Met up with a friend here a bit ago and had a great time! I'm still thinking about those Vietnamese wings. We went for happy hour after work to catch up. The vibe is chill, relaxed and rustic. The low ligting and warm tones really set the mood of the place. You definitely know why it's called the whiskey house the moment you step through the door. The rows and rows of bottles that line the wall is downright impressive. We both got a Kentucky Mule and it was nice and strong. We also ordered a bunch of food. My friend got the civiche, I got the saussage on a roll, and we shared the Vietnamese wings and fries. Everything was tasty, but the wings were to die for. I loved them so much I ordered a second basket. Tangy and flavorful, you've got to try them! Our sever was super sweet and attentive. I can be a bit indecisive sometimes, and she was great at helping us find something. She suggested a beer on tap for my friend and I ordered a shot of whiskey (it is, after all, the whiskey house). Their happy hour slaps! I work downtown and sometimes my breaks align with their hours and I'm able to go for them or even after work with coworkers. The food is always good and the price is great! The servers are always kind and quick, but this place can get very busy so understandably service can be slow sometimes. I just pregamed here before seeing MCR and I had a blast (again)! read more

So if whiskey is your thing, this place definitely delivers! The food was a little more hit-or-miss for me. I ordered the Vietnamese wings, and unfortunately they were overdone to the point of being almost burnt. That was disappointing, but everyone else in our group enjoyed their food, so my wings may have just been an off order. Minus One Star: Called ahead during Comic Con, the recording said Happy Hour was available every day. When we actually got there the staff said Happy Hour was not available during Comic Con. Very annoying, but we stayed anyway. Gorgeous, elegant, and sophisticated old Americana interior design, romantic. Friendly staff, despite the Happy Hour lie. The $18 burger and friends was solid. Tasty burger with a juicy beef patty, bacon and cheese, and fresh veg. Fortunately that was still a decent price and a one quality burger. How did I miss this place? Friends have been telling me about this place for years. Saying it's one of the best Happy Hour places in downtown. Now after my first visit I would have to agree. I get there a little after 4:30 on a Friday and it's completely packed. Luckily somone just left the bar and there was the only empty seat in the place. I start off with the beer and which shot and ordered the pork-chop which looked like half the bar patrons ordered lol. My bartender was Jose and even though the bar was at capacity he was quick to help me out. The food came quicker than I expected. I couldn't believe how good the pork chop was. Better than most steakhouse chops I've had. Had an amazing texture and taste like it was right off the gri I love the fries as well skinner than average and a good crisp to them. No soggy fries, those are the worst. The place itself is nice and has a dark date night ambience to it. At the same time could pass for a local dive bar. Lots of regulars were in there. I came during happy hour and sat at the bar. No one bothers you too much. But, I was reading while I was enjoying the food and drinks. I was checked on a few times, but mostly when the drink started to get low. I absolutely loved the vibe of this place. Played great music. For some reason even with the music and the people, it didn't feel super loud. I still enjoyed reading my book, eavesdropping and people watching. I will definitely be back to try to whiskeys. I don't know if they offer tastings or flights. But, I'll def be back for the happy hour. We stumbled upon this little gem accidentally while looking for the Lazy Hippo for breakfast, it's right next door. To our surprise, they have the same menu the Lazy Hippo had when it was open, which was such a happy find. This ended up being one of the best breakfasts I've ever had. The food was hot, fresh, and absolutely delicious, and the service was outstanding. Nicole and Kelsey were our servers, and they were incredibly friendly and personable, making our brunch experience even better. It's hard to find a place where all four of us completely agree that it's exceptional, but this one absolutely did! I had the California breakfast burrito, my husband had the $20 breakfast special, which included bacon, sausage, eggs, potatoes, and French toast topped with fresh strawberries, our son had a regular breakfast burrito, and our daughter had the cinnamon roll pancake. Very cool spot in the Gaslamp to enjoy many whiskey options, as well as grab a bite to eat. So many options for flights, and the staff is super friendly (and patient) the whiskey/liquor book is 93 pages, lol. Espresso martini was so delicious, with Bailey's foam. Came with a large group of 20 and I ordered two orders of "The Japanese" whiskey, the flat iron and fried steak, and wings. Service was very friendly and efficient. The whiskey was good, will have to come back again and try their higher end whiskey tastings. I ordered my flat iron steak medium rare but it came well done. In town for a conference and this was in walking distance of where I am staying. It was chilly and pouring rain, so I appreciated a good grilled cheese and soup option. We came in pretty early for dinner, so they weren't busy and we were able to seat ourselves. The ambiance is nice, but dark. Each table has a dim lamp on their table and that is seemingly the only light source as you can barely see when you first walk in. My eyes did adjust after a few minutes, though. The grilled cheese could have been a tad cheesier, but the bread was nicely toasted and the herbed butter was delicious. The pobalano soup was smooth and spicy, I really enjoyed it. My boyfriend and I came here recently on a little 2 night anniversary trip and were staying down the street at the Hard Rock. We wanted to find a good brunch spot and since we're both gluten-free and vegan sometimes that can be a little tough. We found this place on yelp and didn't really know what to expect. They had a pretty decent selection of gf and vegan dishes so we got the chocolate chip pancakes and a vegan plate with some juices. The portions were HUGE, like two dishes in one huge. Honestly so generous for the price. Our waitress also brought us a whiskey bible to check out while we waited for our food. I first stumbled upon this spot in 2020--it was one of the few places open on Father's Day. I was pleasantly surprised. What initially seems like a dark, unassuming bar turns out to be one of the warmest and most welcoming places in downtown San Diego. The staff truly make the experience. Christina is an absolute gem--so knowledgeable and clearly passionate about whiskey. I'm always happy when I walk in and see she's working. The bartenders are fantastic as well. Louis, Jose, and Jesse are all great. And Jesse makes the best Aperol Spritz in town--and that's saying a lot considering I live in Little Italy! Somehow over the past decade I failed to ever notice this place even as a local who lived literally across the street at one point. I may have stopped in once but didn't give it a true chance. Since re-discovering it we've been back several times, it's that good. This is a no nonsense kinda place, the bartenders are laid back and they won't treat you like you're too special, but that's the point. It's super low lit lighting, which I personally love. It's got a cozy, relaxed and mysterious vibe to it. I noticed yelpers saying the staff is rude but if you want special treatment then go pay for it at Barley on 5th around the corner for 4x the price. Someone wrote they have New York attitudes and that's 100% true, I see nothing wrong here. Also yes, there aren't too many open tables/bar seats available if you go during busy hours but they do everything they can to accommodate. Go earlier and you won't have that problem!
