10/10 -- highly recommend this place! From the moment we walked in, we loved the atmosphere. The vibe was fun and welcoming, the food was outstanding, and our server went above and beyond to answer all of our questions and make recommendations. Our group tried the duck, steak, lengua, and carne asada tacos, and every single one was delicious. The duck taco was the standout for me--the crispy fried duck skin added the perfect texture and flavor. We also shared the Para la Mesa with sweet corn on the side, empanadas, and churros for dessert. The empanadas were incredible, especially with that amazing sauce that had just the right kick of spice. The wagyu steak from the Para la Mesa was another favorite, cooked perfectly and packed with flavor. And I can't forget to mention the warm, fresh tortillas--they were absolutely delicious and elevated every bite. Sometimes it's the little details that make a meal memorable, and these tortillas definitely did. If I had to pick my top three items, they would be the duck taco, the wagyu steak, and the empanadas. A special shoutout to our server (I wish I remembered his name!). He introduced us to mezcal tequila, which none of us had tried before, and it ended up being such a fun experience that made our evening even more memorable. Puerto is probably one of my favorite restaurants in Charlotte! I don't know why I always forget to add a review. Anyway, this time I split the Mesita platter with my friend. The steak was perfectly cooked, the papa's were delicious. We got the plantains as an appetizer and those were great as well. Went here for my bestie birthday brunch and 10/10!! It was so good that we were sitting there eating planning our next visit!!! I love how inclusive our waiter was nice friendly, asked about allergies and restrictions. she also advised us when we order something that conflicted with those restrictions! She was so knowledgeable about the menu. Guacamole and chip were so good guacamole was fresh and flavorful! I love that I was still kinda chunky and all the flavors really came together! Chips were also seasoned! Papas braves were potatoes in a red sauce with pickle red onions. I really don't think I would like it but it was very good! The tacos were amazing! I don't do dairy so I didn't get cheese on my tacos but they were still so good!!! Chicken was flavorful and moist! Shrimp was the perfect size and season to perfection! Steak was probably my favorite the butter they cook the steak in was so good! They weren't stingy with the meat at all! They also let me add pickle onions on all my tacos! I literally could only each half of each taco and half the potatoes! The Sunday we went they were also having a convo de mayo patio party so they had a local artist inside doing sketches! She was so night and sweet and her entire set up was so cute! We recently went here for brunch on a Sunday. I've been for happy hours before and always enjoyed the drinks and appetizers. The brunch menu was a little different but we all split the queso to start. Super delicious! The tacos we got though were pretty bland. Our server would check on us periodically but for the most part he wasn't very attentive to our group. It also wasn't crowded at all when we went. It took a while to get our check but he did surprise our group with churros for my boyfriend's bday which was a pleasant surprise! Overall it was just an ok experience. Great food and ambiance. I was in Charlotte for work and stopped for dinner with a friend. Parking can be a hassle in this location as they're several businesses and restaurants in the immediate area. We thankfully came right on time and was able to get a close park. The entrance is at the back so keep that in mind. The ambiance was dim lit with current music and was bustling with the sounds and laughs of people. The seating is a bit close, almost communal with one continual bench on one side and chairs on the other. It makes it convenient for large groups but not so convenient if you're looking for an intimate setting. I will also say seating in the main area is limited-there appears to be outdoor seating and an additional dining room but they weren't in use. We were immediately sat and provided menus to look over. Our server was very attentive and knowledgeable. I felt the pricing was a bit high but the food was good. The queso was real cheese and presented nicely. The guac was great as well. I felt things could have used a bit more salt and a little bit more spice. I used their hot sauce and some flaky sea salt which really pulled things together. I came here on a Tuesday for dinner, and although they were out of the chicken tinga tacos, which I was a little disappointed about (especially after I had called the restaurant beforehand), the customer service more than made up for it. Katie and Hunter were both incredibly helpful, apologetic, and genuinely made an effort to make things right. Their positive attitudes and excellent customer service turned what could have been a frustrating experience into a great one. I've tried to get a reservation here for months, but unable! I was finally able to tag us down for this past Saturday night. Given such difficulty getting a reservation, I expected things to be amazing here. Well, here's my honest take! We arrived for an early reservation at 5:30 pm. The place was quite small, and all the tables were squeezed in together. Unless you're in a party of 3, you'll be sitting in these super-tight, half-booths or bar areas. We were seated right by the kitchen and their open hallway...with no privacy. If I knew this earlier, I would have requested to be seated outside on their patio. So definitely NOT a comfy seating environment! The menu was interesting...definitely not your typical Mexican restaurant. Price points were definitely the highest I've seen for a Mexican restaurant in Charlotte. However, the options were very limited, and frankly, I didn't find too many items tantalizing. Prior to coming here, I saw pictures of their appetizer, Queso Fundido w/ Chorizo, so I made a point to order that right away (as soon as we got seated...hoping to get that early!). I definitely stressed WITH CHORIZO with our waitress. Well! This app was nowhere in sight...even after 20 minutes. I tagged down the waitress...and I don't even think she bothered to check with the cooks! She basically went missing for another 5-10 minutes!! I then had to tag down a Manager (I think?). I don't think she even bothered to check...because I had to personally tag down our waitress again the second time...after 30 minutes! Shortly after, our Queso Fundido arrived...but WITHOUT the CHORIZO! I had to tag our waitress the third time to get the Chorizo! After all the delay and the botched order, she didn't even frickin' apologize! Just WOW. In fact, she just made this rather haughty remark about "getting it for us"...as if she's doing us a favor! What a crock!!! After a full 30-35 minutes, we finally got this fancy CHEESE appetizer (which in NO WAY should take that long!). It was good, but NOT worth that much of a wait. For our entrees, I just got their 2 Street Tacos Meal, and had to choose from just 1 of 3 unappealing sides (Papas Bravas...basically Mexican version of potatoes). No Rice. The 2 Tacos were good, but nothing extraordinary. What's more (or less??), the taco shells were really small...with somewhat of a hard crust. Very hard to eat! My husband's Chicken Al Pastor Ballotine dish was a bit better, but he was underwhelmed as well. BTW, their version of Nachos was this Huge, round tostada...not ideal for dipping or eating. We both felt we preferred the standard Nachos w/ Dip. We left scratching our heads. So much difficulty getting a reservation for this haughty, little place...and this was what we got?!? O-Kay foods at outlandish pricing, super-slow rate of food delivery, and this terrible, snooty service. Also, I did NOT like their tight, close-quarter seatings. Overall, this dining experience was just flat-out bad. Definitely not worth it...in my book. BTW, though ZERO apologies were given (Nope...the waitress felt she did us a favor!), they did manage to deduct the botched order of Queso Fundido with Chorizo off our bill. Good thing....it's THE only reason I'm dropping 2 stars instead of 1. We were actually a bit surprised by this because the Manager never bothered to follow up with us. She basically stood right next to us the whole time, so probably heard and saw us tagging down the waitress several times...and also know that we ended up with a botched order of Queso Fundido. Yet, didn't bother to follow up. Guess she felt she did her part getting it off the bill. Somehow, I don't feel too grateful??? This place reeked of pseudo upscaled Mexican, and their snooty attitude managed to totally turn us off. The ambiance, the foods, the presentation, and the service just did not live up to the hype! Delicious. Puerta is an upscale but casual dining with an elevated/fancy take on Mexican food. The staff is very friendly and welcoming and it's a cute spot for a date or just a fun night out. The place is a decent size but I wouldn't say good for large groups unless you make a reservation. I came for lunch and for a Mexican Caesar salad. It was very tasty. I asked for pepper and salt and that really elevated the salad. Highly recommend adding some to bring out the flavor. I added chicken and it was very tender. I recently stopped by Puerta around lunchtime on a Saturday, thinking I'd grab something from their regular menu. Once I was seated, I discovered they were only offering the brunch menu at that time--maybe that's on me for not checking ahead, but I do wish the host had mentioned it at the door before seating us. A quick heads-up would've been nice! That said, I wasn't disappointed at all. The food was really solid. The enchiladas were the absolute highlight--perfectly flavorful, well-seasoned, and just delicious. The rice and beans on the side were good too, with that classic comforting taste that hits the spot. Our server was excellent--very knowledgeable and friendly. If you're in the mood for some good conversation and insightful facts about the local area, they'd be happy to chat and share. All in all, it was a positive experience, and I can't really complain. Parking can be not as easy so give yourself time to find parking in and around the area. Super tasty food in a cool Mexican inspired restaurant. It felt very Tulum. We came here for brunch and enjoyed our food. The dirty horchata was interesting. Queso fundido was very tasty and the tostadas that came with it where fresh! The hamachi crudo was refreshing and light with bits of guacamole. The papas con chorizo was delicious and spicy but not too spicy. It featured two eggs, chorizo, pico de gallo, crema and a few other ingredients I don't remember, all on a base of crispy potato's. I celebrated my birthday at Puerta in Dec 2025! I really enjoyed it. But I want to start off by telling you yes it's a great place for a date or dinner out w friends on the weekend and not a place to come celebrate a special occasion and I will tell you why. First off the food was spectacular very flavorful of authentic Mexican food and their taco board with beef and the bone in pork were so good! The fixings we chose were rice and beans as well as the corn and all were delicious. Additionally we ordered the chicharon appetizer and empanadas and were all great. This restaurant is a classier version of the Mexican street food I would say and the prices are way higher, but the food quality, presentation and overall service compensate the price. I was hoping the back of the restaurant where there is a bar with a speakeasy vibe would have a DJ and it was one of the reasons I chose this restaurant but sadly they do not have it during the week - so big heads up FYI for you ;) ... no DJ during the week and they are not staffed enough to keep the back bar open unless it's the weekend. Then, I was not allowed to sit any minute prior to my reservation of 8 people, nor be in a smaller table while we wait for ours to be ready and wait for the other guests. Which we would be consuming, appetizers, drinks etc. but that was not an option. When time came 9:15pm as reserved, they were not ready. They had to ask the parties that were occupying our tables to move to different tables in the back so they could do ours.... So, even though they found a way to get us seated soon I don't believe it's a good experience especially someone going there for a celebration. Since we couldn't sit at the bar to wait we had to go across the street to another restaurant... (a favorite of mine Catalina) which it turned out it worked in our favor thank goodness but it's something I would keep in mind if you are planning a dinner out on a Thursday at Puerta. This portion is in case you are looking for your place to go celebrate. First, $20 per cake/ desert flat fee. Compared to competitors it's great, better than $ per slice per person. Second, and most importantly, they will not come and sing happy birthday, they will not bring or offer a complimentary desert, they will not bring a card signed by the staff or gift card... nothing, zilch, nada. I don't think it's a must per se, but it's interesting and as a former restaurant sir and now marketing director I have lots to say about it and if I may my advise to Puerta is pick something to make your special guest feel special on their day, it will go a long way and elevate the whole experience more than you know. I would have given a 5 star if it wasn't for the many inconveniences that night, which I know things happen but you know what they say....? The first impression always lasts. read more

As much as I want to give this place a higher score, there are just a couple things I think would make this a better experience. Overall my friend and I had a great experience here. The server was on point, the sandia margarita was strong and delicious. And the food was well seasoned, well cooked, and generous portions (except the guacamole side). The ambience is chill, the bar area reminded me of a speakeasy. My friend and I ordered the tacos for the table with the pork shank and wagyu steak. Both meats were very good with the pork shank being incredible. The seasons were well balanced, the meat had a delicious smoky flavor, kinda chipotle flavor and it was very tender. The steak was tender and well seasoned too. The corn was good, the guac was good, and the pork belly small plate had a nice flavor but the skin could have been a little more crispy. Now the reason I can't give it 5 stars is because I think the guac should have not been a side choice for the table tacos but it should have been included as a condiment like the salsa. The chicharron tasted great but it was missing that signature crunch and the steak was cooked perfectly but it was served kinda cold. Overall I'd definitely go back and order the table tacos and even though the guac was good. I'd get another side to get more bang for my $150. read more

Yes yes yes! Of all the restaurants I've been to in Charlotte, this one takes the cake. The vibe is amazing -- it gives "hole in the wall" x "sex in the city." They seated my family and I rather quickly, the waitress was kind and giving (she gave us extra tea packets and guac without charge), and the food was GOOD. Loved the guac and salsa. It's hard to find good food for everyone in my family. We have gluten free, pescatarians, vegans and vegetarians, and this spot had something for all of us. New CLT fave unlocked! What a cute restaurant. I came in without a reservation and was seated at the bar (thank God that worked out, make a reservation people). The bartenders Chase and Tyler were both welcoming and attentive. We learned that Puerta is a tequila bar with an expansive selection and variety of different tequila bottles. The menu is primarily Mexican inspired but I wouldn't call this traditional- it's Modern Mexican with their own spin and a bit more upscale. The portions were on the smaller side in my opinion so I'd recommend trying a few diff items and taking advantage of the appetizers. The queso was a 10/10. I tried it with the mushroom birria and that truly knocked it out the park. Whenever our chips finished - the bartenders gave us more. Great starter. The tuna tostaditas were DELICIOUS and perfectly constructed. They were pretty spicy but If you're scared of the spice you can just remove the pepper off the top. This appetizer is pretty small, it'll be gone in 3 bites. The seared scallops entree was tasty and well made. It came with rice cooked in squid ink and with a spicy peanut sauce situation on the side. It's a bit hard to describe but it was tasty and unique. I don't know that I've had similar rice or sauce anywhere in Charlotte. Now - the tequila! I asked the bartender to surprise me with a tequila blanco cocktail and he truly delivered. We also tried the reposado flight and I love that he took the time to explain some of the background of the different bottles and also that it came with a small chaser. The flight was essentially 3 small shots - be mindful of this based on your alcohol intake capacity. Overall, I really enjoyed my experience, the environment and the food and drinks. The food was a bit on the slower side to come out but thankfully the appetizers kept us afloat. If you're looking for a place with amazing mixology, quality tequila and tasty bites - this is a good option to consider. I'll be back very soon! read more

When things go wrong, they really go wrong. I don't know if there been a big turnover in staff, but we definitely did not have the same experience as before. We had a table of four and started with the crispy pork belly, and scallop ceviche. The pork belly was barely warm and was definitely not crispy. It very much seemed pre-prepared and the glaze had softened the texture. The scallop ceviche was lagging for an extended period of time so we ordered the salsa trio with chips. We had to ask for salt because there was absolutely none in the roasted red salsa, and It had a very canned tomato flavor. When the scallop ceviche finally came to the table, our waiter told us it was the first and last. Since it was so late in getting to us, the manager comped it. There was a squid ink tuile on top. It was salty. We each took a little of the ceviche and tasted it. It was so incredibly salty and was possibly an attempt to cover the fact that the scallops were NOT fresh!!! It was obvious and we did not eat the dish. Small wonder that it was the only one that came out of the kitchen and they shouldn't have sent that one. I would much rather they be honest that the scallops were bad and ask if we would rather have had the hamachi crudo, or something else. The entrees were not great either. Two of us at the table ordered the octopus in a squid ink glaze. We each had one very small section of a tentacle. It was on a dinner plate but looked like an appetizer. Very minimal plate of food. The glaze was gummy and the octopus was on the slightly chewy side. The hominy puree, and let's be real, hominy is not expensive, was barely present on the plate. Three tiny dots that weren't even the size of a dime. The other entrees were flank steak and chicken. The steak was very unevenly cooked and lacked seasoning. The chicken was a large piece of dry, overcooked chicken breast just sitting on top of the rest of the dish's components. Last, but not least, this restaurant's whole thing was their tequila and mezcal selection. It's no longer much of a list. Our experience was nothing remotely close to the previous dining experiences that we've had at Puerta. I sincerely doubt that we'll be back and I will no longer recommend this restaurant. read more

The service was top notch. We sat at the bar had some drinks. The woman at the bar was absolutely wonderful. She made some great drinks. And even though she was breaking down and prepping for dinner shift she still was so engaging with us. They have sister restaurants in the same area, she went as far to offer us ordering some apps from their sister spot and she would go get it for us to hold us over till 5(we got there close to 3) Now that is service for you. We didn't make her do that, but we also didn't make it to dinner either, but after that great experience I'd definitely be back for food!! read more

Went again since we had such a great experience the first time! I still love that the chips are a whole tortilla and the queso is amazing. The salsas are really good too (you have to order chips and dips, it doesn't come with anything). I got the frose Paloma to drink and the taco salad for dinner and both were delicious!! It was interesting because we were told it would be a 2 hour wait when arriving for 2 at 6:00, then next thing we knew they were seating us. Went to Puerta for a girls' night and had such a fun time! We ordered the tacos, plantains, and the tuna tartare -- which ended up being my favorite dish of the night. The tuna was super fresh and served over guac (honestly, I'd go back just for that). Our waitress was great and had us try a Chenin Blanc that paired really well with everything -- surprisingly good! I was in town traveling for work and went to eat dinner here alone on a Tuesday evening. My food was exceptional and the service was great. The dining area isn't very large, so you're sitting fairly close to other people, and they were playing something like Latin house music over the speakers -- it was a great dining experience. I am thankful this is not another tapas restaurant - I am about burned out on every new concept serving tapas instead of entree meals. I got one of the seafood entrees, Hamachi Collar, because it was unique. But what looked really exceptional was on the "Featured" part of the menu. Each entree on that part is sized to serve 2 or more people. There were two women eating beside me seated at the bar eating dinner, and they ordered the Mesita or the Costilla Dino. It came out on a wood platter and the meat was wrapped in a banana leaf. When it was unwrapped, the meat was charred black on the outside but then fell apart when touched with a fork. It looked and smelled awesome. I asked the women beside me how their dinner was and one of them said she is from Mexico City but lives in Charlotte now and has been here a few times because the food is absolutely authentic Mexican and is exactly what she might get back home - only the tortillas weren't as good as the ones her grandmother makes! That's as strong of an endorsement as one could ask for and cemented in my mind that Puerta is worth coming back to - I just need to bring one or two people with me so we can try something off the Featured Menu! read more

Parking is hard! But once you get in, it's such a charming spot and beautifully decorated with so much natural light. I would rate ambience 11/10. Serg (at least that was the name on my receipt bc i forgot his name!) was our server and really took care of us that night. He offered some suggestions and checked in with us throughout the night. The food came out so quick and were so artfully presented. The al pastor grouper was so light and refreshing and such a balanced meal with fun textures and flavors - like I never thought warmed cucumber crema would ever be good but here we are writing a 5 star review. "Elevated" Mexican cuisine So the question is, who's doing the heavy lifting? There is no question Puerta was one of Charlotte's most hyped restaurants. After a few missteps (we'll get to that), and the general flux of time with so many new places opening up. There is always going to be a gradual fall off of popularity, unless you are producing something you simply can't get anywhere else. I stopped by on Wednesday night at around 6:30pm. I've read how hard it can be to get a table sometimes here, so I wanted to try and beat the dinner crowd. When I arrived I was immediately seated in the rather large dining room, and was really impressed with the outdoor patio. This location takes advantage of 7th street, and the fairly walkable neighborhood. It's a great view from the patio, and the restaurant fits in well within a very chaotic parking situation. I suggest saving yourself the headache, and just parking at the deck next door. There you can get your ticket validated at one of the shops connected to the deck. The server was very pleasant and informative, it was the first time the use of "elevated Mexican cuisine" was used that night. The term when used correctly will leave you in for a culinary treat. When used as a crutch, you're probably getting underwhelming, and overpriced tapas. But overall I think the customer service was good. While a bit slow, when the service was present it felt elaborate, and tailored to my dining experience that evening. I did appreciate that. The food itself was a mixed bag, I'll start with what they do well. The presentation is great, the platting is cohesive and makes sense with the glasses and cutlery. The actually food platting makes you want to immediately devour your food when it arrives. The chefs are putting lovely charring on the cheeses, and the dollops of avocado center placed around the large chips is a nice touch. Overall great presentation. The actual taste is decent. I had the guacamole appetizer, the actual guac didn't really have a refreshing taste. It was fairly one note, maybe even a bit salty which I think is a first. The oversized chips weren't fresh unfortunately. I learned this when I requested new ones, because the old ones were flat out stale. The new ones came out warm, that made the dish much better. For my main I got the carne asada enchiladas, they came out pipping hot. The server informed me the plates were hot to the touch. Again the charring was excellent, the enchilada was soft and melted in my mouth. The steak bits on top had a good sear, tender, and seasoned well. The dish came in a fairly small bowl, all compact and placed together. For me it was a decent portion, and I finished the entire plate. Overall Puerta is good, they provide decent food and a nice vibe. But there isn't a stand out (I tried the tables tacos, chicken mole, scallops, and churros) nothing that makes me say I need to come here twice a week or much less once a month. I'd personally hand over a blank check to a dining experience that delivers something unique, exceptional, and delicious. So price has to meet quality and experience. Puerta is and has tested its consumer base with charging 30.00 for small portions of enchiladas. A few months ago, I got a lot of feedback about the only way to order tacos at a Mexican restaurant was to spend $150.00. That was clearly rectified by the time I went, because the 5.00 -7.00 ala carte tacos they were providing before (that were a hit with it's base), are now $23.00 (with rice beans/plantains). It has a cozy but modern atmosphere and offers about 400 different tequilas. I know insane! We had queso, enchiladas, mushroom arepas and street tacos. Struggle with this review, the restaurant is very nice, great features and well decorated. The 2 apps were very good albeit small in size based on price. The price is what knocked it to a 3 $155 for 4 drinks and 2 apps. Our server was very attentive and friendly. First time here and of course parking is really hard. They share parking with other businesses so it can get really crowded, especially on a Monday. The place is pretty small, they have a front area and back area with a bar and tables. The staff are really nice and accommodating. My friend didn't like the drink that she ordered and they were nice and made her a replacement drink so that was nice. The food was good and delicious. Everything that was got was good. I would say the seafood dish was too soupy like. But the dessert was delicious too. Everything here was good. Love the bathrooms, equite with the things you need as a girl. Would def come back. Puerta had such a cozy atmosphere and moody ambiance. It's a little small but that's how a lot of Charlotte restaurants are. Everyone that interacted with that worked there was kind and attentive.
