This place is amazingly difficult to find. We probably walked by the place three times before trying a black door. Inside, the bar is absolutely quaint. All their alcohol in their cocktails are mixed in house. I personally found the drinks to be on the sweeter side, so if you prefer cocktails on the sweet end, this is the place for you. I saw a Groupon deal for tasting and a tour and jumped on it. The facility they showed us was a decent size. We tried a white whiskey, vodka, fruit punch, and another whiskey. A great selection of tastes to try through the tour. While the area for the tour is not huge, the tour does go on for about 30 minutes as they share their history and process for each bottle. read more

Such a fun distillery. I've gone on the tour twice now and it's fun! The company has such a good story. Their tap room is great and their cocktail selection is on point. They have a flight of old fashioned's which is my favorite. I absolutely love their whiskey, it's very smooth. Their bottles old fashioned is outstanding. They are a smaller distillery and do a fantastic job. If you love to support local businesses and are a whiskey, gin or rum fan, you must check them out. The cocktails here are incredible, as is the bartender. If you tell him what kind of liquor you like and what kind of cocktails you're usually into, he'll suggest the perfect drink. My mom and boyfriend are VERY picky drinkers, and he managed to suggest the perfect drink for both. Twice. As for the tour, 50 minutes of education muddled with comedy. Very fun, some samples of their liquor, and educational in an interesting and comedic way. I definitely appreciate the brand more after doing the tour than I did when I just saw it at the liquor store. The liquor - oh my - so good! I'm a huge gin fan, and this didn't disappoint! My mom is into vodka and she bought a bottle. My boyfriend loves whiskey and he bought both that and the old fashioned (they sell their old fashioned bottled and it's SO GOOD). I'm usually not hug into rum but their Hub Punch with a little club soda was deliciously fruity and I wanted a bottle but unfortunately they were out. So I'm going to steal my boyfriend's booze because t was so good! I went to the cocktail garden yesterday and had a really disappointing experience. We had a reservation for 6:15. When we arrived, we had to wait for 15 mins to be seated- that's fine. We were ready to order once we were seated, but the server quickly walked away. A new table was seated next us 15 mins later. We watched them quickly pick up the left over cups, but not wipe down the table. The new guest noticed this and requested they wipe down the table TWICE and still didn't get any attention. 40 minutes into our reservation and our server hasn't come by our table once. He finally starts severing the table that arrive after us. We heard the guest tell him to take our orders first since we've been here longer, the server responded "nahhh, it's all good." He finally came over to us afterwards, no explanation, and took our drink orders. 5 mins later the table next to us gets their drinks. We gave it another 5-10 mins after that, then finally left. Almost an hour there, and never had a drink. I'm a POC, so racism is always in the back of my mind. I'm not really sure how to explain the poor service we experienced. You almost feel as though you are entering a speakeasy when you arrive, not big signs, which makes it very cool :) The tasting room is small, but wasn't too crowded when I was there around 3pm on a Saturday. The décor is great (dark, fun designs, and lighting) and the staff is also very friendly and helpful when you ask for tips on what to order! Sipping Tips: - I would definitely try their flights. This gives you an advantage of trying a few of their liquors (and can always order a cocktail or two afterwards!) - Times immediately before or following a tour can make the tasting room a little busier - We started in the tasting room for a couple hours and finished our visit with a tour. The tour is great because you are able to sample a few liquors afterwards! We checked google maps and yelp to make sure they were open. Well guess what, they weren't. Private party. When I said that I checked, yelp and google maps said they were open and paid for an Uber to get there. I tried calling and it went straight to a message saying the box was full . the woman looked annoyed and said it was on google and instagram. The tour and tasting is $10 a person, but you can often get groupons for a discounted rate. If you are driving there, you will have to park in the street. The street parking is free so it is not a big deal. One thing to be aware of is that the building looks like a warehouse and is not marked that well. Honestly, the neighborhood will make you feel like you're in the wrong place. The GPS sends you to the right place, but the only sign is on the door. When you get in, the room is bright and nice... Stark contrast to the outside. We went on a weekend tour on a Sunday afternoon and there were 8 people total. The tour and tasting was pretty informal. Started with a couple videos about the distillery and its founders, then a tasting. We tried a vodka, white rum, did the tour, then tried the old fashioned, the godfather, whiskey, and dark rum. I really liked our tour guide, but he didn't work there full time. This is just a weekend gig for him. Because of that, he wasn't able to answer all of our questions or talk about the business as well. Maybe we should have gone on a weekday when it is more likely to see the founders. This review is for the spirits and the tasting room. The american whiskey from Bully Boy is the best whiskey for the price i have in my collection. I always keep it around and have also really enjoyed several of their gins (love them to make gimlets) and liked the wine aged whiskey as well. And the tasting room! best cocktails in greater Boston for sure. i live in Roxbury so having a spot closish is awesome. The flight of old fashioneds is a must. There are usually cocktails on tap and just excellent smart bar tenders all the time. And the tours are really great. When to you first walk in from the street you can get confused about what door to go in to get to the bar and the Distillery, but once inside you will fall in love with the place. The people at Bully Boy Distillery were so welcoming. They allow you to chill at the bar or at a table and just get comfortable. I suggest that you go take a tour and so the taste testing after the tour because youlearn a lot about how the Distillery came to be. I love Bully Boy during regular business hours so we were stoked when we found out they were having Bully Boy Day. We happily paid $120 for 4 tickets but were very disappointed with their drinks. Everything was either canned or premade. The ticket included a free drink and free swag but we didn't get the free swag because the supposed swag glasses didn't arrive. My 7 friends and I went to this place after atrociously being mis-serviced by TopMix Bar (dont ever go there). Our bartender was Adrien, who was a gift from the alcohol gods. He was quiet, professional, and answered any questions we had. The made the drinks with excellent precision, made our drinks immediately, and did not miss a beat. We were all appreciative of his service which was a complete 180 from our last shitty bar. The bar is small, but it has a homey feeling and is very finely furnished. Last week, a friend clued me in to something she noticed while flipping through the Improper Bostonian. It seems that a craft distillery had opened in Boston. A. Craft. Distillery. In Boston. Let's just get everybody on the same page here. A distillery. Not a brewery. Breweries make beer. We have a bunch of those in/around Boston... Sam Adams and Harpoon being the most well-known. Not talking about that. Distilleries make distilled spirits. Liquor. Rum. Vodka. Gin. Whiskey. Tequila. Brandy. And for the first time since Prohibition, they're doing it in Boston. Bully Boy. Boston's first craft distillery. Immediately after finding out this place existed, I fired off an email to the distillery asking/begging/pleading/hoping for a look inside their doors. I got a very friendly response back saying "Thanks for the interest. We'd love to have you in. We usually do production in the morning, although we can meet any time. Let us know a time that works. Cheers." AWESOME. I met Dave Willis, the co-founder along with his brother, Will. They grew up on a farm in Sherborn, MA, near Natick/Framingham, and have been passionate about distilling for some time. The whole process of starting a distillery really became a possibility in 2003 when Massachusetts passed legislation allowing farms to use their products for distilling. Dave and Will looked for inspiration from their grandfather's vault of Prohibition-era liquors, and took the name of his favorite horse, Bully Boy, as the title of the distillery, keeping a strong connection to the family farm. Dave gave me a tour of the space, and an overview on their process. Most spirits at Bully Boy start from wheat. Originally, they wanted to source it locally, but no Massachusetts farm was up to the task, so their red winter wheat comes from Aurora Mills & Farm in Maine, and is all-organic. After the tour, I did a tasting of the three unaged spirits: vodka, white whiskey and white rum, of which the rum was my favorite.Vanilla up front, sugar finish. Sweet, but not fruit; brown sugar sweet. As Dave describes: "Like an aged, dark rum that isn't aged." Perfect. Delicious. This really was a visit to my happy place. Dave could not have been more helpful and welcoming, and I even called him a liquor geek at one point, which he freely agreed to. The passion is evident at this distillery, and they've made a very important step, becoming the first to make it this far in Boston. Hopefully it will make the process a bit easier for more distillers to follow, as with the craft brewery revolution of the 1980s. Bully Boy is the first craft distiller in Boston in over 75 years, and went up against one of the most notoriously juvenile alcohol legislative states in New England. And succeeded. For $10 a person, you get a tour which started out for us at 11:00am and what better way to start it out than with a morning cocktail? Yup, fine by me! I knew at that moment that this tour and visit was going to be awesome and it was. It is definitely a hole in the wall type of distillery, but we all learned a ton on our tour of their small facility about their process in making their rum and whiskey and vodka. Our tour was led by one of three total employees that this place has (this guy being not one of the two brothers who founded the place but their first full-time hire!) and he was awesome. Funny, easy to talk to, loved answering our questions, and just seemed like a genuinely fun guy to hang out with. If you are looking for a fancy tasting room like at Harpoon, this is not the tour for you, since it is a bit messy inside, but you get to see their own bottling and labeling process, and it just feels so homey! Then of course the tour ends with tasting all 5 of their liquors and my fav was their new rum they just released! Not being a whiskey fan I even liked their whiskey too! Top notch experience at Bully Boy. My husband had visited their old location for his bachelor party 2 years ago and we decided to visit during a weekend away in Boston. First of all their new location is fantastic. The barrel room and their soon to be tasting room are beautifully designed. We really liked the farmhouse chic feel. Our tour guide was very laid back and approachable; he gave a thorough explanation of how each spirit is crafted without getting overly bogged down in the distilling process. Most importantly Bully Boy has fantastic product. Truly and honestly we enjoyed each spirit we sampled. You could smell the juniper in the gin before tasting and there was not a hint of harshness. We were also surprised how smooth their vodka was. For us vodka is the last spirit we will gravitate towards as it is not a liquor one can typically enjoy neat or on the rocks. Bully Boy vodka defied our expectations! Very clean and crisp without the typical afterburn. We also loved the Boston rum (and consequently purchased a bottle). The molasses overtones truly brought out the essence of a dark rum without overshadowing the character of the spirit. Other favorites included the premixed cocktail Old Fashioned, but honestly all their offerings were top notch. I will say visiting Bully Boy is definitely worth the $10 investment. Between the tour, incredibly generous samples, welcoming staff, unique distilling atmosphere, and expertly engineered spirits you have nothing to lose and everything to gain by giving this place a try. Sooo good. We met the boys after just two or three years, I think, of them being in business, when they gave us samples of vodka and, I think, rum at Martingetti's Liquors in Brighton. I normally don't like any spirits BUT vodka, but it was sooo smooth and light that I could handle even their whiskey at the tour! (GET A RESERVATION ONLINE IN ADVANCE). Their tour guide (Ricki?) knew her stuff and was fun to listen to about how they got the Bully Boy name, their process, backgrounds, etc. I got the Bluth at their taproom and it was also delicious! Go to nearby DBC, Prospect Ciderworks, GrandTen and/or other breweries/distilleries if you can for a full day of Dot/Rox/Southie experience. A friend who couldn't make my bachelor party sent a bottle of Bully Boy White Rum to get the evening started. It was perfect. Smooth and warming. One glass gave me this warm feeling that lasted surprisingly long. It's just...lovely stuff. Crafted with a lot of care. Now, I haven't tried the rest of their offerings, but based on the White Rum alone it's worth five stars so far. And worth making a point to try the rest soon! Bully Boy Distillers threw a secret 1-year birthday speakeasy party. Being registered on the list with a prohibition-style password got you through the doors at the Waterworks Museum. The venue was incredible, usually the museum closes at 4pm but they re-opened from 7pm-11pm for the party. There was a DJ that played swing and mixed the music to make you feel like you were back in the prohibition era. Some bites were passed around, but the main reason why everyone was there...an unlimited open bar with 5 choices including their organic vodka, organic whiskey, and white rum. I did a distillery tour at Bully Boy on Labor Day weekend and it was one of the highlights of our trip! When we first got there, we thought we were in the wrong location because it was a pretty nondescript warehouse, but upon looking up on Yelp, we saw this was the right place. Our guide, Alex, was GREAT! She not only knew her stuff with all of the liquors they distill, but knew all about beer as well (she was the consultant on the Abita Brewery redesign in New Orleans). The tour started off with a drink (we were the last tour of the day so we were allowed as many as we want) and then a couple of videos. She then took us on a tour of the distillery and it was pretty interactive. We got to taste I think 7-8 liquors they make and we could have more of ones we liked (or any really). They're moving to a bigger location in the next few weeks and we definitely want to take a trip back up to Boston to see the new location. Out of everything we did this weekend, my boyfriend said this was his favorite and I've got to admit it was up there for me too!! read more

Great place to visit if you're from out of town or even a local. They have a beautiful tasting room and a awesome staff. Tours end kinda early so check with them before you come down. They have a good amount of craft cheese cocktails on their menu along with a few drink specials depending on the batch being distilled. I, myself, chose to try their dark whiskey flight. Amazing!!! You get a run, whiskey, and a Coctail. They come placed on a beautiful wooden board and in order as they are on the menu. I HIGHLY RECOMEND the Teddies Peanut Butter Dream! The tour was short, the guide super personable, the liquor not so good. It is tough as a start-up. They have an R&D station as they continue to test their delectable delights, or what will eventually become delights I hope. They don't actively sell this in CT yet, which doesn't upset me. Everything had a very chemical taste to it. I couldn't quite wrap my arms around what it was, but every sip was followed with one of those puckered, squinted eye-gestures. I really wish these folks the very best in their venture. Perhaps over time with experience and more testing, they will find their niche in the market. I have come to terms that most of the start-up distilleries will be short and sweet. It as interesting to be able to compare to previous tours we had been on. It was a nice little set-up, but they don't actually distill when they offer tours because they found themselves getting distracted while trying to navigate the tour and conduct business. I guess I can understand since they aren't overly staffed. That said, it really would be nice to see the place in action. read more

Great way to spend a Saturday afternoon. I bought the punch, but really liked the whiskey as well (I'm not a big rum or vodka drinker- excited that they are working on a gin!). Tour and videos combined are maybe a half hour or less before you get to the tasting, which is perfect - and you get punch at the beginning too. Cute merchandise- friends bought tshirts and I got a "You can't root for New England with whiskey from Tennessee" football poster. Thanks to groupon I was able to take a our of the Bully boy distillery today which consisted of about a 15 min tour followed by a tasting of their organic vodka, white run, white whiskey, and aged whiskey. The tour was short and little funny, but not as informative as I would have liked. The tour guide was super nice and personable but wasn't very articulate or engaging. Although I did really like getting to smell inside a barrel of aging rum. The tasting that followed allowed us to taste all of their currently offered spirits. I wasn't expecting a shot of each or anything so I wasn't surprised by the sips we received. To me it was enough! I was surprised by the unaged white whiskey which was very good. The aged whiskey seemed the be the fave amongst the other tour goers but I didn't like it. I really like whiskey though. It just wasn't aged enough for me. The flavors just weren't ready yet. The vodka still had a bit of a burn and could have taken another turn through the filter. The rum, also unaged and white smelled wonderful but is definitely only for mixing and not sipping neat. They do have an aged run coming out this spring though that I would like to try. Small bottles are $15-20 and large bottles are $25-40. It was a great afternoon though and I really like heir start up story, their logo, and their personality. Glad to try something local and support such a fantastic start up! read more

Note: this rating is more for the tour than the distillery itself. We purchased the Groupon for the tour: $20 for two people (about 50% off the regular price). We stupidly waited until the last minute to book a reservation, but the owners were cool about us using it after the expiration date, which was nice. The tour was run by a guy who, I think, was hired specifically to give tours and do marketing stuff. While nice and seemingly knowledgable, he was a bit of a dud when it came to giving a tour. My best impression is: "So, this is molasses... we use it to make the rum. Do you guys want to smell the molasses?" and "We age our whiskey in these old wine barrels... do you guys want to smell the inside of the barrel? The whole tour was basically like that, which I'm willing to tolerate when I know I'm getting a tasting afterwards. However, at this place, they really emphasize TASTE. The tour guide literally dribbled 10 drops or so in my cup, enough to let the tip of my tongue taste the booze. I know they are a small company and can't afford to pour a 2 oz. drink for every person on the tour but, c'mon, I expected to leave with a bit of a buzz. We didn't wind up buying anything because it was just too expensive for us ($30-$45/bottle). I think Bully Boy has a good thing going as far as being a craft distiller in Boston and presumably their prices will come down as they get bigger. I would not pay full price for the tour though. I would agree with another Yelper that their un-aged spirits are probably better as mixers, though they have a new aged whiskey that (I imagine, if I'd actually gotten a good taste of it) would be good on it's own.
