A good friend of mine recently moved to Escondido, and we have been checking out the local food scene. I was there on a week day and he mentioned we should try this place. Great choice!! Concerned about the parking, I found street parking rather easy. While waiting for him to show up I grabbed a printed menu from a wall bin by the entrance (first timers please do this before going up to the register). Wow, so unique in many ways, and every item on the menu I glanced at begged to be ordered. Oh, and I need to get down here early on the weekend even driving from Orange County, cause I looked at the " Breakfast Menu" too. Reading the signs on the wall let me know this place is about quality, community, sustainability, and exclusivity. Local farm to table, and the premium San Diego craft beer, and stubborn craft soda selection. Just impressive. Fresh Angus Beef (If you wish to upgrade to the grass-fed Wagyu, it is only $2) cooked to order. I like that you can get a half and half combo of the various sides. My onion rings were spot on, french fries were fresh & not greasy. I ordered the "special" Sourdough Tuna Melt, My buddy went for the Smokehouse Burger w/ tater tots & bench sauce. I had to settle for the ketchup dispenser. He approved of the whole thing down to the last bite. We were able to score a table inside, (cold and rainy day), and it was starting to get busy fast. I like that they have napkin dispensers at the tables, however, you will need to get a salt / pepper shakers and some sweeteners from a central station before sitting down. After paying, you are given a number on a stand, and hopefully there is a spot to seat your party. Big families may find this place frustrating when it is busy. I suggest having one person order, and the the others stake out a table. Also, since they have one P.O.S. terminal (if I remember correctly), do not be that %#&$ person that takes way too long to order. Paying with cash is also recommended, so you don't feel guilty if putting zero for the gratuity line when using credit or debit. It is nice that your order is displayed for review before paying (not verbal read backs at light speed that you can't understand), how refreshing. The quality of the food justifies the higher prices charged, and being ala carte, it adds up. My sandwich was perfect, the melted jack cheese and sliced tomatoes, balanced the mild tuna flavor. The sourdough bread, buttered and grilled on the flat top, Oh, I hope they keep this one. My only wish is that Burger Bench consider adding a dill pickle spear to the sandwich and burger plates. When I asked, the nice young lady at the register smiled and said sorry no. They do not show any items on their menu where any pickles are part of the toppings/condiments. A little tradition here would not hurt, and cost would be negligible. Maybe on request?? Also, we ordered black iced tea, and since the dispensers for this and the other, ginger peach, etc. are behind the bar, you have to take them up for refills, or flag down a busy server. In both instances they were accommodating and pleasant. But I'd rather not have to interrupt them. Since the plastic beverage glasses are on the smaller side, they could fix this by locating them next to the craft soda dispenser. Just a little suggestion. The restrooms were very clean on this visit. Both were unisex and accessible for handicap use. Old historic buildings often present some ADA challenges, kudos to the design team. Also liking the use of old school chairs in the dinning area. Getting any decent seating plan out of this narrow space was not easy. I look forward to having Burger Bench as part of our rotation of go to places. Their proximity to the Regal movie complex and the ongoing revitalization of the down town, should help keep them going strong. I look forward to sampling some of the excellent craft beer selection, representing some of San Diego's finest. I also need to try their Tomato Soup, as I'm on this quest for well, how did I miss this??? Next visit!! read more

This place is sooo good! Met up with the girls on a random Saturday afternoon, super cute environment to just relax- very friendly staff. We had tater tots, onion rings, chili cheese fries and sliders- I can't remember the names, but one had chicken with apples and a special sauce and the others were like bacon cheese sliders... and a vanilla shake. Don't judge us. And the table next to us had these amazing looking fried egg burgers! I hate we don't live in the area, because I would literally eat here everyday. A great spot located right in downtown Escondido. Went around 1:30 on a Friday and was able to find parking maybe 2 stores down. The inside very nice. I don't know if this is usual, but they were selling flowers at the register(so if ya trying to take ya lady ;). Also the inside was very clean with plenty of space to sit. Not to mention TVs inside playing sports and a bar you can order drinks at. I had the Smokehouse burger (shoutout to Christine at the register) and it was better than I expected. Lots of flavor and very filling burger. Also got a side of regular fries which were also very good! Total cost me $14. Quick service and great service as well. Wonderful whole in the wall! People were delightful, and the food... phenomenal!! I had the sunrise burger, with tater tots, while my boyfriend had the smokehouse burger with onion rings(to die for). A whole bunch of us descended on the Burger Bench for a Saturday lunch. The place was crowded, but the friendly staff kept the order line moving. After you pay for your lunch they give you a number and they deliver your meal to your table. Even with the crowd I think they did a good job keeping the food coming out in good time. I had the classic burger with a side of FFs. I, and everyone that I saw and heard, was favorably impressed with the portions and preparation of their entrees. Had to awkwardly wait around and stalk people's tables to get a table for 3 and feel bad when we took a little too long to eat because there are other people waiting. Atmosphere is nice and not too loud and pricing isn't horrible but the seating really sets the place back. read more

If Bob were a real person, THIS PLACE would be Bob's actual burgers. Except no whiny Tina. Service is amazing, despite usually being understaffed, they perform like champs. Special shout out to Sean for always being a chipper dude, super helpful, and lightning quick. Quick recommendation to the owner; hire more people like Sean. The burgers here are amazing. I've been here a couple times and they never disappoint. I recommend ordering a kids milkshake if you know you can't finish a regular milkshake. The one thing I wished they offered was regular soda, rather than the homemade ones they offer there. Besides that I love this place. read more
