For my visit I enjoyed the Hangover burger. When I bit into my burger the freshness and complementary toppings had me doing my happy dance! Egg on a burger is genius ... genius! I felt the burger was full on the flavor and not grease. My burger was perfectly constructed and did not fall apart in my consumption. There is something for everyone. If beef is not your thing they do offer lamb, chicken, seafood, and vegetarian options and for an additional $1.00 you can have a gluten free bun. See- something for everyone. I was referred to this place by a friend who loves this place, and I'm very happy that I listened to her when she said that I should check this place out! I came in on a Friday around 4pm, so luckily it wasn't busy, and we were seated right away. I was also lucky to have come in at a time where they has their happy hour specials going on. I got the south lamb burger and my brother got the east coast burger, and we both shared a large order of fries. We loved everything we ordered. I didn't try my brother's east coast, but he said it was really good. I loved everything that was on my South lamb. The goat cheese went very nicely with the beef, and my patty was juicy. The beer on draft that I had also nicely complemented my burger. The fries were also fresh, and I like freshness! Went for a friends birthday. Have not been in close to 4 yeas, because I found bit eh past for the price you pay you don't get what you expect. The atmosphere is nice. The new location is great. That's where it ends. 5 of us went and everyone was disappointed. I got a cheeseburger. Pretty simple. It looked like it came out of a box from the freezer. They at least used to look hand formed. There was no flavor and I didn't even finish more than half. So I got to pay nearly $10 for something from the freezer section. Our waitress was less than stellar, messing up a few orders. I come here pretty regularly, tried something other than a burger for the first time the other night and was pleasantly surprised! I ordered the sautéed shrimp (traditional style). Shrimp were quite large and sauce was packed with flavor. Bread on the side was toasted nicely, just wish there was more of it! First, the new location is beautiful and spacious inside and out. We choose to sit outside on a gorgeous spring Saturday. We enjoyed the hustle and bustle of a busy Carytown. Our server appeared promptly and took drink orders--three beers and a soda. Twenty minutes later she returns to tell us the bar is backed-up and offers to take our food order. Fine. It's busy. (But not THAT busy--the patio was full but no one was sitting inside). We order: mussels for the table and four burgers. Shortly after, beers arrive (and soda--not sure why that took so long). And....we wait. And wait. And wait. Nearly 40 minutes after ordering we flat down a server, not ours, to inquire about our mussels. They magically appear minutes later, cold with the butter sauce beginning to congeal. We then ask for our burgers to come ASAP as we are on a schedule. (We arrived at 1:00 and didn't get any food until after 2:00). And, the burgers come in minutes. Mine was cooked perfectly, but was lukewarm at best. To their credit, the mussels were comped. I get it--restaurants get overwhelmed. But this was unreasonable, even for a busier-than-normal day. Burger Bach isn't cheap. My burger was $14 (with no side). Yep, tried Burger Bach again and had another abysmal experience. We arrived on Sunday around 5:30 or 6:00 with a friend. The place wasn't too busy and we were seated quickly. Our friend and I ordered a beer and my husband ordered a mixed drink. Five minutes go by and the waitress returns to say the keg was tapped out on my beer. No worries, I ordered a different one. Five more minutes go by and she comes back and tell our friend that his beer is also out, so he gets different one. Several minutes later my beer arrives by itself, it took another five minutes (we're at least 15+ minutes in at this point) for my husband and our friend's drinks to arrive. We then place our orders, burgers for the boys, shrimp for me, and a large order of fries to share. Based on our last experience and the fact that fries are listed as appetizer we assumed that they would come out before the meal. After waiting about 15 more minutes the burgers arrive and... a plate of mussels. I told the runner I'd ordered shrimp; the waitress returned and apologized, she said she'd hit the wrong button on the screen. My husband reminded her that we'd ordered fries as well and she said they'd be right out. Another 10 or 15 minutes pass, the guys finished their burgers and we're sitting around twiddling our thumbs waiting on the fries and my shrimp still. When it finally did arrive the shrimp were delicious. I ordered them traditional style and they were in a this butter/wine/garlic soup that was amazing. The fries were about how I remembered, dense and soggy. The roasted onion and basil pesto dips had no flavor. The waitress did comp the shrimp from our order, which was appreciated. Poor Customer Service. I will not be returning to this location. I have tried to give them the benefit of the doubt repeatedly. Too much to write, so I will be brief and focus on my main concern. I have ordered food from this location many times. I started selecting curbside pickup as offered when ordering food online, which includes entering your car description. They never bring the food out--even though a staff is standing right by the window looking out where my car is clearly visible. Curbside pickup should be removed from the ordering/pickup options if staff are not going to follow through. My main concern is that when I enter (after waiting sometime in my car to realize they have no intention to bring my order out), the staff don't even acknowledge me even though they look right at me. Solid 4 for burgers, 5 for fries and dipping sauces, and 4 for beer selection. I'm in love with their new building and can't wait for the weather to warm up to dine outside. It would have been great to see them winterize the outdoor area to maximize their dining space in the winter/rainy months as it quite large. They have a few stools near the bar for overflow while you are waiting for a table, still wish they could have made a larger bar as burger Bach is known to attract a crowd on weekends. You know all of that hype you have been hearing about this place? Well, don't listen to it, not true, don't even bother. I was visiting from Arizona this past weekend and read about this place. My sister says, yeah, people talk about it all of the time. I figured the prices would match the taste and quality; nope. I couldn't eat mine, tasted like grease and was tasteless. They make their own ketchup too (what? no Heinz?) The manager checked on the table beside us, not us. Our waitress told the whole staff that I didn't like my food and they all glared at me. It started off bad with her too, brought us 1 straw for 4 drinks, hardly any ice in my glass, had to ask for extra ketchup (yuck)The bathroom was a mess, dirty, at noon (how?) the soap dispenser falling off of the wall. The moved a couple blocks over from their original location. There's a parking lot, but it's in the back back of the restaurant with no entrance, so you have to walk around. When we saw that the burgers didn't come with fries, we ordered two large fries, so we were able to try pretty much all of their sauces. All of which were very unique. I ordered the Queenstown burger. I asked for a medium rare, but got it medium. The cheese wasn't melted on anyone's burgers. Service was great, the staff was very friendly. Have also tried a beef burger and it seems like anything from their menu is good. This location is moving soon, which is good. It's my least favorite of their Richmond area restaurants, so an updated location will likely be good. One thing I don't like is the outdoor seating area just looks out to Thompson Street - not exactly scenic. Another thing I don't love is fries are al a carte. I kind wish the burgers came with fries. "I guess you're stuck with me," was the first thing he said to us as we sat down. Maybe not the best way to greet guests. He did come back quickly with our water and Orange Fanta to take our food orders. My companion ordered a lamb burger along with mushrooms and a water. I ordered a "basic deluxe" with cheddar and bacon, along with the "Mount Everest of small fries," as the bartender called them. If you want to eat healthy, this place in Carytown has organic condiments and tasty vegetarian burgers (the very popular "Beyond" burger is what they use although this is not mentioned on the menu.) We also had a nice chat with the owner. She told us about the growth of their franchise. We were sitting in the first ever Burger Bach which opened in 2012. There are also locations in Charlottesville, Midlothian, Short Pump, and Durham, NC. Unlike most franchises, each location has a slightly different menu. For example, I recently went to the one in Midlothian, and they have more starters and burgers, but the food lacks the organic "feel" of the original location. Carytown is a smaller, cozier restaurant with murals and corrugated tin along the walls. It has a "beachy" feel. In fact, "bach" (pronounced "batch" which is good to know when you're inviting others to join you) is the New Zealand word for a modest beach home. The Midlothian location actually has a more formal decor; it's not "bachy" at all. I visited Burger Bach for a second time on Sunday, June 4, 2017. After speaking with the owner of the restaurant about my disappointment on my first visit, I was once again disappointed on my second visit. I thought that they would discontinue the process of using raw crude turbinado sugar for simple syrup. This makes an inferior quality of simple syrup which doesn't compliment a cocktail but worsens the taste of the cocktail. I had a Madras instead thinking it would taste good because there is no simple syrup used but it tasted nothing like a Madras that I have ever had. It tasted like a cranberry juice drink as the cranberry overpowered the orange juice. I had a regular cheeseburger and French fries and I asked for the burger medium rare and it was close to medium well. I spoke with the manager on duty, Arthur, who said that they have to cook it to 155 degrees. I wish the bartender that I placed the order with had told me that so I wouldn't have sent it back. The burger was rather small for being $10 and it seemed the over abundance of French fries was done to compensate for the lack of size of the burger. Extra condiments are $1 each and that is also a turn off. I understand having fresh juices but it would be nice to have actual orange juice as well. It would be nice to have actual simple syrup made with white granulated sugar. Some things just do not have an equivalent natural ingredient. I was disappointed that I had to almost beg a bartender to get my Madras cocktail served tall as I was told cocktails are served in rocks glasses which I despise. It would be nice if they could have used their pint glasses to make my cocktail as Madras cocktails are typically served tall. First off, I must admit that my one-star rating isn't entirely fair. I'm only giving it that to counter-balance the tide of idiots who are giving this place four or five stars . What the hell is wrong with y'all? Let's be honest -- making a good burger isn't rocket surgery. The difference between a good burger and a bad burger is mostly the quality of the ingredients. I've been to Burger Bahh twice, and enjoyed my food both times. The burger was good, the fries were good, the sauces were better than good. But if you think that makes Burger Bahh anything special, then I say that you just haven't explored the many great restaurants Richmond has to offer. There are TONS of places to get a good burger in Richmond. If you're in the central part of the city, you can close your eyes, spin around in circles, throw a rock in any random direction, and you'll very likely hit a restaurant at which you can get a good burger. But the real issue I take with Burger Bahh is how aggressively anti-service they are, while also being ridiculously overpriced. They use one hand to wag a finger in front of your face, while the other picks your pocket. For what it's worth, I'm a very experienced restaurant worker. I'm gonna give you some insider info here. Burger Bahh only gives you the choice of "pink" or "not pink". What?! You mean I can't choose anything between rare to well? I would expect as much from a fast-food joint, but not from a place that sells themselves as something above the rest. Line cooks don't mind requests for specific temps of meat. I know this because I've asked, numerous times. Some customers will feel like they're being rude to ask for something between medium-rare and medium, but to a line cook it's perfectly normal and not an any inconvenience to cook it med-med-rare. So why won't Burger Bahh cook their burgers to specific temps? I'm just making an educated guess, but I think they're parbaking their burgers. That means they cook it a little, and then let it sit out in the open for what could be hours, before finally warming it up. This helps with efficiency, but kills any juice in the burger. While eating my burger today, I overheard the bartender proudly tell another customer that they've changed their former policy and now allow substitutions on burgers. Wow! That's amazing! Would you like a medal, for finally doing what every other restaurant has done since the dawn of time? Oh, wait. You charge $1 for every substitution? So, if I want pickles instead of tomatoes, you're going to charge me $1, simply for the mild inconvenience?! You can go fuck yourself in the face. Speaking of being charged $1, that's what they make you pay for a fucking ramekin of sauce. The food-cost on that ramekin of sauce is pennies. Like, two or three pennies. And they're charging you a dollar for it. Speaking of food-cost, I'm really not fond of the fact that the fries are a la carte. Burgers are supposed to come with fries, not a small salad of mixed greens. This is a well-established tradition. The food-cost of those mixed greens is roughly the same as the food-cost of potatoes, which is to say that they don't cost the restaurant shit. I also overheard the bartender explain to the same customer that restaurant policy would not allow him to give a tasting of any beers on tap. He gave some bullshit excuse about how they use sixel kegs, or whatever, but I can tell you it's bullshit. I'm a bartender, and we absolutely don't mind giving small tastes, nor do our managers. Burger Bahh is simply being incredibly stingy. Anyway, by the time you order all of the stuff you'd normally get at any other restaurant, you'll be paying a good chunk of change more, for food that is no better quality than a plethora of other restaurants nearby. It didn't take long for me to return to Burger Bach in search of the veggie burger I was so sadly denied last visit. This time, I ordered take-out. It had been a long day and my to-do list was still a mile high... trust me, it was better to grub in the privacy of my own abode. I held my breath when calling, hoping that the veggie burger was not sold out. Breath held, anticipation mounting, and...score! They must have upped their order (or saw fewer vegetarians that day), because I secured myself a veggie burger. That, and a small order of fries. If I was rating purely on the burger, this review would be 5 stars all the way. I have eaten many a veggie patty in my day and let me tell you, this veggie burger crushes all the others. For starters, it was the thickest veggie burger I've ever eaten- it rivals that of a hearty meat patty. I'm always a little envious of the thick, juicy burgers enjoyed by my meat-loving friends when I'm sitting there eating my measly thin veggie version. So thank you, Burger Bach, for offering a veggie burger that I would not only bring home to mom, but to which I would also pledge my undying loyalty. I can't be sure of all the ingredients, but I do know it contained lentils, carrots, and absolute deliciousness. And the bun was perfectly created- not too much bread and it sufficiently matched the size of the burger. Pickles, onions, organic ketchup, and mustard accompanied the patty, sprucing up the package and finishing it off like a pretty little bow. The fries, on the other hand, left something to be desired. They were dense and soggy and, frankly, not too appetizing. Also, the garlic aioli sauce that was supposed to accompany them was nowhere to be found. The place was jam packed when I picked up my order, so I'm sure my sauce slipped through the cracks. I can absolutely forgive the sauce oversight- it happens, and cheers to them for being so busy- but the fries, not so much. Last time I thought the fries were killer, so I don't know what was up with them this go round. But back to the sole purpose of my update. As predicted, the veggie burger did not disappoint. How to rate a place that gave me one of the best burgers I've had in a while, yet had a few flaws I couldn't ignore? This was tough. My GF and I stopped in on a rainy afternoon and this place was packed. I begged and pleaded for burgers and she allowed me to further pursue a weekend of gluttony. Diet starts tomorrow. Unless it doesn't. Thankfully we didn't get seated in the communal table in the center. I'm not European, I'm not opposed to all-things European, but I do prefer a nice booth. I can even take cramped side by side tables a la Edo's Squid, but a communal table is not my thing. Our waiter was prompt and polite and pretty knowledgable about the menu. I ordered the West Coast burger and Beki S opted for the Wellington. We shared a large order of fries with garlic aioli, jalapeno remoulade, and tzatziki sauce. My biggest gripe of all comes with the sauces. They were very good (especially the jalapeno remoulade), but they CHARGE for ketchup. I understand this isn't Johnny Rocket's and that their ketchup is made in house, and they're a "gastropub." But you just don't charge for ketchup. Paying $1 for a medium-ish container of the red stuff is un-American. You get 2 free sauces with a large order of fries (1 with a small), anything else is an upcharge. That's fine, but ketchup should be free. Oh, the fries were fresh and VERRRY good. My west coast burger was AWESOME. Even better than the fries. Juicy, just the right combo of ingredients, completely fulfilling any cravings I had that day for anything bad. Great cheese, bacon, sauce. Get this burger! The GF's Wellington burger would have been good if not for being completely overpowered by bleu cheese. I wanted to take that bleu cheese and spread it all over the salad that came with my burger. The dressing left a lot to be desired. I also understand and am fine with restaurants that provide bottles/cans instead of fountain soda. But not a burger place. I want an IV of Coke hooked into my body when I'm eating a burger and fries. Paying $6 for 2 12 oz bottles of Cokes wasn't fun for me. With a few changes this place could be 4.5/5 stars for me. Great burger, great fries, great sauces. Stop charging for ketchup, get fountain Coke, and otherwise be European and keep up the great work. I'll be back, but I hope some things change. read more
