Staying in San Diego for comic con and our hotel is in little Italy. We were looking for some food and came across this little restaurant nearby. It's seat yourself and you can sit indoors or outdoors. We sat inside with a nice view of the bar and the tv showing a baseball game. Got a couple beers from a nice selection and appreciate they have 5, 10 and 16 ounce options. I got the burger and fries - delicious - and wife got the eliota fries with steak. Cute space (check out the "clouds" on the ceiling!) with good quality menu items, but the kitchen is still working out some kinks and the wait staff makes itself a little too scarce for optimal service. Our Falling Panzanella Salad (roasted butternut squash, brussels sprouts, baby kale, shaved onion, ciabatta croutons, toasted pepitas, goat cheese, pomegranate, and mango vinaigrette) came with the pork belly we opted to add, but sans the advertised mango vinaigrette. Easy fix, right? Except our server never checked on us again after dropping off our food so we had to wait until we could get someone's - anyone's - attention. By the time the dressing (which, funnily enough, didn't actually taste anything like mango but was certainly preferable to having a dry salad!) finally arrived, we were halfway done eating. To the restaurant's credit, the server whose attention we managed to get (not the one who originally took and delivered our order) did offer to bring us another complete salad, and when we politely declined, proactively discounted the dish by 50% on our final bill. We enjoyed our beers with their big Bavarian pretzel, it was fresh out of the oven and hot. It came with a spicy mustard and cheese dip and was very filling. We stopped in here after the No Kings protest. The place was packed full of people. They did the best they could to serve everyone as quickly as possible. We tried a pretzel and had root beer. The servers remained calm, cool and collected, despite the chaos within their establishment in terms of the number of people. I can't help but wonder what ambiance is like on a normal day. read more

Beer and pub food by downtown! I didn't have beer but my friends did and enjoyed that you can try different ones in a flight or various sizes of choice. I had the burger and I got it medium rare but it was quite pink. The pink itself I liked fine but what I didn't Ike was that the bun was also pink and essentially soaked with the pink meat juice. My tomato was also a huge slice which made it hard to take bites decently. The fries were good, the wings were good (though quite spicy), the shrimp tacos were smaller than expected for the price but my friends seemed to enjoy them. Overall, we enjoyed it and my kids inhaled their medium cooked burgers! We walked over from the USS Midway so totally walkable so you don't have to find additional parking! read more

Went for a salad today, and we were served a salad with vegetables that looked like leftovers from the market. We have never had uncooked vegetables that are so spoiled and decayed. When we inquired about the reason, the chef said that the whole box of vegetables was like this when he received it. So he just served his customers "as is"? We wanted light beers, ordered their blonde beer and some else we gobbled... while hanging out at the bar, we could look into the kitchen and I noticed the carefully tied long hair of the chef and how his beard was grown out to his sternum and untethered. With the food and safety classes I've taken and chefs I've worked with, facial hair is to be covered or kept tidy and his beard was not. Yeah I'm here to drink beer, yeah I ordered food and the thought of his curly beard hairs crossed my mind. I survived, and may have gotten grossed out of a potential cross contamination situa... I ordered the "for the love of beer" IPA 6.3% which was really good; I ended up ordering a second one. For the food: I ordered the bacon burgeon burger: angus beef, Swiss cheese their in-house burger sauce, bacon lettuce, pickles and tomatoes served on a potato bun and a side of French fries, can't beat that! This meal was a 5/5 for me, the burger was made medium well and it still retained its juice, the bun was amazing as well, and the fries were hot crispy and addicting. San Diego stop 3- a change up in neighborhood due to closer proximity to the Music Box. My friend and her husband hadn't been to Burgeon before so it was nice to try them out with her and get some light bites in before live band karaoke. Love the interior design - all the soft color tones and wood, which was a stark contrast to the (amazing) music the beertender was playing - lots of angsty emo pop. Apparently he is in a band that does shows in the southwest (woo!). Him and our server were so sweet, nice industry people to chat with. This Burgeon has a solid food menu in addition to all their beers, so we decided to get flights (not feelings) and snackies. Their rotation is super heavy on IPAs (meh), but luckily for me they had a solid Mexican lager on tap to help break up the hops. My picks - Sunshape, Invita, JuciePress, Sicksuds. Clear winner was SunShape as it was perfect mix of citrus and hops. We ordered a pretzel, wings and fries to share - super delish bites to keep us going! We told the chef "dealers choice" on wing sauce and he did no wrong giving us the Korean sauce- something he hadn't done before...plus a little ranch (hashtag Midwest). The fries are hot, crunchy, and taste like they are "double fried" like in Amsterdam. We also had a happy hour order of wings (which are on special on Wednesdays). We picked "Bama" wings. We enjoyed them, saucy! [My husband was here for Yelp Elite. I had a bite of his fried salmon nugget and fish taco. Came here last Wednesday evening with a group of friends and had a nice time. The ambiance is nice as the place is an open concept layout. It's great to feel the downtown atmosphere while in the restaurant. There is street parking and a paid parking lot across the street. The service was great, hence the 4 star rating I gave. The two guys working were super friendly and helpful. It was a busy night and they were hustling but still able to take care of everyone. The prices were pretty high. My glass of Sauvignon blanc (standard pour) was $14 before tax and tip. Same with the food. The burger was $20, nothing added, and to be honest was kind of basic. So be prepared to pay for being downtown. I feel like this place would be a great place to stop on the way to a Padres game in the summertime. Grab a beer before you head into the park. read more
