I was happy to revisit this gem on Grand Ave. I walked in with a buddy, and we were quickly greeted at the front by the friendly cashier. The location has a pretty extensive menu written in chalk on the walk, and it's easy to read. There are choices of sandwiches, salads and a lot of great food in-between. After taking a minute to decide we went with the Southwest Chicken Salad ($16.99) as well as the Hawaiian Chicken Sandwich ($15.99) with a side of hushpuppies. The sauce on the salad was flavorful with just a bit of zest, and they gave us extra so that was really cool. It's a really comfy place to eat with a little bit of a Louisiana feel to it. I'm the tuna melt master. Let's compare H Brothers to Upper East. The tuna melt at H Bros is honestly about three stars. To me that means average. Neither anything spectacular but also not bad. Just a tuna melt. But the service and atmosphere made up for it so I give the place four stars. I like the people that work there and they have art made by locals for sale on the wall. This place has been around for over ten years. Upper East is the new kid on the gentrified block, so expect to pay more for worse service even if the food is better quality. Pick your poison. On a Wednesday, we stopped by H Brothers for lunch. Located in downtown Escondido, this bar and restaurant was recommended to me by one of my Yelp friends. We found free parking on the street a block or two down from the restaurant. Service (4/5): You order at the counter and then they bring your food to you. A couple of things stand out to me about their service. I was looking at the menu and was about to order. Someone behind me cut in line without asking if I was ready to order. The lady working noticed this and asked me to order first. Humanity still exists! They also check on your periodically even though this isn't true table service which is a nice touch. On the flip side, they did try and upsell me to add bacon bits to my dish which I was all for until I saw it was a $3.50 upcharge. I asked them to remove it. A little too steep. Ambiance (4/5): My type of restaurant. Casual with some charm. We sat at a table across from the bar. They have some cool decor, too. No complaints. Drinks (4/5): I had a beer flight because I often can't say no to a flight. I love the variety and being able to try new beers, especially when I'm traveling. While they don't have a huge selection, they had just enough beers that were interesting for me to take the plunge. Food (4/5): I did the country poutine which comes with fries, gravy, fried chicken bites, and green onions. I'm a sucker for loaded fries so I couldn't say no. The "Country Poutine", was not sausage gravy, it was just milk, flour, and oil with a whole bunch of garlic. there was zero sausage in the gravy. The Fresh cut fries where in fact not fresh cut fries, though they were good. The cheese curds that were in the dish were still cold chunks of cheese. Chicken was not bad though. My wife ordered the philly cheese steak with cheese sauce, it was bland and very tough lacking even basic seasoning. The "sandwich" was just a few slices of meat on top of some open face, toasted bread with cheese and veggies. The meal overall was very lazy and to top it off cost nearly $40 with a single soda. I got the roast beef melt and onion rings. Both were really really good. My wife liked the onion rings too. Her lunch, not so good. She order the Monte Cristo again from them for the 2nd time and I reminded her we didn't like it the 1st time, but she wanted more a breakfast thing than a lunch and tried it again. It disappointed again. It was so over cooked over crunchy like last time. As she was cutting off the edges because they were so hard, it just splintered. Not much meat, cheese nor flavor. Delicious comfort food plus nice casual ambiance. They have indoor and outdoor seating. We came for dinner on a Saturday and sat outside on their patio to eat since it was a beautiful evening with nice weather. They have a good variety of selection on their menu including desserts. We ordered the Brisket Sandwich with the cole slaw on the side and their Avocado Bacon Burger which comes on a Brioche bun and generous amount of French Fries, which was the one side that I chose. Both items were delicious and a fairly good size. I think next time we will share lol so we can have room for dessert. The service was friendly and quick. Great hidden gem surprised this place is not packed on a Saturday evening. I brought my family of 7 and we loved it. Food is great and the workers are friendly. I had the Buffalo chicken ranch wrap and it was sooooooo good. All my family members didn't expect much but every single thing hit so hard. Very honorable mention is the Mac n cheese soooooo so good. The reviews stood up! We went for dinner around 5pm. I had already looked at the menu, so I was set on the Cubano Torta. My wife had the Seafood Melt. My Cubano was incredible and huuuuuge. We also ordered a side of onion rings. My wife's melt was excellent too. She did need to add a bit of salt. We both had great leftovers the next night. It was that good. I arrived around 3:00 in the afternoon, just in time for Happy Hour. They feature a creative selection of loaded fries type fare at a roughly 30% discount off the regular menu price. I ordered the "Adobada Fries" and it was outstanding! Made with fresh cut fries that were hot and fairly crispy, a generous heaping of savory adobada, a cheese bechamel sauce, pickled jalaps, maters and a nice blob of cool sour cream on top. It came with two tasty dipping sauces on the side but that turned out to be unnecessary. There was nothing plain about these fries and the whole thing was nicely composed, hearty and delicious. It's an excellent quick-serve restaurant with an interesting and fairly diverse menu and a very good selection of beers on tap. They claim everything is made in-house daily. I got the Cheeseburger which comes on a big Brioche bun with remoulade sauce, two types of cheese, lettuce, and tomato. But no pickles, and most critically, no onions. Unlike most such places that make you buy a huge pile of fries for 40-50% of the cost of the burger, this burger includes your choice of several sides--I got the fries which were nothing special, but were hot and mostly crispy. The thickish burger was very good, but the meat itself was not very tasty or interesting, being cooked on a griddle but without the benefits of a smash style flavor and crispness. They should split the burger in half and griddle each half smash style. A minor complaint is the chopped rather than full pieces of lettuce, which makes the whole thing slip and slide around more while wrestling to eat it. Also, when chopped, lettuce loses much of that nice crunch you can get from whole pieces. And I really missed having onions--they should ask if you want them when ordering. Service is excellent and ambience fine. If Yelp allowed decimals, I'd give the place a 4.4. But I'll be back to try their many chicken sandwich and wrap options. read more

I had this restaurant bookmarked forever and I am glad I finally got in to try it out. I did not realize it is an order at the counter kind of place but, whatever, it works for me. You order at the counter and then grab a table. The soda machine is self-serve. The interior is super cute and there is patio seating, too. We tried the Monte Cristo, the Bacon Cheeseburger, and the country poutine. I also tried a beer flight. Everything was terrific. I am not usually a Monte Cristo fan but this one was very well made and delicious. Monte Cristos can be very greasy and heavy but this one was not greasy or heavy and it had a ton of flavor. It comes with both jam and syrup on the side. Also, this sandwich does NOT come with a side. The bacon cheeseburger was very well made and was great. It comes with a side and I tried the hush puppies. The hush puppies were the only disappointment of the evening. They were extremely dense and heavy. The flavor was good but I think lighter and airier hush puppies are simply better. The honey-flavored butter which comes with the hush puppies was insanely good. Finally, if there is poutine on a menu, I am ordering it. I know it's just Canadian junk food but whatever. SoCal has loaded nachos and Canada has poutine. H Brothers has a regular poutine (with gravy and cheese curds) and a "country" version which comes with gravy, curds, and fried chicken bites. Because we wanted to make absolutely sure we hit 20,000 calories, we went with the country version. They absolutely smother the fries with gravy and cheese curds. I don't know that the chicken bites are necessary but this is a great dish, if you don't mind gaining 5 pounds at one sitting. They only have a handful of beers on draft but they are good ones. My flight of three beers in 5 ounce taster glasses was very good. Even though they do not technically have designated servers, one of the workers stopped by our table every few minutes to make sure everything was going well. So our service was excellent. The menu is very well-written and makes you want to try more things. From reading past reviews, I know there are some hits and misses with the food, but our experience was very good. I have been here countless times and really have been needing to take the time to review. This spot is marvelous!! I've had a few things from this location and have never been disappointed. My brother had gotten the beignets, and they are soo soft and yummy to have as a snack!! May I begin on the beverages where it seems to be that they never have a bad option on tap. And if you come in and order some food to go you could grab a beverage as you wait. I recommend dining in the location to understand how relaxing the environment is.
