In the area and was excited to find what appeared to be a Yelp gem in downtown Escondido. Unfortunately it was not a great food experience. My son was disappointed in the Rooster sandwich especially the flavor of the slaw. The sliders we ordered were tiny, like a bite each, and very dry. They really need to make an adjustment when cooking such small patties. We also had the classic burger which just lacked flavor overall. It was extremely basic. I wanted to try it because I wanted to know if they did the basics well but I can't say after the first visit that they do. On the positive side I like the selection of sauces for the appetizers like fries, onion rings and tots. You can get something more interesting than ketchup. At first, I thought it was weird that you have to wait at the hostess stand for someone to tell you to go to the counter to order but it actually makes perfect sense. It's a fairly busy place so they want to make sure you have a table to sit before ordering. This avoids people getting there and saving tables when they aren't close to ordering yet. My family and I ate here on our way home from the safari park. Granted we were hot and exhausted so we didn't finish our meal. I got the cheeseburger with mushrooms and bacon and tater tots. The burger was really good but I did add the siracha aioli sauce to it and that made it perfect. The tots were really good!! I highly recommend them. Everyone else had a Cobb salad (very good), chicken sandwich which was good and chicken nuggets. The only thing I didn't care for was the soda but that's just because I like my Diet Coke. Upgrade - Came back for a school fundraiser and had a much better food experience this time. The food. Vast improvement since their opening, though they still sell that terrible chicken sandwich (despite continued bad reviews about it). My Bench Burger was loaded with blue cheese, bacon, cheese, mushroom and lettuce.. I'd put it on par with Eureka burgers... Tots and fries were also good. Kids meals were enjoyed. I wouldn't call Burger Bench family-friendly. That's not the fault of the owner, it's just that this is a small place that serves up a lot of beer. The times that I've come here it's always been couples and groups of guys looking to blow off steam after work. Lots of cussing and inappropriate conversation. I searched a good burger and fries on Yelp and found this location: Pros: shake, shake, shakes, and shake goodness! We had the s'mores shake and I wanted s more... get it! Get it! They had a variety of food choices. Cons: its expensive! $58 for 3 people at a burger joint. Parking was street parking but I'm not from here so there may be more around. All in all, I would come back for another shake. It had a cooked s'more on top and was just soooo good. One had the patty melt. Another had an assortment of sliders. I had the arugula salad. This was the first time we all agreed we loved the food. Not like. Love! It was so exciting we immediately agreed to return two days later. This time I had the lettuce wrap California Turkey Burger. Heaven! Big too! BB we have a problem! I recently moved to Escondido and had heard I "have" to try Burger Bench. As a huge fan of burgers and milkshakes, I came here quickly. The staff worked quickly on a busy weeknight to get us seated, and the area itself was clean inside. We ordered a burger (smokehouse), a chicken sandwich, drink & shake, and frings. I was overall disappointed, and maybe came on an off night? It was quite busy for a weeknight I will say that. The buns weren't that good, and the burger itself didn't knock our socks off either. As an ice-cream junkie you'd think that the S'Mores shake was the real winner but we didn't finish it and I don't know if that's ever happened in my life. I'm seeing the reviews are saying get the grilled cheese, so I'll likely give this place another try given it's so close and could be the best of limited options around here. read more

This place has some of the best burgers in Escondido! And perfectly situated on grand, it's definitely a great date night spot and gives you a good downtown area to walk around after your meal! The milkshakes are really good, super rich and sweet so be warned! Service is walk up diner style, usually there's a small line but it's the seating that gets tight. read more

This place has the 2nd best (but probably the biggest; and Draft Republic doesn't count) beer selection in town, and the 1st friendliest and most charismatic staff in town. Everyone seems legitimately glad to be there and all of the interactions with customers are very genuine and authentic, not forced customer-service-y. These are the kind of people you want to sit down and have a meal or a beer with. This is one of the few places where we didn't experience a dip in quality or quantity of food even in the deepest of pandemic times; one of the few places where my burger is cooked exactly as requested, every single time; one of the few places where something listed as spicy is actually legitimately pretty hot; one of the few places where we've never had a single error in our order or been told a menu item isn't available that day. This is my favorite type of place. A hole in the wall done right in a renewed Main Street building, and Main Street Escondido has really stepped up the food scene. I got the lettuce wrapped bench burger and it was so good I went and ordered another! It was one of the best burgers I've had in a long time! We also got the onion rings which were phenomenal!
