Steve, the owner will be the demise of his own business. Paid $1200 plus to have all of the brakes done on my dune buggy and within 50 miles of driving it the front brake locked up and the pad had fallen apart. Took it back to have it checked out and was told that they didn't do pads!! When I expressed that I assumed the pads had been done at the time of the $1200 brake job Steve told me he didn't like me assuming anything and pushed my keys back at to me refusing to service the car. This whole time he was snarky, dismissive, and highly confrontational continuing to chuckle at his own comments and talk over everyone in the conversation. read more

We had a clutch cable bust on a Saturday drive - sadly! We have never had to service our VW in an emergency so were totally new customers to Bugformance. Notwithstanding that, and the fact that their next appointment was not for 3 weeks, they let us tow our 1972 SB in and leave it so we didn't have to incur two tows while we waited. To our delight and utter surprised, they were able to fix our SB way sooner than we expected and the cost was more than reasonable. I am grateful for their time, attention and good customer service. I've been going here for 4 months and I've got nothing but stellar service. It's weird to read someone didn't get good service. I ask a lot of questions because I'm just getting back into VW's and Steve has been nothing but helpful and fun to talk to. I've interacted with the other gentleman as well, and he is knowledgeable and helpful too. They have had everything I've needed and fair prices as well. Oddly the front counter staff other than Steve are super helpful, friendly, and customer service oriented. Steve, the one guy that should be all those things is absolutely not ! In person or on the phone he doesn't even fake that he is not annoyed and irritated by you and your desire to buy Vw parts. Perhaps if you came in with your parts all selected, located, and invoiced he might be only slightly annoyed to just have to take the money. Steve, if you hate the place, hate answering questions and HATE talking to people then LEAVE !!! Your attitude will single handedly shut that place down. There is too much competition to have to be belittled by you, the fear of dealing with you keeps me from going there at times. read more

Know your information before you go there, probably 3rd time I go in there looking to buy parts and asking questions hoping to get useful information and the response is basically just get eyes rolls and judgmental looks coming from the taller gentleman. I am new to this Volkswagen Club so I understand some annoyance with someone inexperienced asking novice questions, but I hope the rest of the community isn't like this. They are definitely not interested in customer service or making any effort to be generally friendly. Multiple times I've experienced this. Just got off the phone looking to buy a VW bus front emblem to go on a VW themed gift for a friend. Started asking about a 7" logo for a 1968 (started there because that's what my friend has). Don't have it. Then I ask if they have it for other years because it's not actually going on the vehicle. Me, "Do you have a 7" VW emblem for a 1968 bus?" Employee, "No we don't have that size. I don't even know if we can those anymore." Me,"Oh, we'll do you have other sizes in stock?" Employee "Well, we have them for the older ones. But they are way bigger. It won't fit on a '68." Me, "Oh, that's ok, it isn't actually going on the vehicle. How much bigger are the older versions?" Employee, "I don't know, it's way bigger" Me, "What's the diameter?" Employee, "I don't know. I would have to go measure it, but it's just a lot bigger. It won't work on a '68." Me, "Well, never mind then." Sounded put out that he had to answer the phone, bothered that I asked a few questions, and clearly not at all interested making any effort to make an easy sale...let alone giving any thought about company image. OMG! If you have a Volkswagen Bug or are building a buggy you have to check this place out. What am I saying?! If you have a bug you already know about this place!!! So this review is for the newbies. They have everything you need here for your classic or not so classic VW. Once they see you coming in ALL the time (which you will be if you are restoring or fixing up one of these AWESOME cars) they will give you an account and discount your purchases. The guys are all knowledgable and will pretty much tell you exactly what you need to to get your project/repair done, short of doing it for you....although for you NOT SO do-it-yourselfer they do have a shop and will for a fee do it for you. My boys got started in VW's several years ago and they were life savers. I restored a 1967 myself and many of the part came from this local VW store. And pretty much all of the knowledge I needed did too. Our family has since collected and repaired several VW Bugs and helped many others with theirs from the knowledge they learned from this place. These guys are involved in EVERYTHING VW they are always at the local VW events like BUG-O-RAMA happens twice a year, the Niello Ranch Run in April and many others. Been working on a type 1 motor rebuild for a few months. Steve and Will have been very helpful and with very few exceptions, they have had all the parts I have needed and the prices are good. As a fellow small business owner, I very much appreciate their customer service, and follow up. I get that it is possible to order online and probably save a few bucks, but for me, it is worth a bit extra (and we are not talking about huge price differences) to keep a place like this around. SO RUDE. They act like you're annoying them when you call the store, snap at you and laugh at your legitimate parts questions like you're stupid. And way, way, WAY over priced. And they don't give refunds, even if they order the wrong part or can't get your part. Store credit only. Which is a shitty way to do business, if you ask me. Maybe they were just being asses because I'm a girl, I don't know. Twenty years ago when I got my first Bug, this place used to be the place to go when you needed something for your VW, but now it's just an over-priced joke with a bad punchline. AVOID. read more

To start off, it's really awesome having a dedicated classic Volkswagen shop so close to home! That being said, I really wish the guys in the shop reflected that of which the classic Volkswagen community is all about: friendliness. To be honest I dread having to come into this shop for parts, mainly because I feel as if I'm a burden if I ask questions or am not sure about what part I need. The guys just generally don't have a very good sense of customer service. In my opinion, I'd suggest just shopping at JBuggs.com for all your Volkswagen parts needs, unless you're really in a pinch and need a part fast. Also JBuggs is significantly cheaper. It's unfortunate that a business that's been around for so long and is one of the last remaining Volkswagen parts stores seems to be losing it's quality. But hey, maybe that's just cause I'm not an old man with a beard. read more

Just started a bug project and have found this shop to be great help! The staff has been super helpful and friendly. They made sure I got the right parts (different door seals for a convertible for example). I did have some service done when I discovered the difficulty of removing a strut on the front suspension. They offered advice and other details about the service. Their prices for parts are a few more dollars than on-line purchases, but still reasonable. And I'm a girl... so that didn't seem to matter. read more

Bought a bug recently, and found the flywheel had a problem. Took my motor out and took it down to the guys to have the flywheel changed and the endplay set. They found some seriously questionable things done by the people that built the engine. They have been great in helping me resolve this, and very fair on the pricing for all the parts needed. These guys seem to be very committed to keeping the classic VW community going. These guys are awesome, and even when giving bad news they seem to share the pain. Remember to always buy local. Literally the WORST customer service ever in existence! If they weren't the only classic Volkswagen parts in the area I would never go there again. If you call them on the phone they are so unhelpful and rude. It's almost a waste of your time and it seems theirs also. When you go in there, don't expect a greeting. Expect the three gentleman ( I use that term loosely) to kind of glance up at you and continue on with their conversation. You either gotta ask for help from the three stooges or expect to wander around like a chicken with it's head cut off. And when you do go to ask questions, expect them to make you feel stupid (or even have them laugh at you) if you are not an expert at what your talking about. Then expect the most generic and useless response. It seems like what they really want is for you to pay them to work on your Volkswagen, but after the way they have treated me over the couple years of going in and probably over a grand of my hard earned money. I would not let them lay a finger on it (they would probably charged me for that anyways). Not that it's their fault... But they sell the cheapest Chinese and Mexican parts that are not even guaranteed to last a month. I have never tried to return anything because of reviews I have read here. I could only imagine how that would play out ha ha. Now I want to compare them to the Reibes Napa Auto Parts store near my house. The guys at Napa literally knew me by name after a short while of going in there. They almost have my car memorized (although I don't expect this out of them, they probably help a couple hundred people a day!). They treat me like a friend there and go out of there way to help me find what I need. But unfortunately they only carry so much for my now 42 year old car (1973) and eventually they tell me, bugformance probably has it. It's like nails on a chalkboard to hear them say that. There is nothing like driving all the way from citrus heights to downtown to be treated like garbage by the people your handing your pay check to. And for crap parts with no kind of warranty to top it off. I would like to think that maybe the guys there at bugformance have't read their yelp reviews. But I have a good feeling they have, they don't care, and continue to treat the people going into their shop like crap. So if you can find a way around going here, do so. But if your like me and sometimes just need to get it done soon, without waiting for parts to come in from online. Just expect a lame experience. read more

well the guys know there stuff as far as bugs i gotta give them that, but as far as price compatibility they are the worst. WAY WAY over priced and wont work with you at all. i asked if they would price match and though he gave me an answer that sounded like he would work at least a little with me, the end result was he wouldnt budge off his price which was twice plus the amount i could get the carb for on ebay, he wouldnt even cut out the amount the sales tax would be so i could at least get an out the door price. so i picked up my money and decided i could wait the two days it took on ebay read more

I live in Lakeport so must travel some distance to go to a vintage/performance VW store. I think I've been to all of them in the NorCal region. I like to support the "bricks and mortar" stores even though I know I'll pay more compared to online. My belief is that if you don't support the stores, then someday there won't be any. I've been into performance VW's for a long time. However, I don't think anybody at these stores knows me nor knows how serious I am about my hobby. For example, I built my first turbo bug way back in 1973. Many engines and cars between then and now. I consider myself a semi-serious VW hobbyist. When I visit a store I've generally (1) traveled 2+ hours to get to the store (2) needed some part (3) also have some type of issue or problem that I am trying to solve. So, the helpfulness of the counter people is important to me. Fortunately, vintage VW people are generally quite helpful. Some over the top. That is, at every store I go to, except the Sacramento Bugformance store. The last time I was there I asked a very specific question and got a quick "just bring it in and we can fix that". Before I respond, the fat person behind the counter turned and began talking to another Bugformance employee totally ignoring me. Believe it or not, this is not the first time this has happened at that store. So, bottom line: If you want overpriced parts, go the Sacramento Bugformance. If you need advice, go to just about anybody else. read more

Yelp won't let me give them zero stars so here's your gift star. Wow, what a horrible business. I came in and picked up a couple brake switches the other day. So first, they were twice as much as any other place, but I'm supporting a small local business so I guess that's ok. Then when I get home I find that they are just slightly bigger than the ones I need. I return to the store less than an hour after buying them. I go to the guy I bought them from and tell him they are too big. He says that's too bad but they don't give refunds. Huh? I just bought them like minutes ago. He tells me no way, can't return them. Absolutely ridiculous. After a couple minutes of me trying to calmly explain that it seems kind of dumb not to except a return he graciously offers me store credit. That way I can spend more money at an incredibly over priced rip off joint. Seems pretty fair to me. Do yourselves a favor, stay away from this place, they are clueless when it comes to customer service. read more

This place is the worst ever, put a clutch in my car, and used old parts and charged me for new ones, my vw also had a terrible oil leak after the repairs, i hired a different mechanic to help me with the oil leak about 2 weeks after the bugformance work, that was when we noticed all the used parts in my new clutch job, avoid. read more

Overpriced, rude, and horribly run business. I will never step foot in this store again. I ordered some interior stuff for my bug and pre-paid up front. When my stuff came in it was the wrong color and they told me they couldn't get the color I originally wanted. Instead of simply refunding my money and letting me be on my way I was told I could only have store credit. Wow! Unbelievable I could see if I had bought the wrong thing and the actually had the correct item to replace it with that would be acceptable. This on the other hand was 100% their mistake! I needed the door panels, and I needed them in the color I ordered them the COLOR THAT IS SPECIFICALLY ON MY ORIGINAL INVOICE, I don't need store credit for something else. I needed my money back so I could try and find what I needed elsewhere since they could not get me the ones I needed in the color specified. I was treated with an attitude and no remedy.
