I recently visited with a group of six, and we had a really enjoyable experience overall. The food and cocktails were good across the board --I especially loved the passion fruit pisco sour cocktail, which was refreshing and well-balanced. One thing that pleasantly surprised us was how reasonable the prices were, even for dishes like steak. It made it easy for everyone in our group to try a variety of items without feeling like we were overspending. The restaurant itself has a charming Peruvian-inspired decor that adds to the atmosphere and gives it a unique, welcoming vibe. Although we were the only customers during the two and a half hours we were there on a Thursday night, it didn't negatively impact our experience at all. If anything, it made for a relaxed and unhurried evening. That said, it does make me wonder if the shopping plaza location might be limiting their visibility, because the restaurant definitely deserves more attention. The service was great--our waitress was very kind and attentive throughout the evening. As a nice touch, one of our friends received a complimentary birthday dessert complete with a candle, which made the night feel extra special. I was so glad to find this place! From the moment we walked in, the vibe of the space was really nice. There's not many bars in Charlotte that have pisco, and they not only made pisco sours, but also had several really high quality, thoughtful pisco cocktails. Cute place great staff, but over priced. The kitchen messed up my order and the mgr was professional enough to discount my check. Drinks were good food was just ok. I got the seafood ceviche and it was missing the blue crab and prawns. They changed the price it used to be $25 but then it went up to 30 or 35. I believe they should've left it the same as a matter of fact they knew you changed in general because what I've seen on Instagram and a video was not on the menu. Tucked away in a strip mall, this small place packs a lot of punch. First- the aesthetic is lovely. The decor pays homage, I believe, to the Peruvian roots but combines it with a modern aesthetic. Comfortable chairs as well! Second- the staff was super friendly. So helpful in helping us choose our meal. Third- and probably most important- the food was delicious. This place is overpriced and they do not have the kitchen staff provide quality service. We went last night and there were very few people in the restaurant yet the server said the kitchen was backed up. Drinks were okay but the food was not good. My son ordered the Braza Chicken and it was thin, overcooked chicken breast with little flavor (we ordered the thighs but obviously they messed it up) and the fries were just three unsalted boiled potatoes and a few pieces of boiled hominy. It was truly terrible if I have to be completely honest. The short ribs with Peruvian mash came with too little meat and it was tough and chewy. The Nikkey salmon needed more salt, and the kids chicken nuggets were mostly fried batter with very little chicken. Both my kids disliked their orders and after trying their food I can see why. This is one of the best meals I have had in Charlotte! If you are looking for a flavorful and freshly prepared meal with high quality ingredients and an extensive menu then you have got to try Lola's right now, don't wait! This is a hidden gem not just for the excellent food but also for the ambiance and service. I had one of the many choices of ceviche dishes. It was bursting with fresh herb and tangy citrus flavors and the fish was very tender. The portion size is spot on and very satisfying. The baked beef empanada that I had was truly outstanding! It is a nice mix of savory flavors with a touch of sweetness from the raisins that makes for an amazing combination. The cocktails were a perfect complement to the meal and the dessert was a perfect ending. The pisco sours were well prepared with an extra foamy top and just the right touch of bitters. The homemade dessert trio is the way to go so you can get to try the creamy lucuma ice cream, the alfajores filled with a lucuma cream, and the chocolate lucuma cake made from their grandmother's recipe. Lucuma, a fruit I had never heard of before, is the star of the dessert show and for good reason with its creamy, nutty, caramel like flavor enhancing the taste of each item in the trio. The overall experience was great and the prices were more than reasonable especially considering that everything is prepared fresh and in house including the desserts! I would suggest you ignore any reviews mentioning concerns about time waiting for your food and language barriers. The food is prepared from fresh ingredients which is rare these days and is only found at family owned places such as Lola's. Because of this, it does take a few minutes longer for them to prepare it and is worth it. We had tickets to a show uptown after the meal and everything came out as we expected and we made it to the show in plenty of time. The family that owns Lola's is very nice and welcoming and their service is very attentive. Simply said, there is no language barrier at all. Fantastic freshly prepared dishes from family recipes, delicious cocktails all in a tastefully decorated environment with warm and welcoming staff. We were greeted by Juan upon arrival and he went over the entire menu with us. We enjoyed pisco sours - traditional and passion fruit - highly recommend. We shared a beef empanada - baked , not fried ( the correct preparation) and so tasty. Main dishes were one of the many ceviches and the adjide gallina. Be sure to save room for dessert and get the sampler of ice cream, alfajores, and chocolate cake with the flavor of lucuma , a Peruvian fruit that tastes similar to maple syrup / dulce de leche. Don't let the location in a small strip mall deter you - once inside you are transported by the ambiance and food. There's plenty of parking too! We will return! As for the review that mentions a language barrier - they must have been at a different establishment or they speak a different version of English because there is no problem communicating with the servers at Lola's. The language of delicious food and warm hospitality is universal. We went to Lola's on a Friday night around 8:15pm. They close at 9pm so we felt like we had plenty of time. We got there and noticed there were only 3 other tables of diners there, so we thought okay it's not a super busy place but that's fine- we really wanted to try it. There is definitely a significant language barrier if you don't speak Spanish. The owner/server (she was the only person there when we went beside the chef) speaks very limited English. Unfortunately we were the only diners who did not speak Spanish. Just be aware you might experience some miscommunication. Pros: -Beautiful interior - very nice server/owner - the food we actually received was honestly delicious. Cons: - VERY SLOW service. We sat for 30+ minutes before receiving drinks (one cocktail, 1 glass of wine). We ordered our drinks fairly quickly but did not receive them until after we had place our dinner order and asked for them again. - We did not receive 2 of the 4 dishes we ordered. We ordered a ceviche, an entree, and 2 empanadas. We had a whole conversation about the empanadas when we ordered them, and when the lady brought the other dishes she said the empanadas were coming right out. Never saw them. We weren't charged for them but that wasn't the point for me. By the time we got our food, we were the only people receiving food because everyone else was wrapping up. The empanadas were my main reason for going so I was pretty disappointed. In a nutshell: good food, poor service, language barrier. I would try it again and maybe take a Spanish-speaking friend with me. read more

Ok, first and foremost, this family is friendly and polite and I had no issue with their service. Unfortunately, everything was lacking so allow me to begin. We went on a weekend around noon and it started off bad. We asked for Chicha Morada and they didn't have any. STRIKE ONE! A Peruvian restaurant without Chicha Morada is like a BBQ place without sweet tea. After a few minutes of placing our order I waited a few minutes to see if they would bring out some cancha (a must at authentic Peruvian restaurants) I noticed none of the tables had any so I decided to ask our polite server and apparently they did have some, but I don't know why we had to ask for it. And when they brought them out they were burnt! STRIKE TWO! I ordered the Aji De Gallina which is typically the cheapest item on a Peruvian menu except here! It was incredibly overpriced at $17.00!! And the bland potato they used to put the chicken on is a bad idea. The Lomo Saltado was also very overpriced at $23.00 and extremely small in portion. The Lomo was not tender as it should be and it was not as saucy as it should be, the fries should be wet from all the juices of the meat. Instead everything was very dry and the meat was not soft and tender. The final and last STRIKE was regarding dessert. I asked for a Suspiro Limeño and they failed yet again and didn't have any! They claimed to be out of items, but you can tell they were lying. STRIKE 3 From experience I can tell you this place won't last long and it's a shame, because there is no good Peruvian. Overall they're very nice people, but they're lacking a lot in the food department. Also it wouldn't hurt if they turned the air conditioning on! read more

My husband and I were really excited to find a local Peruvian restaurant in Charlotte because we are originally from south Florida and the Peruvian cuisine is top notch down there, but Lola was quite disappointing. Upon first glance, the restaurant has wonderful curb appeal, with soft lighting and thoughtful decor. However, we first ordered a few appetizers and were told after about 15 minutes that they had run out of some items. The first appetizer we received were baked scallops which were overcooked and dry. I will say the presentation of the baked scallops was very nice, but the most important part, the food, was subpar at best. We then received our two different types of ceviche - Mahi and Shrimp. The fish in the Mahi ceviche was soft and tender, but the lime juice it sat in tasted like it was from lime juice out of a bottle instead of fresh squeezed - very bitter and rancid. The same went for the juice in the shrimp, but the shrimp were so hard and over cooked that a fork could hardly go through them. We then awaited our main courses in hopes they would redeem the appetizers. Our main courses took over 1 hour to come out to us. The waitress did apologize several times noting there was only one chef in the kitchen. After a long wait, my husband's main dish came out - only. A grilled salmon with vegetables and risotto. We decided to split his meal since mine was no where in sight. The salmon and vegetables had great flavor, but were very over cooked. The risotto it came with was atrocious. It was very hard and undercooked. We did advise the waitress and she stated that since it was risotto it was supposed to be hard, but we all know risotto is much softer than rice. She did offer to remake it, but given the time we had already spent waiting we told her not to worry about it. Another 20 minutes went by and the waitress came back to our table stating they were going to bring us a free appetizer for the long wait. They brought us some fried yuca cheese balls. The appetizer was not bad, but it was not something we would have ever ordered, as we typically do not order fried foods when we go out. After the long wait, my main dish came out, the dish had wonderful presentation. I ordered a grilled Mahi in a cream sauce with shrimp, calamari and scallops. My husband and I took a bite of the fish and immediately recognized that it has been deep fried and breaded rather than grilled as the menu stated - which was a huge disappointment. The shrimp and other seafood in the cream sauce were, once again, over cooked and hard just like the ceviche. The white rice the meal came was another set back - undercooked hard granules. After all this, the waitress decided to bring us some fried tempura with balsamic glaze to substitute the hard risotto from the salmon we had received. Overall, the food experience was awful. The only star I could give in this review is solely towards our waitress and the manager that was working because they tried to apologize for the kitchen's performance several times. If you're coming to Lola in hopes of great Peruvian food, this is not the place. You're much better off spending the extra money at Yunta. read more

I got the bistec a lo pobre with a fried egg, rice, fried plantains, fries and steak. So good! Loved the seasoning. We shared a dulce de Lola and it was SO GOOD! The waitstaff were very nice and helpful in explaining what some of the dishes were. The restaurant is small, only 11 tables, but it is nicely decorated. Every thing was fresh and tasty. I liked the empanadas, but personally, I would skip the powdered sugar (personal choice) so not condemning the flavor or texture of the empanada. The ceviche was fresh and full of flavor. My wife added the rocoto sauce which is definitely spicy!!! They had beers from South America and of course the famous pisco sour was delish!! The service was not as hot as there was only 1 waiter and what it looked like a relative of the owner assisting.
