West county mall location. Very busy with parties and kids running everywhere! Plenty of bear choices, outfits and add on's. Sales were available today on select bears. Limited staff so long wait times on fluffing the bear, recording voice and checkout. Staff were friendly. I found my birthday bear yay! You can be an adult and still love building a bear . The only reason I'm giving it 2 stars is because the girl was great with my 2 year old. We walked up to the kiosk (Deptford Mall location) and informed the worker that it was my son's 2nd birthday. I had never been to BAB for a birthday.. and apparently there's ONE birthday bear you can get for the price of your child's birthday ($2 for second birthday, $3 for third birthday, etc.) I had no idea. We stupidly assumed that when the girl said to us after we told her we were there for his birthday "oh great THESEEE are the ones you can choose from" *showing us a row of animals* that those were the birthday animals. I let my son pick out 2 because she said they were "buy one get one with the red sticker for $15." My son made the dogs he picked and we by-passed all of the ridiculous things they try to upsell you. We get to the checkout and the girl says it's $60. Now I have zero problem paying this amount IF we didn't make it clear that we were there for my son's birthday. She then said (in a super condescending tone) that we had to specially ASK for that certain bear and birthday special. Like how am I supposed to know that? She 100% knew what she was doing and upsold us because we didn't know what the "birthday special" meant. Super shady. read more

I took my 9 month old daughter to this build a bear for her first time getting a bear while her aunty and uncle where visiting from California. The first gal who helps us was very kind and answered all of our questions. Her name is Jenny, she was very nice and helped us make our sound bite, she also showed us some costumes we had questions about online. After she directed us to another gal, her name is Maddy. I took notice she was very kind to the couple in front of us. They had a baby maybe a few months older than mine and she did all of the cute voices and actions you see the employees do online. When it was my turn with my daughter instead of asking if I wanted to put my foot on the peddle or my daughters (as she did the couple before me) she demanded I put my foot on the peddle in a very rude manner. I was very surprised. She was so kind to the couple in front of us. She made me very uncomfortable and I asked my sister to video the bear being stuffed. The gal completely changed her attitude the second the camera came out. She started to act nice but the minute my sister turned the camera off she was rude again. She only smiled while we were recording but once it was off it was back to a frown. I felt as though we were a bother and it really hurt my feelings because this was my daughter's first time and my sister and her husband flew all the way out here for us. I didn't want to say anything because the other gal was so kind but I noticed one difference from my group and the group she was kind too.... They were a white family and my family is a Mexican American family. I have been treated this way before in Missouri but never this close to St. Louis. This was very disappointing. read more

My daughter actually picked the "birthday bear" you pay your age so we got the bear for $9! The outfit she picked ended up being 50% off so we left spending under twenty dollars! We took my 2 year old grandson to Build a Bear for a birthday bear. We told the girl upon arrival it was to celebrate his birthday. My daughter and I have not been to this store for years. We assumed that when we told the girl that we were celebrating his birthday that she would show us the animals he could select for the birthday special. We did not know it was one specific bear or we would have guided him to that selection. Upon checking out the cost was $59 for the two items he selected. I questioned the amount and it was then the girl told us there was a specific bear he had to chose. I felt that she purposely did not inform us of the birthday bear so that we would spend more. At that point my grandson was hugging his purchases so we could not take them out of his hands. I don't know if the workers receive a commission but I felt that we were duped. They should be up front about what is available for the birthday club. read more

So expensive for what it is/does and the quality isn't that great. My son wanted a particular bear and we were told it does all these great things. It "bear-ly" does anything. I even reached out to customer service who gave me the run around and wrong information as you can see by my screenshot. I went to the store and confirmed that it does NOT repeat what you say. Just moves its ears and hums a little. I think it is purposeful that the web description just says it "responds" to your voice without further detail. read more

This is a great Build-A-Bear location. The staff, especially an associate named Diane were extremely friendly and helpful. This bear was for a sick relative, so it meant a lot the effort the staff put into building a special bear. I sent my babysitter here with 3yo today. During your child's birthday month he or she can make a special bear for the price of their age. I was excited for my daughter to make a bear and only spend $3. The sitter walks in with my daughter and no one is particularly attentive. The sitter mentions they are there to make a birthday bear, and the staff member says "Just pick any animal you want." After picking out a bunny, stuffing it, and dressing it, they go to pay. Another staff member says, "The birthday discount is only for the special birthday bear." Well, now my child is attached to the bunny so it's not like they can just pivot at this point. They insist that the sitter has to pay the full price even though it was an employee who said "Pick any animal." Enjoy my $40, BAB. It's the last I'll spend there. read more

I like Build-a-Bear. FYI, you go in and pick a bear, then stuff it and they say stuff like, "Give it a heart so it knows how to love" and stuff like that. then you"give it a bath": you push a pump and air comes out while you brush it off. Next, you pick out clothes. They have some pretty bad clothing compared to when I was a kid. They have High School Musical and Hannah Montana junk for them to wear. When I was little it was simple: Pretty, cute things with flowers or polak-dots and stuff. Anyways, then you name it and fill out its birth certificate. It prints out and the cashier gives it to you when you check out. Now, I guess they think they're losing movey to Webkinz, so you can bring your build-A-Bear to life online. I think it kinda ruins the fun, but you'll be the judge of that. read more

I understand the Covid safety issues and am more than happy to follow them. But today at the West County Mall BaB was horrible. My husband and I brought our 4 and 7 year old granddaughters to get a stuffed animal. We weren't even in the store yet and they started barking out orders. Yes barking out orders about no touching anything. No picking up anything. Only use your eyes. Stay a safe distance. Then when the girls found their items it was more barking orders of where to place items. Where to stand. What not to do. The BaB experience of kissing the heart (the heart would be going into our bear and the girl could wear gloves or use hand sanitizer or have kids put in) and telling how soft or firm you want them and watching them get filled has always been a major part of the fun. Today we had to place our items 10 ft from the stuffing machine then walk 6 ft in a different direction to wait for someone to pick it up and fill it. After they were done they were placed back on pedestal/table and we couldn't pick up until the person walked away. Who by the way walked right passed us within a foot or two. The "bathtub" where kids groom their bears is closed due to covid. Only one computer is in use due to covid. Then checkout was the same barking orders and ridiculous rules. The girl moved away from us and said "place all your items there and back up to over there". She then rings everything up and my 4 year old granddaughter walked up to get hers and the girl barked another order, "stay there and wait for them when I say". My GD then walked back to us and the girl immediately walked away and said, "now you can get". Now we all had mask on and they had mask on so...... Again, I appreciate safety measures but this is a child's fun place. I have been to restaurants where I put the food in my mouth and many other stores that are not this bossy, rude or have such restrictive rules. Went to a few clothing stores and the staff was more then happy to help us within a safe distance and there was no barking to move. read more
