Visited at lunch on a Saturday for the first time in awhile with wife, toddler, and friend since our friend had never been. Found seating outside but moved some plates ourselves from one table to another to find shade for us the kiddo. Grabbed a high chair and got seating set up. A few folks were setting up to play music out on the patio. We ordered inside as expected, thankfully the line wasn't too bad at that time so it went smoothly, though the prices are still higher than the average mom/pop sandwich place (but we anticipated this). We waited a bit for food while the patio band played. Ambience was pretty nice. Our friend's sandwich came out first and about 5 minutes later our food came. However, the Arnold Palmer we ordered didn't arrive with the food so we asked if they'd come back to bring it, and we were told they'd be right back. We waited probably another 5 minutes but drink still didn't come so I went inside to ask about it and saw the drink sitting on the back counter. So I asked staff if I could pick up the drink and they handed it over. Our friend's sandwich (the Jester) looked pretty filling while wife and I ordered/shared the Crown Jewel with cheese and mayo on the side. The Crown Jewel was pretty meh overall. Wasn't as stacked as the Jester and the bread fell apart as I ate it, despite the mayo on the side. At the end of eating someone came by to grab our order numbers and ask how things went. I commented on the wait for the drink and was told they couldn't find us, which sounded strange because they found us when bringing the sandwich and we still had our order number. But she said we could get a free refill. Since I wanted to take advantage of the refill I went inside to inquire but the order counter had gotten extremely busy. So I asked one of the bus/wait staff outside if they could grab my refill. He directed me inside and he commented how busy they were but I said I didn't want to wait in the huge line simply for a refill, so he offered to meet me inside to get the refill. Eventually I did receive the refill and we left. Overall, for the price of the food I felt the service was very average bordering on subpar, and the food was meh for the price. I don't blame the staff as they all seemed to be working very hard, but perhaps they were understaffed which would be more of a management issue. We basically bussed a couple tables on our own and waited what eventually amounted to 20-25 minutes for an ice tea/lemonade. I pre-tipped when I bought the food, which I kind of regretted but also felt bad that the employees were understaffed so I likely would have left a tip anyways. I don't plan to go back anytime soon. I've passed by this place quite a few times on my drive and had always been curious about it. The cute patio caught my eye, and I saw people brunching, so I had no choice. I love a spot with a lot of character, which is exactly what this place is. Vibes immaculate, huge variety of coffee/matcha drinks, and fresh food all around. I went for breakfast burrito and my usual iced vanilla latte. Great combo. It tastes great, and I loved the salsa verde on the side. It was a good portion, and I left feeling satisfied. I absolutely loved sitting outside and having fresh air with a great view. You are given a number at the counter, and your food is brought out to your table. Damn these are some solid sandwiches. I'm a sucker for chicken pesto and the Crown Jewel did not disappoint. It's thick and moist and ever so filling. I was sad when I was done. Roast Beef sandwich was delish. The au jus was bit salty for me, but still yum yum in the tums. My friend got the Mozzafiato Italian Balboa. She didn't share with me, but it looked good. This has been open for 4-5 years while I was still under the impression of the previous cafe (which was also a local gem). So glad I stopped by and finally tried their deli -- Good coffee and sandwiches. The short rib sandwich, which they refer to as "stack" comes in a BIG portion with flavors. I also like the Crispy Capers Egg Salad. The layers of taste and interesting combination of fried capers with creamy but not greasy egg salad is AWESOME! I was expecting the OG pesto sandwich I used to get from here when it was the previous cafe (Fiore). Fiores bread was heavenly. Freshly baked bread is no longer as someone who bakes fresh bread that's what kept me coming back. Prices are now higher $19 for the sandwich and you no longer get the side salad (which was a great lil meal) I know I shouldn't expect the exact same item from a different cafe but it was extremely underwhelming for me. Chicken was dry, not enough pesto and the lack of a soft freshly baked bread left me missing the previous Fiore's quality. Somehow my bread ended up getting super soggy and I had to eat with the fork n knife provided. Is that why is was provided? Likely won't come back to spend $30 on a solo lunch. $19 chicken sandwich additional $5 for tomato n bacon. And $8 matcha just ain't it. Ordered Doordash and my order came quite fast - less than an hour! Got the San Marino sandwich ($23.40) and I was impressed by how big the sandwich was! The bread was so fresh and soft. The tuna salad had huge chunks of tuna and wasn't drenched with mayonnaise like how tuna salad sandwiches usually are at other places. The tuna salad was very delicious and packed with flavor! If you like very tasty, but healthy/clean food, with special extra whole food ingredients that give the food pops of flavor, varying texture (crunch) and visual appeal - you will not be disappointed!! It comes with a side of delicious bread pieces, which is a nice touch, but it's also really nice that they ask if you'd like it. I hate wasting food, so it's great that they ask. Speaking of their dishes, literally they have the cutest dishes too, as in ceramic dishes that again besides what's in the dishes, it adds to the visual appeal and it makes my experience so warm and welcoming. I should also mention that I've tried their wraps and sandwiches, they're amazing. The turkey chili - GET IT! So good and doesn't taste like turkey at all but it's not super greasy like beef chili. Back to the ambiance...there is no indoor seating here. All seating is in their surrounding patio and it is adorable and enjoyable. Wooden two-person or group tables and with single seat chairs. Umbrellas cover most of them and give shade. But on a hot summer day, with the sun beating, it could get a little uncomfortable if you're there too long at about 2pm. I've been there a few times on a Friday afternoon, and they have had a vocalist, pianist & saxophone player playing some cover songs and they are good! Makes the experience that much more enjoyable. I'm not someone who enjoys sweet drinks, but I can speak to their delicious brewed black iced tea. Perfection every time. Parking is easily found on the surrounding streets, close by and you can even score some shade if you're lucky to park under a tree. Last, but not least, the staff are really friendly, helpful and give great customer service and table side service. Street parking is decent for a busy downtown area, though it could be better. STRAWBERRY MATCHA: Honestly, if this review were based on the matcha alone, it would probably be a 1-2 star rating. I could barely taste the matcha, and based on the color, it didn't seem like high quality. The strawberry portion was just okay, but at $11.50 (per the Yelp menu), it's way overpriced. I finally made it to this shop after having it bookmarked for ages and wow, I'm so glad I did. This corner sandwich joint is truly a hidden gem. I'm a long, long-time fan of this formerly iconic café, but I am certain that it has truly fallen off. Service with a smile but no follow-through. The last four times I visited (two at South Pas, two at San Marino), my order was completely forgotten about. Once for something as simple as a coffee and a muffin. And keep in mind that when they say they close at 3pm, that means 'at some time before 3pm, subject to the person working the register asking the chef if they're willing to make food right in front of the customer.'
