The atmosphere is really relaxing, they have lots of paintings on the wall that I loved and that you can even purchase for yourself. Been here three times now and have been disappointed by the food and service each time. Today I had the breakfast sandwich with eggs, cheese and bacon on a bagel. The bagel was plain and dry, there was no seasoning in the eggs. The server made a big deal about it being on a plain bagel, but there didn't seem to be any other choices. My husband got a breakfast burrito that was similarly dry, with no salsa or anything over the top or inside. For this we waited at least 20 minutes after ordering. They were slammed and really slow, but they've been that way each time we have been there. read more

I was looking for a place that was on the Chapel Hill side of Durham and came across the coupon for Bull Street Market, so glad I looked on Yelp! I took a friend here for drinks & a bite for dinner. I had the "kitchen sink" salad and a bean soup. The names of these dishes make them sound so simple and they are, but SO delicious: hazelnuts in the salad? brilliant! And soup that starts with a delicious broth, key to all the best soups in my view. The atmosphere was so welcoming and relaxing that we didn't even realize we had stayed an hour past closing time... oh dear. (Even after that, the man who served us ran after me to return my sweater that I left behind.) I will definitely be back. read more

Bull Street Gourmet has grown a special place in my heart. It's now my go-to café/lunch spot in Southwest Durham, where I can count on a delicious and/or nutritious breakfast or lunch. The staff know me by name, and often recommend a new treat they'll know I'll like. If you're a foodie, you'll want to check out the chocolate/candy, wine, and refrigerated foods section, which offers a collection of locally produced goat cheese spreads. Best iced coffee! Their ice cubes are made of coffee so you don't get that watered down sadness as they melt. My friend and I ate lunch at Bull and Bean today. The woman at the counter got both of our orders wrong. I mean, I had a discussion with her about the crabcake sliders (an option on the menu for the crabcake salad) and then ordered the crabcake sliders. What I got was two chicken sliders. I guess they were today's special. But I never even mentioned them.... The chicken sliders weren't bad. But definitely not crabcake...... The food is usually good at the Bull and Bean. But the people taking the orders often get them wrong. That needs to change. read more

First time visitor, and yikes! A big roach crawled across the cashier's counter as I was paying for my lunch order to go, the burger with the pasta salad side. I pointed the roach and warned the cashier as it scurried out of sight towards her side of the counter. The very nice and polite cashier quickly notified the manager. The she informed me that the restaurant does not have roaches and that an exterminator recently visited and gave a clean bill for roaches; however, she stated that the exterminator told her that since the weather is getting cooler, roaches will come in seeking warmth (paraphrasing). Since I ordered and paid with my credit card just before the cashier informed the manager, I decided to wait for my order. I moved out of the way of the cashier's area and was patiently waiting, and then I noticed something peculiar. There is a window at the food-prep area, and as was watching the happy cooks, I noticed they were eating...in the food prep area! The one female cook was chawing on a cheese burger while she moved closer to the serving window. I thought to myself, "wha..." and the another cook in a chef's smock passed by the serving window stuffing, what looked like a burrito or perhaps a wrap into his mouth as if hurried :O I pointed to the window, the manager came over, and I said, they're eating in the food prep area! The manager headed toward the food prep area. She later returned and said the matter was rectified. I quickly decided that I had to ask for a refund and find lunch elsewhere. Lesson learned: when venturing to a new or unfamiliar restaurant, take the time to look around and observe wtf is going on before deciding to order. read more

I really really wanted to like this place but now after several visits I'm afraid I won't be trying it again. The food is mediocre for how expensive it is. I previously thought Panera's prices were high for subpar food but Bull Street takes the cake! If the sandwiches cost 1/3 of the price then perhaps they'd be worth it. Also, the prices posted on the boards don't match their menu, and the reasoning when I inquired about the discrepancy made no sense. read more

The food at Bull Street is delicious and the prices are moderate. My husband and I have stopped for brunch a couple of times and ordered different things each time, my favorite being "Meg's Manhattan" (think croissant with eggs, tomatoes, avocado, capers, and salmon/bacon/sausage). While the food has always been tasty and fresh, the prices seem a bit steep for more gourmet breakfast/brunch items, as they come a la carte. So if you order eggs Benedict for $12, you will get a plate with just eggs Benedict - no potatoes, fruit, grits, etc. Sides are available for an additional cost. However, if you're looking for a quick breakfast sandwich or avocado toast, the prices are reasonable. I definitely recommend giving Bull City a try as there are lots of options available - I have only tried a few, but all have been fresh and tasty! read more

The food here is great! I've always had a good meal and I've eaten here a lot. It's fresh, healthy and tasty. Why three stars? The value. It's incredibly expensive for what it is. An egg and cheese on an English muffin for $5.50? One egg and a tiny store bought English muffin. It tasted great and the egg was cooked perfectly. They charge $2 to add cheese to a sandwich. So as much as I love the food i always walk away frustrated by the cost. read more

If you like Parker & Otis, you'll love Bull Street. It's like a mini P&O in a cute little shopping center. Nestled in Hope Valley Square with many other great restaurants to choose from (Only Burger, Pop's Backdoor, Rick's), Bull Street offers a great little market with wine, beer, a small selection of groceries (milk, eggs, cheese, meat), and candies. Think a mini version of P&O's market section. Take a look around, but don't let that take away from the real focus of Bull Street, the sandwiches. The turkey and brie for $7.99 layers on smoked turkey, brie, cucumber, lettuce, tomato and cranberry mayo on an amazingly fluffy and fresh ciabatta bread. Typically I find ciabatta tough and overly crunchy, but Bull Street does it right. Their ciabatta packs some buttery but not overpowering flavor that compliments any sandwich. Whether it's the Turkey and Brie or The Sicilian with rosemary ham, prosciutto, sopressata, provolone, caponata and basil mayo, on tomato parmesan focaccia, all of Bull Street's sandwiches are top notch. Note that the price just represents the sandwich (no side), so be sure to grab a bag of kettle chips or a bottled soda. We tried their Dublin Dr. Pepper. Although I didn't try any, the bakery section looks terrific and they also offer a number of salads and breakfast dishes. They have some very cozy booths and outdoor seating. This is a welcome addition to an already great little foodie haven by the Post Office on Shannon Rd. You can run in and sit down, or run in and take out. I generally get their 1/2 soup + 1/2 sandwich or salad lunch deal. Everything is freshly prepared from mostly locally sourced ingredients. Everyone I bring there vows to come back. I like the folks who work there; they remember that I'm addicted to the "Mash" sodas. ;) (Try one - You'll see for yourself.) The homemade coconut cake is a must-try. I place this in the Foster's/Guglhupf category, which is high praise. The parking is a lot less nutty than those places so for lunch it's easier to get in/get back to the office. Oh, I should not omit the opportunity to sing high praises to their soups. Two choices daily, with one usually being a vegan option. I've tried many: Carrot Ginger, Lentil, Italian Wedding, Beef Stew, Chicken with Rice... So fresh, so flavorful, so appropriately spiced and never too salty. Even the Seinfeld Soup Nazi might appreciate these soups. Try some soup of the day with the Kitchen Sink salad, which is constantly changing as well. Or the Drunken Salad. MMMM. read more

There's no B.S. about Bull Street Market. I ordered the sesame quinoa edamame bowl and a strawberry banana smoothie while here for brunch with some friends. The quinoa bowl was filled to the brim with fruit and kale, and the teriyaki drizzle that accompanied it served as the perfect topping to add pizazz. The smoothie, which I'm enjoying now as we depart the market, isn't too sweet and for only $4.50 for a small, is at a great price given the amount of seemingly fresh ingredients blended in. read more

Went on a Sunday after church. It was pretty slow and the cashier was super nice. I had the french toast and my daughter had pancakes. She wasn't too fond of them. I found this place thanks to local Yelpers. Following that country store casual vibe pioneered by Parker & Otis and Fosters Market, this little place has a wonderful ambiance. You walk in and pick up a menu while waiting in line for the register. You order and pay the cashier, and she hands you a table number which you take to your table. On the way to said table, you pick up your own flatware, napkins, and condiments. Speaking of tables, every table is different in a shabby chic kind of way. The wait for your food is totally reasonable. My mom and I both had make-your-own omelette; dad had Oatmeal and an egg sandwich. The rye bread from Guglhupf is SO good. And the Counter Culture Coffee is good, though I felt my batch was just a tad over-roasted. All of our food tasted super fresh and delicious, which makes sense given that this place is very farm-to-table in its approach to sourcing it's ingredients. There's a list of 20 different local food providers on above the coffee bar that tells you where all of the main ingredients come from. That makes me happy; I like supporting the local little guys more than any big chain. So should you! I'll definitely be coming back here again. Bull Street offers an excellent brunch with the added bonuses of available parking and little wait. The benedict is very good, but the loaded hash browns with pulled pork are simply incredible, particularly when topped with a helping of Num Num sauce. The pork is flavorful and smoky and the flavors, including the poached eggs, are greater than the sum of their parts. I don't hesitate to name it as perhaps the best brunch dish I've had in the Triangle. read more
