Disappointing Experience and Overcharged I visited Lori Eugenio's optometry practice for an eye exam and glasses and was charged almost $500. The frames were of poor quality, seemingly sourced cheaply from China. At the time, I didn't know what the going rate was, and since I knew her personally, I felt embarrassed to question the price. So, I paid the amount, trusting her and not expecting to be taken advantage of. Recently, I had an eye exam at another optometrist office (this exam was $85- no additional charges) and the doctor informed me that my eyes are fine for over-the-counter reading glasses, and I didn't need prescription lenses. Given that I have a +1.50 prescription, this made me realize I was likely overcharged for something I didn't need, which is deeply disappointing. I would not recommend this practice to anyone and advise others to be cautious when seeking services here. read more

I missed my appointment because of uncertain circumstances. I call to reschedule and they say I have to pay a $50 "no show" fee before another appointment could be made. I've never had this with any other doctor appointment in my 50 years on planet earth. I will be now looking to move my entire family away from this place. That is absurd. And it was never mentioned beforehand if you don't let us know ahead to reschedule you would be charged a fee. Poor communication cost you 4 clients. read more

I have been going here for years and love it. There is parking in the back. (Pull in by Train Shack) They offer a discount for cash payment. It is a nice, clean and organized office. The staff is friendly and efficient. Dr. Nishida is exceptional. She is very friendly and helpful. I have gone here for glasses, then got lasik and more recently I found out I had a detached retina during a routine visit. She and her staff talked me through everything. Dr. Nishida is an absolute blessing. If you want to feel comfortable and know you and your eyes will be well taken care of I highly recommend going here! read more

Called to make an appointment and the appointment person, Sebastian was very professional, helpful and patient. On the day of the appointment, we were asked to wear masks (no problem) , the eye exam machines appeared to really help analyze my eyes and after speaking with the Dr and a thorough discussion about my daily vision activities, I felt confident in the recommendations and purchased a new pair of glasses that day. Dr. Nishida-Eugenio and the staff are great. I highly recommend this place. Their system with taking in patients is very organized. You can set up an appointment online, and they are very responsive through e-mail and text messaging. And, they do take safety precautions very seriously, and I am impressed. Dr. Nishida is delightful; she has a thank you sign for healthcare workers ready in case she has patients who are in the healthcare field. She walked in with that sign, which is very sweet! Dr. Nishida is very pleasant, and she would explain to you everything, although I didn't ask her that much question, I do know that she is knowledgeable and loves what she do. Ask her anything, and I am sure she will have an answer. Their mode of communication is pretty simple. You can reach them thru text, e-mail and you can call them. What's great about the e-mail is it will send directly to Dr. Nishida and she would respond to them, too. It is nice when the doctor actually communicates with their patients. Her staff is excellent, and they are very organized. Although they are wearing a mask, I can still see that they are smiling, and are good at what they do, they will explain to you everything from the breakdown costs of the exam that they performed. My old optometrist office closed, so I needed to find someone new. Going through my insurance company, I found Burbank Optometric and Dr. Nishida. Turns out, they were right down the street from me, making it an easy choice to try them. I was glad I did! Everyone was really nice. They were also extremely thorough. I had tests done there that I don't remember doing anywhere else (in a good way). They're also very safe when it comes to covid precautions. I am very happy with Dr. Nashida and team. After two optometrists (one a popular chain that behaved horribly) I visited the offices of Dr. Nashida. I've been with them for a few years now. Dr. Nashida listens to your concerns, and she'll work hard to find a solution. I was having issues with my contact lenses and glasses, my prescription wasn't working from my constant swapping of glasses to contacts. We worked together, she made suggestions, we tried a few options and finally found a fantastic prescription that works for both my glasses and contacts. Veronica helped me select frames. She was honest and right on point. She suggested frames suitable for my skin coloring and face shape and size. Err... I'm not quite sure... my first experience here was with Dr. Simms and I really was confident that I found an optometrist who cared about you and knew what he was doing. Fast forward to a few years later, and the practice has changed completely. They try to sell you medicine for your eyes that should help prevent it from getting worse (for $60 for a three-months supply), and extra tests for "only $35!" ... I have never had such a complicated and unprofessional experience with a optometry center. I will start off by saying that the optometrist I met with (Dr Nishida-Eugenio) was great. I felt I was in good hands with her as I had my eye exam. The support staff however? A disorganized mess. During my pre-exam tests the optician helping me had no idea how to use their machines, or how to do anything for that matter. She was asking for help every step of the way, it was very unprofessional. After 20 minutes of looking into a light and being told not to blink while she tried to learn how to use the machine I started to get more and more furious. The nightmare really started when it came to billing. They did not bill me properly which resulted in a three month long battle between them and my insurance broker. They are incredibly vague in the bill breakdown and do not voice cheaper alternatives unless you ask. I did not feel they were looking out for their patients as much as they were looking for loopholes to make themselves a quick buck. You would think that for how much they charge they would adjust your glasses to make sure they fit your face perfectly? They didn't even offer. I was so disappointed, I had high hopes for this place and it ended up being an awful experience. You couldn't pay me to go back to this facility. read more

When back to pick up my completed glasses this morning. The "tech" or whomever did not check fit or adjust the frames. I ended up going to another shop on my lunch break to get the frames adjusted. She also didn't clean the lenses before giving them to me. The frames came in random case. I asked for the case that went with the frames and they said they didn't provide those. One of the worst experiences of my life... I used to go here as a child and then we randomly switched to another doctor. Now I get an idea of why.. I came back here as an adult to have an eyeglass and contact lens exam. Everything went well. Until I received the contacts. The prescription was so off and it hurt my head so much to try and see through them. I told my doctor and we changed the prescription a bit. This went on for about 3 or 4 times until she finally just thrust me upon another doctor. The same thing happened until I went through just about every doctor there and I STILL have contacts that feel like there's saran wrap in my eye. I just can't understand why none of the doctors there were able to get me a comfortable contact with almost perfect visibility. It's happened before with my previous doctors so I assumed this would be no hassle. Doctors know what they're doing, right? Wrong. I tried to save a few extra bucks by using a cheaper doctor and it gave me the hassle of a lifetime. My mistake. read more

I have been going here for 15 years and ever since I had lasik (through another office) my visits have been infrequent because my vision is now 20/20. Dr. Simms was great. Dr. Sowbe was interesting. The new practice now that it's out of Simms' hands is unacceptable. The past three appointments my family has booked were full on wait-fests. If an office is obviously busy and crowded you can tolerate long waits but no joke, the last visit we were the only ones in the waiting room for 1.5 hours for a CHILD'S normal, every year appointment. Three different appointments where our appointment time was ignored in excess of an hour means they've lost us as customers. It's sad because it used to be a great local shop. Followup: though the wait time was acceptable on our final appointment, they messed up my son's Rx. They got him used to one Rx for a week on contacts and at the followup when they produced the physical Rx, it was lower than what he'd gotten used to even though the ones in his eyes (the higher Rx) were deemed to be working perfectly. ???? When I called about the discrepancy, the optician said he'd check. I got a call back saying, yes, that's the right Rx. I was out and it was just a message and got back after closing time so can't sort this out until next week but SERIOUSLY? You let people try the wrong lenses for a week, then give them the real Rx? The only reason they get a star here is because you can't give ZERO - which they earned from me. I will get this contacts mess fixed and will never come back. read more

I saw Dr. Veal for the first time today. She's wonderful. More thorough than any ophthalmologist I've ever seen before, and exceedingly patient with all of my many questions. I wish the optician department had a few more eyeglasses for guys with big heads like me (I'm serious, I've got a cantaloupe for a head), but the optician helped me find a great pair of glasses. All in all, I couldn't recommend these folks highly enough. I've found my ophthalmologist. read more

I've been going here my whole life. Dr. Sowbe was the original Owner/Doctor and I was fan and a friend. (RIP) Awhile back he sold his practice over to Dr. Nishida and retired. This was a sad time for the business, and things just fell apart. Customer service was terrible, communication and follow up was horrific. I swore I would never, ever go back again. Well I was wrong. I recently decided to go back to "test" their facility after hearing things had changed for the better. I was pleasantly surprised! 99% of the staff had been replaced, and the apparently business started with a clean slate. Thank goodness, the ships sailing again!! I had a lovely experience here! It had been a while since I had my eyes checked and knew I needed a new prescription. A friend referred me and I made an appointment for a week later - many followups and reminders along with the convenience of filling out the paperwork online. Dr. Nashida was lovely and felt like she really wanted to get to know me. They spent a lot of time with me picking out frames - I was on a budget, no insurance and they really made it work. I've been to Burbank Optometric Center 5-6 times over the years and never had a complaint until the last visit when they refused to hand over my contact lens prescription. I used to see Dr. Sims. He was not available so Dr. Sowby examined me. I have no complaints about the medical aspect of their services. I came for a regular checkup and to see if something can be done about my eye dryness. The dry eye problem was not resolved to my satisfaction, but I was not expecting miracles. The contact lens prescription remained the same (has not changed in years). The problem was on the checkout. Rita was eager to place the order for six months supply of disposable lenses. Although I usually buy my lenses online I was fine with the Dr. office making some money on the lens markup. We placed an order, they charged my credit card. Then I requested my prescription. Rita responded that they could not give it to me right away, that I needed to wear the fresh pair of lenses they gave me and come back in a week for a "fit check" when they would determine if these were the right lenses for me. They would give me the prescription at that time. This made no sense because I've been wearing the exact same type and power of lenses for years. On top of that, why would they place an order for the lenses if the proper prescription could not be established at the time? To me this looked as a thinly veiled disguise to ensure a sale and have me return for another appointment. Sure, in California an optometrist does not have to dispense the prescription until the fit check is done but in my case that made absolutely no sense as I've been wearing the same lenses for many years. I pleaded with Rita, she talked to Dr. Sowby (I think) and the answer was negative. Then I decided to cancel the contact lens purchase. I explained to Carla that I had been a satisfied patient for years and that I'd like to resolve the issue in several days. A lot of time has passed and I received no calls from the office. Visit to this office was like a travel in time when getting a lens contact prescription from an optometrist was like pulling teeth. read more

The service I had at BOC was acceptable and the staff very nice. However, the cost of the eye exam was out of control. Over the phone, I was quoted a price of around $200 for the eye exam. I told them that I was coming in to renew my contact lens prescription. After the exam, I was told that I on top of the $200 fee, there was an additional fee of $150 for the contact lens fitting. Outrageous! I called other optometry centers, and not one of them charged even half of that for contact lens fittings. Others also had packages that were more affordable. I now have to go back in a week to get my prescription because they wouldn't give it to me until my follow-up visit. Very disappointing. I will not be a repeat customer. As a follow up, the doctor called me tonight and heard my thoughts on the visit. She waived the contact lens fitting charge.
