I have been a die hard Portillos guy for my whole life. When they sold I felt as if the product had worsened in an attempt to enforce higher quality control. Because of the "new", smaller less delicious portillos beef had forced my hand I branched out. A buddy told me about Buona and even though I lived in Humboldt Park, I made the trek to Buona and have never looked back. Only thing I miss from Portillos is the crinkle cut fries...not the beef, not the cake shakes.... Want a high quality, good sized, great bread delicious beef, come here and try some chicken tenders too. Service is also AWESOME. Very nice and helpful and always a smile on their face. read more

This was absolutely the WORST sandwich I have ever had and it's an insult to "real" Chicago beef stands to call it a "Chicago" beef. I ordered the combo "baptized", which is supposed to be the juiciest one they have, i.e., what a real place would probably called soaked. And yet, at least half the bread was completely dry, I also ordered it with provolone cheese, which they place on the bottom, under the sausage. As a result, rather than melting into the beef, it was melted so much that it was virtually liquified.I can think of at least 10 better places for a REAL beef sandwich. Buona Beef if to Italian Beef sandwiches what Portillo's is to hotdogs. It knows what to do and it does it well. It's fast food and it's not a hole-in-the-wall. I've never seen it crowded, but that doesn't mean it's not good. This particular Buona Beef Restaurant has a drive through, small parking lot, and a clean, spacious interior. You order at the counter and then your food is brought to you. Service is okay. The folks at the counter have always been polite to me. It does take a long minute to get your food. I attribute that wait to them making it fresh. They've been gracious enough to package all of the sandwich components separately for me so that they don't get soggy during my drive home. I was VERY impressed. I appreciate how the beef isn't chewy or fatty. I like how the cheese fries has nacho-like cheese for dipping. Whenever I go I always get the Italian Beef (dipped) with cheese fries. P.S. I can eat here a couple times a week and not feel guilty at all. This is the Buona Beef my family always goes to when we go out to eat beef sandwiches. I'm from TN and moved to the area a few years ago. I had never even heard of beef sandwiches before. My husband who is from the area grew up on beef sandwiches. We used to go to Portillo's all the time and it was good. But we kept passing Buona Beef and I kept asking what it was. He eventually took me and after that I fell in love! Haha the beef in my opinion tastes much better than anywhere else. I also love all the other menu items aswell. The Pollo Pomodoro Sandwich and Broccoli Soup is one of my favorite meals. During the summer I'll get the pasta salad instead which is outstanding. The other great thing is that they offer a large kids menu. The grilled cheese is my sons favorite. He is a very picky eater and he gobbles up the whole sandwich with no complaining (trust me this is very rare!). The portion sizes of the food is a great deal for the price paid and the presentation when dining is is a nice touch. Lately with having a busy life and a new baby going out to eat is a rare occurrence. Thank goodness for their family beef sandwiches to go. It's always a great deal. We have been coming here since we moved into town a few months ago. I know that they are a "chain" but they honestly have a good beef (The secret is in the gravy and they have a good one..) and coming from an area in the heart of Chicago where we've experienced great food, I'd like to think. So long story short, I wasn't that impressed with the "local favorite" in our area, with their line always out of the door and I was quite fond of this "beef chain" restaurant down the street. That is until I realized a sad flaw in the management of the store... they are extremely inconsistent. I've had orders that are not consistent. Either the wrong size or the wrong ingredients, that I've overlooked... but today was honestly the last straw. I feel that the people who work here, ie the kids who are running things in the back, are either too concerned with flirting and socializing with one another or trying to rush through my order to get back to flirting and socializing with one another. Coming here more times then I'd like to admit, you get to observe the ones who ttake their job seriously and put attention to detail, and the ones who could not careless.. Today I experienced the later and the results where my and my husbands dinner all over the walkway of my house and subsequently my kitchen floor.. chili and beef everywhere! This location is one of the Buona originals - used to be a Jack-in-a-Box on this site years back. They've remodeled recently, though I have yet to go inside - just use the drive thru. Fries are inconsistent. Sometimes they're a little "steamy" and fresh and flavorful, other times they're kind of cold and disinteresting. Generally the taste of their beefs are pretty good, though as chains go, Portillo's gets my vote for flavor. What moved them down a notch in my book was after my last visit. I ordered a 9" combo and fries. I got home, took the fries out of the bag, then went to pull the sandwich out. Well, they had rolled the paper around it, but failed to close one end - the end facing down in the bag! So, when I took my sandwich out, all that came with the wrapping was the roll and one of the pieces of Italian sausage on the roll. The rest of it dumped in the bag. Today was my first time at Buona Beef. So I can only vouch for this location, and maybe I just had beginners luck, but hopefully not. Up until today, I had only ever heard about Buona Beef. I'm hardly ever moved to review a restaurant, but I was very impressed with this location. The place was clean and spacious. The service was so friendly and welcoming and the food was great. Since it was our first time, we were ordering different things with different requests for each and the person taking our order was patient and understood us completely, even with my Grandmother who has a reputation as being quite picky and persnickity. She can be quite a handful, but he was so respectful and not only mentioned he would personally see that her order was made just as she wanted it, he actually went back and did it! I saw and heard it with my own eyes and ears. Then of course there was the food! I had an Italian beef, dipped with sweet and hot peppers, and it was great! A nice portion with just enough of all the trimmings. Not too much and not too little, and dipped just the way I like it. Even the bread it was on tasted great and fresh. I also had an order of cheese fries. The fries were fresh and crisp, and cut kinda thick, also the way I like them. The cheese was nice and hot. Soooooo good! I'm not gonna lie though, when I first saw my plate, I was a little concerned it wasn't big enough for me (because I tend to eat a little more than a normal person my size). But the portion was great. My sister ordered a grilled chicken caeser salad, and I just had to try some because it looked so good! I went through the drive thru and ordered: Small Beef, extra, extra, extra juicy ( bread was barely wet) I asked for extra juice on the side, which your staff so kindly placed in the bag only to have it leak all over the other items(thanks much). By the way, the beef was overly peppery, did someone add too much, other locations do not taste like this. Tuscan Harvest Salad. I asked for 2 extra dressings. Since the salad comes with one, asking for 2 extra, should add up to 3, right? Not at Bouna, 2 extra is 2 ONLY. For $7.50, could you fill the bowl with lettuce, if not, use a smaller container, or charge less. Your price/value is very poor to say the least. In the mid-1980s, in the same Sun-Times (Pat Bruno) article which reviewed italian beef sandwiches; the top two were Mr. Beef on Orleans, and (the original) Al's on Taylor St. The _surprise_ was the 3rd choice. It was the then only Buona Beef on Roosevelt Rd. in Berwyn. I went there a few times. But this isn't a review of there. In 1989, Buona began expanding. _This location_ on west North Ave was its second. It is a fascinating location when you consider all the other italian beef shacks on North Ave. (Michael's, Johnnie's; and even Russell's if you want to spin-off into BBQ beef). There have been italian beef shacks which have, in this time span, *bitten the dust*. There was one at 6266 W North Ave. on the Chicago side of the street, and another in the strip mall north of North Ave. on the Elmwood Park side of the street (where the Pet Supplies + is). Rob W. hadn't been inside. Seemingly, what was renovated is: The trash baskets have been removed from the front of the store. Reusable plastic plates and cups (for your ketchup) are utilized. Someone comes out from behind the counter to bus your table after you leave. The beef sandwich is what I submit you should order here. It is available in three sizes. I had the regular 7". The beef sandwich is very good. The beef is thin, but not too thin that it falls apart, or out of the sandwich. I ate in. I had no snag with its temperature. (I wonder how far afield frank f. took his sandwiches.) (To be 'frank' in another sense; I wonder if the reason his reviews come up near the top on "Yelp Sort" is because Yelp really wants Buona to ante up and become a sponsor - at which point frank f.'s reviews might even be "filtered".) The giardiniera is different than other stands in that it has green olives. However, I think it has too many capers. I like more celery and carrots. The stand wants you to opt for its meal combinations. The french fries I had were good, with or without ketchup. If you want to have a soda - I think you should go for the meal combination. A "medium" (there is no "small") drink is $1.80 (more than the fries), which seems profiteering. I give Buona a four-star rating because, although the beef is very good, I think it is a lesser value for the money than other italian beef shacks in its vicinity. Have the italian beef, but watch out for those 'extras' which remind me (unpleasantly) of airlines. I'm not a business consultant, but I ponder that Buona has overextended itself with too many locations. Transit options: Lots of ways to get here. Both the CTA #72 North and #90 Harlem routes will put you within one block. Pace suburban bus routes #307, #305, and #318 also serve North & Harlem. We'll let start off by saying bueno beef has step up their game, when we walked in we were immediately greeted. I noticed that they remodeled the interior with a modern contemporary look that's beautiful. Everything from the menus,to the seating,walls and floor colors,to the way they plate the food and bring it out to you. I had their lunch special which was the cheesy beef with hot peppers & cheddar broccoli soup. It was really good. You need to come experience the difference for yourself it was superb. The customer service is outstanding the gentleman that took our order is one of the best me and my wife have ever encountered. I walked in too because it seems you always get screwed going through the drive thru. 4 hotdogs and 2 fries about 10min wait. I said I wanted fresh fries so I figured that's what the wait was for. Nope they were bad too. I live 3 blocks away so. It wasn't because of the trip home. Just a big disappointment. The way the food comes out is because there is a lack of pride with the people working there. The is no way you should be able ring your bun out because it's soaked with mustard. Well the order process thru door dash went fine..and that is where the fine ended. I received a text that my order was picked up at 12:15----slated delivery time 12:26. At 1:05 I called my dasher and she proclaimed that it would be another 15-20 minutes because she was on a BICYLE riding the 7 miles to my place. When the food arrived it was ruined..it was tossed out. I called Buona who immediately said they were not interested in helping me with the problem, they could re-make the food, but not deliver it...great attitude. I then called door dash and spent about 40 min on hold in their lovely phone system..they said that it was an "accident" that the delivery was allowed on a bike..basically saying it was Buona's fault. Writing this review on their newer addition of pasta (only) to the menu, since I couldn't find any reviews before I went there. While their noodles -- fettucine and rigatone -- seem made from scratch and perfectly al dente -- their sauce portion to ratio is completely amiss... enough to figure out what the dish is supposed to be -- alfredo or tomato basil -- but the buck stops there, merely enough sauce, which ends up making the dish totally and completely dry; not to mention portions are really small. Luckily I went there on a Sunday, when pasta was served at a discount, but there is absolutely no way I would ever pay full price for what I received this evening, nor ever again, even on a Sunday for that matter, unless they seriously look into changing their sauce-to-portion ration AND increasing their portion ration to suit that of an adult in the future. Luckily they included some bread (a small amount, two pieces per order) with each order which was tasty.
