn't practical so I took my time look around Buffett's is especially known for selling pinon pine nut candy. The pinon pine at the age 25 starts to bear fruit, or nuts. The tree doesn't produce nuts in quantify until it is 75 years old. It then produces havestable quantities of nuts for the next 300 years. The Indians also called these pinon nuts, starvation nuts, because when other crops failed due to the change of weather patterns, the pinon pines continued to reliably produce nuts. Pinon nuts are very very mild in flavor. Plain puffed rice seems to have more flavor So the type of candy used with pinon nuts is important. The standard dark and milk chocolates seemed to over power the taste of the nuts. They make lightly candied pinon nuts and a pinon log which does not overpower the subtlness of the nuts. The candy is made with fresh ingredients like butter and have no preservatives. Unlike Hershey which can sit on your cupboard for over a year, this candy needs to be eaten as soon as it bought. (The longest candy lasts in my house is less than an hour or a few days if i buy several boxes.) I bought 4 half pound boxes of assorted candies for my family to try. Overall, this is very good candy. The chocolate is smooth and neutral so it blends in well with the different fillings and nuts. It is not as sharp and complex as some European (Belgian or Swiss) chocolates. I still prefer See's candies as my all time favorite, but Buffetts is right up there with Rheb's. And FYI, Godiva doesn't even make my list which I rate near Whitman's. Definately worth the stop here if you are in Albuquerque to try the pinon candy and step into a time machine.... read more

If you've ever been to the State Fairgrounds you've probably driven by Buffett's without even realizing it - it's the building with the giant, metal candy cane leaning on its exterior. Outside and, to an extent, inside, it's the sort of candy shop you imagine your Grandma purchasing boxes of candy at, to send off to you and her friends during the holidays or "just because." Perhaps this is because your Grandma has actually been purchasing candy here since the 1970's. No matter, Grandma wouldn't be steering you incorrectly - Buffett's is a true gem. Buffett's stocks everything a candy store should - a variety of chocolates, filled and not, dark and milk, even a little bit of white. Jellybeans, popcorn, brittles, and chocolate shaped according to whatever holiday is nearest are packaged individually around the room. Little children would surely go ga-ga in this store, eyes bright with colored candies, cellophane, and ribbons. You, however, should beeline straight for the counter and request a box - at least 1/2 lb. - of chocolate-covered pinon nuts. Pinon nuts? Yes, those things called pine nuts in other lands, harvested in New Mexico and dipped in chocolate. I'll leave it up to your personal preference as to whether or not you get milk, dark, or a mixture of chocolate. Grab a second box for your co-workers, relatives, anyone else who might want to swoop in and eat your little pieces of heaven. Smile at the woman behind the counter and tide yourself over with a sample piece of chocolate at the counter while she meticulously wraps your box and swipes your credit card. A box will probably cost you less than $10, so you could even pay in cash. Feel free to sample a chocolate-covered pinon in the car, but not if it's a hot day 'cause you know that it'll all melt in the New Mexico heat. What does it taste like? How do you describe utter bliss? The chocolate is smooth and complements the buttery nuttiness and slight crunch of the pinons. You'll know after one bite what I mean. They're even better chilled, pieces snuck out of the box with the fridge door wide open. I recommend Buffett's for a peek into the past and a bite into heaven. The women who work there are pleasant enough, the selection of confections quaint, and the prices not too steep. The boxes of candy make great gifts in a bind or the perfect reward for, well, anything. read more

What can I say that hasn't been said? Recap! We all vividly remember the building growing up--that candy cane is epic! I actually never entered the store until adulthood and thought "whoa this is old school... Hope it's fresh. How do they stay in business? I'll be sad when they close due to the giant chocolate chains..." But I'm happy to see a large support base! Piñon chocolates and other piñon creations are soooooo New Mexico! I just hope they might be able to expand onto fair trade piñons straight from the Native Americans rather than the "trader" in Gallup. Proud local family business! While on a trip to Albuquerque we had the great pleasure of stopping into the Buffett's Candies store on Lomas. I'm not sure that we've ever stepped into a lovelier and more welcoming candy store. The kind woman (Lisa) who attended us could not have been warmer or kinder. She did an excellent job introducing us to the different products. If you are a local or a visitor to Albuquerque there are many interesting and unique businesses to shop or food stops to enjoy and Buffett's Candies is a great place to visit and enjoy the delicious candies they offer year round. I take my out of town guests by so they can grab their green chile popcorn or piñon candies and all can go in their carryon bag. I stop by to shop when I want to send to something special to friends and family instead of the run of the mill box of drug store chocolates. They offer seasonal flavors, the store is always clean, the people are friendly and parking is easy. We stopped by here last time we were in Albuquerque. It reminds me a lot of See's Candies. Back in SoCal, there is practically a See's Candies on every block. They are along the same lines, only Buffett's seems to have a bigger selection. Buffett's had a lot of seasonal themed items when we were there, which make great gifts for family. Buffets! Gotta love Buffets. We've been getting candy there for years. Great chocolate, candied cherries, gummy bears, tangy worms, you name it. My only complaint is that my kids have been trying to get a job there for years! No can do. But I can't hold it against them. If you are in the neighborhood you need to stop by. There's no denying that Buffett's is consistently fantastic! As a kid, it was such a treat to make the occasional trip with my mum and pick up a couple pieces when we were running errands in the neighborhood or visiting my brother at work at a nearby car lot. As a woman in my twenties, I make seasonal trips to buy gifts (or whenever an intense craving for a brown sugar cream strikes). Walking into the store, it often smells like hot chocolate and there's always so much to look at. You've got cute season/holiday related goodies, with everything from white chocolate dipped oreos to chocolate lollies shaped like turtles, and plenty of hearts, santas, pumpkins, and bunnies to be had, depending on the season. Further into the store, you can feast your eyes on New Mexican delights such as pinon caramel rolls (highly recommended) and green chile popcorn (also a hit) as well as classic hard candies, malt balls, pretzels, non-perils, and more chocolate in the shape of things (such as the state or bars of gold) than I could ever know what to do with. Just as any good chocolatier should, they have a big glass case with their wonderfully large selection of chocolates on display. They have an excellent selection of classic, old fashioned flavors. In this way it might remind you of See's, but I promise you the quality and freshness makes Buffett's a superior product. Here's a few I recommend you try: -Molasses Chip -Raspberry Nougat -Almond Nougat -Coffee Cream -Chocolate Cream -Brown Sugar Cream -Chocolate Covered Cashews -Tango Mints (which are phenomenal) I recently tried and liked the dark chocolate truffles and the green chile peanut brittle, which are fairly new additions to the store. The pralines are great for someone who has a sweet tooth but isn't crazy about chocolate (like my Thai coworkers). I hope in the future Buffett's can add a few playful flavors to their list of chocolates. I'd be happy to contribute my creativity if anyone is interested. I'm thinking along the lines of Dark Chocolate Blackberry Creams, Peaches and Cream Truffles (you heard it hear first!), Red Chile & Cinnamon Milk and Dark Chocolate Creams, and White Chocolate Green Chile Pistachio Nougat. Buffett's could not be more perfect for holiday gifting and the prices are fair for the level of quality. I have never and will never consider Buffett's expensive. The prices are low compared to Albuquerque's The Candy Lady, See's, or Godiva. The staff has always been especially friendly and helpful here (to the ladies of Buffett's: I adore all of you!). It's especially fun if they are slow and I can chat and sample away. Finally, I have to say that I would rather get a treat from Buffett's than any bakery, cupcake shop, or frozen yogurt stand in the city of Albuquerque. When you get a mixed box of chocolates, there is usually one that you eat first or if you are really kind and really love someone...save for them because it is their favorite. There is nothing special about this candy but they are sure proud of it- handmade? Yes it is, and when compared to other candy makers, the pieces are TINY - It is my opinion that they overcharge for what you get. I ordered chocolate dipped strawberries and the berries were bad/old, candy didn't have any special tastes or flavors you can't find at better quality candy shops.... not impressed- I will buy my candy at Rocky Mountain chocolates or Sees= hand made as well, fresh and more bang for the buck. read more

It's a classic candy shop and I would recommend stopping here before Easter for some goodies or really anytime your sweet tooth flairs up. I first tried their pinon sampler at the Chocolate and Coffee Festival a few years back and I've been sold ever since. The product is authentic. The chocolate is fresh and tasty and leaves you wanting more. Also, I'm a sucker for pinons and this spot has them --drenched in chocolates! I saw this place on TV. I think Delicious Destinations. I love pinion nuts. My husband bought me for Christmas some of the pinion rolls and the pinion pralines. OMG They were both so good. I don't think they ship them in the summer due to the heat so I lose out on having some for my birthday. BUT next Christmas they will be on my list to Santa again.
