Wow! We loved it. Everything we got was really good. We like to pick out 4-5 things and then taste them and take them to go. Here, we got a few items, sat down and after we tasted them, got another 4 things and tasted those and wanted to get more. We didn't because that would be too much sugar (but nothing was overly sweet of course). I can't believe that it took me years to step in here. I've been sleeping on one of the best Asian bakeries . Don't hesitate to stop in and just try a few things. I can't imagine it being disappointing! Like other yelpers have said- they will come from VA to get their fix. That's no small compliment.... It's not easy to get here from VA... people from DC don't want to make the hike up! But if you pair a stop here with the Vietnamese Ba Le or Thai place Kimm In... pretty good! The Indian place and Vietnamese cafe in this plaza also look decent! The bakery is well ACed in the heat and it's clean and cute... not a huge bakery but it was really quite nice. We are regulars here, coming almost every week for 4 years straight. All of the pastries are great and the staff is very kind. Some top choices are the taro hun, bacon garlic roll, hot dog bun, pandan cake. You can ask to have the buns heated which I recommend for the savory ones. OK, sometimes people aren't friendly. It wasn't an issue for me but it's something other people mentioned. Even so, it shouldn't deter you from purchasing. The desserts are PHENOMENAL. One my of favorite qualities about Asian desserts is the delicate sweetness. I took the chance and ordered some with a colleague...thoroughly impressed. The only item I've tried before was the strawberry mousse. So let's get to it. The mousse is delicately sweet, the matcha puff will satisfy your office tea lover (no bitterness), the coffee chiffon tastes like your favorite cappuccino in dessert form without the sugar crash, the custard bun and whipped cream bun WILL be office favorites, the pineapple bun is a perfect vessel for butter with a fried egg, the taro donut is happiness, the red bean mochi has a pillowy texture with subtle sweetness only a bean could provide, and the egg yolk mooncake is like nothing I've experienced. This could easily be a love or hate item. It's love for me :) The ambiance is perfect for a quick bite with friends or a date, but it's just as easy ordering through Uber or taking items to go. I am so delighted to have discovered this gem of a bakery! I have come across many Asian bakeries but this Taiwanese one in particular stands out with its unique offerings. The store is clean and spacious with plenty of seating. Customer service was very helpful and friendly. Prices are reasonable. Last Sunday, I wanted to happily buy a cake for Mother's Day but after I already paid as price tag was shown. The owner suddenly came over and said there was an extra charge because it was a "Mother's Day Special" . Apparently "Special" means rising the price by surprising their customers. Honestly, if there's a holiday surcharge, I would truly understand! But it should be clearly stated before payment -- not after. Very disappointing experience. May be my new favorite Chinese bakery in the DMV (besides Ed Studio). Really affordable prices! I enjoy a classic egg tart and pineapple bun here. I would recommend heating them up at home. There's a wide variety of desserts and drinks here. The drink menu was a bit overwhelming and half of them were handwritten lol. This spot has been around for a long time, yet I find myself just now going. I was nearby for a grand opening, and on my way out, I looked over and was like "OOOOH, I know them!" I couldn't resist dropping in to see the hype. I walked in and was greeted with shelves of delight. There were donuts, puffs, tarts, cakes, and so much more.I could've gotten many many things... but I decided on the taro donut and takoyaki (which was massive). Both were pretty inexpensive given the uniqueness. Beyond the shelves and the register were plenty of tables to sit. I didn't check for Wi-Fi, but I would get in major trouble in a place like that if I worked there. The donut and takoyaki were absolutely fantastic, zero complaints. The staff were also quite kind. If you are looking for the jiggly Japanese cheesecake this is the place! They have a variety of cakes and baked goods that rang from savory to sweet as well. It was mainly service for the pastries and they were all individually packaged so it was very clean and efficient. The cakes, including the Japanese cheesecake, are behind the counter. The have various decorated cakes for you to choose that come in very elegant packaging. The Japanese cheesecake was chilled so it wasn't as jiggly as you see in the videos but it was still very soft, almost melting in your mouth. I was really impressed with a wide variety of asian breads such as savory buns and cream breads. They were all soft, fluffy, nicely seasoned, or balanced in sweetness. I also got passion fruit mouse cake, which was okay. The texture and flavor were great, but it wasn't fully chilled, so lukewarm cake. I felt the big cream on top was too much. I haven't been here in a while and they upgraded! They used to be in a small location in the same center, but now they have this larger location in the corner slot. They have plenty of room to walk around now and seating to talk, eat, and date. Definitely an upgrade from their previous location. Just dropped $50 on bread here and tried 3 on the spot. Delicious. Can't compare to the other Asian bakeries around. They definitely specialize in Asian bread using tanzhong as it is apparent with how soft it is. The service can be slow especially when it's busy. Just not enough to handle the influx of people. We came here on a Saturday and it was packed and then it died down. It's always a spurt of people all at once. I went to Japong Bakery about twice now and they have the most unique baked goods! Their toast with egg and cheese was good, and their desserts such as the taro bread are great. This is a unique Chinese bakery that has items that you can't commonly find. A combination of savory and sweet with many different options. Tuesday 7/23/2024 I was nearby in the area getting food and saw that this spot was within walking distance so I decided to make my return (after nearly 9 months). I was greeted on entry and decided to pick up 4 items: pineapple bun $2.75, taro mochi $3.50, Parmesan ham cheesebun $3.75, French toast $2.50. All the items I got were new except for the Parmesan ham cheesebun which I had last time and throughly enjoyed. - The pineapple bun was a miss for me: the bread was alright but I couldn't taste any pineapple flavor at all. - The taro mochi was pretty solid and it had a very soft texture with filling but I think the taro milky bun is better. - The French toast was a pleasant surprise: it was soft, moist, fluffy, and lightly sweet. All in all, this was a nice a updated visit and it is still a spot that I would recommend and return to in the future. read more

Went the other day for some of our family favorites but left so disappointed with what we got. Used to be one of my favorite bakeries but quality has definitely declined and service has always been poor but the lady who I assume was the manager needs better people skills. Vanilla creme puff tasted bland and creme tasted like gone bad. The milk bread is now different recipe not delicious like before. Just taste liked a plain bread bun but oily, was unpleasant. Mango cake was small and expensive for $7; better at other places especially for portion you get. Sad this place isn't good like it used to be. They charge for bags. There's not a ton of space to sit inside, but the decor is cute and if you can grab a table, it's not a bad place to spend 30 minutes. Their prices are very reasonable and the space is cute so I encouraged you to spend more time and buy more sweets when you visit. Put this on your list of places to visit in Rockville. I liked the offerings but didn't love what I got. Great looking space. There were a fair amount of options including buns, moon cakes, and cakes. I ended up getting an onion bun (childhood fav) and cream puffs. The onion bun was alright. The bread was nice and soft but the flavor was underwhelming. Cream puffs are hard to find so I was excited to see them here. They had chocolate, vanilla and matcha. Unfortunately, they were very mediocre to me. I had the chocolate. The filling was mostly nice. Not too loose or sweet, but the shell was lacking to me. Just kind of a dried shell. Prices are mostly around $3 +/- which seems to be the going rate for these kinds of baked goods. I consider expensive but if you can find something you love, then small price to pay. Would still come back to try some other buns that had caught my eye. read more

You know it when you see it. The purple marbled coloring of a taro bun sticks out among the brown and beige bread of an Taiwanese bakery. I love the taro buns from 85 Degrees, so when I saw this here I had to try it. Japong checks off the right boxes in similarities to the 85 bun: the texture of the bread, the appearance, and the filling! The deep purple color and flavor of the taro inside was so good! Down this with milk and it's a great breakfast. Again, this visit reminded me of 85. The rest of the selection of bread was plentiful and quite similar. Though the cakes and drinks are not on the same level. But I love having this location here, even though it's out of the way for me. The bakery also has a spacious seating area.
