I loved: Beef Bun Someone brought Bun Me Up's beef buns to a party, and they were actually so good that I wanted to write a review. The beef bun was soft, flavorful, and super satisfying. It's the kind of snack that disappears fast once people start trying them. I didn't personally go into the shop this time, so I can't speak much to the service yet, but whoever picked them up made a great choice. These would be perfect to bring to parties, gatherings, or honestly just to have around as an easy crowd-pleaser. I'm definitely interested in stopping by myself now to check out the spot and try more of their menu. I was attending a night market event in San Jose and saw Bun Me Up offers a vegetarian option - fried vegetarian tofu buns - so I decided to order it. It contains marinated tofu with panko bread crumbs, fried till crispy, with assorted vegetables in a BBQ glaze. It was quite good, the BBQ part is sweet and sour and the breaded tofu was yummy, crispy, and didn't just taste like plain tofu so I felt they did a good job with the texture and flavoring of the tofu. We were craving bao buns and were so excited to find this place in San Pedro Square. We got a bit turned around at first since we didn't know their kitchen serves food in Tiki Pete's Bar. The tender soy marinated cuts of pork really hit the spot, and I loved the ají verde sauce that came w the shoyu pork bun. The shaking beef reminded me of the sweet and savory korean bbq meats, and the crispy tofu bun had a hickory bbq flavor. I really enjoyed the angry bird bow! The students were huge fans of rolled tofu and in fact, that was eaten more than the other tasty option, soy garlic chicken. I'm always nervous about trying places that are pop ups inside of other establishments, but I saw this spot featured on SJ restaurant week and as a lover of Vietnamese food I was convinced to give it a shot. The portion size of the Brazilian chicken plate was generous and the smell of the meat certainly got the dog excited on the way home. I liked how balanced the bowl was with the rice, beans, onions, and a very generous helping of meat. One thing I will say is that everything in the bowl is very spicy! We split the plate between two people and neither of us could finish our portions. I trust that this spot knows how to make their meat and serves up delicious food, but I would opt for something different on my next visit. They have a twist with Asian meats in a bao bun with sauce and pickled veggies. These are sandwiches are not large but huge with great flavors. The owner is doing it all and was pleasant as he explained the concept. We ordered (2 per order) different bao buns. Our first order was the Daddy's beef ribeye buns (shaken beef) with pickled veggies. HOMERUN! The flavors complimented the sauteed beef and crispy pieces of veggies. The second order was Shoya (Korean) pork with pickled veggies. Another HOMERUN! The meat flavors were bold and m eff lt in your mouth. The tastes were fabulous. They call it a ghost kitchen, but no need to freak out if you're surrounded by office buildings. This could be the future of takeout food. You get your food and go. There's no wait staff, and only 2 restrooms for like 20 restaurants in one building. I ate my buns in less than 5 minutes in the car although there is a small outdoor seating area. I tried all of the buns except the tofu and my favorite has to be the shoyu pork belly. It is so tender and it is quite saucy which I love. The bun comes with pickled vegetables and other toppings. A close 2nd would be the shaken beef buns which has lots of flavor and brings the classic Vietnamese dish in a portable form. The buns are a perfect snack for only $7 for 2 pieces, that's a great deal. I also highly recommend the mango lassi which is perfectly sweet, creamy and so refreshing. It goes well with the buns. If you're not into creamy drinks, go for the Filipino cantaloupe drink which is light and refreshing. It is the perfect pick me up for your snack. I had high hopes for Bun Me Up, a pop-up in Downtown San Jose. Finding the location was a little tricky--has an address but once you're there--no signs or clear instructions on how to locate it. Luckily, I was just right outside the place when Josh the owner saw me and kindly lead me to the establishment which was inside a tiki bar with whom they share a kitchen with. I ordered an assortment of baos for a party. The presentation was eye-catching and practical, making it great for gatherings. Service from their catering partner, Catering Cow, was stellar--5/5 for their efficiency and friendliness. As for the food, it was a mixed experience: * The pork belly bao was fantastic--juicy, flavorful, and easily the highlight of the meal. * The beef ribeye bao was too sweet for my liking and on the drier side, not my favorite. * The pork shoyu bao was also dry but had a better balance of flavors compared to the ribeye. * The vegan tofu bao had great texture but struggled with flavor balance. The onion hoisin jam, pickled slaw, and naturally sweet bao bun made it overly sweet. The tofu-to-bun ratio was off; once the tofu was gone, it left a hollow bun filled with slaw and onion hoisin jam. I wish it had more of the crispy tofu in it, or maybe just a smaller sized bao for even ratio. They did mention they're still testing the tofu bao, which is promising, but as of now, it needs a little refinement. Overall, I'd rate the food 3/5. Presentation, convenience with online ordering, and friendly service from Josh and Catering Cow 5/5. Bun Me Up has great potential, but there's room for improvement. I'd give them another try in the future because they offer a unique and convenient food option for special occasions or gatherings, but I'd probably stick to the pork belly bao in the meantime! read more

I came to Ruff Kitchen with no idea of what I was going to order. After looking at the menu or different places for 20 mins, I finally decided to order some buns from Bun Me Up. The prices were pretty good and I wanted some cheap eats. I got the Mix and Match buns for $8. I chose the crispy tofu bbq bun and the shoyu pork bun. I also ordered the blackberry guarana. The wait was about 15 mins from when I placed my order. Not bad since I was originally given a 30 min wait. I was notified through text when the order was ready. I went to the designated locker where my order was and grabbed everything. They did not have to confirm that it was my order. The buns came in a cool divided takeout box and was nicely labeled with which bun was which. The buns smelled so good but presentation was alright. I'm not too focused on that since I know it's not always important. The buns were a little oily on the outside. The shoyu bun was good but not absolutely spectacular to me. I liked the crispyness of the tofu bun. The tofu was a mixture of mushed tofu and vegetables. I didnt like the bbq pairing but loved the panko breaded tofu. Oh wow this place is like a Chinese/Vietnamese fusion! I have never tried anything like this before and it is sooo flavorful. If you've ever tried Peking Duck at Chinese restaurants and love it, you'd need to try this place! I love this because the concept is similar but with different flavors of meat and they even have a fried tofu (vegetarian) option! I was also pleasantly surprised by how generously stuffed each bun was, and how well the savory goodness of the meat paired with the refreshing sweetness of the red onions, lettuce, daikon, and cilantro. Their buns are seriously so unique, and I love how they incorporate traditional Asian flavors such as kimchi, shaking beef, and shoyu to craft these beautiful fusion creations. Tried Bun Me Up the other day with my partner was pleased with what we got. I ordered Bun Me Up on Uber Eats for around 4:30 P.M. and the ETA was a reasonable 30 minutes. We ordered one each of every flavor since we wanted to get the full experience and also ordered one Filipino Cantaloupe juice on the side. I will say once you ordered these buns, please eat them immediately, the buns will get super soggy really fast. I recognize this may be my fault since it took us around an hour for us to get to them after we purchased them. Besides that, the buns had a really good flavor, were soft, and had a good chew. My favorite bun was the Shaken Beef because we do always love a good Bo Luc Lac moment, and what I appreciated too was the fresh slaw to make it taste more balanced. As for the other buns, both the shoyu and braised pork had very fatty meat so if you're into that, you would enjoy it, while the spicy pork was very reminiscent of Korean bbq. If you're a vegetarian or want a break from meat you may enjoy the crispy tofu bun too, I will say the sauteed onions were the best part of it.
