Overpriced and snack sized "stew" restaurant. Parking is available on the side streets. Not sure what the interior theme is supposed to be. It feels a bit like a Middle Eastern place with the rustic wooden trim and chairs. Most of the posters on the wall are of Pakistan. Except last time I checked, burgoo is an American/Irish style stew (from Kentucky of all places). Staff are friendly. Continuing the point above, there is actually not much burgoo available here. I was scratching my head at the menu. A couple of items might count as stew, but most of the menu are actually soups, salads, and sandwiches. Honestly I'm not sure what the theme is supposed to be. I ended up getting a mac & cheese. It was decent, but the portion size is small. My friend's chili was also small. Honestly it wasn't worth the price. I can't really recommend this place. Cute comfort food eatery. Very warm atmosphere, from the design of the inside to the friendly service. Because the place is relatively small, it's probably not a good idea to bring a large group, but it's a nice place for a smaller hang or even to chill by yourself. I have been curious for a while and just tried it with some friends. I probably will be back. They have a great drink menu with lots of specialty cocktails and nonalcoholic drinks. I got a nonalcoholic pineapple guava soda. I don't like drinks that are too sweet and this was good for me, but some people might find it weak compared to commercial fruit sodas. I got a soup and sandwich combo as my entree with the Eggplant Caprese sandwich and the Crab Bisque. I really liked this take on a caprese sandwich, and the baguette was very fresh and soft. The bisque was very good too. Rather than being a super creamy bisque, this was more tomato-based and a little tangy. Good flavour with a fair amount of crab meat. I also liked the little side of coleslaw that was included in the combo. Wasn't really planning on getting dessert but then I saw they had a Chocolate Banana Bread Pudding, and I will rarely pass up on bread pudding. It was delicious but, as you might expect from bread pudding made of banana bread, with ice cream, with caramel sauce, VERY rich and heavy, and I had to get some help to finish it. I think this would be ideal for splitting between two people. For this meal, with tip, I paid $48, which surprised me. I thought it was a good meal, but not $50 good - I'd associate that kind of price with a more upscale experience than this. I can understand the soup and sandwich pricing, the dessert was a little expensive, but what really strikes me as obviously overpriced would be the $8 soda. We chose Burgoo's yesterday for lunch with friends who drove from afar to join us. We four were all disappointed with the food, although the service was fine. Lobster Bisque was and just tasted like ordinary tomato soup - no pieces of lobster to be found! The salad that accompanied it was "Blah". The seafood platter and Butter Chicken were both disappointing, especially the latter that seemed to be warmed up frozen pieces of chicken, predictable canned sauce, yet nicely presented. The gooey cheese grillers (with tomato) was so decadent. Mozzarella, Gruyère, ementhal, cheddar.. looks like they used everything in the fridge! So good when you dip that in their tomato soup! I had their el Cubano which is braised pull pork, spicy capicollo with cheese and mustard. Really delicious on its own but when you dip it into the crab bisque. That's next level! After School Special 5/5 A bit shocked that the After School Special has raised its prices but it was about time (pandemic/inflation). I always enjoy ordering the after school special. My fav pairing is the Dos Diablos (cumin roasted peppers, red onion and chorizo sausage) and the Crab bisque (smooth crab, red pepper cream, and fennel-scented bisque). Macaroni and Cheese 4/5 This has changed since the OG days as they no longer serve the macaroni and more (think bacon/onions/breadcrumbs + really good macaroni and cheese). This is a good place to get some comfort food. The food presented well and was very tasty. The Mac and cheese was very flavorful and the cheese stayed stringy the whole time my daughter at it. It was more food than she was planing to eat. My wife order the kale salad and salmon bahn mi. She loved it and when I looked up, it was all gone. I had the full kale salad. This was not in the menu anymore. I had seen picture of the full spinach salad so when it came, I was a bit surprised it was not as big as I thought it would be. Otherwise, I enjoyed it. The service was slow as our server was rarely to be seen. She came to take our order but only after I signaled to her that we were ready. The food came out and was brought out by another server. Their Thanksgiving meal was quite disappointing. The turkey and harvest stew was way too salty. The green peas inside the soup looked old and the cubes of squash were still crunchy. The turkey was overcooked and it was cut into chunks instead of pieces which was difficult to chew. The fact that they added that much salt and also with the black pepper in the stew made us doubt the freshness of the ingredients. The mashed potato was very salty as well, and we could not taste the red wine in the cranberry sauce (it just tasted sour and bitter). The bacon and mushroom stuffing had mostly bread and mushroom but only a few bits of bacon. Surprising, they left a big chunk of bacon in the stuffing. The overall quality and the taste of the food meant that the chef was not meticulous and skillful. P.S. They did not need to have the cranberry sauce for the meal because there was no turkey steak (the sauce usually goes with turkey steak). read more

I didn't realize that southern food from the states was a thing in Vancouver, but apparently it is! My coworker and I came to Burgoo for a quick lunch between client meetings and had a great meal. I started with the coffee, which was adorably served and delicious. For lunch I had the salad and sandwich. My side salad was the spinach, which had bacon, feta, red onions, apple, and a thyme vinaigrette. Everything was fresh and the flavors went well together. I paired that with the Tastiest Chicken, which has bacon, Brie, onion jam, apple, and Dijon. All in all a good pairing with the salad! The baguette was so toasty and crispy that I couldn't help but eat it all! Service was friendly and quick (we were in and out in under an hour without telling them we were in a hurry, and without feeling hurried). Burgoo is the place to go to when you're craving some real comfort food. Pretty much everything on their menu spells out dishes that warm and fill your belly like mac & cheese and chicken pot pie. They don't just focus on one region of cuisine either... they have Mexican, Thai, French, British, American, etc... as long as it's comfort food, you'll find it here. While they have 5 locations around town, this visit was to their Point Grey location on W 10th Ave. We wound up ordering the Beef Bourguignon ($18) prepared with red wine braised beef, caramelized pearl onions, carrots, and mushrooms. With a type of stew like this, you need some type of carb to pair it with and we opted with their Homestyle Mashed Potatoes ($4). Next, we added the Kentucky Burgoo ($16.50) made with slow-cooked lamb, beef, smoked ham, lima beans, corn, molasses, tomato, okra and served with a warm white cheddar and parsley biscuit. For an additional $6, we got another 4 biscuits and it was well worth it. We added a Burgoo Lemonade ($3.25) and a Tall Mango Cooler ($3.95) to complete our meals. The beef was beautifully tender and the pearl onions gave it a slightly tart flavour. The buttery and creamy mashed potatoes was really a good pairing choice for our stews. The Kentucky stew was similar to the bourguignon and so filling. I've been to Burgoo many times over the years, and it never disappoints as a spot for heavy, warm, hearty comfort food. This isn't a place to come for a light and "healthy" meal, but it is a place to feel cozy with your friends and family and to enjoy bread and fondue, their famous Cheese Grillers and tomato soup, and some drinks to wash it down. We got there at around 8:30pm, the main dining area was still full, so we opted for a table near the bar, right by the window. I like this place because it has simple decor, and candlelight gives a comforting sense of home. Their menu is great, it has favourites from all around the world. Now this could be a risky thing, since how do you make everything from all different cuisines accurate? Starters include hummus and tepanade, salads, and fondue, with either Brie, or a mixture of Gruyere and Emmenthal, lots of different Big Cup soups-Corn & Chicken, Yummy Carrot...and the best part-Bistro Classics- Kentucky Burgoo, Mac & Cheese, Butter Chicken, Irish Stew...and lots more 'classic' dishes from around the world. They also have a "Spring Specials" menu, and I decide to get the Laksa. Yes, I know, trying this at Burgoo might not be the best bet, but I was willing to give them a chance. Also got a Desert Hills Gewurztraminer to accompany it. The dining partner got a mac & cheese. The Laksa arrived in a large bowl of piping hot curry based soup. The soup was flavourful, and very delicious. Thin rice noodles were in the soup, but there was VERY little of it. I'm used to basically having lots and lots of noodles.Other ingredients include prawns, portabello mushrooms, pea shoots, and BBQ pork. Everything was fresh, and tasted great with the soup.However, for $18, this is a little pricey for what I got. Service was minimal throughout the night; maybe it was because they were close to their closing hours? I've been here other times and their food has been consistently good. Great food, great staff, and great value for money, though they clearly could do with another waiter. I've been here twice for their after school combos, and they're great. I most recently had their grilled cheese with their tomato soup. The grilled cheese is great, it's creamy, crunchy, and chewy, while the soup was sweet and chunky, complementing the grilled cheese nicely! I also had their cheesecake, which was nice, because it was the lighter parfait variant as opposed to the expected "New York Cheesecake" consistency that I was expecting. I call Burgoo a post Gentrification chain restaurant that present themselves as providing a High Style, High Quality Experience but seem to be able to market there brand better then deliver consistently on the experience to the customer. Our visit started off being seated a small two person table in tight corner of the dinning area, even though the place was only about a 1/3 full. I noticed all couples were only seated in 2 tops with all 4 top left empty. Likely a house policy. After looking over the menu of deconstructed comfort food, all I really saw was lot of bacon added to increase the fat and salt contact to lunch items. I ordered a bowl of soup and it was tasty. While enjoying my soup I noticed I felt a bit cold. I looked and noticed Bistro had installed duct work for a modern heat\cooling system as part of remodel of the space. Sadly that does not help the customers if you don't set it to a reasonable temperature. To top off the table next to ours ordered the full meal comfort food brunch left most of food on the plate which at the prices they charge would make me conclude they did not enjoy it. read more

Let me tell you something about French Onion Soup.. I was a young boy when I was introduced to this tasty soup, which is an onion broth with bread clumps topped with tons of cheese and baked. I first had it at the Canyon Meadows Golf and Country Club in Calgary. I was instantly hooked! After that time, I've come back many a time to this tasty soup at various places... Some people make it good, and some people don't. Today I went to Burgoo's new location on West 4th Avenue (where Presto Cucina used to be... RIP, I liked that place! (and I got a Yelp review of the day honors on my review of them!!) and I toyed with either getting the grillers (which are very good) or the French Onion Soup (which I had never tried). The soup won out! It came, and it looked AMAZING! So okay, lets go through the check list.. 1) It has to be cheesy, and thick. YES! This indeed it was, The cheese was gooey, tasty, and sticks-to-the-spoon consistency. Perfect. 2) There has to be bread clumps: YES! Lots of yummy bread! Tasty! 3) The broth has to be good: The broth was VERY VERY good! Though maybe a little less in quantity then what I would have liked.. And most importantly.. 4) The cheese must have spilled over onto the outside of the bowl, making a crust. YES! I don;t know, the people at Burgoo mustve realized this is the MOST IMPORTANT DETAIL, because not only was it it running off the bowl, it was running onto the serving tray. It isn't that Jack and Burgoo go particularly well together, although they may after a few glaces of wine, but I really do think of Burgoo more often than I should. I first sampled what they had to offer in the form of a frozen bag of stew I found in my partents' freezer one winter night when I was too lazy to cook something up from scratch. It was Irish Stew and I was hooked. Funnily enough I didn't even realize that the Stongs-purchase was actually from a local restaurant "chain" until I was wandering down 10th one day with my mother and she suggested we go in. My mom had been here many times before so she knew what was happening, I did not. The food here is more homey than home and more soul-warming than hugging your favorite teddy bear. Though it is not bottom of the barrel cheap, it is certainly not over-priced for what you get! Now, having been back many many times I have tried most of what is on the menu and would unflinchingly recommend it all. Starters, mains, drinks, brunch items ... all of it is delectable and will drag you back for more before you can say "Burgoooooo". And that's another thing... what a great name! Its namesake is a type of stew (of course) that derives from irish stew and it always reminds me somewhat of pot-roast (note: if pot-roast is on the Burgoo menu when you go there... GET IT!) So head on over to Burgoo if you are looking to warm the cockles of your heart, share a hearty meal with friends and family, woo your lady-love (me, please, if you are going to Burgoo) or just chow down on something comforting after a hard day at the office. It was a warm morning but the heavy bistro menu did not stop us from having brunch there. My pain dore (French toast with blueberry syrup) was delicious.
