Great food, but some of the staff seemed to be incapable of taking drive-thru orders properly. At one time I said I wanted a beef bowl, then they gave me the meat balls. We used to be regulars until they changed the chips. There used to be homemade parmesan chips that were a great lower calorie option compared to french fries. They've replaced those with lower quality, 500-calorie (!!) potato chips that look like they came out of a bag. Bad change. I'm happy we got a good beef location that can compete with Portillo's. Now you can put down your pitchforks and torches, I know how important Portillo's is to everyone. These guys just opened recently, and have become a quick favorite with the family. It's a very good selection of good food quickly - NOT fast food! They have a great menu, and everything seems to be yummy. The beef is a bit spicier than other places, but I think for the better. The fries here are great, not just stringy fast food fries. Highly comparable to Portillo's. Buona has an expansive menu, fair prices, and a cool interior. Personally, I prefer Portillo's Chicago dogs because they have more flavor and hotter sport peppers, but Buona's Chicago dogs are pretty good too. Delicious fresh fries as well. Weird high-top table concept near the kitchen area because there's an immobile divider running down each table, so you basically have to sit side-by-side with your company. I mean, you could also sit face-to-face like I did with my father when we visited, but I found that the divider made it hard to share food and drink. Anyways, that's just me nitpicking. I had only gone to a Buona one other time multiple years back and do not recall how I felt about it when I left. I went to the new place in Algonquin at the request of my fiance and left full. Excellent. This place just opened and all I can say is that I hope this place continues to operate the way they are now. Cashiers were friendly, service was great, food was outstanding. The manager was even helping clear off and clean tables as people left (they were packed at 230pm). My only complaint was that they have Pepsi instead of coke drink options, but that's just a personal preference. This beef sandwich with gravy was about as good as it gets for the money. read more

I have an interesting history with Buona Beef. Back in the early 1990s I used to produce their television commercials when they ran them on cable TV and they only had two stores in Oak Park and Berwyn. I was also there when they started the catering business. My career was just starting and I learned a lot about customer service from Joe. The Buonavolanto family was an awesome group of hard-working, Italian-Americans and who made an awesome Italian beef sandwich. Now, over 30 years later Buona has several stores around Chicagoland. Just heard that you are the official Italian beef of the Chicago Cubs and White Sox . I was very happy when the new store opened in Algonquin, not far from my home. We now have the opportunity to make fans of our children in addition to my wife and me. To the family I would like to say, Bravo! And, don't ever go away. read more

The "five star" people need to get out more. Buona is okay, but not 5 star. The namesake beef was a vast disappointment. The only flavor was salt, with a burn of pepper. I've had much better. The fries are okay, again, I've had better. Their cheese sauce for the fries was really good, but that's not a 5 star performance either. My son had a chicken sandwich and said it was "good". Note, not great... just good. Again, where do you get 5 stars from that? The place was a madhouse on a weeknight. The dining area is a maze of zigzag tables with people waiting for carryout in random areas. It is also loud, don't go there expecting to have a conversation over your meal. Service, considering the crowd, was good. Fairly quick, food was hot so kudos for that. Summary: Beef=good, but not great. Fries=good, I've had better. Chicken=good, we've had better. Atmosphere=crammed in and zany, not pleasant. So that's why 3 stars. Just okay. If I want better and have the time, I'll travel a bit for better food and atmosphere. read more

So I was excited to have a Buona open near me. Have to say I was a but disappointed with my meal today. I I ordered a beef with hot juicy and an order of fries. Overall the sandwich was delicious but the fries were very salty. I was still hungry after spending close to 10 bucks on my meal and that was without a drink. The sandwich was very skimpy on meat and there was literally only 5 little hot peppers on there. The sandwich was served partially wrapped on a wooden plate with my fries in a white bowl. Rather of had my sandwich wrapped and fries in a box like Portillo's. I will give them one more chance to redeem themselves since today was their first day. Well the day I have been waiting for has arrived! I am so happy that Buona in Algonquin is finally open! I took my granddaughter today for lunch and it was as I expected, great as usual! I really enjoy Buona however every time I order from there my order is messed up. I have "complained " several times but nothing changes.

Can't even come close to Portillos. Besides being extremely over priced, the cheese sauce for the fries tastes fake. I ordered a Naked Beef Bowl ( thinking since it cost more I would get a little more beef as I didn't want the bread), boy was I wrong the portion of beef was significantly less than the 5" beef and cost more. I purchased dinner through the drive-through. I drove home 2 miles away and found that I received someone else's order. I drove all the way back - tired, frustrated and hungry! When I arrived, the worker was expecting me and apologized immediately, then called the manager over. He refunded my money and gave me a fresh batch of soup. So, I received my original order plus another container of soup. This is what I call "great customer service"! I will definitely continue to purchase from Buona!
